"GENIUS The Sandman creates his masterpiece"
    - No Depression

" A guy, a thoughtful guy, who won't press you into
adoration, even when he deserves it." - Pitchfork

    "Organic and right" - MOJO

    Heartbreak Pass, by seminal alt-country/
rock band Giant Sand marks their 30th anniversary. Individually,
each track on the record looms large on its own but, when
heard as one complete offering, you know that you are listening
to something very, very special. The Arizona desert has been a
predominate theme and source of inspiration for Howe Gelb, the
indie rock pioneer and frontman for Giant Sand. The group can
also be looked at as Howe's one-man-band with many guests and
collaborators. The album features Steve Shelly (Sonic Youth),
Grant-Lee Phillips and Ilse DeLange (Common Linnets).

    Middle Cyclone

Middle Cyclone debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top 200 in March, and was featured in everything from Rolling Stone, Spin, and Billboard to The NY Times. This is the 180 gram double LP. Neko's many fans hang on her impressionistic lyrics, classic pop harmonics, and luxurious voice, and this album revels in all three. It fuses her longtime themes of nature versus man into a shining lyrical broadsword. Numerous guests include M. Ward, Garth Hudson of The Band, Sarah Harmer, and members of The New Pornographers, Los Lobos, Calexico, The Sadies, Visqueen, The Lilys, and Giant Sand.

    Giant Sand Reissue Series Release

1995's Goods And Services was originally made for German ears only. Its vinyl re-issue will bring it to the attention of new fans as part of the Giant Sand reissue series. Once not remembered fondly by Giant Sand's Howe Gelb, time has been kind and his perception has softened with the memories of Vic Chesnutt's contribution.

Another live record. But this sound was bloated from Euro touring and was supposed to be a reaction of only how it was sounding then. Later, that made less sense to me since every tour the bands sound would change anyway. So I am not in love with this record and thusly never made it available for the States. But now, looking back on it, it brings a smile and also moistens the eye with the missingness of Pappy and Vic Chesnutt.

Giant Sand is a mood, explains Howe, as if trying to offer a low-key explanation for his dizzying array of artistic exploration that includes a back-catalog of some 40 albums as a singer, band leader and producer. After growing up in Pennsylvania in the 1970's, it wasn't until he moved to Tuscon, AZ that he met his musical soul mate, the guitarist Rainer Ptaceck. The two formed Giant Sandworms and issued only a handful of recordings before the Worms were put to rest; since then, Giant Sand has released 24 albums, an impressive haul when considering Howe's equally prolific output under other projects including Black Ranchette and Arizon Amp & Alternator as well as his solo releases.

    Blurry Blue Mountain

2010 marks the 25th anniversary of Valley Of Rain, the debut album by Giant Sand, the ever-shifting alternative rock band overseen by the Godfather of Alt-Country Howe Gelb. With that in mind, the band are celebrating in the only way they know how: with a flurry of great music, including the release of this new Giant Sand record Blurry Blue Mountain. This special edition is being released in a limited edition of 500 copies on blue vinyl and 500 copies on picture disc.

On this album, it happened that every session we were able to record came between work loads that rendered us at that point of sleeping and waking. Like the poppy fields in Wizard of Oz, we went in and out of consciousness at various times during recording. This is not a bad thing. Nor does it make the record sound like we're asleep. it has the momentum of that place between sleep and being awake. and in that narrow slip of existence lies a landscape of reason that most of us hurry past in daily lives. This record is planted firmly there between the crystal clear focus of your day to day and the luxury of sweet fuzzy sleep, we welcome you to the blurry blue mountain. - Howe Gelb

    Garden Ruin

Calexico is a band from Tucson, Arizona that shares a sun-bleached border with many performers and musical styles. Comprised of two core members, Joey Burns and John Convertino, Calexico became its own entity in 1996 with the release of the Spoke LP. Although that record marked the band's first official output, Joey and John had already been playing together as collaborating members of Arizona mainstays Giant Sand. A wide variety of tours, performances (including the Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals) and recording sessions as Calexico and with other artists (Neko Case, Victoria Williams, Richard Buckner), as well as their continuing relationship with Giant Sand, allowed the band the opportunity to develop as artists. Over time, Calexico has featured a revolving cast of musicians and instruments, and the band's sonic growth can be traced through its varied releases.

