    Limited To 500 Copies

Shortly before the release of Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde (1969), The Byrds performed at the Boston Tea Party, a music venue in the heart of Boston renowned for performances by The Grateful Dead, The Velvet Underground, and The Byrds themselves. The performance, now available on this deluxe LP release, is from an FM broadcast recorded at the club on February 22nd, 1969. Available here for the first time on vinyl, the set includes a brace of cuts from the new album alongside 4 from its follow-up, The Ballad Of Easy Rider. Elsewhere we find strong covers of The Band's 'Long Black Veil' and 'This Wheel's On Fire,' Bob Dylan's 'Lay Lady Lay,' and a great selection of oldies - although not the obvious choices.

The Best of the Grateful Dead Live: 1969-1977 - Vol 1

The live albums the band released during its 30-year career are the primary source for the collection, with some performances selected from the growing number of live releases that have emerged since 1995. Vol. 1 covers 1969-1977 with fan-favorite tracks such as "Bertha" from the 1971 Skull & Roses, and "Truckin'" and a searing rendition of "Morning Dew," from the revered double-album Europe '72.

"We wanted to follow up the 2015 The Best Of The Grateful Dead studio set with a live counterpart, and have focused our efforts on the band's primary live albums as well as some key tracks from archival concert releases," says band archivist and producer David Lemieux. "Just as there was nothing like a Grateful Dead concert, there is also nothing like a live Grateful Dead recording; it's no secret that as good as the Dead's studio recordings were, they excelled in front of an audience, and this set provides an overview of just how great the Dead were live in concert."

    Iron Butterfly Live

First Time 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Release

Mastered Impeccably By Joe Reagoso At Friday Music And Capitol Mastering, Hollywood, CA

Features The 1970 Concert Classic 19 Minute Version Of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida

Iron Butterfly is truly an amazing success story in the record business. For over forty years, this band remained a significant force in the classic rock world with their original mix of rock, metal and classic leanings, solidifying them as one of the true purveyors of the progressive rock movement. Founded by the multi-talented keyboardist/vocalist Doug Ingle in San Diego in 1966, the band hit the charts immediately and soon became one of the key favorite biker bands and west coast hard rockers alongside entities like Steppenwolf, Grateful Dead and The Doors.

Their live performances were challenging, loud, exciting and definitely original, which brought them huge popularity in a very short period of time. 1968 changed everything as In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida became a massive smash garnering Iron Butterfly major success globally. This tune displayed the first example of a driving hard rock jam and lyric, with classical, organic and tribal rhythms, making it one of the most important songs of our time. Featuring Doug Ingle's keyboard and vocal expertise, Lee Dorman's power bass, guitar shredder Erik Brann, and Ron Bushy's primitive drum beat, this amazing stage shows will forever be associated with the acid rock era, which paved the way for heavy metal bands into the seventies and beyond.

ATCO Records knew the power of their live performances, therefore the quartet was awarded with another smash Lp, the concert recording masterwork chart topper Iron Butterfly Live. The 1970 smash contained 6 smokin' selections from their first three hit albums. Hard rock is abounding like the 19 minute workout on In-A Gadda-Da-Vida and other killer jams like Soul Experience, Are You Happy and Filled With Fear.

This masterpiece has been out of print on vinyl for many decades that is until now! Friday Music is very proud to offer another installment in our Iron Butterfly 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series with their classic 1970 smash album Iron Butterfly Live .

Impeccably mastered from the original Atco tapes by Joe Reagoso (Grateful Dead/Yes/Deep Purple) at Friday Music Studios, this limited edition 180 Gram LP is also presented in the original album cover layout, featuring the original photos and artwork elements not seen in years.

We believe this is the definitive sounding version of this monumental recording and will be one of the more anticipated audiophile releases of 2016. Iron Butterfly Live Their greatest hits in concert First Time 180 Gram Vinyl From your friends at Friday Music In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida !!!

    Cornell 5/8/77

The Grateful Dead played more than 2,000 concerts, but none continues to spark interest and provoke discussion quite like the band's performance at Cornell University's Barton Hall on May 8, 1977. It is one of the most collected, traded, and debated concerts by any band ever, has topped numerous fan polls through the years, and was a favorite of the group's longtime archivist Dick Latvala, who stated: "Enough can't be said about this superb show." Even Uncle Sam got into the act in 2011 when the recording was "deemed so important to the history and culture of the United States" that a copy was added to the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry.

Cornell 5/8/77 was recorded live directly from the soundboards by Betty Cantor-Jackson. After several years the master tapes were seemingly lost for good, but that all changed at the end of 2016. The lost tapes, or lost "Betty boards" as they are commonly known, finally made their way back home to the Grateful Dead vault.

    Fillmore East 2-11-69

Live at the Fillmore East 2-11-69 is a double live album by the Grateful Dead recorded during the Live/Dead tour on February 11, 1969 at the Fillmore East in New York City.

