Chinatown SoundtrackNewly Remastered Audio
Housed In A Deluxe Stoughton Tip-On Jacket
Sometimes, it doesn't take very long to create something brilliant. When producer Robert Evans rejected Phillip Lambro's original score for Chinatown, Jerry Goldsmith was hired to create another, from scratch, in just 10 days.
To say he rose to the challenge is an understatement. Goldsmith, a 20 year veteran of the TV and movie industry with credits including Dr. Kildare, Planet Of The Apes and even The Waltons theme, turned in a work that was both a career peak for him and the savior of Roman Polanski's masterpiece of neo-noir.
What was clever about it? It wasn't quite straight jazz, it wasn't quite classical. It was identifiably a movie soundtrack, but an unusual one at that, leaning heavily on Uan Rasey's mournful trumpet solos, sparingly using pianos, harps, strings and percussion, and employing sounds and crashes as overtures. It doesn't try to speak to the film's 1930s setting so much as to the mood and feel of the movie, a piece about political and moral corruption in a water-starved LA featuring Jack Nicholson at the absolute top of his game.
"I remember [Evans] speaking about the music having a contemporary feel, contemporary meaning the '30s," Goldsmith said in an interview before his 2004 death. "I said, 'Bob, I don't think so - you see that on the screen, why should I do that in the underscore? Emotions are timeless.'"
Originally released as a soundtrack in 1974, and long out of print, Cinewax's reissue is remastered from the original tapes and is presented with brand new artwork by acclaimed illustrator and painter Sterling Hundley, with layout by Jay Shaw. Drop the needle and hear why Chinatown is, reportedly, David Lynch's favorite soundtrack. Goldsmith was right about emotions1. Love Theme From Chinatown (Main Title)

Rudy SoundtrackColored Vinyl
Almost a decade after their first sports-themed collaboration, the basketball classic Hoosiers, composer Jerry Goldsmith reunited with director David Anspaugh for 1993's Rudy, the inspirational true-life tale of Daniel Ruettiger, a walk-on football player who beats the odds to earn a spot on the Notre Dame roster. Goldsmith's score effortlessly communicates the commitment and will that drive Rudy to succeed, and what would no doubt seem mawkish and sentimental in the hands of a lesser composer proves genuinely rousing here. Alien (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)Mondo is proud to present Jerry Goldsmith's score to Ridley Scott's 1979 masterpiece, Alien. An absolute essential soundtrack for not only fans of the franchise, but of the legendary composer, and of science fiction and horror cinema itself. There is no doubt Alien is a monumental achievement in movie making, it's tense, terrifying and pretty damn untouchable. The score by Jerry Goldsmith is an absolute masterclass in building tension and scaring the hell out of you within the film but it also is a beautifully orchestrated stand alone listen full of excitement that harks back to many of the rollicking adventure scores of the 40s & 50s.LP 1

North HillsAs you begin to listen to Dawes' debut album and especially songs like the bittersweet That Western Skyline and the patient Love Is All I Am, you start to realize that this band isn't interested in the bells and whistles. The Los Angeles quartet, Taylor Goldsmith (vocals, guitar), Griffin Goldsmith (drums, vocals), Wylie Gelber (bass) and Tay Strathairn (piano, vocals) seem to get all their musicianship and expression across through the inherent nature of the instruments. They seem to have their utmost respect for the song itself, only stepping out when a song calls for it, relying on the other to keep the holes filled and the ship sailing smoothly, letting the music reflect their own personal relationships to the listener.

