    Tawk Tomahawk

Hiatus Kaiyote is the sound of serendipity. Every so often a band comes along that captures the collective imagination, a band that has all the essential elements in place to become a musical movement.

The music of Hiatus Kaiyote strikes the perfect note merging poetry and polyrhythms. Hiatus Kaiyote has a style that can't be easily pinpointed. Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, Tupac Shakur, Flying Lotus, traditional flamenco and music from Mali and Colombia have influenced the group. We could call it 'Future Soul'.

On the band's debut album Tawk Tomahawk (2012) it's as if the vast desert landscape has opened up, borrowing ingredients from far-reaching lands to concoct a distinctive flavor that is the essence of all its parts. Each song whispers of delicious, ancient stories untold.

Stereogum singled out Hiatus Kaiyote as a Band to Watch. Gilles Peterson named them the Breakthrough Artist of 2013. Questlove and Erykah Badu have gone out of their way to promote the band. There's been so much support from the community of musicians locally and internationally. As a musician that's what it's about, as lead singer Nai Palm put it. Q-Tip lends his voice for a collaborative verse on Nakamarra.

Milo Goes to College is the first full-length album by the American punk rock band the Descendents. Its title referred to singer Milo Aukerman's decision to leave the band to attend college, and its cover illustration introduced a caricature of him that would go on to become the band's mascot. It was the Descendents' last record with founding guitarist Frank Navetta, who quit the band during the hiatus that followed its release.

The Feelies' fourth album Time For A Witness (1991) found the band honing their sound and getting a bit heavier, anticipating the grunge-era that Nirvana would herald in in six months after this album was released. This was Down's first album in seven years since the release of NOLA, the longest gap between the band's Four studio albums to date. Since Down was a supergroup, the band went on hiatus in 1996 so that members could focus on their main bands (namely Eyehategod, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar and Pantera). Down reformed in 1999 with Pantera bassist Rex Brown replacing Todd Strange. The band wanted the album to have a bluesy feel, so they moved into Phil Anselmo's barn, dubbed Nödferatu's Lair, in southern Louisiana where they lived and recorded the album in 28 days without anyone leaving the house.

Gone Troppo, issued on Dark Horse Records in November 1982, would prove to be Harrison s last studio album for five years, during which he largely took an extended hiatus from his recording career. The album title, Gone Troppo, was an Australian slang expression meaning 'gone mad/crazy' and also a reference to the Italian term 'non troppo', used in tempo markings and meaning 'not too much'. Billboard said of Gone Troppo: 'Harrison's sunny lyricism shines brightest when least encumbered by self-consciousness, and here that equation yields a breezy, deceptively eclectic charmer.'

Two Gallants, the San Francisco folk-punk duo prone to accidents and police raids, spent roughly four years on hiatus before making this album. You might suspect their primary motivation was staying in one piece and out of the slammer. But the time apart also had an unintended, quite positive consequence: It gave childhood friends Adam Stephens and Tyson Vogel time to recharge their batteries and come back with their most cohesive set of music yet. Now signed to Dave Matthews' ATO Records, the group that got its start playing impromptu shows outside the 16th Street BART Station still retains its scrappy charm, whether pounding through fuzzy, primal ditties such as Song of Songs or making like Dylan on the gorgeous ballad Broken Eyes. Here's hoping they survive the promotion cycle.

Other than four piano solos from April 4, 1962, this set was pianist Bill Evans' first recordings after a hiatus caused by bassist Scott LaFaro's tragic death in a car accident. The first of two meetings on record in a duo format with guitarist Jim Hall, the collaborations are often exquisite. Both Evans and Hall had introspective and harmonically advanced styles along with roots in hard-swinging bebop. The six selections on the original LP have been expanded to ten for this reissue with the inclusion of two alternate takes and previously unheard versions of Stairway to the Stars and I'm Getting Sentimental Over You. There is more variety than expected on the fine set with some cookers, ballads, waltzes, and even some hints at classical music. Recommended.

It's now more than a decade since Edenbridge first created a stir with the launch of their debut Sunrise In Eden back in 2000. What presented itself as a young but already immensely talented band has evolved into one of the genre's most independent acts. Their latest album The Bonding sees the group from Austria
underline their exceptional status in melodic metal and puts an end to their creative hiatus of almost three difficult years. "We had to come to terms with a number of personal setbacks, which is why the production of the album took longer than originally scheduled," explains guitarist and main songwriter Lanvall, who among other things suffered the loss of his father due to suicide. In addition, Edenbridge underwent an unexpected line-up change: bassist Simon Holzknecht had to be replaced by Wolfgang Rothbauer (Disbelief, Zombie Inc.).

Backspace Unwind is the long awaited new LAMB album. The sixth album of the electronic music duo contains 10 new songs written by Andy Barlow & Lou Rhodes with 4 featuring string arrangements by Tom Trapp, who also conducted the string section for the recording session at Air Lyndhurst Studios in London.

'Making this album has been a journey of discovery in so many ways', says Lou. 'After making music together over a period of almost 20 years (with a 5 year hiatus to take a breath) it's reassuring that new routes and approaches seem to abound. Over those years I think we've learnt that this journey needs no map; in fact tearing that map up, at every twist and turn, has become our regular gleeful practice.'
