Including GOAT remix by Anton Newcombe from The Brian Jonestown Massacre. As usual, the album features some of the best acts of the underground scene on its side of the continent. The fifteen outfits taking part in the third volume - including Goat (mixed by Anton Newcombe of Brian Jonestown Massacre), Mugstar, The Oscillation, Camera are representative of the impressive diversity and quality of a scene that is much broader than its definition. While all of them are certainly inspired by Psychedelia, each one of them incorporates different elements of Blues, Folk, Rock & Roll, Stoner, Kraut Rock, Electronica, Noise, Ambient and more.. For the third time, the cover was created by iconic Icelandic artist and band member of Dead Skeletons, Jon Saemundur, aka Nonni Dead.

There is no direct association between mysterious Swedish
psychedelicists GOAT and Argentinian master of magical realism, Jorge
Luis Borges. Yet their mission appears to be the same. Borges generated
his ideas from historical curiosities across the globe-knife duels on the
South American plains, Middle Eastern heresiarchs, Chinese pirates-and
twisted them into fictions that blurred the lines between footnotes and
outright fantasy. GOAT's sound is the sonic embodiment of this principle,
working heavy psych-rock, Nigerian afrobeat, German krautrock, Anatolian
funk, and a host of other micro-niches into a hallucinatory celebration
    of rock's diverse manifestations.

Despite the success of GOAT's critically-acclaimed 2012 debut, World
Music, the individual identities involved remain shrouded in mystery:
GOAT performs in masks, and spokespersons maintain that the group
is simply an ongoing multi-generational collective of musicians from the
isolated, Swedish locality of Korpilombolo, a junction of native Sami
people, Scandinavian settlers, and the rare wayfaring outsiders. Beyond
that, GOAT divulges very little. It's as if GOAT are taking cues from Borges'
short story "Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius," wherein a clandestine enclave
of intellectuals attempt to create a new reality by inserting articles on a
fictitious, puzzling state into modern encyclopedias. Borges' secret
society wanted their heretical ideologies to infiltrate common thought
through an invented past; GOAT wants to revitalize the communal
experience of rock music by creating an alternate origin story.

Ultimately, it is GOAT's music that speaks the most about them, and
on Commune GOAT deliver a heavy dose of acidic grooves, hypnotic
incantations, and serpentine guitar lines, building on the much-lauded
sound of World Music to explore new territories. Starting with the layered
percussive groove, Eastern guitar flourishes, and convoking vocals of
"Talk To God," Commune re-establishes the trance-inducing rhythms
and exotic blaze of guitar that characterized World Music. From there,
the album launches into darker and more propulsive territories,
occasionally emerging for breaths of transcendental '60s psych-pop and
    driving proto-metal fuzz.

"GOAT is mainly a symbol of sacrifice. To sacrifice the individual for
the collective good. To become one with the rest of humanity and
universe," said an unnamed GOAT conspirator in a rare correspondence.
With that philosophy, GOAT is propagating their crossbred music and
mysticism by sharing Commune with the world. And, while we'll never
see GOAT's faces on the cover of a glossy magazine, their intoxicating
conjurations are poised to infiltrate our collective psyche with the
subversive magical allure of a Borgesian fable.

Remastered from Original Masters by Steve Albini and Bob Weston.

A head-splitting jolt of relentless anxiety, frantic paranoia, concussive racket, and oddball frenzy, The Jesus Lizards Goat became an instant indie-rock landmark upon its 1991 release. Instigating, cutthroat, and snarling through broken teeth, it became the blueprint followed by the likes of Nirvana, Helmet, Fugazi, and the Melvins, and its never sounded better!

Part of Touch & Gos stellar Jesus Lizard reissue campaign, the pioneering Goat has been meticulously remastered from the original tapes by Bob Weston (Mission of Burma, Shellac) and original engineer Steve Albini. The new pressing presents Goat in a sonic light that exceeds even the best expectations. Theres greater space between instruments, heightened dynamics, a more solidified mid-range, extended imaging, deeper soundstage, and an incredible boost in energy. Benefitting from Albinis dry, no-frills production, indie-rock has seldom sounded so dangerous, physical, or fervent.

Vinyl packaged in deluxe gatefold album jacket with 12 x 24 double sided color insert including never before seen photos, and extensive liner notes by the band and by journalists who were there when it was all happening.