We're All Gonna DieDawes' highly anticipated new album We're All Gonna Die will be released via the band's own HUB Records.
Of the album, Taylor Goldsmith (guitar, vocals) explains, "Pretty much every song on this record explores a difficult situation and tries to find a way to find the good in it, or at least remind yourself that it's not always that big of a deal. After all, as scary as it is, we are all gonna die."
The album was produced by Grammy nominated producer Blake Mills (Alabama Shakes) and includes backing vocals from Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe of Lucius, Mandy Moore and Will Oldham.
Dawes has toured extensively playing headline shows worldwide and major festival appearances including Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, Lollapalooza and Newport Folk Festival. Recently, they have toured with My Morning Jacket, Bob Dylan, Mumford and Sons, Conor Oberst, and Jackson Browne.
In the fall of 2014, Goldsmith contributed to Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes, an album project which found collaborators Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens (Carolina Chocolate Drops), Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Marcus Mumford (Mumford & Sons) and producer T Bone Burnett writing and creating music for a treasure trove of recently discovered lyrics handwritten by Bob Dylan in 1967 during the period that generated the recording of the legendary Basement Tapes.
Fellow collaborator Jim James proclaims about We're All Gonna Die, "The record sounds so fresh-yet fills me with a strange nostalgia for things that haven't happened yet...I hear it at the beach and blasting out of car windows on future summer nights...easily having become a natural part of people's lives."1. Middle BrotherMiddle Brother (Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, John McCauley of Deer Tick and Matthew Vasquez of Delta Spirit) played their first show at 2010's SXSW, a tiny late-night unannounced event under the moniker MG&V. Other than recording the album and rehearsing once, they had never played the songs live. The audience (and the mob of onlookers crammed in the doorways and windows) were treated to an impossible-to-forget set by a band of musical comrades who seemed genuinely surprised by the fire that was ignited on stage. It was a rollicking and boisterous show that could have fallen apart at any moment and instead centrifuged into melodic and harmonic brilliance. What held it together was each member's sense of song and performance, a perfect, intuitive balance of craft and feel, equal parts playful and earnest.
In a time when synthesizers and laptops are taking over stages, Goldsmith, McCauley and Vasquez are leading the pack of young rock songwriters who strive to carry on the tradition of figures such as Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Warren Zevon and Tom Petty. Middle Brother came together in mid-2009 when the three song-smiths realized, after several on-stage collaborations, that they shared a unique vision and wanted to take it one step further, into the studio. Their songs are anthemic, soulful, passionate and confessional.
The 12 tracks on Middle Brother are the result of their off-the-cuff yet diligent workshop experience. The songs are world-class, the performances raw and immediate as each member pushed the other to bring the best of what they do to the proceedings. The record captures a potent moment in time for these three burgeoning songwriting stars who are just beginning to feel the real power in their respective talents. The members of Middle Brother are confident, but not resolute and stuck. They are willing to explore and are open to each others ideas as they work towards the common ideal of the redemptive power of the song.1. Daydreaming

Dad CountryNashville songwriter Jonny Fritz's work ethic and boldness have paid off in spades. It's been a big year for Jonny with opening stints for Alabama Shakes, Deer Tick, Dawes, Shooter Jennings and kudos from CMT and Rolling Stone, among many others. He signed his deal this week (he actually signed the deal with gravy at Nashville landmark Arnold's Country Kitchen), and his third full-length album, Dad Country, is set for release on April 16, 2013.
Produced by Jonny and Dawes' Taylor Goldsmith, recorded at Jackson Browne's Los Angeles studio and finished up in Music City, USA; this breakthrough album balances Jonny's trademark earthy humor and unfiltered worldview with some of his darkest material to date. Co-producer Goldsmith says, "Funny as they can be at moments, his songs access realities and experiences that we're all familiar with but sometimes fail to consider the depths of."
While immersing himself in the music world, Jonny began running marathons from Philadelphia to Barcelona and pounding out his signature leather works - the dog collars and guitar straps - seen all over Nashville and half the musical universe. He found himself in NYC for year trying to save a relationship, and its slow, painful unraveling (and demise) inspired Dad Country's bleakest, heartrending tracks, including "All We Do Is Complain" and "Have You Ever Wanted to Die."
These days, life has never been better for Jonny Fritz. He's back in Nashville again and putting down roots- and has even gone and bought himself a house. "It just keeps getting better. Now, the band is getting paid, I'm getting paid, everybody's happy, and we're packing 'em in when we play."

