    Why Make Sense?

Hot Chip's new album, Why Make Sense?, restates the band's intentions and redefines the very
things that made them relevant in the first place. Its ten tracks shun modernist dancefloor tropes in
order to flick through the dusty corners of the band's teenage record collections, back when they
were experimenting with music on primitive computer programmes. This, their sixth album, comes on
the back of the highly successful In Our Heads and a touring period that saw them headline venues
such as the iconic Hollywood Bowl and close out major festivals the world over.

Why Make Sense? represents the first time the Hot Chip live band has recorded together residentially.
The result is a revelation. Alternately jarring and chaotic, pared back, thundering, then pulsating and
gloriously mellifluous, the album confidently displays its influences: clattering analogue post-punk
('Why Make Sense?'), Philly disco ('Dark Night'), and outer-space acid dub ('Easy To Get'). The crisp,
snapping '90s RnB of "Love Is The Future" calls in guest spots from De La Soul's Posdnuos and
Scritti Politti's Green Gartside on vocals and arrangements respectively. The record even eschews
Alexis' vocals in favour of a carefully chosen sample that adds huge clout to the emotionally charged
core of the album, 'Need You Now.'

Master Mix: Red Hot + Arthur Russell

Master Mix' embodies the genre-defying, experimental spirit that defined Russell's work. Living in the East Village from the '70s until his untimely death in 1992 at age 40 from AIDS-related causes, Russell moved effortlessly between the city's various music scenes, recording disco beats alongside Nicky Siano one night, and the next, crafting slow, haunting tracks in his apartment with his cello and idiosyncratic warbling voice. The New Yorker called his work "stranded between lands real and imagined: the street and the cornfield; the soft bohemian New York and the hard Studio 54 New York; the cheery bold strokes of pop and the liberating possibilities of abstract art." Through his collaborations, he earned the admiration of artists like Allen Ginsberg, David Byrne and Philip Glass, who said of Russell's music: "It does not submit to formula, but subverts the formula." The record features 26 tracks by more than 20 artists, including Hot Chip, Sufjan Stevens, Phosphorescent, Blood Orange, The Autumn Defense and Lonnie Holley, paying homage to Russell's boundless creativity and wide-ranging work, which swerved from electronic dance to folk to classical and resulted in what NPR hails as "catchy and hypnotic records that were far ahead of their time."

    Await Barbarians

We are pleased to announce the release of Alexis Taylor's second solo album and first for
    Domino, Await Barbarians!

Taylor's (lead singer of Hot Chip) newest solo effort, Await Barbarians, is a series of songs
"from the halfway line." Possessing the same immediacy as his music with Hot Chip and the
adventurousness of his work with About Group, there is a special intimacy to these lyrics,
a simplicity and candour in his expression of emotion that brings to mind the best singer-songwriter records from Laurel Canyon, though as always with Taylor the moments of
honesty are matched with a sense of humour, playfulness and fun.

Await Barbarians follows Taylor's EP from last year, Nayim From The Halfway Line. Alexis
will be in the US for press and shows in NYC & LA to support his new solo album, while he
takes part in Atomic Bomb! The Music Of William Onyeabor tribute shows w/ David Byrne,

    SUM/ONE

bEEdEEgEE is the performing alias of Brian DeGraw, an American artist, musician and producer who lives and works between the inner city
and the Catskill region of New York state. Most commonly known in the
music world for his work at the center of the experimental electronic
act Gang Gang Dance and their musical mastery, SUM/ONE is his debut
    record as a solo artist.

Written and recorded over the course of a year in his Woodstock studio,
the W0RMB1N, SUM/ONE initially began life when Brian left New York
City - his home for the past twelve years - for the clouds of Woodstock.
Amidst the peace of this new environment, the audio sketches he
worked on gradually evolved into a project that fuses the deep synth
soundscapes with audacious pop moments that characterise Gang Gang
Dance. The nine tracks that comprise SUM/ONE also feature the vocal
talents of Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), Lovefoxxx (CSS),
Lizzi Bougatsos (Gang Gang Dance) and Douglas Armour.

