Stan Getz Featuring Joao Gilberto: The Best Of Two Worlds (Pure Pleasure)

This 1976 album by the late saxophonist Stan Getz is a reunion of sorts with Joao Gilberto, the great Brazilian guitarist and singer, and the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim (or Tom Jobim), along with the stylish and nonintrusive arrangements of Oscar Carlos Neves. The most beautiful thing about this recording is that Jobim - whose song forms had reached such a degree of sophistication that he was untouchable - chose to write all of his lyrics in English (songwriter Gene Lees also wrote many in English). This is something that did not come naturally or effortlessly to Jobim, but sounds as if it did. Jobim's poetry on tracks such as Waters of March, accompanied by Getz's lushly romantic saxophones and Gilberto's crooning nylon-string guitar, are so sensuous they radiate heat and humidity.

    Musicians:

    • Stan Getz (tenor saxophone)

    • Joao Gilberto (vocal, guitar)

    • Oscar Castro Neves (arranger, guitar)

    • Heloisa (Miucha) Buarque de Hollanda (vocal)

    • Albert Dailey (piano)

    • Steve Swallow (bass)

    • Grady Tate (drums)

    • Airto Moreira, Ruben Bassini (percussion)

Recording: 1976 at Columbia Recording Studios, New York City, by Stan Tonkel

    Production: Stan Getzdeutsch

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Comic Book Inspired Cover From L'amour Supreme (Mishka NYC)

Includes A Comic Book Written By Esoteric With Artwork By Gilberto Aguirre Mata (El Ultimo Codice) & L'amour Supreme

CZARFACE - Wu-Tang founding MC Inspectah Deck and veteran Boston duo 7L & Esoteric - isn't concerned
with the glitz and the B.S. that modern consumer culture is pushing. And neither are the group's fans.

In 2013, the trio appeared relatively unassumingly with their self-titled debut, which was chiefly produced by DJ 7L and included guests ranging from Ghostface Killah and Cappadonna to Vinnie Paz, Action Bronson and Roc Marciano. The soon-to-be acclaimed group found out quickly that there was a groundswell of hip-hop fanatics thirsting for the lunchpail, lyrics-above-all-else rap they fell in love with in the '90s. Several pressings of the album on CD, 2-LP and even cassette later, they are back and ready to up the ante.

This time around the group is the same, but it's fair to say that all three men have stepped up their game. "We knew how we felt about the last album, but weren't sure how it would be received by listeners," explains MC Esoteric. "But people really responded to it, even more than we had hoped. That gave us the confidence to really spread our wings and let loose on this one. The chemistry is even tighter this time around. We know exactly what lanes we are cruising in and what weight class we are fighting in for Round 2."

Inspectah Deck adds, "Czarface is like the Danger Room for the X-Men, I can use all my weapons on there. When I'm in Wu-Tang, I have to come a certain way because we have a certain style of fan, when I'm here doing the Czarface projects, it allows me to actually be an MC, it allows me to actually just spit...I love that. I love when i can just spit freely and just be an MC."

The fighting analogy - whether drawn from pugilism or '80s wrestling, both which figure into Every Hero Needs A Villain - is an apt one, considering the unrelenting lyrical attacks that Deck and Esoteric unleash on track after track, each trying to one-up the previous verse.

Best of all, it is friendly camaraderie, based around a loose theme of renegade mutant MC talents running wild. DJ 7L explains, "All three of us are influenced by comics, sci-fi movies, TV, wrestling. Czarface encompasses all of that, and it helps with the visuals as well."

On the production side, 7L shows yet again - as he did with the group's debut - that he remains a formidable yet underappreciated musical force, constantly providing hard, funky and alternatingly ominous backdrops for the assembled MCs to use as lyrical luge paths.

If that wasn't enough, the double LP comes packaged with "Death & Abduction," a comic written by Esoteric, and has an explosive, comic-book-inspired cover by L'amour Supreme (Mishka NYC).