Lost On The RiverThe New Basement Tapes, an album project from Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens (Carolina Chocolate Drops) Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Marcus Mumford (Mumford & Sons) and producer T Bone Burnett, recorded in Capitol Studios to create music for two-dozen recently discovered lyrics written by Bob Dylan in 1967 during the period that generated the recording of the legendary Basement Tapes.
The album will be released this year by Electromagnetic Recordings/Harvest Records (Capitol Music Group), and will be accompanied by a Showtime documentary titled, Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes Continued, directed by Sam Jones (the Wilco documentary, I Am Trying To Break Your Heart). The film will present an exclusive and intimate look at the making of Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes set against the important and historical cultural backdrop of Bob Dylan's original Basement Tapes.
Bob Dylan's original Basement Tapes - recorded by Dylan in 1967 with musicians who would later achieve their own fame as The Band - have fascinated and enticed successive generations of musicians, fans and cultural critics for nearly five decades. This collective recorded more than a hundred songs in
the basement of a small house in upstate New York that summer and fall, including dozens of newly-written Bob Dylan future classics such as, "I Shall Be Released," "The Mighty Quinn," "This Wheel's On Fire," "You Ain't Going Nowhere" and "Tears Of Rage."
Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes celebrates the discovery of new Bob Dylan lyrics from that noted 1967 period and marks a unique creative opportunity for Burnett, Costello, Giddens, Goldsmith, James and Mumford, who are bringing them to life nearly 50 years later. For Burnett, whom Dylan
has entrusted with this endeavor, it was imperative to provide an environment in which these artists could thrive. "Great music is best created when a community of artists gets together for the common good. There is a deep well of generosity and support in the room at all times, and that reflects the tremendous generosity shown by Bob in sharing these lyrics with us."1. Down On The Bottom

Nothing Is Wrong (Awaiting Repress)Dawes self-proclaims themselves as an American rock n roll band, which at first blush sounds absurdly vague. Obviously they play rock n roll in America so did Dead Kennedys and arguably Taylor Hicks. But the roots rock country folk that the LA band churned out on their 2009 debut North Hills may just be the new touchstone for a true and specific American rock n roll band. Dawes is back to let freedom ring on their new album Nothing Is Wrong due out June 7th via ATO Records.
We didnt change up our approach too much and yet we were able to create something that I feel has a new identity from our first record, singer/guitarist Taylor Goldsmith says. Its definitely taking a step in a direction and at the same time, its maintaining what it needs to maintain.

