Global A Go-GoEven when he was leading the Clash, Joe Strummer always incorporated his interest in disparate musical styles into his work. 20 years down the road, he's achieved enough distance from the Clash to express himself fully and freely, so GLOBAL A GO-GO is Strummer's most stylistically diverse offering to date. The album opens with the American folk motifs of Johnny Appleseed before moving on to the churning, funky Cool 'N' Out. The title tune combines hypnotic trip-hop keyboards, reggae guitar, and percolating percussion to celebrate the joys of international communication. Bhindi Bhagee successfully combines electronica beats with Eastern tonalities. Gamma Ray is a surreal Cuban-style slow-burner that recalls the Latin Playboys. Mondo Bongo and Shaktar Donetsk sound like excerpts from a film noir soundtrack set somewhere in Morocco. The album closes with the epic 17-minutes-plus Minstrel Boy, a folkish selection filled with atmospheric fiddle and acoustic guitar, nearly all instrumental. It continues the soundtrack-like feeling achieved by the earlier cuts, and leaves the listener flouting on a cloud of hazy Celtic mist. Throughout the album, Strummer evinces his trademark socio-political awareness in the lyrics, but he sounds much less angry than in punk's glory days. Sometimes maturity can work for you.1. I Will BeI Will Be is the debut full-length by the Dum Dum Girls. Recorded at home by Dee Dee and mixed with the help of Richard Gottehrer (Strangeloves, Voidoids, Blondie, The Go-Gos and, more recently, The Raveonettes), I Will Be is a decidedly medium-fi record. Chain Gang Of LoveImport
'Chain Gang Of Love', originally released in August 2003, is The Raveonettes' first full length album after they debuted with the critically acclaimed 'Whip It On' mini album in 2002.
Their sound has often been compared with that of the noisy and distorted Jesus And Mary Chain, while the Velvet Underground and even the vocal harmonies of the Everly Brothers are never far away either. The most noticeable difference in sound between the debut EP, which had all songs in B-flat minor, and this album is that here all songs are in B-flat major. The result is an album drenched in an uplifting fifties and sixties sound.
Because of this wall of sound you might expect a Phil Spector production, but Sune Rose Wagner himself (one half of the Danish duo which is The Raveonettes) and Richard Gottehrer (producer for a.o. Blondie and The Go-Go's, and founder of Sire Records) were responsible for this remarkable and uplifting release.Side A

Too Tough To LiveDan Sartain returns with the new album Too Tough To Live, 13-tracks delivered in under 19 minutes! That's an average strike rate of a new tune every 1 minute and 30 seconds. Recorded at Lucky Cat, San Francisco, Too Tough To Live finds Sartain running fresh out of patience with a whole itinerary of hassles: department stores, death, the unseeing eye, the all-seeing eye, heaven, hell, Vietnam, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and you.
Too Tough To Live also boasts a guest appearance by singer/guitarist Jane Wiedlin of The Go-Go's on Now Now Now. The two met at a brain trust of sorts in San Francisco known as a Star Track convention. After some begging and name dropping, Wieldlin was convinced to join Sartain here, achieving one of the album's highlights in the process.
The new set finds Sartain operating at the opposite end of his range to that of 2009's Dan Sartain Lives. With adequate production values and some musical chops, the down stroke ridden Too Tough To Live is a tribute to when punk was the real deal!1. Nam Vet

ADAD-SUB-0950xDum Dum Girls
Only In DreamsOn several levels, Dum Dum Girls second full length Only in Dreams is a great leap forward for a gifted songwriter and an equally gifted band. It's heavy, deeply personal stuff and surely unprecedented for this style of music. The first record was basically the first songs I'd ever written, says band-leader Dee Dee, and I was thinking nostalgically about being a teenager. This record, it was pretty much impossible not to write about very recent, very real things.