Ranked 447/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Getz/Gilberto is a 1964 jazz-bossa nova album by American saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazilian guitarist João Gilberto, featuring composer and pianist Antônio Carlos Jobim. Its release helped fuel the bossa nova craze in the United States and internationally, becoming the first Grammy Award-winning album from non-American artists. It brought together Stan Getz, who had already performed the genre on his LP Jazz Samba, João Gilberto (one of the creators of the style), and Jobim, a celebrated Brazilian composer (and also one of the main creators of the genre), who wrote most of the songs in the album. It became one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time, and turned Astrud Gilberto, who sang on the tracks The Girl from Ipanema and Corcovado, into an internationally celebrated musician. The painting on the cover is by Olga Albizu.

    Coisa Boa

    First Album In 11 Years!

Moreno Veloso is back with a good thing. That, anyway, is the literal translation of the title to the Brazilian singer, songwriter, and producer's upcoming Coisa Boa, his first album in 13 years.

The set follows Veloso's production work on the last three albums from his father, Tropicália giant Caetano Veloso (including 2013's Abraçaço), along with a forthcoming record by Gilberto Gil. Since 2001's Music Typewriter, the younger Veloso has also released the rest of the +2 album trilogy with friends Domenico Lancellotti and Alexandre Kassin (those are Domenico+2's 2003 Sincerely Hot and Kassin+2's 2007 Futurismo).

The new album's Em Todo Lugar, which is Portuguese for everywhere, is limpid, airy, and coolly sophisticated, and you can hear it below. Three songs from the new album feature in Richard Linklater's new film Boyhood, which debuted at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Scroll down to hear Coisa Boa and Verso Simples, too.

We're just trying to make something we like and that's a new way of doing things for us, Veloso explained in a statement. Before, we wanted to make it sound very new, but now we're not trying to do that, just trying to do music.

Lancellotti and Kassin help out on the album, which was recorded with about 30 musicians in nine studios around the world. Other guests include guitarists Arto Lindsay and Pedro Sá, bassist Melvin Gibbs, pianist Daniel Jobim, keyboardist Rodrigo Bartolo, and multi-instrumentalist Takako Minekawa.

    Getz Au Go Go

Although the name Stan Getz (tenor sax) was initially synonymous with the West Coast cool scene during the mid-to-late 1950s, he likewise became a key component in the Bossa Nova craze of the early 1960s. Getz Au Go Go (1965) is Stan Getz in his prime, recorded with perhaps one of the best quartets of his career, featuring Bossa Nova singer Astrud Gilberto.

The album was recorded in 1964 during two concerts in the venerable Greenwich Village venue, the CafÉ Au Go Go, two months after Astrud Gilberto's Girl From Ipanema became a Top Five pop single. However, the focus of Getz Au Go Go steers away from the Brazilian flavored fare, bringing Gilberto into the realm of a decidedly more North American style.

That said, there are a few Antonio Carlos Jobim compositions -- Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars) and One Note Samba -- both of which would be considered as jazz standards in years to follow. The album boasts wonderful versions of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein's It Might as Well Be Spring, and the scintillating instrumental Summertime, from Porgy & Bess.

The band features a young Gary Burton (vibraphone), Kenny Burrell (guitar), Gene Cherico (bass), and Joe Hunt (drums). There are a few personnel substitutions, with Helcio Milito (drums) and Chuck Israels (bass), respectively, filling in. Getz Au Go Go is highly recommended for all dimensions of jazz enthusiasts.

Jacintha picks up the tempo in her first bossa nova session. Featuring a program of some of the most well known classics of the genre including several Jobim favorites like So Nice, Desafinado, Dindi, Corcovado, as well as less familiar tunes like O Ganso and So Danco Samba, The Girl From Bossa Nova is a striking change of pace for Jacintha that will enthrall all of her fans. With superb solos from tenor Harry Allen and acoustic guitar from John Pisano (ex-Diane Krall), the album is given the supreme finishing touch by the magical playing of Brazilian master percussionist P. D Costa who's recorded and performed with all the legends - Jobim, J Gilberto, Gilberto Gil, Astrid etc. His contribution truly gives the entire album it's authentic bossa nova vibe. And yes, there are a couple of classic Jacintha ballads done bossa style -- This Masquerade and Dindi. A must buy for Jacintha fans and all bossa nova lovers.