    Cells

Four years and four EPs on, Keating is still something of an enigma. He doesn't prey on fame, he does very few interviews and he isn't part of a DJ crew: he has always preferred to let his music speak for itself. He's been in no hurry to release a record either - until now, that is. Keating has found a home on Different Recordings, which counts club crusaders like Tiga, Felix Da Housecat and Vitalic among its roster, and is finally ready to present his mission statement: Cells.

An album is such a personal manifesto, he says, of why he has waited until now to release Cells, and, in some ways, I didn't feel as if I'd earned that. I hadn't got their full attention yet. He should, however, give himself more credit. Since Mars, Keating has released another chart-nudging single, I Think I Like It, remixed with everyone from Hot Chip and Gossip to Calvin Harris and Sway, produced three memorable mixes for Radio 1 and appeared on huge party bills with the biggest names in dance music. He has also started a label, Blood Music, and has hosted its showcases at Social Club in Paris and London's Fabric. And he has just dropped a new EP, Yes/No, to ready fans for his debut long-player. The world, as it happens, is bloodthirstily waiting: Cells is one of the most anticipated dance albums of 2012.

It's a daring one at that. Cells is an 11-track distillation of Keating's surreal vision, an electronic masterpiece skewered by his love of the macabre, the uncanny and the sinister. He has trapped his signature breed of savage, Godzilla-strength basslines and laser-blazing four-to-the-floor inside his very own suspense thriller.

    Pinata

Nacional Records is excited to announce the vinyl release of Mexican Institute of Sound's (M.I.S.) critically acclaimed,
DJ-favorite albums 'Politico,' 'Pinata,' 'Mejico Maxico and 'Soy Sauce.'

Pinata proves to be the perfect title for the sophomore disc from Mexican Institute of Sound. It's got more colorful grooves and sweet surprises than you can shake, or swing, a stick at. One-man programming band Camilo Lara stuffs the disc with quirky samples and buoyant choruses that are decidedly Mexican but could reflect life from any corner of the globe. It's an electro-Technicolor take on world music. Killer Kumbia and Para No Vivir Desesperado come to life via chirpy cumbia grooves, as does much of the disc; and Lara effectively samples rock outfit CafÉ Tacuba during El Microfono. Lara's approach here is alternately serious and silly, combining nonsensical chatter with sly social statements. A Todos Ellos namechecks a long list of pop-culture icons, from Rocio Jurado, Sonny Bono, and R.L. Burnside, to Cantinflas, Ol' Dirty Bastard, and Oscar Wilde. The second half of the disc showcases more club-friendly grooves, and Pinata stand strong as an intriguing collection of pop revelry. - Joey Guerra

    XX

The XX arrive with their debut album XX, a whole new sound of love, loss and longing. The XX are a London quartet, featuring the dual lead vocals of Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim (who also play lead guitar and bass guitar), Baria Qureshi (keyboards and guitar) and Jamie Smith (beats, MPC sampler). These four twenty year olds are childhood friends who formed while attending southwest London's Elliot School, an academy whose alumni also includes such acclaimed boundary-pushers as Burial, Four Tet and Hot Chip. Bonding over a shared love of dark, emotive '80s guitar sounds and the high-end sheen of American R&B, The XX's unique sound befits a band whose wide range of influences include everything from Aaliyaah to Cocorosie, Rihanna to The Cure, Missy Elliot to The Chromatics and Mariah Carey to The Pixies.

In an effort not to draw too much distance from the DIY aesthetic of their early demos, which were recorded in their bedrooms, they recorded their debut album XX under no one's watch, other than engineer Rodaidh McDonald, at XL Recordings' west London in-house studio. The result is a wash of sexy, coy, and sparse rhythms and melodies the likes of Robert Smith, Massive Attack and The Streets.

