Mark William Lanegan is an American alternative rock musician and singer-songwriter.

'The Pilgrims' is an intriguing mix of dark blues vocal, swinging percussion and post-punk guitar, 'I'll Go Where You Send Me''s alt-Americana wouldn't feel out of place on a David Lynch record and 'Blind' is a fine example of slow-paced psychedelic heaviness that fits in neither period of his canon but provides a neat keystone to keep the whole thing as neatly balanced as it can be. It all finishes with the strangest duo of songs; 'A Suite For Dying Love''s coda is as joyously uplifting as anything that he's ever been involved in, while closer 'Way To Tomorrow' (featuring a truly mighty vocal performance) is as bleak and despondent as you could hope for from his Dark Mark persona. - Si Forster, echoesanddust.com

    Dispossession

Drown is Texas music taken to the limit. The heat fries your brain down there, turning you into a twisted riff monster with no regard for listener safety. Pushing hardcore to more abusive and pummeling lengths with each song they write, the band's newest effort, Dispossession, solidifies these Houston natives as true gatekeepers of hell. Surprises

Surprises is a beautiful Soul Jazz album by flutist Herbie Mann, featuring singer Cissy Houston. Released on Atlantic Records in 1976, the album peaked at #32 on the Billboard Jazz Album chart, #56 on the Billboard R&B Album chart, and #178 on the Billboard 200.

Emily Cissy Houston (born September 30, 1933) is an American Soul and Gospel singer. After a successful career singing backup for (albums of) such artists as Wilson Pickett, Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, Van Morrison, Donnie Hathaway, Paul Simon and Aretha Franklin, she embarked on a solo career, winning two Grammy Awards for her work. She is the mother of the late Whitney Houston, aunt of Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick, and a cousin of opera singer Leontyne Price.

On September 29, 2014, at 81 years old, Cissy sang backup to a standing-ovation performance with Aretha Franklin of Adele's Rolling in the Deep' and Ain't No Mountain High Enough on the Late Show with David Letterman.

As the '76 liner notes say: Cissy Houston. Only now is she beginning to emerge from her cocoon after so many years with the Drinkards and the Sweet Inspirations. Cissy...is showcased here like a star-in-waiting.

    Half A Native

    Produced By Thom
    Monahan (Peter, Bjorn & John,
    Devendra Banhart And Vetiver)

    Won 2014 Houston Press Music
    Awards For Best Folk/Americana
    And Best Male Vocals

Some places you feel like you only sort of fit in and it is this
theme that permeates Houston based folk rock band Buxton's new aptly
titled album Half A Native. One of the leading lights of an emerging music
scene from a city with a burgeoning youth culture, Buxton have won 2
Houston Press Music Awards as Best Houston Folk/Americana Band as
well as Best Male Vocals (Sergio Trevino).

Their new album ventures into vast sonic territories, sometimes
pairing atmospheric piano with off-kilter electric guitar, blanketed by
Trevino's heart-clenched voice and melancholic but optimistic lyrics.
"We take from a lot of different genres and present it in a way that i think
is most honest for us," Trevino says. "You'll hear rock, folk, country,
ambience, and distortion, all interpreted through us."

Recorded in Los Angeles with Thom Monahan (Peter, Bjorn & John,
Devendra Banhart and Vetiver), the 11 new tracks broadcast a wandering
sound, from the dusty tones of guitar-slinging anthems to lonesome
acoustic affairs that look outward and within. Their latest effort is
music for the search for home; the long journey to find somewhere,
something, or someone that makes everything fall into place.

    Waiting To Exhale Soundtrack

Masterfully Produced And All But One Track Written By Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds

Featured R&B Divas Old School (Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, Chaka Khan) And New School (Whitney Houston, Brandy, Mary J. Blige)

Released In Purple Vinyl (Whitney Houston's Favorite Color)

Waiting to Exhale was a phenomenon on so many levels. First, it was a literary phenomenon, as the 1992 novel launched author Terry McMillan to superstardom. Then, when the feature film based on the book was released in 1995, it became a broader cultural phenomenon-a mainstream Hollywood film focusing on the lives of four African-American women was a genuinely revolutionary act at the time. And, finally, it was a musical phenomenon, as its soundtrack seamlessly blended female R&B divas new school (Whitney Houston, Brandy, Mary J. Blige, etc.) and old school (Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan) in a masterful suite of songs composed and produced by Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds.

Critical and commercial reaction to the soundtrack was over the top; The New York Times deemed the album one of the Top Ten releases of the year, and the record topped the Billboard Pop and R&B charts for five and ten weeks, respectively, spawning the #1 hit singles "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)," "Not Gon' Cry," and "Let It Flow." Yet, because the album came out in 1995 at the height of the CD era, Waiting to Exhale never came out on LP in the U.S., and was released in Europe as a low-budget 2-LP set with both records stuffed inside a single album jacket pocket.

