Standing In The Way Of ControlThe first thing that strikes you is the rhythm. The Gossip have been making punks dance since they debuted 5 years ago, long before dance punk existed. Soulful and jagged, you can hear everything from Dischord to Motown in Brace's playing. Now, with the addition of new drummer Hannah Blilie (Shoplifting, ex-Chromatics) they have a new thundering beat for the kids to dance to on the corners and in the clubs.
The next thing that smacks you is Beth's voice, all the guttural blues of the South is in that inimitable instrument. It resonates with the confidence that is in her lyrics asking people to hold on just a little bit longer, re-assuring the youth that there are others out there, and spitting in the face of all who say otherwise!
Standing in the Way of Control, their third album, was recorded by Guy Picciotto (Fugazi) at Seattle's Bear Creek. From heartbreakers like ''Coal to Diamonds'' to the anthemic title track, released as a single with a Le Tigre remix, the band is unafraid to put it all out there and take their audience to new places. This is the sound of a band destroying and surpassing all expectations placed on them.01 Fire With Fire

GossipSleeping With Sirens have announced the details of their new album, Gossip.
Of the album, Quinn says, We finally captured the live experience with [producer David] Bendeth. We have the production, but there's a rawness that comes through. Musically, I feel like it's the first Sirens record that sounds specifically like us. We took chances, experimented, and continued to do what we do best: create art. It's something new. It has an authentic sound that we've been working towards all this time.

MovementRecorded live in concert on July 9, 2007, Gossip - Live In Liverpool brilliantly captures and brings into focus the stunning ferocity, energy and intensity at the heart of the band's groundbreaking meld of sound and politics. This incendiary concert showcase breaks out definitive performances of Gossip's signature tunes including the band's UK #1 Indie chart-topping smash, Standing In The Way Of Control; the UK Top 40 hit, Listen Up; and the #3 UK Indie track, Jealous Girls in addition to delightfully provocative covers of Wham!'s Careless Whisper and Aaliyah's Are You That Somebody?
Gossip - Live In Liverpool includes a DVD-V of the concert, lensed by documentary filmmaker and music video director Lance Bangs (Sonic Youth, Green Day, R.E.M., Death Cab For Cutie, Kanye West, Pavement, Mike Watt and more). Also includes a limited edition 18 x 24 poster.
Gossip released its first full-length collection of songs, That's Not What I Heard, in January of 2001 and its successor, Arkansas Heat, in 2002 after touring with the White Stripes and Sleater-Kinney. Gossip reached a threshold of transcendence with its last studio collection, 2006's Standing In The Way Of Control, which shot to #1 on the UK indie albums chart. The album's title track became a UK hit in its own right after becoming the unofficial theme music for the popular British television teen drama, Skins. Standing In The Way Of Control charted on Billboard's European Top 100 Albums and European Hot 100 Singles charts. The single has sold more than 150,000 copies in the UK.1 Nite

God Willin' And The Creek Don't RiseGod Willin' And The Creek Don't Rise is Ray Lamontagne's fourth studio record, and follow-up to the heralded Gossip in the Grain. Entirely self produced (for the first time), the album was recorded in two weeks at the homemade recording studio in LaMontagnes newly restored historic home in the woods of western Massachusetts. With Rays vocals at the forefront of the songs and a loose, almost live sounding recording, the album stands as a testament to a band at the height of their powers. The newly coined Pariah Dogs consist of Jay Bellarose (drums), Jennifer Condos (bass), Patrick Warren (keyboard), Eric Heywood (guitar) and Greg Leisz (pedal steel guitar). Individually, these musicians have contributed to the live work of such heralded musicians as Beck, Joe Henry, Tom Waits, Lucinda Williams, Ryan Adams and Joe Cocker to name a few.1. Repo Man

Generals: RemixedFour Tracks From 2012's GENERALS Remixed By Dntel (Jimmy Tamborello of The Postal Service), Richard Swift, Clark Baechle Of The Faint, And Field Days
Blue Vinyl 12", Limited To 1000 Copies!
Following 2010's critically acclaimed debut What We Lose in the Fire We Gain in the Flood and a year on the road touring as part of Bright Eyes, singer-songwriter Laura Burhenn teamed up with producer Richard Swift (The Shins, Richard Swift) again and emerged with GENERALS, a sophomore album fully armed. In place of the Zen meditations found
on The Mynabirds' first album, GENERALS is filled with armies of stomps and claps, sweeping full spectrum orchestrations, and moments that range from intensely personal pleas to shout-out-loud protests with teeth.
GENERALS picked up high praise from The Huffington Post, USA Today, Pitchfork, BuzzFeed, Paste, and many others. Songs from the album were featured on Rock Center, Gossip Girl, and Grey's Anatomy, while NPR Music counted "Generals" among their Top Songs of 2012.1. Generals (Richard Swift Remix)