Vinyl also die cut with bonus track cover of Hot Like Fire.

    Be Slowly

2013 saw the barely legal four piece distinguish themselves as one of the hardest working bands in the biz, releasing a steady stream of hook-laden, increasingly impressive and artful singles that have been featured in the unlikely cross section from Made In Chelsea to Match Of The Day, touring across the UK several times, and playing country-wide sold out shows to devoted audiences who sing back the lyrics to by now familiar favourites. The closing chapter to the year saw the band enter the studio with producer Dreamtrak [Foals, Swim Deep, Hot Chip] to record their debut album Be Slowly. Lead vocalist, and song writer, Connor Schofield said about the record: It's called Be Slowly because it just has a nice ring to it - even though it makes no grammatical sense what-so-ever. It basically means take a breather, theres no rush. I think a lot of people, especially myself build stuff up and start to panic. Its just a bit of a reminder that there is actually time to take it easy, and to do things step by step.

    Between The Walls

    Heavyweight Gatefold Vinyl

Between The Walls is the third album by About Group, the quartet of
John Coxon [Spiritualized], Charles Hayward [THIS HEAT], Alexis Taylor
[Hot Chip] and Pat Thomas, and will be released through Domino
    Recording Co. on July 02!

Between The Walls captures the sound of a band 'playing' together, in
both senses of the word - experimenting and trying things, being
playful, as much as being a group performing as a unit together. The
album is the sound of people pushing towards and pulling against one
another simultaneously. It is the sound of buzzing amplifiers, sudden
musical non-sequiturs, loud blasts of straight synth lines cutting through
melody and structure. And it is also the sound of beautiful and odd
electronic textures and brilliantly defined and deliberate drums, underpining fragile but deliberate performances of sad songs and country
    ballads.

The sense of the unexpected runs through Between The Walls. Not an
improvised album and certainly not just a set of songs the record is a
document of creative experimentation given free reign.

    Olympia

Olympia is an album of transformation. Though it has only been two years since Austra's 2010 debut
Feel It Break, it presents a quantum evolution in the Toronto-based band's sound, structure and style.

After three years of non-stop international touring with the likes of The xx, Grimes and the Gossip,
when it came time to record Olympia, Austra had evolved into a complex collaborative effort between
its six members. "Previously, I would flesh out songs before I brought them to the band, but this time
I left them bare and let the others fill them in" explains Katie Stelmanis, the principal songwriter/vocalist.

Olympia is also the first confessional record for Stelmanis as evidenced by the heartfelt lyrics of piano
driven lead single "Home." The album touches on a range of sentiments that stem from a relationship
ending, a relationship beginning, and friends' struggles with addiction and motivation. Despite the
sometimes dark lyrics written in collaboration with band member Sari Lightman, Olympia is bubbly
and buoyant- fundamentally a dance record, which Stelmanis says was the band's aim all along. "We
are really into dense harmonies and big beautiful melodies, but I also love techno and dance music. I
wanted to bring those elements together."

Though Olympia is filled with electronic and synthetic sounds that reference everything from Trax
Record classic cuts to Yazoo's Upstairs At Eric's, it's free of programming and loops. Everything was
played live by the band in the studio and all of the percussion including a wild set up of marimbas and
congas performed by drummer Maya Postepski. "There is a major percussive element running through
every song," Stelmanis laughs, "this is the album where we discovered rhythm."

The album was produced by Austra with additional production by Mike Haliechuk (Fucked Up)

Vocal production by Damian Taylor (Bjork, the Killers)

Engineered by Leon Taheny and Bill Skibbe (the Kills, Wild Belle,
    Dead Weather)

Mixed by Tom Elmhirst (Adele, Erasure, Hot Chip).

    Politico

Nacional Records is excited to announce the vinyl release of Mexican Institute of Sound's (M.I.S.) critically acclaimed,
DJ-favorite albums 'Politico,' 'Pinata,' 'Mejico Maxico and 'Soy Sauce.'