Now, Real Gone Music is releasing this landmark '90s R&B album on vinyl in America for the first time in a limited edition (of 1000) gatefold double-LP package sporting a luminous photo of the movie's four principal actors (Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Lela Rochon, and Loretta Devine) on the inside spread and pristine vinyl pressed in purple (Whitney's favorite color).

Gently pulsating and seductive, Waiting to Exhale is Babyface's masterpiece, one of the great make-out records of all time; now you can get that slow jam groove in the grooves!

    Black Talk!

The young organist Charles Earland converted the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" into an anthem called "Black Talk" and came up with one of the huge soul-jazz hits of the early Seventies. In this album, Earland worked the same magic with two other pop songs, "Aquarius" and "More Today than Yesterday," giving them the urgency and forward movement of R&B but managing to inject them with jazz values. He was greatly aided by a pair of soloists-trumpeter Virgil Jones and tenor saxophonist Houston Person-who added fuel to Earland's fiery concept. Guitarist Melvin Sparks and the quintessential soul jazz drummer Idris Muhammad helped keep the blaze going. It is not coincidence that his blues composition, and Earland himself, were called "The Mighty Burner."

Black Talk! went on to become an enormous hit, spending most of 1970 on the best-seller charts.

Palo Duro's forthcoming LP, Ryou Cannon, is set for release via Columbia Records.

Previously known for fronting the band Gold Beach, Palo Duro's Michael J. Winningham has created a pulsating, technicolor universe with Palo Duro. A project that began in July 2012, Michael reached out to his childhood friend, producer Sam Cohen (Kevin Morby, Benjamin Booker) to continue work on a new Gold Beach record. At 16 years old, Sam helped Michael arrange his first song at a house party in Houston TX. Fast forward many years later and this creative synergy proved to be strong-Instantly, in the studio, exciting and bold ideas emerged. Collaboration and endless possibilities informed the arrangements between Sam, Michael, and keyboardist Carlos Orozco, and a new spirit was born. This was no longer Gold Beach.

Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight

In addition to inciting widespread fan fervor, Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight has drawn overwhelming critical and tastemaker support across the board. Pitchfork claimed, "SCOTT's second studio album, Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight, is the Houston rapper's most concise and cohesive project to date," adding, "He has always been a mood-setter and a vocalist, and he is in full command of the vibe, tone, and mood of this entire project more than ever." Houston Press wrote, "SCOTT's playground is chaos; the pure and unbridled variety that some have tried to emulate live but have ultimately settled for second place," while W Magazine fittingly dubbed him, "Your new rap superhero." Billboard described the album as "his own trap opera," and Rolling Stone profiled him extensively.

Over the course of 14 tracks, TRAVIS threads together an engaging, enthralling, and epic patchwork of anesthetized and apocalyptic production, mind-numbing raps, and glorious hooks punctuated by an A-list cast of collaborators. Kendrick Lamar delivers hard-hitting and hypnotic bars in the middle of "Goosebumps" just before a signature chantable chorus. "The Ends" veers between a haunting hum and a verse-for-verse tandem of our protagonist and Andre 3000 of OutKast. "Way Back" drips into a searing guitar solo as "Sweet Sweet" fires off one of his stickiest hooks to date. By the time The Weeknd and TRAVIS serve up a smooth send-off on "Wonderful," you're in the Trap for life, and you won't want to leave

Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight is finally here, and TRAVIS SCOTT's presence can be felt throughout pop culture louder than ever.

    Labor Of Love

    Previously Unreleased Late 1990s Recordings

200-Gram Vinyl Pressed At Quality Record Pressings

Taj Mahal, Loose And Casual In Informal Recording Sessions With Peers

Taj Performs With Guest Artists: John Dee Holeman, Cool John Ferguson, Cootie Stark And Algia Mae Hinton

Tip-On Gatefold Jacket From Stoughton Printing

The blues live on because the blues give people life, not the other way around. Talk about the blues with Grammy-winning singer-songwriter and composer Taj Mahal, or Tim Duffy, founder of the Music Maker Relief Foundation, and you'll quickly understand how deeply they grasp this. So it's no surprise that their shared love of blues has created a special vinyl-only album release that's got the loose, easy feel of a porch-sitting guitar strum, sipping sweet tea on a warm summer day.

Labor of Love comprises recordings made by Duffy, hanging out with Taj and other artists in a Houston hotel room and during visits to the Music Maker Relief Foundation headquarters in Hillsborough, North Carolina.

Taj and Tim first connected in the mid-1990s as Tim was establishing the foundation. The foundation is dedicated to preserving Southern roots music by directly supporting senior artists in need while documenting their music and sharing their stage and recording talents with the world.