Very real things indeed: Dee Dee wrote Hold Your Hand immediately after her mother (the pretty lady on the cover of both the Dum Dum Girls' self-titled 2009 debut EP and their 2010 debut album I Will Be) was diagnosed with what turned out to be a fatal illness, and it's one of several songs on Only in Dreams that unsparingly trace her mom's passing. Other songs spell out the emotional toll of separation from one's lover, something Dee Dee had to deal with while she and her husband (Brandon Welchez of the acclaimed noise-pop band Crocodiles) pursued their own tour schedules.
Only in Dreams more than fulfills the promise of 2011s acclaimed and fast-selling He Gets Me High EP. It retains Dum Dum Girls' signature blend of the girl-gang eyeliner punk of the Shangri-Las, the trashy propulsion of the Cramps, and the moody atmospherics of Mazzy Star, but for the first time, all four Dum Dum Girls play and sing on the album. Now the harmonies have more depth, Jules plays her own distinctive guitar leads, and the Bambi (bass)/Sandy (drums) rhythm section powers the music like a vintage V-8 engine. Best of all, tons of time on the road, including two massively successful headlining tours, have molded Dum Dum Girls into a very formidable rock & roll band, giving the music an undeniable force.
And now that power and glory is showcased by full-on studio production, while I Will Be was recorded at home and modestly spiffed up in a studio by legendary pop maestro Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, Go-Go's), Only in Dreams was recorded at Josh Homme's Pink Duck Studios, and Gottehrer again produced, this time with Sune Rose Wagner from the Raveonettes.
Only in Dreams represents a musical evolution for Dum Dum Girls and a personal one for Dee Dee, and that's no coincidence. I'm for real, she says. We all are. I'm really passionate about this, it's all I know. And maybe we've just grown up a bit, or grown out a bit. There's some weight to what we do, and a pure intent, and I think that comes across on this album.1. Always Looking

And they are glorious, beautiful. Sounding a bit like She &
Him might were they produced by Sufjan Stevens - to create a
sort of She & She & She & She, they are four alt-pop Brontës
who beam right into your stereo like a comforting aural torch
you never need to buy batteries for. - Drowned In Sound
"Best referenced midway between the Bangles and Go-Gos in
terms of a girl group approach, there's a kind of slacker
sensibility at work here, one that never muffles the drive or
conviction. I was meant for something more, Cottingham
sings on the final track, aptly entitled Anything and indeed a
lyric has never sounded so true." - Blurt
Precociousness always catches its observer off guard; we are
witness to a stubborn incongruity, a disproportionate relationship
between limited years and elevated levels of skill, insight, or
vision. It confounds common experience, and we wonder. When
Ortolan's debut album Time On A String was released in 2010,
three quarters of the family foursome were yet under drinking
age. Along with copious kudos given to the quality of the music
and the maturity of the songwriting, every single review made
mention of their age. Wonder indeed.
What may be the greater marvel though, is when a nascent talent
starts to grow into itself; when prodigious promise begins to
deliver something beyond spectacle, when it begins to nourish
those who are witness to it. Such is the case with Ortolan's latest,
Covered In Black.
The pulse at the heart of Ortolan's music has always been
Stephanie Cottingham's voice, a curious combination of
innocence, wisdom, and wit (all rare commodities in the greater
landscape of popular music today). These beguiling qualities
remain, but here her voice is imbued with a greater richness. The
bandwidth of color, hue, and shade has widened; the reds are
redder and the blues are bluer. Even more significant though, is
Cottingham's development as an interpreter of her own songs.
Her voice remains a thing to behold, but in the tradition of Kitty
Wells, Etta James, or Emmylou Harris, she is becoming a
storyteller. Each note is now is its own scene in a greater drama.
Each vocal push and lilt tells of loss and love, fear and
As much as Ortolan is about Stephanie Cottingham's voice and
songwriting, it is about family, and the picture is incomplete
without the powerful presence of Jill (keys), Briana (bass), and
Lara (drums). Floor toms drum and drive, strumming guitars
strum and strum faster, basses rock and keyboards swirl and
swoop. Their commitment to one another is palpable, and is as
important to the music as the notes and rhythms they're playing.