Stories Don't EndWhile the city of Los Angeles has been both an inspiration and a home to the four members of Dawes, they found themselves traveling east last fall to record their third album in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina with newly enlisted producer Jacquire King. It was a chance to hunker down and work each day for a month away from familiar landmarks and routines. The tracks they laid down at Asheville's Echo Mountain Studio have yielded a 12-song disc of tremendous sonic and narrative clarity, book-ended in classic album fashion by two very different versions of the wistful "Just Beneath The Surface" - a misleading title, really, since the songs stacked in between dig so deep. Stories Don't End is not so much a departure from the quartet's previous efforts as a distillation of them. It spotlights the group's maturing skills as arrangers, performers and interpreters who shape the raw material supplied by chief songwriter and lead vocalist Taylor Goldsmith into an artfully concise and increasingly soulful sound.1. Transparent Red And Transparent Green Vinyl
UNSEEN FORCES is proud to present the complete motion picture soundtrack from Fede Alvarez's incendiary 2013 reimagining of cult horror masterpiece the EVIL DEAD. Spanish composer Roque Baños dazzles with a crisp modern orchestral score that bows reverently toward such genre classics as Jerry Goldsmith's The Omen Suite, Anton Webern and Krzysztof Penderecki's creepy string movements from The Exorcist and Joseph LoDuca's beautifully understated atmospherics for Sam Raimi's original creation that launched the grisly Kandarian franchise and revolutionized the contemporary horror film with its startling velocity.
Anxious purists need not fret. Baños studied music at the Upper Music Conservatory of Murcia and Madrid's Real Conservatorio Superior before graduating from Boston's prestigious Berklee College of Music, but with EVIL DEAD he steps beyond the jazz influences evidenced in his previous scores. Here the maestro eloquently assumes the role of firestarter, conducting like a pyromaniac invoking the destructive majesty of flame - both demonic and cleansing - with smoldering strings and brass building toward total aural incineration. To that end, he cleverly employs a prominent siren motif that at turns suggests a dreadful fire alarm in slow motion, the nostalgia of an amusement park haunted house attraction and a prodigious yawning door somewhere in the deepest chasm of hell. A thoroughly cinematic experience suffused with sweeping overtures and jarring choral crescendos, Baños has created a dark and vital epic for the ages. DLP pressed to 140 gram gore splattered vinyl - with a locked groove for extended terror! - and entombed in a lavish gatefold cover, this gorgeous collection carves through the glut of overblown soundtrack reissues of late like a trusty chainsaw. FanfareJonathan Wilson returns in 2013 with Fanfare, an epic, grandiose and highly ambitious production that builds upon the success of his Bella Union debut.
With 2011's critically-lauded Gentle Spirit, audiences worldwide were introduced to the prodigious talents of singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer and unrivalled guitar hero Jonathan Wilson. Gentle Spirit's authentic exploration and modern updating of the Laurel Canyon sound earned it high marks on many year-end lists, including those of MOJO (#4), Uncut (#16) and The Guardian (#28). The eagerly-awaited follow-up, Fanfare, is an even more ambitious production that instantly conjures thoughts of Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue.
'Fanfare as a word represents a fanciful showing, a bodacious movement of energy, a celebration of sound, Wilson explains. Something to signify an arrival, a special occasion. In this case, it's also the immense opening song that builds into a multilayered cinematic poem from the artist to channel the perfect love song through his piano. As a declaration of intent, it's a powerful statement.
From the initial idea of the record, I knew I wanted a concert Steinway piano to be the centerpiece--the beating heart--of Fanfare. I was going for this sort of widescreen sound. I wanted strings, horns, vibes, voices, solos, improvisation and a full orchestra on some of the tunes. Having that 9-foot Steinway was central to achieving the sound that I wanted.
Fanfare was made in Los Angeles over a 9-month period. Featuring vocal and instrumental contributions from heavy friends like Graham Nash, David Crosby, Jackson Browne, Josh Tillman (aka Father John Misty), Wilco's Patrick Sansone, Dawes' Taylor Goldsmith and Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench from Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, the album is a celebration of friends and family. Additionally, Wilson and British folk legend Roy Harper co-wrote several songs on the record.
Sometimes Wilson seems to need a pinch to believe his good fortune: There are an awful lot of wizards on this album. Wizards of all ages and life experiences. All these amazing voices and musicians. There is a high degree of musical prowess and pedigree here. Cross-generational musical sharing and passing down traditions is very important to me and something that must continue. This is the way you keep the Fanfare's blowing, this is how you keep the energies interacting.

On the group's sixth album, Passwords, inspiration pulls guitarist/singer
Taylor Goldsmith, drummer Griffin Goldsmith, bassist Wylie
Gelber, and keyboardist Lee Pardini into their most universal, topical
territory to date. This is a record about the modern world: the relationships
that fill it, the politics that divide it, the small victories and big
losses that give it shape. Taylor's writing is personal at points - the
result of his recent engagement, which lends a sense of gravity and
self-reflection to album highlights like Time Flies Either Way and I
Can't Love - but it also zooms out, focusing not on the director
himself, but on everything within the lens.

In 1997, Sub Pop approached Sunny Day's members for help in compiling
a rarities album. Because there were so few usable tracks, band
founders Jeremy Enigk and Dan Hoerner agreed to get together and write