Under Construction (Pre-Order)Attention B-girls and boys: Missy Elliott is officially over it. Like her homegirl Mary J. Blige, the rap diva declares, no more drama. Time to get back to the essence. To that end, Under Construction bubbles over with a combination of ridiculously slamming beats and clever old-school references--not to mention a slew of guest stars. Based on the rhyme schematic from UTFO's Roxanne Roxanne and featuring Ms. Jade's tight-laced drawl, Funky Fresh Dressed draws on several classics, including the Beasties' Paul Revere. Missy croons and Jay-Z namedrops his way through the loose-limbed Back in the Day. Ludacris injects some new jack Southern flavor into the sinuous anti-hater's anthem, Gossip Folks. Work It features a catchy chorus and an absolutely insane Timbaland track.
As is to be expected, Aaliyah's presence looms large over the proceedings, especially on the classic Misdemeanor-style hip-hop and R&B hybrid, Nothing out There for Me. Missy's rap adlibs play second fiddle to the song's lush vocals, as BeyoncÉ fills the diva role previously occupied by the late, great Aaliyah. -Rebecca Levine1. Intro

CellsFour years and four EPs on, Keating is still something of an enigma. He doesn't prey on fame, he does very few interviews and he isn't part of a DJ crew: he has always preferred to let his music speak for itself. He's been in no hurry to release a record either - until now, that is. Keating has found a home on Different Recordings, which counts club crusaders like Tiga, Felix Da Housecat and Vitalic among its roster, and is finally ready to present his mission statement: Cells.
An album is such a personal manifesto, he says, of why he has waited until now to release Cells, and, in some ways, I didn't feel as if I'd earned that. I hadn't got their full attention yet. He should, however, give himself more credit. Since Mars, Keating has released another chart-nudging single, I Think I Like It, remixed with everyone from Hot Chip and Gossip to Calvin Harris and Sway, produced three memorable mixes for Radio 1 and appeared on huge party bills with the biggest names in dance music. He has also started a label, Blood Music, and has hosted its showcases at Social Club in Paris and London's Fabric. And he has just dropped a new EP, Yes/No, to ready fans for his debut long-player. The world, as it happens, is bloodthirstily waiting: Cells is one of the most anticipated dance albums of 2012.
It's a daring one at that. Cells is an 11-track distillation of Keating's surreal vision, an electronic masterpiece skewered by his love of the macabre, the uncanny and the sinister. He has trapped his signature breed of savage, Godzilla-strength basslines and laser-blazing four-to-the-floor inside his very own suspense thriller.1. Yes / No

The Okeh Sessions (Pure Pleasure)Her mountainous stature matching the sheer soulful power of her massive vocal talent, Big Maybelle was one of the premier R&B chanteuses of the '50s. Her deep, gravelly voice was as singular as her recorded output for Okeh and Savoy, which ranged from down-in-the-alley blues to pop-slanted ballads. She appeared at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1958, and acquired a large following among lovers of the blues, rhythm and blues, jazz and rock and roll. Near the end of her life she even covered hits by the Beatles and Donovan. Big Maybelle's career was hampered throughout and cut short by a severe drug addiction, but she packed a lot of living into her shortened lifespan. It's worth mentioning how, almost half a century later, the power in her Okeh sessions is still palpable. With her bold, gritty sound, she comes off like nothing so much as a female Howlin' Wolf, and one can't imagine her not being an influence on the full-throttle blues of Etta James, Aretha, Janis Joplin and countless others. So Good to My Baby features typically microphone-distorting belting from the singer, and an appropriately blazing horn section. Gabbin' Blues, her 1952 Okeh debut smash, is a humorous dialogue between Maybelle and gossiping rival Rose Marie McCoy, the tune's co-writer. One of the most stirring cuts here is Ocean Of Tears, a percolating, minor-key tune in which Maybelle bemoans her sorrowful state with an unforgettably cathartic angst. Also impressive, though, are ballads such as You'll Never Know, Ain't No Use, and You'll Be Sorry, which show a pleasant, softer side to Maybelle's craft. Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On - a song that she took to the top of the R&B charts before Jerry Lee Lewis turned it into a rock & roll anthem -, her 1955 single One Monkey Don't Stop No Show and 1954's I'm Getting 'Long Alright, are also standouts. New York session wizards such as tenor saxophonist Sam 'The Man' Taylor and guitarist Mickey Baker provide great support throughout. The tracks contained on this album showcase one of the greatest blues singers of all time, at her prime.
Recording: October 1952, June 1953, January and March 1954, March 1955
About Pure Pleasure
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.LP1

