    Pay Close Attention: XL Recordings

XL Recordings is a collaborative endeavour, and many people have contributed to its evolution.

In the song "Out Of Space", Liam Howlett of The Prodigy provided a blueprint when he sampled Kool Keith of Ultramagnetic MC's rapping these
    words: "Pay Close Attention".

And whilst XL has never had any outside ownership, Gil Scott-Heron advised me not to even consider XL "independent"; because everything is
    connected.

This compilation is an attempt to illustrate some of these connections.

Part 1 is the roots of XL; underground music, made for DJ's. These roots
    are still growing.

Part 2 features some of the singular talents who have taken the label further
than we ever envisioned. There is no unifying genre, and I'll happily confess to aesthetic opportunism; hopefully the thread of originality is evident
    though.

We've never compromised. The rave music XL first became known for was
known as "hardcore"; that spirit continues.

To show our appreciation for your support: thank you DJ's.

And thank you also to the retailers, writers and of course, ravers.

    I'm New Here

Gil Scott-Heron is one of the most influential and important singer/songwriters to have come out of America in the second half of the last century. Much can be said about why Gil's lyrics are so original and powerful, but it is important not to overlook his utterly singular voice which is so distinctive and rough and tender. It's a voice of experience and the way his voice floats over the shifting funk rhythms and the deep jazz, soul and blues melodies is nothing short of sublime. It's also what enables him to draw you in to the difficult issues he does not shy away from dealing with. His sound is intimate and warm and direct and consequently it is hard to resist being moved and inspired by his message. Gil has been consistently relevant whether it be on a personal or political canvas.

Early on in his career he wrote and recorded the song that for many is regarded as one of the first great rap tracks,The Revolution Will Not Be Televised. From its opening lines which turn Timothy Leary on his addled head (You will not be able to stay home brother. You will not be able to plug in, turn on and cop out. You will not be able to lose yourself on scag brother, because the revolution will not be televised.), Gil threw down the gauntlet, challenging us to get involved, be informed, retain a sense of humour and do the right thing. He was angry, politically savvy, compassionate and very funny. When he was brought to Arista by Clive Davis in 1975, he was billed by the label as the black Bob Dylan, and whilst this reductive and over simplistic description is typical marketing bullshit, there is some raison d'etre for this moniker. For Gil is a protest poet of enormous subtlety who has railed against those things in the world that he believes are wrong. And like Dylan he has often used humour as a powerful weapon.

A new record from Gil Scott-Heron, 40 years after his first solo album, is a cause for major celebration and something that the world needs now more than ever.

2 Steps From The Middle Ages

    Pressed On Translucent Orange Vinyl

Packaging Includes Rare And Previously Unseen Photos From The Band's Photographer, Robert Toren

The Reissue Also Features Essays From Easter, Ken Stringfellow (The Posies, Big Star), And Franklin Bruno (The Village Voice, Salon.com)

Their final studio album - remastered and expanded! Following up 1987's Lolita Nation (whose reissue appeared on numerous year-end "best of" lists for 2016) would be no easy task for Game Theory. But, Scott Miller and company were certainly up for the task.

Re-teaming with producer Mitch Easter (R.E.M., Marshall Crenshaw, Velvet Crush), 2 Steps From The Middle Ages was released in 1988 and showed the band had no shortage of energy, experimentation, and excellent material.

The first pressing of this LP reissue, on vinyl for the first time since its initial release, comes on translucent orange colored vinyl. Packaging includes rare and previously unseen photos from the band's photographer, Robert Toren, as well as essays from Easter, Ken Stringfellow (The Posies, Big Star), and Franklin Bruno (The Village Voice, Salon.com).

The band's drummer, Gil Ray, who was involved in all aspects of the Game Theory reissue series including this title, sadly passed away earlier this year. This reissue is lovingly dedicated to him.

Jamie xx will release his debut album In Colour on Young
Turks. The eleven track LP includes previous releases "Girl" and "Sleep
Sound" as well as forthcoming single "Loud Places," which features vocals
    from Romy Madley Croft.

The release of In Colour comes on the back of an incredible six year
creative period for Jamie xx, which has seen him alternate effortlessly between
his role as founding member and producer of The xx, and creator
of more electronic and club orientated music as Jamie xx. A string
of acclaimed productions in recent years including debut solo single "Far
Nearer," remixes for the likes of Adele, Radiohead and Florence & The
Machine, production work for Drake and Alicia Keys plus We're New
Here - Jamie's seminal reworking of Gil Scott-Heron's final studio album -
hinted at what was to come.

With In Colour - a bold, celebratory, emotional record that features collaborations
with The xx band mates Romy Madley Croft ("Seesaw" and

    Poltergeist (Colored Vinyl)

Limited Edition Of 750 Numbered Copies On Red & Black Mixed Vinyl

Poltergeist is a 2015 American supernatural horror film directed by Gil Kenan, written by David Lindsay-Abaire and produced by Sam Raimi. A remake of the 1982 film of the same name, the film stars Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Jared Harris, and Jane Adams.

