    Hollywood Town Hall

Hollywood Town Hall found a finely balanced point -- accessible enough for should-have-been success but bowing to no trends. Olson and Louris' great
harmonies that are the core of things, giving songs like Crowded in the Wings and Settled Down Like Rain a high-and-lonesome sparkle.

    Tomorrow The Green Grass

On Tomorrow the Green Grass, the Jayhawks found themselves in the tricky situation of trying to match the quality of Hollywood Town Hall without simply repeating themselves, and they came remarkably close to achieving that daunting task. Rather than simply mimic the warm and unaffected sound of Hollywood Town Hall, the Jayhawks reached for a broader and more eclectic approach on Tomorrow the Green Grass; with the presence of new keyboard player Karen Grotberg and the addition of strings on several tracks, the album certainly sounded fuller and more artful, but Mark Olson and Gary Louris' harmonies were still the band's secret weapon, and were as pure and emotionally compelling as ever, while Louris' electric guitar solos gave the songs real rock & roll muscle without disturbing the essentially gentle nature of their music. And the best songs on Tomorrow the Green Grass are every bit as good as anything on Hollywood Town Hall, especially the opening hat trick of Blue, I'll Run Away, and Miss Williams' Guitar (the latter a joyous love letter to Olson's new bride, Victoria Williams). But while nearly every song on Hollywood Town Hall seemed like a classic in context, the greater stylistic variety of Tomorrow the Green Grass had the consequence of making a few of the songs in the second half of the album seem less than essential, most notably Ann Jane and Pray for Me, though they hardly counted as disappointments, and the album rallies to a rousing finale with Ten Little Kids. If Hollywood Town Hall is inarguably the Jayhawks' best album, Tomorrow the Green Grass runs a very close second, and though it was to be the group's last album with Mark Olson, the eclectic approach pointed the way to the sound and style of the fine records the Louris-led version of the band would go on to make.

    Smile

180 Gram Remastered Vinyl With Bonus Tracks

    First Time On Vinyl!

With Smile, the Jayhawks drop yet another sizable chunk of their alt-country sound by the roadside, adding in its place healthy doses of power pop and
modern electronic music. Almost half of Smile's songs feature looped percussion, overdubbed drum tracks, or flat-out, funky backbeats. Despite the
modern touches, though, the fact remains that Smile retains just enough of a distinctly Americana feeling. On the warm and twangy Better Days, one of
Louris' best songs, he sings with genuine regret and heartache the way he treated a long ago lover, and on Break in the Clouds he celebrates the
comforts of domestic contentment, complete with pedal steel and soaring harmonies that recall the band's landmark work Hollywood Town Hall from
1992. What never changes on the Jayhawks' albums, it seems, are the blissful melodies and well-constructed tunes. This remastered edition includes
    bonus tracks.

    Paging Mr. Proust

Paging Mr. Proust finds the 2016 Jayhawks still remain one of America's foremost rock bands: based around leader Gary Louris' gift for melody that has made them such a respected and seminal group for almost three decades. Paging Mr. Proust features the long-time core of the Jayhawks: Gary Louris (lead vox/guitars), Marc Perlman (bass), Tim O'Reagan (drums/vox), and Karen Grotberg (keyboards/vox).

From the jangle of album opener "Quiet Corners & Empty Spaces" to the trademark harmonies of "Isabel's Daughter" to the more pensive "Lover Of The Sun", it is clear that The Jayhawks' power remains undiminished from their initial national impact, 1992's Hollywood Town Hall. Other tracks such as the sludgy rocker "Lost The Summer", the kraut-rock groove of "Ace" and the taut minimalism of "Comeback Kids" bring new sounds to the palette. Paging Mr. Proust shows a commitment to adventure and forward motion, which makes this collection of songs exciting and instantly memorable.

    1. Quiet Corners & Empty Spaces
    2. Lost the Summer

    The Phosphorescent Blues

\After working with Burnett numerous times-most recently on the soundtrack for the Joel and Ethan Coen film Inside Llewyn Davis and the related Town Hall/Showtime concert Another Day, Another Time-Punch Brothers decided to join forces with the multiple Grammy Award-winning producer for their new record. Last summer, the band and Burnett spent a month at Hollywood's Ocean Way Recording laying down the songs that guitarist Chris Eldridge, bassist Paul Kowert, banjo player Noam Pikelny, mandolinist and lead singer Chris Thile, and fiddler Gabe Witcher had written during several writing "retreats" last winter and spring.

Thile explains one of the ways the music on The Phosphorescent Blues reflects the band's view of modern life: "We often go to bars after shows or writing sessions, to be around other people for a little while. And I'd see people just like me on their phones, telling people they wish they were there, texting people who really are there. Then a song would come on that somebody likes and then they see that someone else does too and maybe they both sing it together and that moment is spiritual, some shared experience, and they are interacting in the flesh, with their fellow man. And that's communion. Many of the songs on this record dive into that: how do we cultivate beautiful, three-dimensional experiences with our fellow man in this day and age?"

Shortly before the sessions began, Thile and Witcher met with Burnett and discovered the producer had the very same things on his mind. In fact, he'd just given a commencement address at the University of Southern California on the subject of technology and human interaction. Witcher remembers, "Thile and I looked at each and said, 'This is unbelievable. It's exactly what we are writing about.' So this was a perfect, serendipitous union."