That their voices also join Stephanie's throughout the record is
not insignificant. There is an excess of animosity in the world: so
much time is spent competing, resisting, debating, conflicting,
arguing. There is something so vital and humane in joining voices
for once, in unison. One of the simplest and most powerful
activities of human beings is singing together, and this is a
central ingredient to Ortolan's music and life. Nothing is
pretended-it's what they do: voices are raised and raised
together -- to cry, to question, to pray, to laugh, to celebrate.
The color black is achieved through the mixing of different
paints and opposing pigments; as such, black represents the
presence of color, not the absence of it, and Ortolan's latest is
covered in it.1. Bottle's Broken

Poetry In MotionSOJA, the internationally acclaimed GRAMMY-nominated eight-piece from Washington D.C., will release its new album 'Poetry in Motion' via ATO Records.
SOJA's core sound an uplifting meld of reggae, go-go, D.C. hardcore, Latin, rock, and hip-hop is as tight and compelling as it's ever been in the group's 20-year history, but now the group digs deeper on its message of finding peace and understanding in the world caught in tribulation. For the band, having fun and social awareness can, and should, co-exist.
Lead singer Jacob Hemphill explains, 'Poetry in Motion is about us, the human race. We're beautiful. We're the caretakers of this earth and everything that lives here, calls it home. House Of WooMaxmillion Dunbar's House of Woo is raised on a solid foundation of love. Maxmillion dunbar is one half of Beautiful Swimmers and don behind the Future Times record label. Dunbar first tried his fingers at programming hip hop beats and eventually introduced his rogue breed of house music to the dance world via 2010's Cool Water.
House of Woo counters Cool Water's darkness with shimmering, dazzling light. It is a pure blast of bliss inspired by Dunbar and his girlfriend's deeply rooted relationship. Themes of their devotion never appear lyrically, but ebb in the album's emotional flow. House of Woo's architecture is free of fabricated rigidity, but does bare structural resemblance to some of dance music's outer limit moments. Theo Parrish's narrative masterpiece Parallel Dimensions is touchstone on a track like "Coins For The Canopy", while the cerebral techno of Newworldaquarium takes moving, grooving form on "The Figurine" and album namesake "Woo."
In percussive corners throughout House of Woo, Dunbar drums up native DC Go-Go spirits and skitters into Jersey swing on tracks like "ice room Graffiti". Dunbar deviates even further from the blueprint on "For Mozy" and "Shampoo", pieces that haunt House of Woo with their spectral, synthetic wash outs. Whether showing respect and love for his influences or for his peers and those
even nearer and dearer, Dunbar stands in the doorway waiting with a warm invitation to anyone ready to dance, embrace, and inhabit forever the House of Woo.LP 1

Live In San Francisco 1971The closing of the Fillmore West (actually, the Carousel Ballroom) put a big dent in the 'City By the Bay'. This performance was taken from the closing concerts for the venue. The list of bands that Bill Graham didn't want was also big, and the Flamin' Groovies were on it, for years. Our first manager was Bill's right-hand man and when he quit working for Bill to manage the Flamin' Groovies this did not sit well with Bill, so the Groovies went up and down in Bill's eyes. So it came as a big surprise when we discovered he wanted us for this big and important event, to participate in a series of shows leading up to the closing of this legendary venue. I remember the show well. The difference in playing this gig as opposed to the Whisky-A-Go-Go in L.A. was like night and day. At the Whisky, we were the house band (two summers in a row); att the Fillmore, we were up for grabs. Oh yeah, this was our last show with my good buddy, Roy Loney.

