    The Pink Panther (Speakers Corner)

    The film director Blake Edwards brought into existence what is probably the best opening sequence to his comic crime film when he commissioned a young enterprising company to produce an animated Pink Panther cartoon film. The creative team came up with the idea of giving the cold, glittering diamond the guise of a cool, pink panther, which leads a bungling detective on a merry dance to the slinky sound of the Panther theme.



    Mancini would not be Mancini if he did not bathe the film location - the skiing resort Cortina d'Ampezzo -in highly varied musical colours and genres. His well-known love for dance music finds itself in the samba (It Had Better Be Tonight), the shuffle (Champagne And Quail), and the cha-cha (Something For Sellers). But also the ballad, sung by a muted trumpet and saxophone (Royal Blue), or the simple combination of keyboard and strings (Piano And Strings) are all woven into the story. One of the most memorable and delightful sounds is that of the accordion, whose melodies evoke an atmosphere that is filled with the Bohème, Paris and the sound of the musette. This music is never gaudy, but subtle, just like a panther padding quietly along. And if your appetite is now whetted for more, there is an extra portion of Mancini to be found in Breakfast At Tiffany's (RCA LSP 2362).

    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Breakfast At Tiffany's (Speakers Corner)

    Long nights, dizzy parties, a variety of men-friends, and breakfast standing before the window display of the famed jewellery company govern the life of the dazzling Holly Golightly, who has in reality a very ordinary name and poverty-stricken background. All the more rich is the musical carpet that Henry Mancini lays beneath the feet of the exotic, wealthy-husband-seeking socialite. The tender, plaintive worldwide hit Moon River apart, Mancini and his Hollywood musicians mix a sugar-sweet sound with enough acrid elements to glaze over the capricious lady's character. The cool big band sound is spiced with a bold trumpet solo (The Big Blow Out) and mellow violins with a suspiciously tame male choir (Breakfast At Tiffany's). As is well known, there is a great deal of dancing in the film, including a number with a Latin-American rhythm (Latin Golightly), and a grooving mambo (Loose Caboose). At the end of the film even the Moon River swells to become a bubbling cha-cha, as though to say that a 'happy end' must in no way sound sentimental.

    Christina Crawford's controversial memoir about the abuse she suffered at the hands of mother Joan Crawford spawned an even more controversial movie starring Faye Dunaway as the Hollywood diva. Panned by many, Mommie Dearest won (?) an award for the worst movie of the '90s, and to this day is loved/loathed for being an over-the-top camp cult classic. But one aspect of the movie was universally hailed: Henry Mancini's elegant score.


    Fashioned to re-create the classic film themes from '40s and '50s dramas by such composers as Bernard Herrmann, Alex North, and Elmer Bernstein, Mancini's work is a model of restraint, balancing passion and pathos while commenting and adding texture to the emotional extremes being displayed on screen. As always, Mancini's command of orchestral color is masterful, and while none of the melodies here are quite as scene-stealing as, say, his work on Days of Wine and Roses among his darker-themed movies, he does save quite a punch for last with the penultimate "No More Pain" track.     Coming off a double Oscar win for his Breakfast at Tiffany's score, Henry Mancini produced this score for the Howard Hawks-directed, John Wayne-starring safari comedy Hatari!.


    This is at first a fun blend of jazz and Afro-exotica, jungle drums mixed with a classic bop combo. Elsewhere, however, the soundtrack opts for some pleasant, but very Western jazz, only stopping for the African instrument-sampler 'The Sounds of Hatari,' which features some nice treated piano. The filmmakers were probably hoping that the Mercer and Carmichael song 'Just for Tonight' would be as much a success as Tiffany's 'Moon River,' but if Hatari! is memorable for anything, it's for the incredibly goofy 'Baby Elephant Walk,' which has gone on to be infamous musical shorthand for kookiness of any stripe. - AllMusic.com.

    Charade is a 1963 Technicolor American romantic comedy/mystery film directed by Stanley Donen, written by Peter Stone and Marc Behm, and starring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. It spans three genres: suspense thriller, romance, and comedy.


    The film is notable for its screenplay, for having been filmed on location in Paris and for Henry Mancini's score and theme song. Charade has received generally positive reviews from critics and was additionally noted to contain influences of genres such as whodunit, screwball and spy thriller.


    Film director Stanley Donen had been charmed by Henry Mancini's song Baby Elephant Walk from the film Hatari!, so he contacted Mancini from London to tell him about his current picture. Donen had directed several famous musical films throughout the 1950s and he now intended to put his own slant on a Hitchcock-like thriller and he wanted a strong melody in the background score.


    Johnny Mercer wrote the lyrics.


    The title track Charade is a sad, lonely Parisian waltz. It was nominated that year for the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

    If the recognition of one's peers is the true measure of success, then few men are as successful as composer, arranger, and conductor Henry Mancini. In a career that spanned 40 years, writing for film and television, Mancini won four Oscars and twenty Grammys, the all-time record for a pop artist. Plus he received a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995.


