    Purple

Purple is the second studio album released by the Stone Temple Pilots. The album, building off the foundations laid by the band's debut album Core, was a huge success for the band, debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and remaining there for three weeks, eventually selling over six million copies. It spawned a number of successful singles - Vasoline, and Interstate Love Song both topped the Mainstream Rock Tracks charts, while Big Empty also cracked the top ten. Lesser known album cuts Pretty Penny and Unglued were also released as promotional radio singles.

The album's style sees an expansion of the band's sound. While the band's debut, Core, had a more grunge-oriented sound with churning guitar riffs and aggressive vocals, Purple saw the band shift to a more alternative rock-style, incorporating a number of influences, including psychedelic and southern rock.

A dominant force in rock music since the early '90s, Stone Temple Pilots proved to be one of the most accomplished and iconic bands of their generation, racking up 15 Billboard Top 10 singles - 6 of which hit #1 - and total sales in excess of 35 million albums worldwide. The California-based band went on hiatus in 2002, following the release of the critically acclaimed Shangri-La Dee Da, ultimately reuniting for a massive 2008 concert tour encompassing more than 65 dates across North America. Among their many accolades, Stone Temple Pilots received a Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocal Grammy Award for their #1 Mainstream Rock smash, Plush. Other honors bestowed upon the band over the years include additional Grammy award nominations, two American Music Awards, one Billboard Music Award, two Billboard Video Awards, and an MTV Video Music Award.

    Celebrity Skin

The 4th album of Hole was a huge commercial achievement, successfully bridging the gap between Grunge and guitar Pop. The band revolving around Kurt Cobain's widow Courtney Love carved a niche for themselves as the seminal female fronted Grunge group. Established in 1991, the band functioned as a cathartic outlet for enfant terrible Love, which makes their work incredibly compelling. Their 1998 album Celebrity Skin revealed a polished, energetic sound. Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins co-wrote 5 songs on this superb album, among which the title track and "Malibu", both of which were released as singles.

    Tonight's The Night

By 1975 Young had written some of the most enduring anthems in rock history. But from the slow, tension-building piano opening of Tonight's the Night, he downshifts into darkness and Crazy Horse's folk-country melodies take on a guttural hum that would eventually speak to generations of punk and grunge musicians.

Inspired by the overdose deaths of two of Young's friends, roadie Bruce Berry and guitarist Danny Whitten, the title track (and its closing reprise) is a hypnotic cry of why? Even the relative party songs, Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown and Roll Another Number, fit the album's bus-to-nowhere resignation. -Steve Knopper

    Superfuzz Bigmuff EP

Rock & roll got a badly needed revitalizing overhaul with Seattle's grunge explosion of the late 1980's, and Mudhoney was there to make sure it got done right. Although nearly eclipsed by the success of such bands as Nirvana and Pearl Jam, Mudhoney was arguably the most important grunge band of all. Their Touch Me I'm Sick defined a generation of disenchanted middle-class malcontents bored stiff by the predictable mire that rock & roll had become.

Superfuzz Bigmuff compiles the band's rare early singles in one convenient package. Twelve essential tracks here, and they all rock mightily. If you're old enough you'll want to say that you were there, if you know what you're talking about, folks might believe you. Do yourself a favor and familiarize yourself with the rock & roll revival that was Mudhoney.

    Screaming Life/Fopp

From the depths of the Sub Pop archives comes a reissue of
Soundgarden's thunderous opening salvo, Screaming Life, plus bonus
tracks from the Fopp EP and Sub Pop 200 compilation. This reissue
marks the first time these tracks will be available digitally, and their first
appearance on vinyl since the original, late-80s pressings (notwithstanding
a long-gone, late-'90s repress of Screaming Life). All tracks have been
remastered by Seattle studio wizard and producer of the original Screaming
Life and Sub Pop 200 sessions, Jack Endino, who had this to say about
    it:

"Ah, Screaming Life, Soundgarden's debut, and one of the first real
records I made for anyone outside my own band. I already knew
Soundgarden pretty well, since they and Skin Yard had shared the stage
many times in Seattle's tiny club scene circa 1985-1986. Soon after
opening Reciprocal Recording in July 1986, there I was with Soundgarden,
trying to make the most of our eight tracks. Somehow, we found room
for all of Matt Cameron's 'bonus tubs,' Hiro's primordial Fender bass,
and a whopping four tracks to share between Kim Thayil's mad guitar
psychedelia and Chris Cornell's still-expanding voice. 'Nothing To Say'
was the song that made us all look at each other and go, 'uh, holy crap,
    how did we do this?'

Stuff started happening. A&M came calling. SST agreed to put out
their next record. But Soundgarden was not finished with Sub Pop. They
contributed 'Sub Pop Rock City,' about Seattle's then-rising 'grunge'
scene, to the Sub Pop 200 comp; and they threw everyone a curveball
with Steve Fisk-produced Ohio Players and Green River covers on the
    Fopp EP.

The glorious vistas of a major label future awaited them. To quote Kim
from an old interview, 'It was karma, it was dogma, it was dog breath.'"

    Third Eye Blind

Third Eye Blind is the eponymous debut for the American alternative rock band Third Eye Blind, originally released in 1997. It spawned several singles, including top 10 charting Semi-Charmed Life, Jumper, and How's It Going to Be. While Third Eye Blind peaked at #25 on the Billboard 200, it spent 104 weeks on the charts. It is the group's bestselling album, having been certified 6x Platinum.