Performing two hour-long sets as the opening act to Janis Joplin's New York debut as a solo star, the Grateful Dead turned in a characteristic performance for this period in their career. In between the release of their second and third albums, they devoted much time to the songs that would turn up several months later on Aoxomoxoa, including acoustic renditions of Dupree's Diamond Blues and Mountains of the Moon. Pigpen dominated the first set, singing the blues standards Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, I'm a King Bee, and Turn on Your Lovelight. But a large part of both sets was given over to the group's extended medleys, in the first set Cryptical Envelopment/The Other One, in the second Dark Star/St. Stephen/The Eleven. These involved, largely instrumental pieces set the tone for the Dead at the end of the '60s and produced their breakthrough with Live/Dead, which was recorded within weeks of this show. There is also a game version of Hey Jude, the biggest hit of the previous year, to end the first set, and an unlisted, interrupted performance of Cosmic Charlie as a second-set encore.

Exclusive Only To This LP Release: First Time Sitting Photos Of The Dead By The Legendary Herb Greene

Impeccably Mastered By Joe Reagoso At Friday Music Studios And Capitol Records, Hollywood, CA With Ron McMaster

The legendary Bay area rock superstars the Grateful Dead scored for over four decades a plethora of wonderful recordings throughout their incredible career. Spearheaded originally by the late great Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kruetzmann and the late Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, these five gentlemen set the world on fire with their magnificent artistry and musicianship unparalleled to this day.

With their very first San Francisco live gigs and when they were locally known as The Warlocks, the historical importance of these debut concert recordings would soon become a blueprint for the music world as the Grateful Dead would become one of the biggest concert attractions of all time.

Over a decade ago, the Grateful Dead unearthed 14 super rare live recordings from the mid-sixties. None of these recordings were ever previously released at the time. Recorded in San Francisco from a July 1966 performance, when they were signed to the Scorpio Records label, this ultra rare concert tape simply became manna for the fans and was truly a find for any collector of fine rock and roll and
early psych and garage rock fare.

Dead fan favorite Viola Lee Blues kicks off the rare collection, and then the fireworks light up as future Grateful Dead classics like Don't Ease Me In and the stellar Jimmy Reed classic Big Boss Man truly become a very important and interesting listen to any fan of the Dead or classic rock in general.
Known for their jams in concert, you will get to hear stellar takes on rare blues tracks like One Kind Favor, Next Time You See Me and
of course their super rare Bob Dylan interpretation of It's All Over Now Baby Blue, which would be an interesting choice not knowing there
would be future collaborations with Dylan in both of their important later careers.

Even superlative covers of Otis Redding's Pain In My Heart and the Slim Harpo blues champion I'm A King Bee are included in this amazingly important and historic rock release from this much loved band.
These Grateful Dead recordings have never been released on the vinyl format that is until now
Friday Music is very pleased to announce for the very first time on 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl - The Grateful Dead's Birth Of The Dead Volume Two-The Live Sides. This deluxe 2 LP set not only has the original 14 live performances unearthed by the Dead themselves, but it also includes for the very first time anywhere several unearthed photos from the lens of the legendary Herb Greene. These first time issued photos show the very first sittings of the Grateful Dead and will make your listening hours that much more enjoyable as you stare at the
brilliant pictures of your favorite rockers in this very special era.

As a further installment in the exclusive and authorized Grateful Dead Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series, this fine album
is part of a historical two part audiophile vinyl series along with the Birth Of The Dead Volume One-The Studio Sessions which was released
    in late 2013.

    Workingman's Dead (Awaiting Repress)

Sublime, Stripped-Down 1970 Americana Classic Steeped in Country, Blues, and Folk

You've Never Heard This Roots-Based Marvel Sound Better: Mastered from the Original Master Tapes and Given Extra-Wide Grooves on 45RPM LP

Ranked #264 on Rolling Stone's List of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time: Airy Harmonies, Simple Structures, Concise Arrangements, and Burnished Tones Anchor Songs

Workingman's Dead defies the erroneous belief that the Grateful Dead never attained brilliance in the recording studio. Forever prized for natural sonics, Workingman's Dead attains audiophile reference status courtesy of this first-ever 45RPM version. As flawless as any rustic album ever released, the 1970 set now brims with soaring harmonies, organic execution, intertwined textures, and uncomplicated structures that furnish the songs a transcendence associated with timeless American music. Colorful, relatable characters seemingly torn from working-class histories and old-time fables inhabit the narratives.

Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed on 180g LPs at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's numbered limited edition of this period-defining recording renders the stripped-down fare with immense detail, rich airiness, and reach-out-and-touch-it realism. Longtime Deadheads and newcomers alike will hear significantly more information, experience wider and deeper soundstages, and become swept away by incredible tonal and vocal balances-traits made possible by the format's wider grooves. Instrumental melds and refined accents, such as guest David Nelson's nimble fills on "Cumberland Blues," are part of a larger whole that gives the impression you are witness to the world's coziest campfire session. Frontier tales and refined performances further this feeling.

