Oscar Peterson was a Canadian jazz pianist and composer. He was called the Maharaja of the keyboard by Duke Ellington, but simply O.P. by his friends. He released over 200 recordings, won eight Grammy Awards, and received numerous other awards and honors. He is considered one of the greatest jazz pianists and played thousands of concerts worldwide in a career lasting more than 60 years.

Peterson made numerous duo performances and recordings with bassists Ray Brown, Sam Jones, and Irving Ashby, Herb Ellis, and Barney Kessel, pianists Count Basie, Herbie Hancock, Benny Green, and Oliver Jones, trumpeters Clark Terry and Louis Armstrong, and many other important jazz players.

Peterson redefined the jazz trio by bringing the musicianship of all three members to the highest level. Together with Joe Pass (guitar) and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (bass), Oscar Peterson (piano) called the trio in his own words, 'the most stimulating' and productive setting for public performances as well as in studio recordings.

The Trio is a 1973 live recording at the London House in Chicago. Winner of the 1975 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Performance By A Group, this energetic live set is the highlight of all three storied careers.

In his Allmusic review, critic Scott Yanow complimented the playing of Pass and Pedersen but wrote the reason to acquire this set is for the remarkable Oscar Peterson. The pianist brilliantly investigates several jazz styles... Peterson really flourished during his years with Norman Granz's Pablo label, and this was one of his finest recordings of the period.

    Boss Guitar

Before he moved away from straight-ahead jazz and starting playing what is now known as smooth jazz, Wes Montgomery was one of bop's finest guitarists. Montgomery's bop period ended much too soon, but thankfully, he recorded his share of rewarding bop albums when he was still bop-oriented -- and one of them is Boss Guitar, which Orrin Keepnews produced in 1963. It's a trio recording, employing Mel Rhyne on organ and Jimmy Cobb on performances that have held up well over time; Montgomery shows how expressive a ballad player he could be on the standards For Heaven's Sake and Days of Wine and Roses, but the fast tempo exuberance of The Trick Bag (a Montgomery original) serves him equally well. Montgomery swings the blues with pleasing results on Fried Pies (another Montgomery original), while Consuelo Velázquez's Besame Mucho (which is usually played at a slow ballad tempo) is successfully transformed into medium-tempo Latin jazz. Boss Guitar is among the bop-oriented Montgomery albums that should continue to be savored after all these years.

In addition to the usual standards from the genre, Latin-flavored arrangements of cool jazz (Gerry Mulligan's "Line for Lyons"), swing ("I Found a New Baby"), and standards (George and Ira Gershwin's "'S Wonderful") work every bit as well."- Ken Dryden, All Music Guide (4 Stars)

    So Much Guitar!

Wes Montgomery appeared as leader or co-leader on a dozen Riverside albums, in a wide variety of formats
ranging from organ trios to one with full string orchestra. Some of the most rewarding simply placed him in a studio with a superior rhythm section and let him deal with a mixture of ballads, blues, and swingers. This album, his fourth for the label, is a notable example of this straightforward approach. It features the flawless support of Ron Carter and Hank Jones.

    If Then Not When

The ghost stories, murder ballads and grimoires on Louisville, KY's King's Daughters & Sons full-length album If Then Not When are haunting, spare and at times explosively unsettling; part William Faulkner, part Led Zeppelin. Informed by, but not beholden to the history of its members (Shipping News, Rachel's, The For Carnation, Shannon Wright), their songs are singular, thoughtful and best heard loud. If Then Not When was made direct to 2 tape in 2008 and 2009 at The Funeral Home by Kevin Ratterman, engineer for California Guitar Trio, My Morning Jacket and Wax Fang. Mastered by Bob Weston, Chicago Mastering Service.

    This Addiction (Awaiting Repress)

It's been 11 years since Alkaline Trio released their first full length album, Goddamnit. In that time, they've toured the world, sold over a million records, and expanded their sound radically beyond their original straight ahead punk style, incorporating production slick enough to earn them mass exposure. Now with This Addiction, their seventh album and first for Epitaph, the Chicago rockers are heading back to their roots. This record is a rock record but our punk rock upbringing definitely shines through, more so than our last few records, says singer/guitarist Matt Skiba. The vibe is similar to our humble beginnings. It's a step forward but I also think it has glimmers of our past in it. To recapture the sound of the early days, the band took a less is more approach on this record, keeping the keyboard to a minimum and sticking to the guitar driven slash and burn that has made them a household name.

Multiple Styles Displayed On Holly Cole's 1993 Sophomore Album

Mastered By Bernie Grundman From The Original Master Tapes

Plating And 200-Gram Vinyl Pressing By Quality Record Pressings!

Old-Style Gatefold Tip-On Jacket By Stoughton Printing

Holly Cole brings her own dimension to the tradition of cabaret, a strong voice that's still capable of nuance, an ear for quirky repertoire, and a light touch that keeps some of these performances floating just at the edge of irony.

On her second album, 1993's Don't Smoke in Bed, Cole explores varied musical styles, adding pop, blues, country and a French ballad to her standard, low-key jazz. It's a favorite of ours, which is why for this Analogue Productions reissue we've given it the reissue treatment it deserves. Bernie Grundman did the mastering, from the original analog tapes, at his Los Angeles studio, giving this release a spectacular foundation. Plating and pressing on 200-gram heavyweight vinyl was done by Gary Salstrom and crew at Quality Record Pressings, makers of the world's finest-sounding LPs. Lastly, we wrapped up the whole package in a premium gatefold tip-on jacket from Stoughton Printing. There's nothing but aces in this smokin' hot reissue and the quality shines through.