    The Goat Rodeo Sessions

The last time cellist Yo-Yo Ma teamed with bassist Edgar Meyer and mandolin player Chris Thile (of Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers fame) for a classical/bluegrass hybrid, the result was the gold-selling Songs of Joy & Peace. Here, Ma, Meyer, and Thile are joined by fiddler Stuart Duncan in a different kind of string quartet.

The slang phrase goat rodeo, according the Urban Dictionary, is about the most polite term used by aviation people (and others in higher risk situations) to describe a scenario that requires about 100 things to go right at once if you intend to walk away from it. That may be overstating the case for a group of musicians, most of whom have worked together and succeeded before, but it also carries a rural connotation that is appropriate for music that is, for the most part, closer to bluegrass than classical. The tunes were written by Duncan, Meyer, and Thile, and Ma's role is largely supportive. After the fast pieces Attaboy and Quarter Chicken Dark, Helping Hand is the first slower number, with Thile switching to guitar and Duncan taking over the mandolin for a musical conversation between the two instruments.

Where's My Bow? is a violin/cello/bass trio with Thile sitting out, and it is one of the few tracks that leans more toward the classical side, boasting a big, dramatic finish. The more exotic Here and Heaven finds both Thile and Meyer at times playing the Renaissance instrument the gamba, as Duncan picks up a fretless banjo, all of them backing a vocal duet between Thile and Aoife O'Donovan of Crooked Still. Meyer moves to piano for the slow, thoughtful Franz and the Eagle, another piece that has more of a classical bent.

The rest of the album is in a progressive bluegrass mode, Less Is Moi mixing several short themes and allowing room for improvisation, and 13:8 taken quickly, with Duncan and Thile interacting briskly. It doesn't really seem as if 100 things had to go right for The Goat Rodeo Sessions to work; it only required four or five talented musicians to play and sing in sympathetic unity, and that they did, making this a satisfying experience for more adventurous classical and bluegrass fans.

Another Weekend / Ode To The Goat

Ariel Pink sets a serene but complicated scene for the next chapter in his curious career with Another Weekend, the first solo material heard since the prog-pop opus, Pom Pom. Contrary to the lyrics of Another Weekend (and fortunately for both fanatics and the newly initiated), Pink is neither too shy or humble to have brought his singular style of pop music beyond the bedroom for the befuddled masses over the past two decades, but returned to the formative, familiar setting to craft what will surely live as another shimmering moment in an unrivaled canon. Encapsulating the lingering euphoria of a regrettable weekend over the edge, Another Weekend speaks in morose volumes while whispering sweetly, the dichotomy of Pink's pathos once again on display. Backed with Ode To The Goat (Thank You), Another Weekend will be shared as a 7 single and through conventional music serving mechanisms via Mexican Summer.

Anthony Wilson, best known as a jazz guitarist, has released an organic, occasionally 'noir-ish'-sounding album on which he sets up and sings within cinematic musical landscapes, proving himself to be an equally compelling story teller. Frogtown is an area of Los Angeles, whose official name is Elysian Valley. People live there but other than a lush stretch of the L.A. riverbed, there's not much there, which is how the people like it. The same can't be said of this record, which will have you wondering from where came this Anthony Wilson? ... the album's sound and the deftly drawn arrangements (for some reason uncredited) perfectly compliment Wilson's dreamy, rural intentions (producer Joe Harley gets a 'audio consultation' credit). The sound achieves a rare level of transparency, delicacy and three-dimensionality in today's hard-edged audio world. Bernie Grundman cut lacquers from what I assume were high resolution files. I doubt you'll ask yourself 'why buy the vinyl?' after your first listen. - Music = 10/11; Sound = 10/11 - Michael Fremer,

Frogtown, a new album of original instrumental and vocal songs, is guitarist Anthony Wilson's widest-ranging work to date, and his debut as a vocalist. Wilson enlisted Grammy-winning producer/bassist Mike Elizondo (Gary Clark Jr., Kimbra, Ry Cooder), a longtime friend and musical colleague, to help him realize this collection of layered and personal sonic stories.

Featuring a cast of renowned musicians - drummers Jim Keltner and Matt Chamberlain, violinist Petra Haden, and keyboardists Patrick Warren and Josh Nelson - each song on Frogtown evokes a distinct feeling and landscape, and takes the listener someplace new. Virtuosic guitar and ensemble work, well-made songs and detailed arrangements, and intimate vocals are the driving forces of the album.