Mendes went back to the taproots of his heritage, calling upon a plethora of explosive tracks from L.A. sessionmen and give the production a finished sheen. Combining Forro and Samba Reggae with Indiado stomps and shouts, What Is This is a romping Bahian take on Hiphop and grafts Portuguese vocals onto a swinging American Funk groove. And the unusual ¾-meter samba Pipoca is the creation of do-everything mystery man Hermeto Pascoal.

Mendes draws upon the giants and comers of Brazilian songwriting like Ivan Lins, Gilberto Gil, Joao Bosco, Carlinhos Brown, and Guinga. Mendes vocal blend is Gracinha Leporace who sounds more vibrant than ever. Bassist Sebastian Neto also returns to the Mendes fold.

Nancy Meyers' 2003 comedy continued her successful collaboration with Diane Keaton (e.g. Baby Boom) and was the rare Hollywood film to focus the romantic spotlight on a couple in the autumn of their years, the fifty-something Keaton and the sixty-something Jack Nicholson.

Fittingly for a film whose male lead played a wealthy music mogul who only dated women under 30, the accompanying soundtrack was a dazzlingly eclectic and seductive mixtape from an all-star array of international artists, from Astrud Gilberto to Eartha Kitt to Charles TrÉnet The Flamingos and culminated in a rendition of "La Vie En Rose" by none other than Jack Nicholson himself!

Something's Gotta Give never did come out on LP, and for its maiden vinyl release we at Real Gone Music wanted to conjure images of that to-die-for Hamptons beach house inhabited by Keaton's character-so sea foam green vinyl it is, limited to 1000 copies!

    Big Band Bossa Nova

A byproduct of the bossa nova fad that followed the success of Desafinado (and preceded the famous recording Getz/Gilberto), this set finds Quincy Jones utilizing and exploiting bossa nova rhythms in his arrangements for a big band. The personnel includes flÜgelhornist Clark Terry, altoist Phil Woods, pianist Lalo Schifrin, guitarist Jim Hall, and (on Soul Bossa Nova) the remarkable Rahsaan Roland Kirk. However, since the selections are all quite brief, and some of the charts are a bit cheesy and inappropriate for the gentle rhythms, this disc (although pleasant enough) is of lesser interest.

This highly anticipated follow up to Sounds From the Thievery Hi-fi left both critics and audiophiles delighted with Thievery Corporation's expert treatment
of bossa nova, dub, and downtempo. Featuring lush vocals by Bebel Gilberto, Pam Bricker, Lou Lou, and See-I, The Mirror Conspiracy is a fantastic
    statement from ESL Music.

" their remix work since then has since established them as leaders of the pack. And true to its name, the Corporation surreptitiously lays down
overdubs of keyboards, congas, and percussive instruments to piece together a darkly beautiful piece of music in The Mirror Conspiracy." - Wall of Sound

"The only thing snappier than Rob Garza and Eric Hilton's Armani suits and Bruno Magli shoes is the suave, downbeat dance tracks the Washington D.C.
duo creates as Thievery Corporation. The pair's top-shelf aural cocktails, which involve a smooth mixture of dub reggae, trip-hop, acid jazz and Middle
Eastern musics, have been fueling the fires of backroom lounges and dimly lit bedrooms since the pair's first singles emerged in 1996. The Mirror
Conspiracy, TC's long-awaited sophomore album, raises the temperature of the mix by melding the synthetic serenity of lush keyboards with the warm
hues of live strings, brass, percussion and the pipes of a host of vocalists " - CMJ

Margo Guryan's honeyed voice and gorgeously sweet songwriting has become a favorite of the soft-pop set. As a successful songwriter, her compositions have been recorded by the likes of Jackie DeShannon, Spanky & Our Gang, Astrud Gilberto, Claudine Longet, Oliver, Cass Elliot, Glen Campbell, Saint Etienne and Harry Belafonte. Her only solo album, the magnificent Take A Picture (featuring the hit "Sunday Morning), has become a cult classic since its release in 1968, and no wonder: its combination of marvelously funky sunshine arrangements and Margo's delicious melodies are a heady combo. She's influenced everyone from the Wondermints to Belle and Sebastian to Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (who listened to Take A Picture while writing Juno).