Third Eye Blind is catchier than the average post-grunge album, and that fact alone reveals a lot about the band. Instead of relying on standard, plodding grunge influences, Third Eye Blind draw heavily from the simple hook-laden traditions of classic Arena Rock, which makes the album more immediate. Third Eye Blind is easy on the ears, and its straight-ahead professionalism makes it a pleasurable listen for post-grungers.

Brimming with creativity, "Fluff" is the debut album from singer-songwriter Andy Gabbard (Buffalo Killers). This is "Modern Grunge Fuzz Pop with 60's aura". On "Fluff" you can hear the deeply-solid effects of the grunge genre and mid-90's 'alternative music' in a sonic gestalt. Exhibiting characteristics of fairly recent genres, as well as some classics that surrounded him during his youth, the album breaks barriers of seemingly comfortable, unthreatening music cultivating a physical embodiment of Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr, latter Beatles and even Brian Wilson!

    Tiny Music

The third Stone Temple Pilots album received critical acclaim for its broad spectrum of sounds - it proved the Pilots are anything but a one-day fly and also their Grunge roots (although being accused of being too 'commercial' sounding for true Grunge standards) are still firmly in
    place.

Guitarist Dean DeLeo is a true master of hooks and his palette of chords and melodies seems endless. Singer Scott Weiland's out-of-this-world lyrics set him apart as a true showman.

By slightly accentuating their music with Pop influences, this very strategy allows STP to distinguish themselves from the pack of flannel wearing, long haired bands that were raiding the airwaves in the '90s.

Alice in Chains, one of the darkest bands to emerge from Seattle in the early 90's. Their 1992 album 'Dirt' was a milestone in the grunge-genre. Tuned down guitars with massive gloomy vocals courtesy of guitarist Jerry Cantrell and enigmatic vocalist Layne Staley proved a killer combination.

'Dirt' is one of those masterpieces that wasn't meant to be, as it was written while the band was on tour only to let their demons out.

After extensive tours with Ozzy Osbourne and Van Halen the album ended in the top 10 of Billboard. The album closes with the superb grunge anthem Would? which was also featured in the movie Singles

Unfortunately singer Layne Staley died of a drug overdose in 2002 which ended the band abruptly.

The album sold over 400,000 copies in Canada and also performed well in many other territories. The five singles from the album include The Birdman, Starseed and Naveed. The title Naveed is taken from the Persian name for the bearer of good news.

Upon its release in the United States in the next year, the album was admired by critics and very well received by fans. The rhythm section of the band was praised by most critics as well as the diversity in the band member's musical backgrounds and Raine Maida's 'hauntingly provocative' lyrics. Uncle Anesthesia

After releasing three albums with Greg Ginn's underground label SST, Screaming Trees broke through in 1991 with Uncle Anesthesia on major label Epic. The band, fronted by Mark Lanegan (who would go on to collaborate solo with band members of Nirvana, Queens Of The Stone Age, Guns 'N Roses and Foo Fighters) is known for its raw psychedelic, whiskey voiced garage rock. This harder edge set the band apart from Seattle grunge contemporaries Alice In Chains and Soundgarden, gaining a loyal fanbase in the process. Uncle Anesthesia is produced by Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audioslave) and metal producer Terry Date, known for his recordings of Pantera, Prong, Overkill and White Zombie.

    Whiskey For The Holy Ghost

Whiskey for the Holy Ghost is the second solo album from Lanegan, and it was released January 18th, 1994. It builds upon the roots-music foundation Lanegan established with his debut The Winding Sheet. Released during the grunge explosion of the early 1990s, Whiskey for the Holy Ghost showcases Lanegan's growing maturity as a songwriter and vocalist. Lyrically, Lanegan continues to delve into the darker side of the human experience on songs like "Borracho" and the biblical "Pendulum." "House a Home" was released as a single with an accompanying video. Dan Peters of Mudhoney guests on the album, playing drums on the songs "Borracho" and "House a Home."

    In Deep Owl

In recent years, songwriter and Soundgarden bassist Ben Shepherd has been gradually moving away from the grunge rock aesthetic of his day job. (At least, as much as he can, given that the band are as synonymous with Seattle as its weather.) Spending the last four years stripping away the layers of grunge from his music, Shepherd turned introspective and acoustic. In fact, the songs which would form the basis of his upcoming debut record, In Deep Owl, were initially intended to feature only his voice and an acoustic guitar, but some longtime friends helped to subtly shift the sound and feel of the record.

Bringing on Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron and former Pearl Jam drummer Matt Chamberlain to help fill in the gaps in the songs, Shepherd used their percussive presence to add a weight and resonance to the album. The result is a collection of tracks which retain their acoustic inclusivity while still feeling tied to the overcast dreariness of his hometown.

Having previously released the raw-edged rocker "Baron Robber," the second song released off the album is "Collide". Closer to Mark Lanegan than to Chris Cornell, the contemplative acoustic guitar and mandolin help to evoke a sense of folksy serenity. Forgoing percussion of any sort here, Shepherd emphasizes the rhythmic interplay between his voice and the minimalist stringed instrumentation. Born from a thousand campfire songs, "Collide" draws you into its inner sanctum and keeps you spellbound, firmly holding you in place without you ever realizing it.