    The Coincidentalist

The Arizona desert has been a predominant theme
and source of inspiration for Howe Gelb, indie rock
pioneer and founder of the band Giant Sand. Since
1985, Gelb, based in Tucson, AZ has brought the spirit of the southwest and high art to his DIY recordings.

Gelb's newest recording, The Coincidentalist, is his first album for his new label, New West Records. Recorded with M. Ward and Steve Shelley (of Sonic Youth), Gelb brings together a set of songs that seem linked, like a novel but effortless stand on their own. The record also features guest contributions from Bonnie Prince Billy and KT Tunstall.

A Rainer Ptacek Tribute: The Inner Flame

    Import

Fire Records is proud to be reissuing the complete works of Rainer Ptacek, the phenomenal and much beloved slide guitarist from Tucson, Arizona, who originated Giant Sand's sound from the band's inception, as well as creating many remarkable recordings as a solo artist and with his own band, Das Combo, before succumbing to brain cancer on November 12, 1997.

The reissues start with The Inner Flame, a compilation of accomplished and remarkably diverse artists who were brought together to honor Rainer's inspirational work, featuring talents such as Robert Plant & Jimmy Page, Emmylou Harris, Evan Dando, PJ Harvey, Victoria Williams, Vic Chesnutt, Jonathan Richman, Madeleine Peyroux and of course Giant Sand.

Originally released in 1997, the album was conceived as both a tribute and benefit album, with the proceeds going towards Ptacek's medical bills. Reissued now as a celebration of his remarkable life and extraordinary talent, extra tracks have been added by the likes of Lucinda Williams, Grandaddy, Chuck Prophet, John Wesley Harding and Calexico's Joey Burns & John Convertino.

We offer up this new version to pay tribute and celebrate the man, the likes of whom I've yet to ever encounter again, and allowing a glimpse now of what he had done here on the planet and to share that embrace for ever having known him at all.

The best way here to sum up the man is perhaps by his own quote. Near the end, during his final interview, when asked the impossible question of what he thinks we are all doing here in this life, Rainer answered without hesitation: to love away the pain.

    Transistor Radio

    M. Ward describes Transistor Radio as a collection of songs "about childhood memories of a utopian radio power..." and dedicates the album to "the last of the remaining independent radio stations." Opening with a beautiful John Fahey-esque instrumental rendition of the Beach Boys' "You Still Believe in Me," Transistor Radio continues down a dusty well-worn road full of timeless, uniquely American stories. Ward's distinctly weathered voice and intricate guitar playing are helped along with an impressive group of guests incuding Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley), Howe Gelb (Giant Sand) and Jordan Hudson (The Thermals).

    Ulysses (Awaiting Repress)

Includes Two Unreleased Tracks Not Available Anywhere Else

Victoria, B.C.'s Current Swell is set to release their new album, Ulysses, on May 6, 2014. The 12-tracks
on Ulysses perfectly deliver the band's textured, deep-groove sound while capturing the energy of their live
show, which has earned them scores of fans across The Americas, Australia and Europe. The band will
debut many of these new songs next month in Austin during SXSW.

Ulysses was produced by Nathan Sabatino (Dr. Dog, Neko Case, Giant Sand) at Vancouver's iconic
Greenhouse Studios. The album captures every bit of warmth the studio's massive Neve console could
provide, as heard on "Rollin'" (a showcase for Stanton's exemplary slide work), the title track "Ulysses,"
rocker "Keys to the Kingdom" and the readymade sing-along "One Day I'll Be Rich."
While Current Swell spent the better part of six months recording their previous album (and Nettwerk
debut), 2012's Long Time Ago, the four band members entered the studio with a clear goal and knocked
    Ulysses out in 20 days.

From appearances at key festivals from Australia to Canada (Byron Bay Bluesfest, Peats Ridge, Rock
The Shores, Ottawa Bluesfest and more), to sold-out headline tours of Brazil, to support slots with such
established artists as Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros, Dispatch, Xavier Rudd, K'Naan, The
Tragically Hip and even The Beach Boys, Current Swell's infectious sound and raucous live shows have
earned the quartet scores of devoted fans around the word. In 2011, Current Swell earned first place at
Vancouver's Peak Performance Project and headlined a Canada Day concert to a crowd of 45,000.