In 2001, Margo released 25 Demos, a collection of fully-fleshed out demos from her personal collection. Most people's demos are mere sketches -- Margo's are little baroque masterpieces, featuring string arrangements, circus organ, chamber-pop rhythm sections and tons of glorious echo. Now, Modern Harmonic presents the biggest collection yet, 29 Demos, all lovingly wrapped in a gorgeous gatefold jacket loaded with liner notes. Finally, an album worthy to follow Take A Picture - two LP's worth of magnificent soft-pop.

It would probably not be an overstatement to call this the most influential Brazilian album of all time. Originally released in 1959, Chega de Saudade is the album cited as creating bossa nova so to say that it lit a fire in the music world would be putting it mildly. It would be perhaps more accurate to say that it influenced so many musicians both at home (Caetano Veloso, Jorge Ben, etc.) and abroad (Stan Getz, Herbie Mann, Charlie Byrd) that it effectively single-handedly changed the way people both made and listened to music, and put Brazilian artists on the map. Almost every song on this album has gone on to become a standard, and Gilberto, called O Mito, is today, at age 79, truly a living legend. Here Gilberto collaborates with both Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes, both legends in their own right. Moraes and Jobim would soon go on to write the song that won them a Grammy in 1965, The Girl From Ipanema.

    Jazz Samba (Out Of Stock)

Mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound

The words bossa nova are often synonymous with the name Stan Getz. But North Americans might not have ever known the bright sound of bossa nova had it not been for Charlie Byrd. In 1961 Byrd returned from a tour of South America, where bossa nova music was thriving. The style was the invention of singer Joao Gilberto and songwriter Antonio Carlos Jobim - an adaptation of infectious Brazilian samba rhythms with the harmonic structures and cool surface of West Coast jazz. Byrd brought back records for Getz to hear, they planned a session, and the result was Jazz Samba - the first album of true bossa nova music by jazz artists and the one that broke the bossa nova wave in 1960s America.

...these are all truly classic Verve titles that you simply don't want to miss...most importantly, the sound of these reissues is nothing short of astounding. Particularly the early Billie and Ella mono records are incredible treasures of sonic beauty. I'd definitely ask Santa for the whole set, or, if you want to cherry pick, the most classic titles. Whatever you decide, you owe yourself at least a half dozen! Winner of a 2012 Positive Feedback Online Writers' Choice Award - Danny Kaey, Positive Feedback Online, November/December 2011

The original master tapes for this title had not been used since 1980 previous to this reissue. Also, for this Analogue Productions reissue the decision was made to master and present this album as it was originally mixed to master tape. With very few exceptions all versions of this title to date, including the original, have had the channels incorrectly reversed. With this version, you'll hear this title as it was intended to be heard, without the channels reversed. And again, those reissues you've heard up until now - definitely still breathy, warm and rich - were made from something less than the master. Prepare to hear the veil removed.

Astrud Gilberto says that her husband, Joao, informed Stan Getz that she could sing at the recording. Creed Taylor recalls that it took Getz's wife, Monica, to get both Astrud and Joao into the recording studio; Mrs. Getz had a sense that Astrud could make a hit. And Getz himself is on record saying that he insisted on Astrud's presence over the others' objections. So who's right? What does it matter? The Gilbertos, Getz and the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim followed up the bossa nova success of Jazz Samba with this, the defining LP of the genre. With one of the greatest hit singles jazz has ever known - each one who hears it goes Ahhh!