Tomorrow Is My TurnRhiannon Giddens, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and founding member of Grammy Award-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, makes her solo recording debut with Tomorrow Is My Turn, due out on Nonesuch Records. (The vinyl will follow on March 3.) The album was produced by T Bone Burnett.
Burnett first worked with Giddens when she performed last fall at a concert he curated at New York City's Town Hall that was later broadcast on Showtime: Another Day, Another Time: Celebrating the Music of "Inside Llewyn Davis." Backstage, Burnett was immediately moved to ask if he could produce a record with her. "It was clear the first time I heard her at rehearsal that Rhiannon is next in a long line of singers that include Marian Anderson, Odetta, Mahalia Jackson, Rosetta Tharpe," Burnett says. "We need that person in our culture."
For her first solo disc, Giddens chose a broad range of songs from genres as diverse as gospel, jazz, blues, and country. In addition to the traditional "Black Is the Color," tracks include Hank Cochran's "She's Got You," made famous by Patsy Cline; Dolly Parton's "Don't Let It Trouble Your Mind"; "O Love Is Teasin'," popularized by the Kentucky-reared "mother of folk" Jean Ritchie; and Elizabeth Cotton's "Shake Sugaree."
"I had already started putting together a list of songs that didn't really fit into the Chocolate Drops world," Giddens explains. "At the top was 'Tomorrow Is My Turn' [immortalized by Nina Simone]. Seeing Nina do it on YouTube was revelatory. I knew she'd gone through a lot of hard times, as so many people did in that time period. Watching her sing this song, with the words 'tomorrow is my turn,' I began to think about the struggle of her and women like her." The significance of this song led Giddens to make it the title of the album as well. "Other songs started getting on my list and they were all by women or interpreted by women," she says.
Tomorrow Is My Turn was recorded in Los Angeles and Nashville, with a multi-generational group of players whom Burnett assembled. Among them are fiddle player Gabe Witcher and double bassist Paul Kowert of label-mates Punch Brothers; percussionist Jack Ashford of Motown's renowned Funk Brothers; drummer Jay Bellerose; guitarist Colin Linden; legendary backup singer Tata Vega; veteran Nashville session bassist Dennis Crouch; and Giddens' Drops touring band-mates, multi-instrumentalist Hubby Jenkins and beat-boxer Adam Matta.
Tomorrow Is My Turn follows Giddens' work with Elvis Costello, Taylor Goldsmith, Jim James, and Marcus Mumford on Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes, an album also produced by Burnett that was released in November 2014. Her contribution was hailed by Rolling Stone magazine as the "showstopper evoking antebellum blues with a magnificent voice that interrogates the myths stirred up at Big Pink." The New York Times agreed, saying "On lead vocals she's the album's revelation, singing melodies that hark back to Celtic modes with a decisive presence and a haunting grace."1. Last Kind Words

Sun Midnight Sun (Out Of Stock)Sun Midnight Sun is the second solo album from acclaimed singer, songwriter, and fiddle player Sara Watkins. Produced by guitarist, singer, and songwriter Blake Mills, co-founder of the band Simon Dawes, the album features special guest appearances by Fiona Apple, Jackson Browne, Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), Benmont Tench, and Sean Watkins.
In the three years since her last release, Watkins has been busy touring the world as guest fiddle player and vocalist with the Decemberists and joining Garrison Keillor on his nationwide Summer Love performance tours, as well as acting as his first and only guest host for A Prairie Home Companion broadcasts.
Sun Midnight Sun was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Shawn Everett at Zeitgeist Studio, Los Angeles, and includes songs written by Watkins ("You and Me," "Take Up Your Spade") as well as several collaborations with Mills ("The Foothills," "Be There," "The Accord," "Impossible," and "Lock and Key"). It also features songs by Dan Wilson ("When It Pleases You") and Willie Nelson ("I'm a Memory"), and a rendition of The Everly Brothers classic "You're the One I Love," on which Fiona Apple duets with Watkins.
Watkins first gained recognition as a founding member of the Grammy Award-winning, platinum-selling trio Nickel Creek. When not on the road or in the studio, Watkins has guest-starred as fiddler and/or harmony vocalist on albums by BÉla Fleck, the Chieftains, Ray LaMontagne, Ben Lee, Dan Wilson, Richard Thompson, and Alex Woodward, among others. Additionally, Watkins and her brother Sean continue an informal residency called the Watkins Family Hour at the L.A. club Largo, which often includes surprise cameos from friends and colleagues.1.