    Mancini's best-known works include the jazz-idiom theme to The Pink Panther film series (The Pink Panther Theme), his Moon River to Breakfast at Tiffany's, and the theme to the Peter Gunn television series. The Peter Gunn Theme won the first Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Mancini also had a long collaboration on film scores with the film director Blake Edwards.

    Vocalist Stacey Kent may or may not be »the greatest ballad singer in half a century«, as her PR claims, but her straightforward renditions of these by-request ballads are not at all generic. What makes them consistently delightful is her unique sound and delivery. There's a certain brassiness, a trumpet-like pointedness, in her voice, as well as a host of endearing idiosyncrasies. Kent knows how to make every tune fit her own musical persona. Dreamsville includes a number of seldom-heard gems, particularly You Are There by Johnny Mandel and Dave Frishberg, You're Looking at Me by Bobby Troup, and the ever-stunning title track by Henry Mancini. She also presents perennial favorites like Polka Dots and Moonbeams and Thanks for the Memory (the latter not exactly a ballad). And although this is Kent's hour all the way, her band provides expert backing and more than a few surprises. The singer's husband, Jim Tomlinson, takes a break from tenor sax to play a sumptuous clarinet solo on Polka Dots. And in the midst of Rodgers & Hart's Little Girl Blue, pianist David Newton, bassist Simon Thorpe, and drummer Jasper Kviberg fall away, entering again only after Tomlinson and Colin Oxley perform a hushed tenor/guitar duet chorus.

    Doxy present a picture disc reissue of Henry Mancini's soundtrack for Breakfast at Tiffany's, originally released in 1961. In a career spanning over four decades, composer, conductor and arranger Enrico Henry Mancini (1924-1994) won numerous Academy and Grammy awards for his scores to well-known films and television series, including The Pink Panther, Hatari! (1962), Two For The Road (1967), Wait Until Dark (1967), Peter Gunn (1967), and of course, 1961's Breakfast at Tiffany's (which alone won five Grammys and two Oscars). The Breakfast at Tiffany's soundtrack is probably best remembered for Audrey Hepburn's legendary performance of Mancini's Moon River (lyrics by Johnny Mercer), which won an Academy Award for Best Song that year. Moon River went on to become one of the best loved songs of all time, but it first made its appearance here, in Breakfast at Tiffany's. Edition of 500.

    Music Composed By Henry Mancini

    Henry Mancini composed and conducted the score for the 1966 film Arabesque, starring Gregory Peck and Sophia Loren. The soundtrack album contains nine instrumental pieces, including The Zoo Chase in three parts and a vocal version of We've Loved Before performed by a mixed chorus.

    As you might expect from music written to serve a film about international intrigue, the moods vary from exotic with Arabesque, and Facade to whimsical in Ascot to what can only be described as spy music in The Zoo Chase, Pt. 3.

    Something for Sophia is a jazzy, rhythmic composition that features the guest trumpet of Jack Sheldon. The most compelling piece is the spooky Dream Street, written to accompany a bizarre murder scene, which is nearly as ambient and odd as Brian Eno's Ambient 1: Music for Airports. The first two parts of The Zoo Chase, too, find Mancini working in this otherworldly realm of tense, atmospheric music.

    Arabesque is an intriguing instrumental work of many moods and styles that can be enjoyed on its own merits.

    This is not only a great LP but a key piece of jazz and pop music history. Back in 1958, Peter Gunn was one of the unexpected hits of the new television season, capturing the imagination of millions of viewers by mixing private eye action with a jazz setting. Composer Henry Mancini was more than fluent in jazz, and his music nailed down the popularity of the series. With the main title theme, a driving, ominous, exciting piece of music to lead off the album, The Music from Peter Gunn became a huge hit, charting extraordinarily high for a television soundtrack and doing so well that RCA Victor came back the next year asking for a second helping (More Music From Peter Gunn) from Mancini.



    The music holds up: Session At Pete's Pad is a superb workout for the trumpets of Pete Candoli, Uan Rasey, Conrad Gozzo, and Frank Beach, while Barney Kessel's electric guitar gets the spotlight during Dreamsville; and Sorta Blue and Fallout are full-ensemble pieces that constitute quintessential 'cool' West Coast jazz of the period. In other words, it's all virtuoso orchestral jazz, presented in its optimum form.

    About Speakers Corner



    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

    Just in time for what would have been jazz great Art Pepper's 87th birthday (September 1st) and in cooperation with Art's widow, Laurie Pepper and her label, Widow's Taste Music, Omnivore Recordings is pleased to release the first volume in a series of previously unissued live recordings by Art Pepper called Neon Art.