OlympiaOlympia is an album of transformation. Though it has only been two years since Austra's 2010 debut
Feel It Break, it presents a quantum evolution in the Toronto-based band's sound, structure and style.
After three years of non-stop international touring with the likes of The xx, Grimes and the Gossip,
when it came time to record Olympia, Austra had evolved into a complex collaborative effort between
its six members. "Previously, I would flesh out songs before I brought them to the band, but this time
I left them bare and let the others fill them in" explains Katie Stelmanis, the principal songwriter/vocalist.
Olympia is also the first confessional record for Stelmanis as evidenced by the heartfelt lyrics of piano
driven lead single "Home." The album touches on a range of sentiments that stem from a relationship
ending, a relationship beginning, and friends' struggles with addiction and motivation. Despite the
sometimes dark lyrics written in collaboration with band member Sari Lightman, Olympia is bubbly
and buoyant- fundamentally a dance record, which Stelmanis says was the band's aim all along. "We
are really into dense harmonies and big beautiful melodies, but I also love techno and dance music. I
wanted to bring those elements together."
Though Olympia is filled with electronic and synthetic sounds that reference everything from Trax
Record classic cuts to Yazoo's Upstairs At Eric's, it's free of programming and loops. Everything was
played live by the band in the studio and all of the percussion including a wild set up of marimbas and
congas performed by drummer Maya Postepski. "There is a major percussive element running through
every song," Stelmanis laughs, "this is the album where we discovered rhythm."
The album was produced by Austra with additional production by Mike Haliechuk (Fucked Up)

Cost of LivingIncludes Poster
The United States' myriad inequalities, hatreds and phobias are painfully evident in 2017, offering proof that the age-old dichotomy of political bands versus apolitical bands simply doesn't exist. Either you are comfortable and unfazed by the current reigning power structures, or you use your music as a vehicle for the dismantling of oppression and the creation of something better. No matter what your songs are about, you are choosing a side.
The position of Providence, RI's Downtown Boys has been clear since they started storming through basements and DIY spaces with their radically-minded rock music: they are here to topple the white-cis-het hegemony and draft a new history. Downtown Boys began by combining revolutionary ideals with boundless energy and contagious, inclusive fun, and their resolve has only strengthened as their sound and audience have grown.
Cost of Living is their third full-length, following a self-released 2012 debut and 2015's Full Communism on Don Giovanni Records. They recorded it with Guy Picciotto (Fugazi; producer of Blonde Redhead, The Gossip), one of indie-rock's most mythological figures, in the producer's chair. Picciotto fostered the band's improvisational urges while pulling the root of their music to the forefront: unflinching choruses, fearlessly confrontational vocals, and the sense that each song will incite the room into action, sending bodies into motion that were previously thought to have atrophied.
Downtown Boys are keenly aware of the increased visibility and credibility that comes with signing to a corporate-media conglomerate such as Sub Pop. They're using this platform as a megaphone for their protest music, amplifying and centering Chicana, queer, and Latino voices in the far-too-whitewashed world of rock. In just one example, album-opener A Wall rides the feel-good power that drove so many tunes by The Clash and Wire as it calls out the idea that a wall could ever succeed in snuffing the humanity and spirit of those it's designed to crush.
Compared to previous efforts, Downtown Boys have shifted from a once-meaty brass section to the subtler melodic accompaniment of keyboards and a saxophone, coloring their anthems with warm, bright tones while singer/lyricist Victoria Ruiz spits out her frustrations and passions. Some might say it shows a sense of maturity, as Downtown Boys have undoubtedly smoothed down some of their earlier edges, but there is no compromise to their righteous assault and captivating presence. Like the socially conscious groups of years past, from Public Enemy to Rage Against the Machine, Downtown Boys harness powerful sloganeering, repetitive grooves, and earworm hooks to create one of the most necessary musical statements of the day. We should all do well to take notice!