An album highlight is the song Your Footprints - written by Wilson with songwriter Dan Wilson (Adele, Taylor Swift, Semisonic) - featuring a special guest appearance from iconic jazz saxophonist Charles Lloyd. The collaboration with Lloyd alludes to Wilson's deep jazz roots, and evokes memories of his father, the late, great composer/bandleader Gerald Wilson. Other songs summon varied musical influences - FM radio of the 1970's, Ry Cooder's diverse body of work, children's rhymes, guitar styles from the 1920's to the present day.

Frogtown travels into, through, and beyond genres; the album's melodies and lyrics guide the listener through tender and complex emotional landscapes. Anthony Wilson steps confidently into the center of the frame for this musical and personal portrait.

    Get Lonely

Get Lonely is every bit as assured as its predecessor, The Sunset Tree, but the mood is entirely different. Sunset chronicled the fraught, violent relationship between John Darnielle and his stepfather and derived its power from an unblinking exorcism of personal demons, while Get Lonely is the haunted aftermath. It's a reflective, intimate record. The mood is one of bittersweet resignation rather than cathartic release. It's a quiet triumph, murmuring with a modest but entirely surefooted confidence. An uncannily coherent and subtly redemptive record which will come to be seen as Mountain Goats' most resonant, assured, and magical collection of songs so far.

    Heretic Pride

The Mountain Goats have recorded four fine albums that have established them as a genuine cult phenomenon and confirmed John Darnielle's status as one of the finest lyricists of his generation. Heretic Pride is a suite of songs about mythical creatures, imaginary cults, slasher films, and pulp fiction novelists. Here, Darnielle has also come up with some of the most anthemic, impassioned, and downright catchy songs of his career. It's rare to come across such specific and purposeful prose in modern pop. The Mountain Goats' new album is called All Eternals Deck. The songs cluster around themes of hidden things and the dread that hidden things inspire, says singer/songwriter John Darnielle, but also the excitement, the attraction, the magnetic draw that scary unknown hidden things exert. The title refers to an apocryphal tarot deck. The band approached recording sessions for All Eternals Deck as commando raids on multiple studios with several producers. We wanted to see how disparate seasons and moods and locations and producers would play out in the songs, explains Darnielle.

    All Hail West Texas

The last of the all-home-recordings albums by the Mountain Goats and the only one about which that claim is true, All Hail West Texas was originally released as a free-standing compact disc on the late, lamented Emperor Jones. That was about a decade ago. The songs were originally transferred from the cassettes onto which they were recorded to 1/4 reels at Tiny Telephone by Alex Newport, who also played in Fudge Tunnel. John got really excited when he realized his tapes were being EQ'd by the guy from Fudge Tunnel.

Remastered from those reels, along with 7 unearthed songs from the two surviving contemporaneous cassettes, All Hail West Texas stands as the peak of the Mountain Goats' home recording era, a time people like to refer to as when John Darnielle had his four-track, except John did not actually use a four-track. He used the condenser mic of a Panasonic boombox and there was no overdubbing. All songs recorded on the day they were written, usually within minutes of the actual composition. Highlights include Jenny, Fall of the Star High School Running Back, and The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton, a song which has compelled audiences around the globe to yell Hail Satan, and to mean it.

Package art features a newly penned 1,800-word essay by John detailing his songwriting and recording process for the album.

The Life of the World To Come

The Mountain Goats have been making records since that mythical time when the term tape-only label didn't require any elaborate explanation, but have been recording and touring in their current incarnation since 2007. That current incarnation consists of John Darnielle, Peter Hughes and Jon Wurster, who, having toured Australia, England, and the U.S. several times (and a cruise ship once), recorded The Life of the World to Come across three studios with three producers from April through June of 2009: with Brandon Eggleston at Chicago's Electrical Audio; with John Congleton at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas; and with Scott Solter at Baucom Road in Monroe, North Carolina. Owen Pallet, with whom the band shared a stage in Australia this past January at the Meredith Music Festival, arranged and played strings. The Life of the World to Come's 12 songs all originate, one way or another, in the Bible, though none of the band, as of press time, had joined the Vineyard Fellowship.

The theme this time around is goth, a subject closer to my heart perhaps than that of any Mountain Goats album previous. And while John writes the songs, as he always has, it feels more than ever like he's speaking for all of us in the band, erstwhile goths (raises hand) or otherwise, for these are songs that approach an identity most often associated with youth from a perspective that is inescapably adult. Anyone old enough to have had the experience of finding oneself at sea in a cultural landscape that's suddenly indecipherable will empathize with Pat Travers showing up to a Bauhaus show looking to jam, for example.