Politico, the fifth full-length album by Mexican Institute of Sound (producer and songwriter Camilo Lara) is an album that almost wasn't. In 2011, an enormous amount of the explosive C4 was discovered next door to Lara's residence -- it was set to be detonated; by whom and for what purpose was never determined. In a recent interview, Lara said that he didn't deliberately set out to go into politics, but that politics had come to his house. These 13 songs, composed and assembled by Lara, address the chaos, destruction, tragedy, and violence that have become all-too-familiar elements in Mexican lives. Politico is a statement in the same way that the Clash's Sandinista! or the Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks were, but it isn't nostalgic. Nor is it sonically similar to either. Longtime fans of MIS may have some initial issues because there are vocals on almost every tune. But not only do they not they detract from the set's appeal, their urgent expressions add to it. While the topical nature of these songs is undeniable, it doesn't mean this isn't a fun record. Quite the opposite. Lara isn't didactic in his lyrics; these are personal observations, and in that way, carry more weight than slogans. His unique compositional style makes them musically irresistible, and compelling. He uses Mexico's and Latin America's folk forms -- cumbias, descargas, sons, corridos, mariachis, bandas, rancheras, cha-chas, rhumbas, pachangas, and more -- and hard welds them to slamming beats, layered melodies, and infectious keyboard grooves, all via a staggering yet organic-sounding mÉlange of samples from rock & roll, hip-hop, funk, house, disco, techno, etc. Check the wild marimba samples that introduce the melody to Tipo Raro, which originally appeared in the film Made in Mexico. Lara retains the melody throughout, but busts it from its context; he runs head-on into multi-tracked Farfisa organs, a deeply distressed beat, four-on-the-floor loops, rapping, and a brittle bassline that fires directly from the center. Especulando is a driving, funky electro jam. Es-Toy uses accordion and darkly tinged double trombones (à la Willie Colón), a pulsing organ, and chanted vocals. Despite its skittering dance beat and its mariachi horns, Más is pure, frenetic punk rock. Politico is easily the most sophisticated record in the MIS catalog. This is political music without apology; it's also frenzied dance party music that's virtually peerless. - Thom Jurek (All Music Guide)

M.I.S. tours the world performing at major festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza, with a wide range of
high-profile television and videogame uses, including HBO 'Entourage' & 'East Bound & Down,' as well as
'Californication' and videogames like EA Sports' 'FIFA' and the new 'Grand Theft Auto V', for which he curated
one of the radio stations 'East Los FM.'

The sound of old Mexican cumbias, boleros and mariachi tunes scrambled with samples, effects and beats.

    The Age of Fracture

The long-awaited new album from CYMBALS is named after a book by Princeton academic, Daniel T. Rodgers, which addresses the fragmentation of ideas towards the end of the last century and how collective meanings have become uncertain. Singer and guitarist Jack Cleverly writes: It hit me that I often feel paralysed by the feeling that everything is 'too complicated', and that many people I know feel that paralysis. I realised that this way of thinking can be traced through these songs. Produced by Dreamtrak (Swim Deep, Chad Valley, Hot Chip) in his Hackney studio and written collectively over the last 12-months, the group have taken their time to carefully piece the album together, song-by-song, in sequence. The album was completed following a final mix from Daniel Rejmer (Foals, Everything Everything) and the result is testament to the band s attention to detail: a cleaner, brighter sound than their brattier early recordings, edging towards the European sophistication of the end-of-the-century French house Jack grew up around. Singles 'Like An Animal', 'The End' and 'The Natural World' are characterized by an upbeat disco cool and all push the 7-minute mark, whereas Winter 98 , This City , and Call Me are brooding, stark synth-led numbers reminiscent of early-New Order, with some lyrics sung in Jack s native French. The literary inspiration runs further through the album. The track The 5% , more obviously making reference to the themes of the album's namesake, declares Time can be erased, you re stupid if you try and stay in place, over a pulsing bassline and swirling electronics. Like an Animal is inspired by the intellectual and moral confusion of the main character in Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain. The album has even garnered literary responses of its own by British poet and novelist Joe Dunthorne, author of Submarine. I told Joe about the book and the way the album was kind of a reaction to it, and he threw my rationalisation of it back at me through a short story inspired by the album. says Cleverly. It helped reveal the emotional territory of the songs. He showed me how I had been dividing things up artificially - desires and priorities, getting older and not being able to stop writing music... Through the writing of this album, CYMBALS have inevitably matured. We've never been in it just for a laugh, says Cleverly; but things got confused when we said we wanted to keep it fun we just didn't want to end up bitter, having chased a hollow dream. But this album is less about us; it's more outward looking, more aware of the world at large. Despite the weighty literary influences, the band are keen to separate themselves from the over-earnestness that can sometimes accompany such associations. I hate the whole 'serious earnest-singer-songwriter-thing, says Jack. With this album I really wanted to get away from that and make music that makes people want to dance and feel joy. Neil's kick drum is the most important thing we have to say as a band. Is this all fun? Yes, of course, but at the same time, not just that. Produced by Dreamtrak & mixed by Daniel Rejmer.