The first Grateful Dead album to eschew cosmic jams and complex signatures, Workingman's Dead stakes its existence to great songs, homespun warmth, and bare essentials. Its wistful, relaxed state-immediately apparent via the innocent album-opening invitation "Will you come with me?" on "Uncle John's Band"-owes to the circumstances and conditions surrounding its creation. At the time, the Dead owed a considerable financial debt to Warner Bros. and were hobbled by a recent drug bust and financial scandal. Most significantly, the band was recovering from-and reacting to-the tragic events of the Altamont Music Festival and symbolic end of the peace and love era.

As such, Workingman's Dead acts as a retreat from chaos and uncertainty, its songs emblems of simpler times and pleas for compassion in the face of hardship. Lyricist Robert Hunter said he aimed to capture the vintage elements of late 1940s country-and-western jukebox singles as well as old blues classics. In that vein, fare such as the Bakersfield-leaning "Cumberland Blues," pastoral ballad "Dire Wolf," and bluesy "Easy Wind" hit the mark. Leader Jerry Garcia's occasional pedal-steel underpinnings arrive as a bonus.

Of course, aside from the economical concision and thematic consistency, the genius of Workingman's Dead resides in the group's expressive harmonies. Taught by Crosby, Stills and Nash, the Dead produce live "air blends" of multi-part vocal harmonies that provide the foundations of nearly every track. "Uncle John's Band," "High Time," "New Speedway Boogie" (with the iconic refrain "One way or another/This darkness has got to give" referencing the ill wind that greeted the new decade), and the radio favorite "Casey Jones" practically float on the ensemble's communal vocal beds.

Mobile Fidelity's 45RPM edition renders these invigorating, refreshing, and engaging characteristics in three-dimensional sound that transports you to the event. Recordings don't get more lifelike. Workingman's Dead-an iconic, ageless record that drew countless listeners to the band's unique style because of its accessibility and charm-deserves nothing less. Neither do you.

Round Records will release its most ambitious project to date with the long-awaited Jerry Garcia boxed set Before The Dead. The project features a meticulously researched and curated compilation of recordings the iconic Grateful Dead founder made prior to forming the legendary band. Before The Dead includes never before heard performances, recordings that have never been commercially released and a small selection that have. From intimate live recordings to live studio recordings to field recordings, Before The Dead serves as a historical document in the spirit of renowned releases by Smithsonian Folkways and influential field recordings by Alan Lomax. The music on Before The Dead was selected and co-produced by longtime Grateful Dead publicist/author Dennis McNally and documentarian Brian Miksis. The audio was restored and mastered by Fred Kevorkian.

The first release from Before The Dead features the Black Mountain Boys (Garcia, Robert Hunter, David Nelson and Eric Thompson) in a rare 1964 live recording of "Rosa Lee McFall". Written by Charlie Monroe, the song would remain with Garcia throughout his career, reinterpreted later on with The Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band and Garcia/Grisman. This is the first time this track has ever been released.

The 5-LP boxed set is pressed to 180-gram vinyl in a limited edition of 2,500 pieces and includes a special in-depth 32-page book featuring essays by McNally and Miksis, rare photos and memorabilia along with detailed listening notes and commentary on each track by Dr. Neil V. Rosenberg. Aside from being a renowned musicologist, Rosenberg was part of the Redwood Canyon Ramblers, an influential Bay Area bluegrass ensemble that would inspire a younger generation of players, including Garcia. Each section features a "Tales of the Tape" essay that includes details on how, when and where the music was recorded, how it was found and, in most instances, anecdotes about the particular date, including early interactions with many area musicians before they went on to greater things. Sara Ruppenthal Katz (formerly Sara Garcia, Jerry's first wife) contributes an enlightening essay around the 1963 recording of her duo performance with Garcia at the intimate Pala Alto, CA club Top Of The Tangent (aka The Tangent). Tangent co-founder Stu Goldstein also adds a piece discussing the club's origins and how it became a hot spot for the new folk scene that was developing in the Bay Area.

Before The Dead sheds light on the earliest period in Jerry Garcia's odyssey going from the young, charismatic, developing multi-instrumentalist coming of age during the early 1960's folk-revival (often sarcastically referred to as The Great Folk Scare) to one of the most influential and groundbreaking artists of the rock 'n roll era. Like many during that time, Garcia's influences were coming from the deep-rooted folk tradition of artists such as Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, The Carter Family, The New Lost City Ramblers, The Stanley Brothers, The Weavers, a young Joan Baez and the Harry Smith Folkways collections to name a few. These influences would resurface prominently in some of Garcia's most important work with the Dead on the 1970 albums Workingman's Dead and American Beauty - regularly cited as foundational in the creation of what is now referred to as Americana.