Live From Austin, TX (David Byrne)David Byrne is a modern renaissance man - and that's not just a clichÉ. From the heady days as co-founder of the celebrated art new wave group Talking Heads (1976-88) through his own constantly evolving and innovative solo music career, he has pursued his muse on many different artistic fronts. He's been the driving force behind a body of work that has been both intellectually daring and commercially successful...and he shows no signs of slowing down decades later. This show, captured on November 28, 2001, came on the heels of his hit single, "Like Humans Do" and the release of the album Look Into The Eyeball, which was another typically eclectic musical stew reflecting a variety of styles and influences, from Philly soul to a D.C. Go-Go inspired groove and his first-ever Spanish composition, "Desconocido Soy." Critics at the time called it his best work in years, and his performance on the Austin City Limits stage shows why. Joined by Austin's own eclectic tango ensemble Tosca, Byrne takes us down many different musical roads in his ACL debut. Of course, besides the brilliant songwriter and performer that he is, he's also an accomplished performance artist, photographer, web journalist, film writer/director, composer of motion picture soundtracks, and founder of his own world music label, Luaka Bop Records. He also has a collection of Grammys, Oscars and Golden Globes on his mantel. His music may be complex and poetic, but he makes no bones about his ultimate intent: "I want to move people to dance and cry at the same time.

The Edgar Winter/Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series Continues!
Celebrate 4 Decades Of Edgar Winter's White Trash
First Time 180 Gram White Vinyl!
Featuring Guitar Legends: Johnny Winter & Rick Derringer
The legendary rocker and blues statesman Edgar Winter continues to enthrall audiences the world over.
With his unique brand of musical genius and keyboard, sax and vocal prowess, Edgar's style will always be truly
unmatched in purity and longevity.
While he tours, produces and records non-stop, it's no secret that his live shows have always been top notch
and legendary. In 1972, Edgar Winter along with his band White Trash played a series of shows at the famed Apollo
Theatre and Academy Of Music in New York City, plus the Whisky A Go-Go in L.A. Luckily, Epic Records captured
the prolific event on tape and the amazing album Roadwork was born.
For Roadwork, the artist surely becomes a superstar on this mammoth 2 LP set. Featuring rock and soul classics
like Chuck Berry's Back In the U.S.A. and Otis Redding's I Can't Turn You Loose, plus tunes from his first two
albums like the epic 17 minute version of Tobacco Road, Roadwork proves to be a never ending festival of rock,
blues, gospel and R&B earth shattering performances. The band features his friends like guitar hero Rick Derringer
as well as power vocalist Jerry LaCroix, and of course his late great brother Johnny Winter brings the house down
with his surprise visit on the smash hit Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo.
The masterpiece was also a primer for a lot of rockers who for the first time would be treated to the likes of
musical pioneers like Bobby "Blue" Bland thanks to the late great Jerry LaCroix's shuddering vocal performance
on the album closer Turn On Your Lovelight.
Edgar Winter's artistry is no stranger to the Friday Music label, therefore it is with much honor to announce
the first time 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl release of his classic Edgar Winter's White Trash Roadwork album. For
a very short time, this monumental masterwork is being presented on 180 Gram White Vinyl and featuring the
original gatefold LP artwork, not seen in years in this format.

You Know Who You AreHaving recorded five albums in ten years and toured extensively in support of all of them, Nada Surf - singer/guitarist Matthew Caws, bassist Daniel Lorca, drummer Ira Elliot and guitarist Doug Gillard (now official fourth member, more on that later) - opted to follow 2012's cracking The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy with a brief but well-earned hiatus. So in January 2015, when Caws informed Nada Surf's vociferous Facebook following that a new record was just about done, the news was greeted with explosive enthusiasm.
The music was in the can, he announced, and all that remained was to finish up a few lyrics and sing a few vocals; something he planned to do on off-days off during an upcoming solo acoustic tour. Caws even included a photo of the recording set-up he was bringing in the car. "I was so eager to have an album done that I believed in it as it was," Caws recalls. "But the great thing about being 'finished' is that you can take a breath and evaluate, because the pressure to 'do it' is gone. The more I listened and thought about it, the more I realized that I might want to keep working. Also, I'd sent the tracks to my friend Josh, who runs Barsuk Records, the label we've been on since 2002, and he said 'It's great,' but followed that with a pregnant pause. I got the message. I didn't take that as a critique as much as a belief that I could do better. It was very freeing."