    Chromatics

When songwriter and producer Sam Genders last donned his Diagrams hat, captive listeners found themselves truly stunned by the Streatham Hill artist's imaginative and inventive arrangements that made up 2012s debut album Black Light. Having now upped sticks from his London lodgings and settled in Sheffield with a new lease of life and wife, fresh pastures and friendships are what form the heart of Diagrams' brand new album Chromatics.

"Relationships are a constant thread. In all their frustrating, exciting, mundane, beautiful, wonderful, sexy, scary glory," reveals Genders of the album's themes. "And there's lots of hope in the songs. They shouldn't be taken too literally mind you in my head Chromatics is life in Technicolor; with all its ups and downs."

Equally drawing inspiration from the writing on relationships by David Schnarch, Ester Perel and the book Division Street by Sheffield poet Helen Mort, whilst spending time in his own home studio for the first time, it's without doubt that the Steel city provided the ideal backdrop for Genders to write whenever the inspiration came and, essentially, whittle down the fifty or so tracks he had recorded as part of the album's creation. "There are woods over the road and a little garden out the back with a greenhouse, shed, and flower beds. Being in a new place has brought something special to the process. Sheffield is a very open and direct place and I'd say the songs are more that way too."

Whilst Black Light fizzed with electronic effects, synth-bass, programmed beats and low-key funk grooves that brought about comparisons to the leftfield pop of Arthur Russell, Metronomy, Steve Mason and Hot Chip, it's without doubt that Genders' next offering falls closer to home comforts and marks the next step in Genders' renaissance. Take lead track 'Phantom Power'; it's the track which truly sums up what it's like to find yourself forever reassessing. "It's about feeling like you're losing a grip on your sanity at one moment, then feeling inspired and up for anything the next. Or frustration with yourself yet believing that it's possible to sort yourself out," explains Genders. Elsewhere 'You Can Talk To Me's delicate rolling melody and 'Serpent' once again showcase the playful, eclectic slant to Genders' songwriting prowess alongside an innate sense of crisp production and programming techniques.

Never one to shirk away from those around him, Genders would be the first to call Diagrams, and particularly Chromatics, a collaborative process. Once again featuring a rolling cast of inspirational musicians the album includes vocals from, amongst friends and family members, The Smoke Fairies whilst the skilled brass and string arrangements come courtesy of Danyal Dhondy and Sam Ewens. 'London's greatest' drummers Karl Penney, and Cacophony drummer Fletcher Adams provide the beats whilst live band members Emma Black and Ben Malitskie lend their expertise of Baritone Saxophone and Viola. 'Brain' meanwhile, was co-written with long-time friend and collaborator Matt McKenzie and features an in utero recording of his son James' heartbeat.