    From his early recordings with Stan Kenton's and Shorty Rogers' bands and sessions with Chet Baker, Henry Mancini or Quincy Jones, to his own recordings like classics made for Contemporary and Galaxy Records (The Art Pepper Quartet and Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section) Art Pepper built a legacy of recordings that can only be described as legendary. Thankfully, he also left us a narrative, tracing the history of his life and the roadmap with details of his great recordings in the shape of the book, Straight Life, which Art and Laurie authored together.


    The first volume of Neon Art features two tunes drawn from the unissued performances at Parnell's in Seattle, WA on January 28, 1981. Side one features a workout on Art's composition, "Red Car," while side two features "Blues For Blanche," also a Pepper-composed track. Cut at Capitol Records by Ron McMaster and pressed on red vinyl in a see-through jacket, this first volume is aimed at both the longtime Art Pepper aficionado and collector, and to those just coming to know Art's work.     For a quarter century, Dex Romweber has trolled the dark corners and back shelves of the haunted thrift store of Americana ephemera and honed an extraordinarily idiomatic sound, a particular and readily identifiable DEXness for those in the know. It's a creepy doll collection of surf, proto-rockabilly, garage, dark and vengeful blues, and nobody, but nobody, plays it like Dex. First with the legendary Flat Duo Jets and now with his Duo, Dex distilled the punk ethos of less-is-more to the essential guitar/drums template. Left in the wake of his lecherous and slithery Silvertone were early acolytes like Jack White, Neko Case, and the Reigning Sound as well as a current crop of the indie pack like Ty Segall, No Age, Japandroids, and The Black Keys. All owe an unclaimed pawn ticket of debt to his sublime and spine-tingling sound. He is a live wire back to the murky, sometimes dangerous and always unpredictable headwaters of real rock and roll.


    Dex, with his whip-wristed sister Sara Romweber on drums, take Images 13 through neon-lit alleys, full of pulp fiction juvey rock, sci-fi theme songs and greasy denim hipster jive. Effortlessly versatile and raucously dismissive of genre constraints, exciting and darkly romantic, Images 13 would make everyone from Duane Eddy to Stan Kenton to Lenny Bruce crack a smile, a joke or the seal on a fifth of rye and head for the Naugahyde ice bucket.


    Recorded at Rick Miller's (Southern Culture on the Skids) Kudzu Ranch studio in North Carolina, the album bristles with a sense of drama, of tension, of release, of mystery. "Roll On" and "Long Battle Coming" display the cinematic sleaze nestled between The Cramps and West Side Story. Eerie ballads "Baby I Know What It's Like to be Alone" and "I Don't Want to Listen" reveal the crooning, bruised romantic, the harsh morning light of a strange hotel room, a Raymond Chandler novel on the bedside table. "Beyond the Moonlight" is part sea shanty longing and part campfire revival. Then, just as easily, the instrumentals take center stage. "Blackout!" updates Henry Mancini's Peter Gunn theme with a dynamic tension and sly cool, and Dex and Sara attack the big waves off Maui with a chaotic rush on "Blue Surf" - his guitar guiding you into the sweet spot of the pipeline and her drums pounding you into the sand. Hey Tarantino, wake up!


    Digging into the skeleton-filled rock 'n' roll closet, Dex Romweber Duo comes up with some obscure and wonderful gems. The early Who track "So Sad About Us," featuring Mary Huff (SCOTS) on vocals, hits an uncharacteristically sunny power pop vibe. The hopeful "We'll Be Together Again" written by Eddie Cochran's girlfriend Sharon Sheeley about his death in a car accident (that she and Gene Vincent survived). The song was never released formally but recorded by Jackie DeShannon in the early '60s. Finishing up the album is the music of Harry Lubin, who did theme music for shows like The Outer Limits and One Step Beyond. "Weird (Aurora Borealis)" is the music from the latter when ghosts, UFO's, or odd paranormal experiences begin to rear their strange heads, complete with tribal drums and Melissa Swingle (Trailer Bride, The Moaners) on the saw.


    Flat Duo Jets - so often emulated, so rarely duplicated - released the first of nine albums in 1990 to rave reviews worldwide. They starred, alongside R.E.M. and The B-52s, in the 1987 cult classic film Athens, GA: Inside/Out. Their first national tour in 1990 was as opening act for The Cramps and they made a stunning impression on Late Night with David Letterman. Dex Romweber Duo's first record Ruins of Berlin featured guest appearances by Neko Case, Cat Power, and Exene Cervenka. Dex was name-checked by Jack White in the guitar superstar documentary It Might Get Loud, and the Duo recorded a single and live album with White for his label Third Man Records in 2009. Subsequently, the Duo has shared the stage with dozens of rock icons including Wanda Jackson, Cat Power, Neko Case, and The White Stripes. In 2012, the documentary about Dex's sometimes harrowing career Two Headed Cow was released.