A CD collection released by the foundation featuring Music Maker artists caught Taj's attention. Tim invited Taj to his place in rural Pinnacle, N.C., where he hung out with several of the artists. Taj loved how they played and sang, but he especially loved getting to know their lives and how they made things work.

Not much time passed before a performing tour was launched, with Taj as the headliner. Meanwhile, Tim, sensing an incredibly rich opportunity, was hauling along with the tour, high-end recording gear. He set it up in hotel rooms hoping to capture an impromptu session. One night in Houston, magic happened. A few senior bluesmen, Tim, Taj and the daughter of Katie Mae, immortalized in the Lightin' Hopkins classic Katie Mae Blues hung out together in a hotel room in Houston. Taj picked up an acoustic guitar and started in on classic tunes - Stack-O-Lee, Walking Blues, and more. The tape was rolling.

During the time of the tour, Taj was also visiting during hang-out, barbecue and recording sessions at Music Maker's new North Carolina headquarters in Hillsborough. When the music got going, Taj would play some piano, bass, harp, banjo, mandolin and whatever else was needed.

Now is the time for these immortalized sessions to be heard. So here they are on a solid piece of wax. And what wax it is - a full-on 200-gram vinyl Analogue Productions masterpiece plated and pressed at Quality Record Pressings, maker of the world's best-sounding LPs. Packaged in a Stoughton Printing tip-on gatefold jacket. You won't find a more intimate portrayal of Taj as a freewheeling, fun-loving, always-in-the-pocket sideman.

    Stills

Two years following the release of noise-pop duo Gauntlet Hair's self-titled debut LP, the band have announced a follow-up. Titled Stills, it drops July 16 through Dead Oceans.

A press release notes that the band uprooted themselves from Denver and moved back to their hometown of Chicago since the release of Gauntlet Hair. The move apparently spiralled drummer Craig Nice and singer/guitarist Andy R. into a wave of nostalgia, which ultimately influenced their latest song cycle.

I started listening again to the stuff I would have in my discman in the back of my mom's car, Nice said in a statement. White Zombie, Marilyn Manson - the production on those records is so amazing. Nothing sounds like that anymore.

Recorded by Unknown Mortal Orchestra member Jacob Portrait at his Cave studio in Portland, the LP also apparently takes influence from INXS, Depeche Mode and Whitney Houston's I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me), and diffuses all that into a garden of dark delights.

Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins, a true poet who invented most of his lyrics on the spot and never seemed to run out of new ideas, was a blues giant of post-war blues whose style was rooted in pre-war Texas traditions. While he cranked up his amp to fierce proportions when performing for his friends at Houston juke joints, producers who recorded him for the so-called folk-blues market usually insisted that he use an acoustic guitar for more "authentic" results. Either way, Lightnin' seldom made a bad record, and this June 4, 1963, session on which he played acoustic was among his finest, thanks much to the sensitive support of bassist Leonard Gaskin and drummer Herbie Lovelle, who did a remarkable job of following his irregular bar patterns and abrupt song endings.

    The Light

Whether they move minds or bodies, Uncle Lucius is out to make music that can lift
our spirits. And rock our souls.

Though Austin roots band Uncle Lucius has worn a Southern rock tag for most of
its 10-year existence, the band's fourth studio album, The Light, charts a course
designed to convey just how vast that musical territory really is. The Light dips into
regions where blues, R&B, jazz, soul, country and gospel took form, mapping a sound
that captures the true meaning of Americana.

Containing songwriting contributions from all four band members, The Light also
seeks to illuminate a different landscape: the sometimes-rocky terrain of our hearts
and minds. Tracked at Austin's Treefort Studios with producer George Reiff, these 12
songs deliver what guitarist Mike Carpenter, a Houston native, likes to call "Southern
rock for the thinking man. Rock 'n' roll for the soul."

Lead singer, Kevin Galloway, admits his ultimate goal is to turn musical energy into
a catalyst for humanity's evolution. This is music with depth, made by men given to
truth seeking on levels both existential and literal.

    Jolene

Jolene is Dolly Parton's 13th solo studio album, produced by Bob Ferguson. The title track, Jolene, tells the tale of a housewife confronting a beautiful seductress who she believes is having an affair with her husband. It became Parton's second solo number-one country single; it also was a moderate pop hit for her, and also did well in the United Kingdom. It has been covered by numerous performers.

The album was released around the time Parton was embarking on a solo career, after having spent seven years as part of Porter Wagoner's weekly TV series and road show, and one of the album's songs, I Will Always Love You, was reportedly written to express the remorse Parton felt over the professional breakup. Released as the album's second single, it also became a number-one country single. In 1992, Whitney Houston's version of I Will Always Love You was a mega-hit pop ballad.