From beginning to end, the listener will journey through the musical evolution of Jerry Garcia and how the impact of the folk forbearers gradually permeates his playing and technique. You can hear the earliest origins of Garcia's signature style budding as he had become a student of the music constantly absorbing and endlessly challenging himself. His instrument rarely left his side from dawn to dust. What shines brightly throughout the set is Garcia's outgoing personality and sense of humor, often described as "magnetic", a clear early indicator.

Throughout this period from 1961 to 1964 were pivotal first-time meetings, (documented in the book) between Garcia and people who would become life-long collaborators and friends. From his revered writing partner and early bandmate Robert Hunter, to mandolin master David Grisman, to each member of the Grateful Dead, to the many artists who would go on to take their own place in music history, including acclaimed instrumentalist Sandy Rothman, David Nelson (co-founder of New Riders of the Purple Sage) and Clarence White, guitarist of the Byrds.

Before The Dead showcases Garcia in various ensembles and configurations starting with the rarest piece in the entire collection, the earliest known recording of Garcia captured at his girlfriend's 16th birthday party in 1961 alongside future Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter. Outside of a short clip used in the Grateful Dead documentary Long Strange Trip, this recording has never been released, circulated or heard. Other highlights include the Sleepy Hollow Hog Stompers' 1962 gig in San Carlos, CA, and the Hart Valley Drifters' 1962 recording at Stanford's KZSU Radio Studio A (Garcia's first-known studio recording, released in 2017 for the first time). Arguably Garcia's best and most beloved bluegrass band of that early period, The Black Mountain Boys are prominently featured via three separate occasions in 1963 and 1964, while a 1964 performance by Garcia's Asphalt Jungle Mountain Boys rounds out Before The Dead. See a full list of dates, performances and players below.

Despite Jerry Garcia's deep love for folk and bluegrass traditions, his time fully immersed in it was coming to a close. Encounters with one of his heroes, Bill Monroe, whose band he almost auditioned for (and Rothman went on to join), might have sent him deeper in that direction, but it was not to be. (Note: Garcia even used to tape Monroe's shows, a possible foreshadowing of allowing fans to tape Grateful Dead shows later). By the end of 1964, The Beatles had become a household name, The Rolling Stones hit hard with their version of the blues and civil rights had become an important part of the social and political landscape. New influences and inspirations would impact Garcia's direction as he went on to form The Warlocks, who would go on to become The Grateful Dead. However, the foundation in tradition was solidified during those early years and would resurface regularly throughout the remainder of his life in a multitude of ways, including the Dead, The Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band, Old and In The Way, Garcia/Grisman and so much more.

    Long Live The King

As a fitting bookend to the most successful year of the bands career, The Decemberists will release a new EP entitled Long Live The King. Similar to the critically acclaimed, chart-topping bow The King is Dead, the EP is a mostly-acoustic set of 6 Americana-based songs, recorded around the same time as The King is Dead, and including their stunning cover of the Grateful Dead track Row Jimmy. The EP was produced once again by Tucker Martine.

First Time Limited Edition 2 LP 180 Gram Vinyl Presentation

Exclusive Only To This LP Release: First Time Sitting Photos Of The Dead By The Legendary Herb Greene

Impeccably Mastered By Joe Reagoso At Friday Music Studios And Capitol Records, Hollywood, CA With Ron Mcmaster

The legendary Bay area rock superstars the Grateful Dead scored for over four decades a plethora of wonderful recordings
throughout their incredible career. Spearheaded originally by the late great Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kruetzmann and the late
Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, these five gentlemen set the world on fire with their magnificent artistry and musicianship which is unparaleled to this day.

With their very first San Francisco gigs and studio recordings when they were locally known as The Warlocks, the historical importance of these debut sessions would soon become a blueprint for the music world as the Grateful Dead would become one of the band's
and biggest concert attractions of all time.

Over a decade ago, the Grateful Dead unearthed 17 super rare studio recordings from 1965 through 1967. Aside from an ultra rare
45 on Scorpio Records and a collaborative effort with Jon Hendricks on Verve Records, none of these recordings were ever released.
Ranging from the very first sessions at Autumn Records (Beau Brummels, Sly Stone) and then the Scorpio Records sides, these tracks
simply became manna for the fans and were truly a find for any collector of fine rock and roll and early psych and garage rock fare.

Gordon Lightfoot's Early Morning Rain kicks off the collection, and then the fireworks light up as future Dead classics like I Know
You Rider, Don't Ease Me In and Cold Rain and Snow truly become a very important and interesting listen to any fan of the Dead or
    classic rock in general.

Known for their jams in concert and in the studio setting, you will get to hear stellar takes on rare tracks like Tastebud, The Only
Time Is Now, and of course the super rare Jon Hendricks (Lambert, Hendricks & Ross) protest rocker Fire in the City.