Holly's delivery of more traditional fare shines on Cole Porter's witty Get Out of Town and Kurt Weill's torchy Je Ne T'aime Pas, while she brings clarity, power, and anthemic passion to the surprising treatment of Johnny Nash's I Can See Clearly Now. She's generally well supported in this intimate set by pianist Aaron Davis and bassist David Piltch, while there's sparing and effective use of strings. There are fine guest spots by tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, on Everyday Will Be Like a Holiday, and David Lindley, whose steel guitar contributes to the strange country music of Don't Let the Teardrops Rust Your Shining Heart.

    Annabel Dream Reader

Formed in Brighton in 2011, The Wytches comprises Kristian Bell (vocals, guitar), Dan Rumsey (bass, vocals) and Gianni Honey (drums). Led by Bell's luminous lyricism, feral delivery and overdriven, surf-like guitar bends, the trio create a sound that is at once raucous and unruly, and yet decorated with semi-automatic poetry and authentic emotional clout.

Recorded at Liam Watson's 8-track analogue ToeRag Studios in Hackney, Annabel Dream Reader was tracked in two days under the supervision of producer Bill Ryder-Jones (ex-The Coral). Comprising thirteen songs, Annabel Dream Reader sees the three-piece accomplish a dark and heady sound that embraces the black arts and the more extreme limits of rock, but which is never prescriptively macabre. Far from it, the band displays a broadness of influences - all at once the songs reference surf, grunge, metalcore, spy movie scores.

A Tremendously Important Historic Jazz Record That Pairs Guitar Virtuoso Wes Montgomery With Miles Davis' Rhythm Section - Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb

This is timeless music that has inspired innumerable jazz guitarists and aficionados. In fact, jazz guitar great Pat Metheny has said, I learned to play listening to Wes Montgomery's Smokin' At The Half Note. Metheny additionally said that the solo on If You Could See Me Now is his favorite of all time.

This legendary session was recorded at a New York nightclub. It captures Montgomery at the height of his improvisational powers. Many consider it the best performance on record by one of the most inventive guitarists in jazz history.

Highlights include the Miles Davis opener, No Blues and the following track, Tadd Dameron's If You Could See Me Now. And the album's versions of Unit 7 and Four On Six have helped to establish these songs as jazz standards.

Buffalo Tom formed at the University of Massachusetts at
Amherst in 1984 - a breeding ground of post punk guitar
bands like Dinosaur Jr. and the Pixies. They thrived on US
college radio in the late 1980's and toured extensively in
Europe, the US, Australia and Japan. In 1992 the band
recorded their third album Let Me Come Over with a varied
group of songs they had been developing at home and
on the road - mixing their live power trio sound with some
more acoustic based guitar ballads. The album's single

Regal Degal is a power trio consisting of Josh da Costa [Gemini] on guitars and vocals, Josiah Wolfson [Libra] on bass, and Jamen Whitelock [Virgo] on drums. Formed in Brooklyn in late 2009, the group recently relocated to Los Angeles. Interplay (Awaiting Repress)

One of Bill Evans' only recordings issued during his pivotal early years (1956-1964) without his trio. Adding trumpet and guitar to create an unusual quintet alignment, concentrating on standard tunes, and with brighter tempos than are generally associated with his playing, it is a uniquely valuable addition to the catalog of perhaps the most important pianist in modern jazz. With Freddie Hubbard, Jim Hall, Percy Heath and Philly Joe Jones.

    Killing Time (Discontinued)

Killing Time is the debut album from the San Francisco, CA trio Terry Malts consisting of Corey Cunningham (guitar, backing vocals), Phil Benson (bass guitar, lead vocals) and Nathan Sweatt (drums, backing vocals). Displaying a slick, intelligent take on modern chainsaw pop, Killing Time certainly lives up to its name! Their heads-down live shows and immaculate power-pop songwriting have made this irreverent punk trio one of the most talked about up and comers. Mashing up the best bits from such stellar forebears as The Undertones, Buzzcocks and Descendents, Terry Malts haven't forgotten their roots or the fact that one of the key elements of punk has always been the pursuit of having a good time at all costs.

Often it's the moments of silence that hit you hardest. - This is Fake DIY

"A radiant, warm and endearingly amateurish talent. THE FADER

"Steeped in indie lore, in a charming, self-effacing way of translating emotion into sound" CLASH MUSIC

London based trio Flowers ends their live shows with singer Rachel Kenedy utterly still, accompanying herself on a one string bass guitar, soul laid bare. It is a stark and quiet moment in comparison to what came before, which can be characterized by Sam Ayres blur of kinetic energy on guitar and Jordan Hockley's urgent and precision drumming all performed with a sense of minimalism and brevity. It is this minimalist approach that best characterizes the fourteen deceptively simple pop songs that comprise Flowers debut, Do What You Want To, It's What You Should Do.

Produced by Bernard Butler, Flowers' genius is in their ability to convey a remarkable amount of emotion with minimal instrumentation. Rachel possesses one of those beautiful pop voices to die for, with echoes of Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins), Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star) and Harriet Wheeler (The Sundays). Haunting, mesmerizing and intense, Do What You Want To, It's What You Should Do is an impressive calling cared from a sensational new band.