Juliana Hatfield is an American musician and singer songwriter from New England formerly of the indie rock bands Blake Babies, The Juliana Hatfield Three, Some Girls and the Lemonheads. She has also performed and recorded as one half of Minor Alps with Matthew Caws of Nada Surf and has performed with or made contributions to the Lemonheads, Belly, Giant Sand, Susanna Hoffs, Aimee Mann and Mary Lou Lord over the span of her career. Growing up in the Boston area, Hatfield acquired a love of rock music in the 1970s having been introduced to the Los Angeles punk band, "X." Hatfield transferred to the Berklee College of Music from Boston University, hoping to join a band. She formed the Blake Babies with Freda Love and John Strohm in 1986. She sang, played guitar, bass guitar and piano in the group. Blake Babies were signed to indie label, Mammoth Records, in North Carolina and received airplay on college radio during the early 1990s. Hatfield and Strohm shared songwriting duties and often sang together. The band toured the U.S. and Europe and made music videos. Hatfield received a degree in songwriting from Berklee during this period. The Blake Babies disbanded in 1991 but reunited briefly in 1999, performing shows that year and embarking on a US tour in 2001. They released the critically-acclaimed, "God Bless The Blake Babies," to coincide with the tour. Frequent collaborator, Evan Dando of the Lemonheads made a guest appearance on the album.

Following the immediate break-up of the Blake Babies back in 1991, Hatfield joined the Lemonheads to record their album, "It's A Shame About Ray," playing bass and providing back-up vocals. She played and sang with the band on and off between the years 1992-1993. Juliana released her first solo album, "Hey Babe," in 1992. The album was one of the highest selling independent albums of the year. She recruited a rhythm section consisting of former Moving Targets and Bullet LaVolta drummer Todd Phillips, and Thudpucker bassist Dean Fisher, becoming the Juliana Hatfield Three. The JH3 achieved arena-rock stardom with the release of 1993's "Become What You Are." Several songs from the album got regularly played on major US rock stations, with her song, "My Sister," becoming the biggest hit of her career. The song placed #1 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and the video became a staple at MTV. The track "Spin the Bottle," was used in the soundtrack for the film "Reality Bites" in 1994 and Juliana made the cover of Spin magazine. In 1995 following the success of "Become What You Are," she released her follow up album, "Only Everything," in which she "turned up the volume and the distortion and had a lot of fun." The album, her first for Atlantic Records, spawned another alternative radio hit in "Universal Heartbeat." Before engaging on a tour for this record, Juliana released Phillips and hired Jason Sutter, Ed Slanker on guitar and Lisa Mednick on keyboards. Two weeks into the tour, she canceled remaining shows due to a bout with depression. She recently released two well received solo albums, "Pussycat" last year and "Juliana Hatfield Sings Olivia Newton-John" this year.

ROG will reissue her solo album "Only Everything," on vinyl since it debuted 23 years ago and make it available in the US for the first time with deluxe packaging.

    Axis: Bold As Love

Ranked 82/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Very few albums radically change the musical and cultural landscape, altering our perceptions by way of a mad combination of forward-looking performance, liberating lyrical narratives, spiritual overtones, and unimaginable sounds. Jimi Hendrix's sophomore Axis: Bold As Love is one of those records, a timeless and prophetic set that still seems as if it comes to us from the future. Unrelentingly ambitious, deeply mythical, and profoundly virtuosic, the stupendous 1967 collection dives into a pool of lustful psychedelia, earthy blues, cosmic soul, and unhinged rock. Along with jazz-schooled drummer Mitch Mitchell and melodic bassist Noel Redding, Hendrix establishes a new musical language, a foundation on which fellow guitar giants such as Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend, and Prince would build. Ranked by Rolling Stone as the 82nd greatest album ever released, and leagues ahead of its time, Axis: Bold As Love is an absolute must-have for every music lover. Particularly now that it's finally been afforded the sonic treatment it's always deserved.

Mastered from the original two-track mix-down analog master tapes, cut by legendary engineer George Marino on upgraded equipment at Sterling Sound, and pressed on 180-gram virgin vinyl at RTI, this LP is a sonic knockout on par with the very best audiophile recordings. With all apologies to previous editions from Classic and Universal, this pressing blows away any competition. It's no wonder that this release spearheads Legacy Recordings' unprecented 2010 Jimi Hendrix Catalog Project of reissues and new releases from the greatest guitar player in history.

Featuring seminal classics such as Spanish Castle Magic, Little Wing, and Castles Made Of Sand, Axis: Bold As Love stands as one of the Jimi Hendrix Experience's monumental moments, a tapestry scorched with color, sewn together with erotic threads, and varnished with rich personality. Do not miss this seminal pressing of a most seminal recording.