These amazing Dead recordings have never been released on the vinyl format that is until now

Friday Music is very pleased to announce for the very first time on 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl - The Grateful Dead's Birth Of The
Dead Volume One-The Studio Sessions. This deluxe 2 LP set not only has the original 17 studio sessions unearthed by the Dead themselves, but it also includes for the very first time anywhere, several unearthed photos from the lens of the legendary Herb Greene. These
first time issued photos show the very first sittings of the Grateful Dead and will make your listening hours that much more enjoyable as
you stare at the brilliant pictures of your favorite rockers in this very special era.

As a further installment in the exclusive and authorized Grateful Dead Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series, this fine
album is part of a historical two part audiophile vinyl series along with the Birth Of The Dead Volume Two-The Live Sides which will be
    released in early 2014.

Mastered impeccably for vinyl by Joe Reagoso (Grateful Dead) at Friday Music Studios and at Capitol Records, Hollywood, CA, this
limited edition audiophile version of Birth Of The Dead Volume One-The Studio Sessions will truly be a welcome addition to your Dead

    Live & Louder

    Pressed On 2x 180-Gram Vinyl

    Includes Bonus CD

'Live & Louder,' The Dead Daisies' highly-anticipated live outing, is set for release on Spitfire Music / SPV and perfectly captures the awesome vibe of their supreme, sweat-drenched, roof-raising live sets, recorded on a heady high at the end of an unbelievable 2016.

Not to turn down a good opportunity, the band recorded a number of shows on their UK / European Tour with the same team that made 'Make Some Noise' blow speakers worldwide. The album was mixed by Anthony Focx (Aerosmith, Bad Company, Metallica, Santana) at Focxhole Studios and mastered by Howie Weinberg.

They assembled a true monster in the vein of the great live albums of the 70s. You can feel the sweat drip from the ceilings and the energy of the crowd becoming one with the band, as they scream, holler and forget about our often mundane reality for a night of true Rock'n'Roll.

Warts 'n all, 'LIVE & LOUDER' is a document of a band in their prime; a raw slice of visceral energy, an in-your-face assault on the senses. Simply: THE DEAD DAISIES in their element and at their best!

    Live At The Carousel Ballroom

    Import

Big Brother & The Holding Company might best be known for being the first band Janis Joplin sung in, a live recording like this one shows their prowess as a fivepiece band.

Their June 23, 1968 show at the Carousel Ballroom would prove to be legendary on a number of levels. The venue was owned by members of Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead and would later become the Fillmore West. Janis would leave the band only two months after the show to pursue her solo career, making this one of the last times the ensemble worked together. The show was recorded by Augustus Owsley Stanley III , a.k.a. 'Bear', soundman of The Grateful Dead and a masterful LSDcooker, who also supervised the remastering of the recordings shortly before his death in March 2011.

This is to be the first in a series of releases from his archive titled 'Bear's Sonic Archive', and it promises to be one hell of a ride. Though some of these songs have appeared on a 1972 Janis Joplin collection before in a very raw form, this is the first time these recordings are being released on vinyl.

Dedicated to Bear, this live performance is a more than welcome addition to the Big Brother catalogue!

Widespread Panic: Live From Austin, Texas

If you're among the legions of
Widespread Panic fans, you already know
that the band is legendary for never playing the same show twice -
or the same song the same way twice. What makes this performance
that much more special is the inspiring presence of founding member
Michael Houser (whose nickname "Panic" inspired the band's name),
who died of pancreatic cancer less than two years later. As much
as anything, this is a celebration of Houser's life and the sheer joy
he brought to a band that became one of the biggest draws on the
international concert circuit and created a vibe that makes the Panic
experience unique in the pop rock world.

But anybody who knows anything about them knows that
Widespread Panic is so much more than just a jam-happy rock band.
From the time Houser and John Bell ("JB") began playing duets around
Athens, Georgia, in the early 80's, their repertoire ranged from early
covers of the Grateful Dead and Bob Marley to a host of original songs
(among them "Space Wrangler", included here) that demonstrate, as
The Village Voice wrote, "a willingness to dip their collective toe into
just about any genre." This is classic Widespread Panic, including David
Schools on bass, John Hermann on keys, Todd Nance on drums and
    Domingo Ortiz on percussion.

One look at this show and it'll quickly become obvious there
was something strange going on in the house that night. Yes, it was
Halloween, 2000, and the rabid fans went beyond even their usual
hard-core delirium. This was one time the audience almost threatened
    to steal the show!

Live At The Carousel Ballroom 1968

Starting in 1966, Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the
Holding Company became accidental architects of what
would be known as the San Francisco Sound. During that
important cultural watershed quaintly referred to as the
Summer of Love, they provided an unruly, party-tastic link
between the cool, cerebral music of the Jefferson Airplane
and the psychedelic covenant of the Grateful Dead.

LIVE AT THE CAROUSEL BALLROOM 1968 is a previously
unavailable live concert recording of Big Brother and
the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin, recorded
by legendary soundman Owsley Stanley, a/k/a Bear,
who supervised the mastering of this release before his
fatal car accident on March 12, 2011. The release of the
album marks the one-year anniversary of his passing and is
    dedicated to Bear.