In the film all seems well for Eric Bowen (Sam Rockwell), wife Amy (Rosemarie DeWitt) and their three children as they move into their new house in the suburbs of Illinois. Soon, youngest daughter Maddy (Kennedi Clements) begins talking to an imaginary friend, or so the family thinks. It's not long before sinister spirits wreak havoc in the home, holding Maddy captive and forcing the parents to consult a team of parapsychologists who engage the supernatural entities in a battle for the girl's freedom.

The German film music composer Marc Streitenfeld is known for his collaborations with director Ridley Scott. Born in Munich, Germany, Streitenfeld relocated to Los Angeles at the age of 19, first working briefly as a musical assistant for composer Hans Zimmer, then independently as a music editor and supervisor on several blockbusters.

    Ibeyi

Ibeyi (pronounced ee-bey-ee) means "twins" in the language of the Yoruban culture
of Lisa-Kainde and Naomi Diaz. The album of the same name, produced by
XL Recordings boss Richard Russell, is the story of two sisters: their relationship,
their origins, their shared history and their musical chemistry.

The twins' roots are reflected in the polyglot nature of the lyrics - in English,
French and Yoruban - and music which combines ritual chants with synths and
samplers, jazz vocals with the spellbinding mystery of Björk and Fever Ray, the
traditional with the modern. This uniquely cosmopolitan sound is the perfect
vehicle for their intimately personal stories. According to them, "This album is
about love and family and people who are gone."

Lisa-Kainde and Naomi (the eldest by two minutes) were born in Paris, where
they still live, but spent their first two years in Cuba. Their father was Miguel
"Anga" Diaz, the member of the Buena Vista Social Club, who was acclaimed as
    the greatest conga player.

Record producer and XL Recordings boss Richard Russell first encountered
Ibeyi when he saw them performing "Mama Says" on a 2013 YouTube video. He
soon invited them to meet him - a serious offer from someone who in recent
years has produced albums by Gil Scott-Heron I'm New Here and Bobby Womack
The Bravest Man In The Universe (co-produced with Damon Albarn), as well
Albarn's own acclaimed 2014 solo album Everyday Robots.

The album is a subtle melange of diverse influences: not just Lisa-Kainde's soul
and jazz leanings and Naomi's up-to-the-minute beatmaking but the bloodlines
of France, Cuba and Africa, including the use of Yoruban chants they first heard in
the Santeria ceremonies. The tense, dramatic "Oya," the lead track on their debut
EP, addresses the deity (or "Orisha") of change and destruction while "River"
honours Oshun, the Orisha of love, rivers and fertility. Yoruban culture travelled
from Nigeria and Benin to Cuba and Brazil with the slave ships centuries ago but
    is little-known in Europe.

From A Whisper To A Scream (Pure Pleasure)

One of Esther Phillips finest '70s releases, From A Whisper To A Scream is the first of seven albums the singer recorded for CTI offshoot Kudu. Arranged and conducted by Pee Wee Ellis, the December 1971 session also involved principal players such as bassist Gordon Edwards, drummer Bernard Purdie, percussionist Airto, guitarists Cornell Dupree and Eric Gale, keyboardist Richard Tee, and saxophonists Hank Crawford and David Liebman. Setting the tone for Phillips' Kudu era, Whisper offers a series of spacious, yet fully arranged ballads of burning heartache, along with a handful of relatively funky numbers that do nothing to compromise her talent, dishing out loads of classy grit. It's a definite point of departure from the likes of Esther Phillips Sings and And I Love Him!, her field of contemporaries closer to Al Green and Aretha Franklin than before. She grabs onto Home Is Where The Hatred Is, Gil Scott-Heron's most harrowing rumination on drug dependency -- which, at that point, wasn't even a year old -- as if it were her very own, and it's all the more poignant given its parallels with her own life. (It's meaning was only compounded by her death in 1984.) Though there is absolutely nothing lacking in the album's more energetic moments, it's still the ballads that shine brightest, like the alternately fragile and explosive From A Whisper To A Scream (Allen Toussaint) and a staggering Baby, I'm for Real (Marvin and Anna Gordy, made popular by the Originals) so vulnerable yet commanding that it really should've closed the album.

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

'An extraordinary distillation of fury and frustration. Instantly hailed as a classic, it has since been a direct influence on everything from gil scott-heron's small talk at 125th and lenox to public enemy's fear of a black planet.' -- uncut

'Proto-rap prophets 'proto-rap prophets of rage... Their righteous indignation still burns' -- record collector

Generally recognized as one of the first ever rap groups, The Last Poets' groundbreaking fusion of minimalist African beats with uncompromising lyrics dealing with life in the ghetto, civil rights and social injustice caused a major sensation when their eponymous debut album made the U.S. Top Ten album chart in 1970.

The group's militant message and delivery, coupled with their support for The Black Panthers, made them highly controversial at the time leading to the group's second album, 1971's This Is Madness, being placed on Richard Nixon's Counter-Intelligence programming list. Their pioneering sound continues to influence today's funk and hip-hop scenes, with their mark being heard on countless black musicians over the years.