But underneath the outward humor, there is evident throughout a real tenderness toward, and solidarity with, our former fellow travelers-the friends whose bands never made it out of Fender's Ballroom, the Gene Loves Jezebels of the world-the ones whose gothic paths were overtaken by the realities of life, or of its opposite. It's something we talk about a lot, how fortunate and grateful we are to share this work, a career that's become something more rewarding and fulfilling than I think any of us could have imagined. We all know how easily it could've gone the other way, and indeed for a long time did.

    Beat the Champ

Beat the Champ is about professional wrestling, which was an avenue of escape for me when I was a kid.
Wrestling was low-budget working class entertainment back then, strictly UHF material. It was cheap theater.
You had to bring your imagination to the proceedings and you got paid back double. I wrote these songs to
re-immerse myself in the blood and fire of the visions that spoke to me as a child, and to see what more there
might be in them now that I'm grown.

    Runaljod Ragnarok

Wardruna is finally ready to present their next album entitled 'Runaljod - Ragnarok'. It is the third installment in a trilogy of albums that began with 'Runaljod - gap var Ginnunga' (2009) and continued with 'Runaljod - Yggdrasil' (2013). In short, the ambitious idea behind the trilogy was to create musical interpretations of each of the twenty-four old Nordic runes. It proved to be a lengthy and challenging task. Some of the material on the album even date back to 2003 and the early stages of the project, when multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Einar Selvik started to develop the genre-defying sound and style that Wardruna have become known for. It is a contemporary sound, but one that is characterized by the use of old and historical instruments like Kraviklyra, taglharpe, goat horns, birchbark lures and more. The vocals range from whispering voices to melodic song and mighty choirs. All performed with sincerity and conviction.

Musically and conceptually there is a clear continuity between all three of the albums, but with time and experience comes refinement. And new elements has certainly been added along the way. Most notable on 'Runaljod - Ragnarok' is the use of the Scandinavian bronze lures, whose iconic sound and appearance make them a perfect fit with Wardruna's instrumentation and concept. Special guest performances by Einar's own children and Skarvebarna children's choir must also be noted.

'Runaljod - Ragnarok' was written, recorded and produced by Einar Selvik from 2003 to 2016 at his own Fimbulljóð studio.

A short tour in support of the album will commence in November, with concerts in Norway, Germany, Poland, Netherlands, France, Sweden, Denmark and the UK. Many of the concerts were sold out quickly and further touring is planned for 2017. The saga continues.

    From Darkness

Brutal and aggressive, local band I Exist have belted out a hummer of a third album. Like being thumped repeatedly by a blunt stone, these men know how to impress themselves upon your ears.

A confident, at times understated, and well grooved effort, I Exist lock in and hammer out track after sludgy track. Recorded in Melbourne's Goat Sound Studios, the album was mixed by Phillip Cope and Jay Matheson (The Jam Room, South Carolina).
The result is an album that motors along like a Chevy-powered speedboat. With Blood Duster's Jason Fuller at the production helm, my stomach for metal sonics was well and truly fed. Eat up.

Imagine this: Tarantino's Django sacrifices a goat on stage while intimidating slave chants roar and screeching guitar riffs burn in the background. Then the rhythmic chain rattling evoking a satanic summoning makes way for the eerily familiar melodies of Norwegian black metal. This genre mix that has been garnering attention online since April 2016 belongs to Zeal & Ardor.

The forthcoming album 'Devil Is Fine' thematically revolves around more typical black metal fare - rituals, human sacrifice, fire, and blood. Zeal & Ardor take the blaspheme up a notch by delivering the lyrics in the fashion of slave spirituals sung by chain gangs. Black metal from the cotton fields.

Zeal & Ardor is the one-man brainchild of Swiss-American musician Manuel Gagneux. His approach draws on an alternate history and stems from two thoughts: Christianity was imposed upon American slaves (just as it was imposed in Norway) and black metal in the '90s grew as a rebellion to monotheism. What would have happened if American slaves had rebelled in the same way? Or put bluntly: what would satanic spirituals sound like?

Gagneux comments, Devil Is Fine was not created thinking that this many would ever hear it. There is no stylistic compromise or pandering on it. Only things I personally like."