This is Bears unique vision how he heard the band live,
and how he wanted to transmit it. From the very speciï¬c
(non)stereo mix, to the cover artwork he commissioned
from Stanley Mouse, to the liner notes written by those
who knew Bear best, this truly is Bears presentation of this phenomenal band and inspirational music.

    Dead Language (Awaiting Repress)

If you spent every minute, every penny of your adult life on the road, you might make a record like Dead Language.

There's something that happens when four people have been playing music together, day in and day out, for ten years. In every basement, every colossal concert hall, every small European nation that would have them, the same four people playing the same four instruments. A full decade of plane tickets and van repairs and hangovers and fast food. At some point, the interaction between instruments, between members, transcends the brotherly love of most touring bands and enters the terrifying realm of twin telepathy. The Flatliners aren't just four dudes banging out riffs five hundred miles from home every night. They're four dudes banging out riffs in the hallways of the Overlook Hotel just like the unsettling twin girls in the The Shining. You see what I'm getting at yet?

It's been three years since Cavalcade (2010), The Flatliners' most successful album to date. A behemoth of a record, it brought famous friends like A Wilhelm Scream and Dillinger Four into the fold for huge songs like "Shithawks" and "Bleed."
Which is why Dead Language is the perfect response - it's the brutally crisp sound of four people in a room, the sonic payoff of a decade of learning how to play as one fierce unit. Its strength doesn't come from racks of guitars or bass drops, but from its sparse precision. The band's songwriting chops are as honed as their playing, allowing them the freedom to bang out their point quickly ("Young Professionals") or take their time to make an impact ("Ashes Away").

The Flatliners' records have always been an accurate, honest portrait of where the band lived, from the youthful explosion of Destroy to Create (2005) to the nuance of blooming adulthood on The Great Awake (2007), Which is why Dead Language, the band's most direct and vital record to date, is the monument to the honesty of ten years in the trenches that it has to be.

    Living Daylight

Michael Rault is a Toronto based singer, guitarist and songwriter fronting his own eponymously named band. A gifted multi-instrumentalist and arranger, his hooky blend of pop rock refracts an evolution of guitar based music through the ages. An era-defying mischievousness defines his synthesis of jukebox R'n'B, and acid psych as refracted through the experience of an adolescence spent idolizing the clever craftsmanship of the Beatles and the wiggy New Orleans textures of Dr. John in equal measure. As a recent transplant from his native Edmonton, the album is a melodically adventurous take on a classic theme - leaving home to make your way in the big city. Produced and recorded in collaboration with Renny Wilson (Mint Records), Living Daylight is a dynamic fusion of the past and future. An inclination for early Rock N' Roll is perverted by a heady production sensibility akin to the warped contemporary psych of Tame Impala. As a document of oddball DIY songwriting Living Daylight fits nicely in the lineage of records created by Ex-Edmontonian contemporaries like Mac Demarco or Sean Nicholas Savage. There must be something in the water .

    Love From With The Dead

With the Dead - Love From With the Dead

Doom is all around us. The optimism of a new millennium has steadily disintegrated. The light at the end of the tunnel turned out to be a burning tower block and the powers-that-be are dancing in the smouldering ruins. Humanity is eating itself and we're all terminally fucked. As a result, it makes perfect sense that the emergence of British doom metal mavens With The Dead would strike a dissonant chord with so many people. Formed in 2014 by former Cathedral/Napalm Death frontman and Rise Above Records boss Lee Dorrian and ex-Electric Wizard/Ramesses bassisit/guitarist Tim Bagshaw, the band coalesced in a monetary burst of spontaneity and shared fury, resulting in the release of their eponymous debut album in 2015: one of that year's most widely acclaimed releases and a welcome shot in the arm for fans of merciless, unrelenting sonic despair.

"We were very happy with the way the first album was received," says Lee. "To be honest, there were no real expectations with the first LP. It's hard to explain. We just got together and did it. There was no big anticipation. We knew it was going to be well received by certain people, just because of the sheer heaviness of it, but we didn't think it would get the reaction it did. It sold really well and got a good response all around. It came together so strangely and so fast. We hadn't gone round, sweating in the clubs, although we've all done that previously. The record came out on Rise Above so it was easy and there were no demands from anyone except ourselves. The important thing is, we didn't want it to be seen as some novelty project band."

Hell-bent on staking a further claim to be doom metal's most intense and remorseless practitioners, With The Dead have now completed work on their second album, Love From With The Dead. Comprising tracks recorded during two separate sessions with celebrated studio guru Jaime Gomez Arellano, the new material represents the first fruits of the band's recently retooled line-up. Joining Lee and Tim are bassist Leo Smee and drummer Alex Thomas, who replaces the departed Mark Greening. As Lee explains, the band's new incarnation generated great chemistry from the start.