Originally released in 1961, this historic album from João Gilberto is one of the great cornerstones of bossa nova. Accompanied by Tom Jobim (who wrote such standards as Garota de Ipanema and Desafinado) and organist Walter Wanderley (best known for his smooth Hammond playing and the 1966 hit Summer Samba), Gilberto plays songs like Samba da minha terra and O amôr em paz, both of which (along with most of the songs on this album) would soon become standards of the genre.

It was one of those rare nights of absolute communication - the New York City opening of the New Stan Getz Quartet.

Stan had chosen the Cafe Au Go Go for this occasion because of its fine acoustics and its intimacy. Atmosphere was paramount to the first New York presentation of the New Stan Getz Quartet and Astrud Gilberto because of the soft, easy quality of their music. Astrud had already won acclaim for her work with Getz in the album Getz/Gilberto (V/V 6-8548), which also stars Astrud's husband Joao Gilberto as well, and this threesome's single from the album The Girl From Ipanema was rapidly rising on the best-selling charts.

This, is the stunning New Stan Getz Quartet with Astrud Gilberto at Cafe Au Go Go. Reflected here are the excitement, warmth and communication of that memorable engagement." -Gene Lees, from the liner notes of Getz Au Go Go

Although the name Stan Getz (tenor sax) was initially synonymous with the West Coast cool scene during the mid-to-late 1950s, he likewise became a key component in the Bossa Nova craze of the early 1960s... Getz Au Go Go featuring Astrud Gilberto (1964) was the second-to-last album that he would issue during his self-proclaimed Bossa Nova Era- the final being Getz/Gilberto #2 [live] (1964) concert title from Carnegie Hall. ... the focus of Getz Au Go Go steers away from the Brazilian flavored fare, bringing Astrud Gilberto into the realm of a decidedly more North American style. That said, there are a few Antonio Carlos Jobim compositions - Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars); and One Note Samba - both of which would be considered as jazz standards in years to follow - as well as the lesser-circulated Eu E Voco.- All Music Guide

As much as I'd love to relay all kinds of anecdotes about the challenges Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray encounter during the mastering sessions, I witness none. These boys know the sound of the facility and the Van Gelder masters like the backs of their handsBack home a month later, I unpack some test pressings Chad Kassem has sent meI hear the most realistic-sounding drums ever reproduced by my system. It's as though I'm sitting at the point of creation, experiencing the same high that brought such gifted musicians together as one. Steve Hoffman, Kevin Gray, Chad Kassem, and Don MacInnis have done Rudy Van Gelder and his Blue Note artists proud. Jason Victor Serinus, Stereophile, April 2008

This program of sultry, minor key music with a Brazilian tinge seems inspired by Ike Quebec, who was suffering from advanced cancer that would claim his life three months later. But here is big-toned, impassioned tenor is in tact. Quebec's take on the bossa nova craze that explored that year (1962) is more muscular than Stan Getz's and doesn't rely on the familiar Jobim and Gilberto songs of the day. He and Kenny Burrell solo on the sly, subtle rhythms of Wendell Marshall, Willie Bobo and Garvin Masseaux.

Brazilliance (Pure Pleasure) (Out Of Stock)

More than seven years before Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd introduced the bossa nova of Antonio Carlos Jobim to American audiences, guitarist Laurindo Almeida and altoist Bud Shank (in a quartet with bassist Harry Babasin and drummer Roy Harte) recorded the intriguing music heard on this LP. The performances are very close to bossa nova in their combination of cool-toned jazz and Brazilian rhythms; in fact, these are arguably the first bossa nova recordings, long before even Jobim and Joao Gilberto initially recorded. Only four of the 14 tunes are not based on Brazilian folk songs, and many of the songs (particularly Carinoso) are quite memorable. This historically significant, very accessible, and highly recommended release is a gem.

    Musicians:

    • Laurindo Almeida (guitar)

    • Bud Shank (alto saxophone)

    • Harry Babasin (bass)

    • Roy Harte (drums)

    Recording: 1954

    Production: Richard Bock