And lo and behold, what would have been another really good Nada Surf album (their seventh since getting signed to a major in the go-go 90's and scoring a worldwide alterna-hit with "Popular") became what could well be the most representative collection of the group's two-decade career, all while pushing towards whatever comes next. Captured in the album's 10 tracks is every beloved facet of the band, but You Know Who You Are also finds much on offer that stands apart from anything previously heard in the band's diverse catalog.1. Betty DavisOne can hardly imagine the genre-busting, culture-crossing musical magic of Outkast, Prince, Erykah Badu, Rick James, The Roots, or even the early Red Hot Chili Peppers without the influence of R&B pioneer Betty Davis. Her style of raw and revelatory punk-funk defies any notions that women can't be visionaries in the worlds of rock and pop. In recent years, rappers from Ice Cube to Talib Kweli to Ludacris have rhymed over her intensely strong but sensual music.
There is one testimonial about Betty Davis that is universal: she was a woman ahead of her time. In our contemporary moment, this may not be as self-evident as it was thirty years ago - we live in an age that's been profoundly changed by flamboyant flaunting of female sexuality: from Parlet to Madonna, Lil Kim to Kelis. Yet, back in 1973 when Betty Davis first showed up in her silver go-go boots, dazzling smile and towering Afro, who could you possibly have compared her to? Marva Whitney had the voice but not the independence. Labelle wouldn't get sexy with their "Lady Marmalade" for another year while Millie Jackson wasn't "Feelin' Bitchy" until 1977. Even Tina Turner, the most obvious predecessor to Betty's fierce style wasn't completely out of Ike's shadow until later in the decade.
Ms. Davis's unique story, still sadly mostly unknown, is unlike any other in popular music. Betty wrote the song "Uptown" for the Chambers Brothers before marrying Miles Davis in the late '60s, influencing him with psychedelic rock, and introducing him to Jimi Hendrix - personally inspiring the classic album 'Bitches Brew.'
But her songwriting ability was way ahead of its time as well. Betty not only wrote every song she ever recorded and produced every album after her first, but the young woman penned the tunes that got The Commodores signed to Motown. The Detroit label soon came calling, pitching a Motown songwriting deal, which Betty turned down. Motown wanted to own everything. Heading to the UK, Marc Bolan of T. Rex urged the creative dynamo to start writing for herself. A common thread throughout Betty's career would be her unbending Do-It-Yourself ethic, which made her quickly turn down anyone who didn't fit with the vision. She would eventually say no to Eric Clapton as her album producer, seeing him as too banal.
In 1973, Davis would finally kick off her cosmic career with an amazingly progressive hard funk and sweet soul self-titled debut. Davis showcased her fiercely unique talent and features such gems as "If I'm In Luck I Might Get Picked Up" and "Game Is My Middle Name." The album Betty Davis was recorded with Sly & The Family Stone's rhythm section, sharply produced by Sly Stone drummer Greg Errico, and featured backing vocals from Sylvester and the Pointer Sisters.1. "[Jon Cleary's] genre-bending style is steeped in early traditional New Orleans R&B, soul and funk. " - LA Times
GoGo Juice is the new album from one of New Orleans' premier musical ambassadors, Jon Cleary. Made in collaboration with multi-Grammy winning producer John Porter (B.B. King, Keb Mo, Ryan Adams, Los Lonely Boys) each of the carefully crafted songs is a delicate balance of the smooth and the rough; instantly memorable hooks over a set of sophisticated and soulful arrangements. The tracks were recorded over several days deep in the bayou country of Louisiana and subsequently honed in his studio in the old Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans. A blend of musical intelligence with direct, accessible pop simplicity that draws from tradition and yet is distinctively separate from it, these songs represent the many aspects of Cleary's musical personality as a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter.1.