"Tim came over from New Jersey, where he still lives, and we booked four nights' rehearsals with Leo and Alex to see how it was going to work. Literally, on the first night, they had the whole set nailed within three or four hours. It sounded better than ever before, too. So the next three nights were pointless and we didn't need them, so we spent the time going over ideas for new songs and by the end we had four brand new songs. It was crazy. Then we thought 'While Tim's over, let's go in the studio and record them ' Luckily, Gomez was free and we went over to his studio and recorded the four new tracks, they're the last four on the album, and it was all done just like that. The other three tracks were recorded nearly a year later, again with just one night's rehearsal. It was all done super quick."

For those who flinched at the sheer, unforgiving brutality of With The Dead's first record, the songs on Love From With The Dead are liable to cause major emotional trauma. Darker, denser, more despondent and sickeningly heavy in numerous senses of the word, this is an album that re-establishes doom as a genre that embraces the extreme and not just some cosy, nostalgic reimagining of the early '70s. From opener Isolation's slithering howl of torment and the crushing, schizophrenic barrage of Egyptian Tomb through to the expansive, drone-driven horrors of the closing CV1 (a mournful lament to Lee Dorrian's home city of Coventry that features a guest appearance by home-town comrade and electro-noise maverick Russell Haswell), Love From With The Dead grimly extinguishes the light of hope and hammers home the hatred and futility that plagues our brief and brittle lives.

"The thinking was that the first LP was meant to be the heaviest we could possibly make, but then what do you next?" Lee muses. "Well, the only thing you can do is make the next one even heavier. So that was the ambition and the intention, to make it even more crushing. But to be able to do that you have to be crushed yourself. This last couple of years have been quite soul-destroying. There's been a lot of personal shit going on, and during this whole process so much fucking bad shit has happened in my personal life and other people's personal lives. Everything you hear on this LP, the angst is very real. I've never felt so disillusioned with life and the world around me, not since the first Cathedral album!"

Irrefutable evidence that With The Dead are a formidable and substantial proposition, the quartet's second album could hardly provide a more apposite soundtrack to the deeply fucked up and irrevocably dysfunctional state of the world in 2017. Both a fine example of the simple, savage power of the riff and an authentic outpouring of anger, bitterness, bile and vivid existential dread, it is the living, breathing, screaming embodiment of heaviness itself. Cometh the hour, cometh the bringers of doom

"I'm 50 next year and you're supposed to mellow out when you get older, but why?" Lee asks. "I don't feel like mellowing out. The world's getting worse, the atmosphere is getting heavier, people treat each other like shit and there's so much negativity, how are you supposed to chill out when all that's going on? I'm in a privileged position to be able to be in a band like this, so why fuck around? The band's called With The Dead and it's a doom band, why would you want to mellow out? It's got to be pure nihilism or nothing."

It's a beautiful thing when a good band turns to great; when they put out an album that ends all skepticism concerning the band and turns everyone's head. Such is the case with Comeback Kid's spectacular sophomore effort, Wake The Dead.

The band's passion-filled debut, Turn It Around, put this band near the forefront of the straight edge hardcore movement, with its breakneck speeds and heart-stomping breakdowns. Still, people argued that it was a bit too generic for comfort, and that the album's songs blended into one another after five songs, making for a rather boring listen after ten minutes. Now, I don't know if the band took those comments to heart, but Wake The Dead has remedied any problems the band has had in the past and has turned out to be a flawless effort from a band who will no doubt be name-dropped as one of the most elite bands in hardcore after this release.

Where Turn It Around failed, Wake The Deaad excels; each song is rather distinct, not in the fact that there are a lot of "departures" to be found, but that each song has its own identity and its own parts that are unique to the song. Also, the length of the album has been cut short by four tracks, from fifteen to eleven, making for a more concise (but no less intense) listen. Lastly, the production is as in-your-face as a hardcore album could sound, making the move to Victory Records (I know, we all groaned when we heard it) a seemingly helpful move. Simply put, Wake The Dead sounds as amazing as the music is. The vocals are cleaner, the drums are more effective, and the gang vocals sound fuller. Check the end of the title track for proof; it's the best sing-along since Bane's "Can We Start Again."

Comeback Kid's music has also taken a turn towards the more punk rock-influenced hardcore spectrum, exchanging breakdowns for sheer speed and surprisingly more melodic (but no less hard-hitting) riffs. In fact, there's almost nary a breakdown to be found here; you've got your typical slower-paced rhythms to get the kids stomping, but nothing as earth-shattering as the end of, say, "All In A Year," the opener from the band's debut. The most amazing part is that you will not even notice; the songs are that good. Besides, you can still get all of the breakdown mayhem found on their debut if you see them live, which I highly consider, for they're currently on the straight edge hardcore tour of a lifetime, opening for Bane and With Honor.

