Dr. John A.K.A. The Night Tripper is a singer, songwriter, voice actor, pianist, and guitarist, whose music combines Blues, Pop, Jazz, Zydeco, Boogie Woogie and Rock & Roll.

Active as a session musician since the late 1950s, he gained a cult following in the late 1960's following the release of his album Gris-Gris and his appearance at the Bath Festival of Blues and Progressive music. He performed a wildly theatrical stage show inspired by medicine shows, Mardi Gras costumes and voodoo ceremonies. This eventually resulted in his signature 'voodoo' music style.

The Sun Moon & Herbs is described by Allmusic as dark and swampy and best listened to on a hot, muggy night with the sound of thunder rumbling off in the distance like jungle drums.

The centerpiece of the album is Familiar Reality, a long cut based on one evil-sounding Stones-type riff. As usual, Dr. John's strength lies in his galvanizing; mesmerizing choruses. The ones on Black John the Conqueror and File Gumbo are unforgettable.

    In The Right Place

Dr. John, or Mac Rebennack as known to friends and family, is universally celebrated as the living embodiment of the rich musical heritage exclusive to New Orleans. His very colorful musical career began in the 1950s when he wrote and played guitar on some of the greatest records to come out of the Crescent City, including recordings by Professor Longhair, Art Neville, Joe Tex and Frankie Ford. A notorious gun incident forced the artist to give up the guitar and concentrate on organ and piano. Further trouble at home sent Dr. John west in the 1960s, where he continued to be in demand as a session musician, playing on records by Sonny and Cher, Van Morrison and Aretha Franklin to name a few. He also launched his solo career, developing the charismatic persona of Dr. John The Night Tripper. Adorned with voodoo charms and regalia, a legend was born with his breakthrough 1968 album Gris-gris, which established his unique blend of voodoo mysticism, funk, rhythm & blues, psychedelic rock and Creole roots. Several of his many career highlights include the masterful album Sun, Moon and Herbs in 1971 which included cameos from Eric Clapton and Mick Jagger and 1973's In The Right Place, which contained the chart hits Right Place Wrong Time and Such A Night.

    Painted Garden (Discontinued)

Greg Ashley, mastermind behind The Gris Gris and The Mirrors, is going solo for the first time since his 1993 masterpiece Medicine Fuck Dream. The result, Painted Garden, is Ashley's most ambitious, textured, beautiful and dark record to date. Warmer and more intimate than Gris Gris' 2005 garage-psych stunner For The Season, Painted Garden still reflects the same vision behind that band's greatness.

Written in the burnt-out ghettos of Oakland and in Ashley's remote East Texas cabin, the album's ten songs drip with the psychedelic flair that turned on cats such as Roky Erikson, Mayo Thompson and Skip Spence (and more recently Vetiver, Six Organs of Admittance, and Devendra Banhart).

Beautifully orchestrated, sometimes fragile and always fuzzy, the album features great tunes, proof that the young songwriter's star is still on the rise. Written, produced and performed almost entirely by the artist, Painted Garden is a true vision realized, and puts Ashley right up there with the great musical minds of the day.

    This Is Another Life

Case Studies is the musical project of Jesse Lortz, a prolific Seattle based
musician. His lyrics wax and wane with truth and bare tales from his life.
Melodies surface as lines hummed in the in-between times. These easy
melodies coat the heavy subject matter of suicide, heartbreak, grief and
regret. As with his previous project, The Dutchess and the Duke, listening to Case Studies feels like taking part in an exploration of sentimental
landscapes. They appear and fade like dark light lingering on the horizon.
The meandering verse journeys to seek comfort in loneliness and vulnerability. Through the twisted subconscious, dawn breaks, breathing its
light on both the joyous and dismal occasions that mark life's milestones,
each song a continuation of his story, each song a probing examination of
    motivation and consequences.

This Is Another Life is Lortz's second full-length solo release on Sacred
Bones. It is the follow-up album to 2011's highly acclaimed The World is
Just a Shape to Fill the Night. This is Another Life features guest vocals by
Marissa Nadler on "Villain" and has the same producer and engineer,
Greg Ashley of the band Gris Gris, as the last album. Ashley also plays
percussion, organ and adds additional vocals & guitar. Lortz is also helped
out by Jon Parker (guitar / piano), Oscar Michel (bass), Joe Haener (percussion), Carey Lamprecht (violin) and Shawn Alpay (cello).

    Complete Control Sessions

Taking their name from the phenomenon of analog television frequency disturbances, Lafayette, Indianas TV Ghost conjures an especially sludgy and punishing brand of art-punk. They began making a name for themselves in 2007, when their first 7, Atomic Rain, was released by Die Stasi Records. A 12 EP on Die Stasi, a single on Columbus Discount Records and their debut album, Cold Fish, followed in 2009.