Yet it's the partnership with producer Leo Abrahams (Wild Beasts, David Byrne, Brian Eno, Jon Hopkins, Ed Harcourt, Marianne Faithful et al) that has truly brought Diagrams to life. After a long search, Abrahams was picked to piece all parts together and as a result Genders found himself writing songs that worked across a variety of production styles. "Leo's incredibly good at what he does and virtually all the impressive production and soundscaping is down to him. He's also an amazing guitarist and played some of my favourite guitar moments on the album."

Who knows exactly what kind of relationships will inspire Genders next? Currently finding himself midst China's south central city of Changsha in Hunan as a Musician in Residence on behalf of the British Council and PRS foundation, life for Genders right now is all about new experiences, meeting new faces and learning from new friendships. "It feels like anything could happen from one day to the next. I'd like to record a Chinese version of 'Phantom Power' so that once I'm back in the UK I can reconnect with the music lovers I've met. I've heard lots of very poppy pop songs that incorporate both Chinese and English lyrics so I'd like to try my own twist on that."

    Bus Stop

No rest for the Hollies in 1966! Hot on the heels of Beat Group!, Bus Stop rolled into U.S. record shops, right on schedule. Written by Gouldman, the title track became the bands first Top Ten U.S. single, peaking at #5, and featuring their bell-tone harmonies to perfection. In addition to the sparkling single, the album is packed with their renditions of contemporary hits like Simon and Garfunkel's I Am A Rock, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' Mickey's Monkey' and the Fred Neil/Roy Orbison chestnut Candy Man. Self-penned songs We're Through, Don't Run and Hide and You Know He Did also shine brightly and prove there was no danger of covering up the band members writing skills. With this disc, the Hollies put the rock world on notice that they were the British Invasions most beat-filled battalion!

Out of print for decades, this classic album is FINALLY available again. Sourced from the aurally awesome original U.K. mono master, this LP is pressed on pristine 180-gram vinyl per your turntables request. Get in the queue!

Perhaps the most undervalued band of the original British Invasion, The Hollies hits are well known in the U.S. but their early albums are almost impossible to find! Taking their name from Buddy Holly and modeling their harmonies on the Everly Brothers, the Hollies gathered these American musical ingredients and whipped them into a wholly-UKnique concoction. Forging their sound to the east of their Liverpool brothers-in-beat, this Manchester quintet had it all: the soaring vocals of Allan Clarke, Graham Nash and Tony Hicks; Hicks cascading, arpeggio-laden licks on guitar and a hard-hitting rhythm section driven by drummer extraordinaire Bobby Elliot. On top of that, their keen ears for top quality songs, written by the premier songsmiths of the day like teenage wunderkind Graham Gouldman, Chip Wild Thing Taylor and the stellar in-house writing team of Clarke/Hicks/Nash, ensured that their albums were extraordinary from start to finish. In short, they were a band that exuded greatness on all fronts. Now, as that greatness has been acknowledged by their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Sundazed Music is proud to present meticulously restored vinyl editions of the rare U.S. mono versions of the Hollies third and fourth Imperial label albums, from 1966.

Recording with a core group featuring Al Doyle (Hot Chip/LCD Soundsystem) on bass and guitar Rob Smoughton (Hot Chip/Grovesnor) on drums and guitar and Kenny Dickenson (KT Tunstall/Red Ken) on keys, Seahawks invited some of their favourite singers to contribute vocals. Maria Minerva, Tim Burgess, Indra Dunis of Peaking Lights and missing-in-action psychedelic songsmith Nick Nicely all added their unmistakeable tones. A set of final overdubs from Tom Furse (The Horrors) and some tinkering from Seahawks' regular Cornish musical mates sealed the deal. The whole process took time but what is time when faced with the epic expanse of the cosmos - a cosmos full of soft tones and brilliant corners, unexpected collisions, warm openings, deep colours and fresh textures.