Two of the album's songs had been released on previous Parton albums: Early Morning Breeze was a remixed version of a recording which had first appeared on 1971's Coat of Many Colors album (the Jolene version was remixed to more prominently feature the bass and electric steel), while Lonely Coming Down had first appeared on Parton's Wagoner tribute album, My Favorite Songwriter: Porter Wagoner, from 1972.

    This Is Christmas

Rather than a do a rehash of many of the obvious traditional tunes that fill special holiday albums by contemporary performers, maestro Luther Vandross opted for the task of creating no fewer than 7 of the 10 tracks included on his 1995 Christmas release. The result is an album that demonstrates why Vandross is still considered the preeminent black male vocalist of close to two decades: as on typical Vandross recordings, the production is crisp and strong and the vocals are flawless.

As usual, he employs the cream of musicians and background vocalists (including the inimitable Cissy Houston and Darlene Love, who is featured on the Motown-like duet I Listen to the Bells)--the perfect backdrop for Vandross's distinctive sound, exemplified on the standout title track. The Mistle Toe Jam has the party-like feel of Vandross sides like Bad Boy and the more recent Nights in Harlem, while Every Year, Every Christmas (cowritten with Richard Marx) is a soulful slow jam.

A surprising reading of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic My Favorite Things shows that if Vandross ever chose to, he could easily do a fine album of jazz standards, while O Come All Ye Faithful (featuring an all-star choir that includes Valerie Simpson) is given the album's most traditional reading. Standouts include the gorgeous Please Come Home for Christmas and the almost funky A Kiss for Christmas. Easily one of the best Christmas albums around. --David Nathan

    Live 1969

This 1969 live recording from Mount Carmel High School in Houston represents the final stage appearance by the original lineup of Texas garage combo Fever Tree. With two strong studio LPs for UNI Records behind them, the group began to fragment from internal struggles. Consequently, the label asked for one more album. The group complied and the results are contained in this previously unreleased concert recording, presented here in 180 gram vinyl.

Sharpening their chops on the Gulf Coast circuit, followed by a high-profile opening night gig at Hollywoods legendary Kaleidoscope, Fever Tree developed a keen sense of musical drama and dynamics. This versatility is in sharp display on the concerts rendition of their underground radio hit San Francisco Girls (Return of the Native). For the rest, Live 1969 focuses on groovers, a perfect set-up for the gliding fuzztones of lead guitarist Michael Knust, the sonic organ of Rob Landes, the thick rhythms provided by E.E. Bud Wolfe III on bass and John Tuttle on drums ,and the dynamic, driving lead vocals of Dennis Keller.

Dont Come Crying to Me Girl, a song originally found on the bands second album, levitates the band beyond any earthly confines. Elsewhere, the set moves between a soaring cover of Donovans Hey Gyp, their own power pop Grand Candy Young Sweet and a whirlng psych take on Wilson Picketts Ninety-Nine and One Half (Wont Do). Playing as if their lives depended on it, Live 1969 captures a band at the height of its powers, forever preserved on this final audio testament.

When Macklemore declares his music is David Bowie meets Kanye sh*t, it's a bit of an oversell on the Bowie side, but then again, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring are also honored as influences during Ten Thousand Hours, the biographical highlight that opens the Seattle rapper's vibrant sophomore release.

These arty name-drops threaten to paint the album as more obscure than it is, but even as glitch electronica and Mad Rad member Buffalo Madonna strange up the breakup number Thin Line, The Heist comes off as instant, alive, and oh so welcoming. Chalk it up to Macklemore's playful and open lyrics (When I was in the third grade/I thought I was gay/Because I could draw, my uncle was, and I kept my room straight) or the album's not so secret weapon, Ryan Lewis, the producer who earns his co-billing with a George Martin or Dave Fridmann-sized sense of purpose and an Internet kid's sense of utilizing anything and/or everything. For the music industry takeover Jimmy Iovine with Ab-Soul as guest, Lewis' production is a mix of G-Unit gangster music and a Houston hip-hop trunk rumbler, while the pro-gay marriage highlight Same Love with Mary Lambert is supported by full-bodied piano and the sound of a bittersweet marching band, all of it familiar yet twisted through a laptop with hypnotic loops and catchy hooks coming out. Gold (feeling like 500,000 sold) is joyous and bright mini-electro that feeds the positive side of the soul, while Can't Hold Us comes with an irresistible bounce, both tracks being light, lovely, and in contrast to the numbers that deal with Macklemore's addiction issues and other obstacles.

These two talented young bucks can't be contained, and hearing them offer one memorable, meaty number after another makes for an exciting listen, but this is unfiltered freshness released on Macklemore's own label, so the concepts of restraint and focus take a slight hit, leaving the is-he-Eminem, is-he-Childish Gambino, or is-he-Grieves question with no clear winner. Here, he's a mix of all of the above with some distinctive qualities, and with Lewis putting that kaleidoscope style underneath, The Heist winds up a rich combination of fresh and familiar.