There's also nothing like listening to an album for the first time and being ripped in half by an amazing album opener; "False Idols Fall" is the quintessential hardcore anthem. It's got speed, power, gang vocals, and a powerful closing, and all you can do after the song is over is smile because it was just so absolutely perfect. I can't remember the last hardcore song that made me smile. From the opening, to the insane gang vocals of "Wake The Dead," to the anthemic and soon-to-be crowd favorite "Partners In Crime," to the technicality of "Bright Lights Keep Shining," you're left in awe at how good this band sounds. Scott Wade's vocals are top-notch and unbelievably charismatic, and the guitar work is spectacular, not for its technicality and hard-to-play parts, but just for making some of the best hardcore riffs I've ever heard. Every song is excellent, and, as stated before, each has its own identity, something that is hard to come by in recent years with hardcore music.

This is a hands down ten out of ten. I've heard very few albums that have knocked me on my ass past a month's worth of listening, but Wake The Dead has done it. This is one hell of musical accomplishment, and is 100% deserving of a perfect rating. Pick this up TODAY.

BACK IN PRINT! A good day for Botch consisted of utterly laying to waste everything in their path and having a grand ol' time while doing so. The same is true of their recordings, huge monstrous concoctions of metal, noise, indie rock guitar trickery, full of depth and minute secrets which slowly secreted themselves with successive listens. There is no question that part of what made Botch so great is their ability as players, but more important, and even more impressive perhaps, was the way they fit the pieces together - odd time signatures, seemingly impossible riffs made to sound easy, the occasional melodic passages, and devastating anthemic movements that managed to inspire hordes while simultaneously escaping the redundant simplicity of the conventional hardcore sing along.

Botch has continued to tour both the US as well as the European continent and have seen many new bands emerge, building upon the tracks they themselves helped to create. Bands like Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, and many others have continued to push the envelope of technical ferocity and awe inspiring performances in the live setting, but still Botch stand alone - proving themselves to be ultimately one of the most entertaining, challenging, and unique entities to have ever existed with in the hardcore realm and beyond it.

This tremendous 6 track EP is a fitting testament to their will and intent, cementing their legacy as one of the untouchable greats, destined to influence the coming generations. We are more than sad to see them go, but as shown from the opening notes of "Spaim", they absolutely refuse to go down quietly and we can all rest assured that the echoes of this explosion will shake us for years to come.

    First Ever American LP Release

    Newly Re-Mastered By Joe Gastwirt

For a legacy filled with legendary performances, the Grateful Dead Live at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco on August 13th 1975 stands out. The band only played 4 shows during that entire year! (Remarkable for a band that toured non-stop for decades) and at their August 13th show, they rolled multi-track tape (which allowed for the band decades later to properly mix the show).

Because the Great American Music Hall holds less than 1,000 people (another unique thing about this show), it was an invitation only performance in which the band debuted their recent studio album Blues For Allah in a live setting.

Although One From The Vault has been available on CD nearly continuously since 1991, the vinyl version was only available for less than a year (and in Europe only) in the early 1990's. This deluxe vinyl reissue marks the first time this legendary show has been available anywhere in over 20 years and the first time in America.

Rolling Stone magazine has described One From The Vaultas:

''The closest the Dead came in the Seventies to the band's trippy, late-Sixties peak, and the performance indulged the group's jazzy, free-form impulses even further. ''Help on the Way,'' ''Franklin's Tower'' and ''The Music Never Stopped'' cohere into a twenty-minute song cycle. ''King Solomon's Marbles,'' a tumbling, polyrhythmic instrumental by bassist Phil Lesh, crackles with energy. Inventive percussion duets by Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann are appended to ''Eyes of the World,'' as well as to the pretty, elliptical ''Crazy Fingers.'' The crowning touch is ''Blues for Allah,'' which runs 21 minutes and explores inner space with a meditative intensity barely hinted at on the studio version.''

    Europe '72 (Awaiting Repress)

Nearly 40 years ago, the Grateful Dead released Europe '72, a triple live album documenting its historic trek across Europe that became not only one of the band's best-selling releases, but also set the gold standard for live Dead.

The Grateful Deads first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead family came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Deads label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour.

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums: Workingmans Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (Skull & Roses). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the groups exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. This would also be Pigpen's final tour with the band.

There was a ton of new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of 71 (after Skull & Roses was out) and during the spring of 72, including Tennessee Jed, Jack Straw, Hes Gone, Ramble on Rose, One More Saturday Night and Mr. Charlie. All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned hit albums such as Cumberland Blues and Sugar Magnolia, as well as spectacular versions of Truckin and I Know You Rider.

    Anthem Of The Sun

Ranked 287/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Originally released in 1968, the aspiring Anthem of the Sun is the second album from The Grateful Dead and it finds the band refining the dynamics of their live set in the confines of the studio while simultaneously challenging the conventions of the LP medium. The addition of lyricist Robert Hunter and percussionist Mickey Hart helps take the Dead's brand of improvisational psychedelia to new heights here and displays that they could be as equally transcendent in the studio.