TV Ghosts sophomore full-length, Mass Dream was recorded by Greg Ashley (Gris Gris) and it is by far their clearest and most coherent release to date. While sacrificing none of the bands scuzz-punk dementia, Mass Dream is far less dense and impenetrable than its predecessor; Ghost frontman Tim Gicks lyrics are clearer and his complex song structure a bit easier to get a handle on. That said, this is still blood-boiling, spastic and down right evil music by anyones standards.

    Hardly Criminal

Crash's story unfolds with that particularly Southern swagger and with a tale of a Louisiana boy bred on Waffle House breakfasts and monster truck rallies, local Rodeos and the flicker of family bonfires. There was college for a hot minute, there was a move to the Irish Channel, there was the soaking in of all that is New Orleans, wet heat and Sazeracs, the wailing horns of jazz funerals, the teetering handmade floats of Mardi Gras, crawfish and etouffee and howling at the moon. There was work where he could get it, toiling as a PA on the studio sets, Hollywood coming south for the tax credits. It was on these film productions where crash earned his nickname, something to do with a questionable work ethic and repetitive tardiness (he admits you d have to ask one Ms. Rita Wilson for the real deal details). And yet despite his reputation (or perhaps because of it), he was anointed "assistant" to Johnny Knoxville during The!Dukes!of!Hazzard s run. (One can only imagine ) crash later joined the critically adored local act The Deadly Syndrome as lead singer and frontman, bringing his gris gris into the beautiful belly of the L.A. beast. Since then, crash has been barreling ahead, recording prolifically with The Deadly Syndrome, working with famed producer Daniel Lanios, composing a live stage score, acting in a few national commercials, and finally, after Deadly disbanded in 2013, heading out on the road with his pals, Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros, as percussionist and angelic vocal accompaniment. And somewhere in that heady mix in that combination of the rolling road, of California eucalyptus sway and dark NOLA mysteries, he discovered his true self - the wildaeyed, slyatongued, strutting, winking and wonderful crash of this here solo debut. Produced and engineered by the multitalented Ed Sharpe lead guitarist, Mark Noseworthy, (and featuring friends from the Zeros, Dawes, The Mystic Valley Band and more ) Hardly Criminal is the culmination of all that is strange and sad, hilarious and harmonious, about crash s own true tale. It is story a moving, funny, weird, and stunningly beautiful. You can hear the South, yes, Neville swing and Dr. John juaju, but you can also hear smooth soul, booty funk, and ragged folk, a mix of sounds taken from his past and pushed into the future, all accompanied by a deadpan storytelling prowess and a voice like a Cajun Prince (as in "The Artist Formerly Known As"). Hardly!Criminal! is the sum of crash s best parts - the sonic celebration of his story so far. So, set down a spell, cool yer bones, cher... and listen

The World Is Just A Shape To Fill The Night

Debut Solo Album from Dutchess & the Duke Songwriter, Jesse Lortz

Most of these songs were recorded with friends during Feb. 2011 by Greg Ashley (Gris Gris), in a secluded cabin in Sequim, WA. The cabin sessions marked the third time most of the songs had been recorded. Two of the songs on this album are from a previous recording session done at the Pool in Portland by Alex Yusimov. 'The Day We Met' is from a demo recording session I did at my grandfathers cabin on Lake Inez in Montana. A woman some of these songs are about flew out to visit me there. It was the last of the good times we had together.

Milana, Julia, Nicolas, Keegan, Greg, Suzie, Lisa, and Andrew came to the cabin to contribute to the album and take photographs and video. I wanted friends to join me because making records had always been a lonely process for me and I was ready to change that dynamic. Because this project is not a band, the focus has shifted so that I can play shows alone or with other people. I started writing the songs for this record when I was still married, and the most recent song was written on my 32nd birthday. This project also incorporates drawing, jewelry making, non-musical creative writing and a host of disciplines that I never got the chance to explore in previous bands. I am genuinely excited to be making music for probably the first time in my life. - Jesse Lortz

    Anutha Zone

    Import

For those of us who long for the days when Dr. John smeared himself with face paint, wore impossibly large headdresses, and sang about gris-gris, gumbo ya-ya, and croker courtbullion, Anutha Zone is indeed a heartening development.

In the late 60s Dr. John was a visionary musical alchemist, working with psychedelic imagery and funky rhythms to nab the rock crowd, then plying them with spooky swampland mythology and raw Southern R&B.

On Anutha Zone, Dr. John digs deep into that murky musical well once again, with stunning results. John Gris, Party Hellfire, and Soulful Warrior brilliantly fuse slow-burn grooves, sly musicianship, and Dr. John's elegantly gruff vocals, conjuring images of dark revelry down French Quarter back alleyways. This was the comeback of 1998, hands down.
