    The Hum

Hookworms return with their new album, The Hum, which follows the Leeds quintet's debut album Pearl Mystic - a record that steadily went on to become
one of 2013's most impactful breakout statements in the UK!

Even more ferocious and uncompromising than its predecessor and yet more
melodic and focused, The Hum further cements the band's status as a vital
force in British independent music. The Hum takes the blueprint of Pearl
Mystic - proto-punk, garage rock, Washington DC hardcore, 80's British
spacerock - and further stamps it with the band's seal. Leaner, meaner and
more propulsive thanks to the muscular playing of new drummer JN, the
record boasts both the most straight-up punk song the band have written to
date in eviscerating opener "The Impasse" ("we wanted it to sound like
Suicide if they had a full band", explains MJ) and moments of patient,
widescreen beauty only hinted at previously.

"We were writing Pearl Mystic to an audience in the same way your diary has
an audience", says guitarist SS. "It's written to one but if no one ever reads
it that's not a big deal. This time round though we knew we had a really clear
audience, so The Hum is really about different freedoms and constraints -
with Pearl Mystic the possibilities were almost too vast, this time around we
had a much clearer idea of what the record should be like and that became
freeing because we didn't need to worry about its direction so much. That
word "free" is a good way to approach The Hum, a record that could only be
made by a band in total command of their personality.

    Hums Of The Lovin' Spoonful

    180 Gram R.T.I. Vinyl Pressing

From the Original Kama Sutra Mono Masters

Greenwich Village, 1964: While the folk boom is still in progress, other musics began seeping into the corners and clubs of lower Manhattan. Rock, once down for the count, came back with a vengeance, largely thanks to a klatch of young British bands. Roots music, especially blues, grew rapidly in popularity as folk enthusiasts expanded their horizons. In this intoxicating milieu, John Sebastian, Zal Yanovsky, Joe Butler and Steve Boone united to form the Lovin' Spoonful. Originally a jug band with folk roots, they readily incorporated the sounds they heard all around them. Combining British Invasion jangle with the blues' growl and folk's attention to lyrical detail, they forged a sound completely their own. Accomplished musicians all, they had two secret weapons: the guitar virtuosity of Zal Yanovsky and the rising songwriting talent of John Sebastian.

The first Spoonful single, "Do You Believe in Magic," took AM radio by storm in June of that year, reaching #9 on the Billboard Hot 100. Featuring an irrepressible melody, a chiming autoharp and Yanovsky's tasteful fills, it was an audacious debut. Their inaugural Kama Sutra LP, also titled Do You Believe in Magic, followed in November 1965. Containing three other Sebastian originals and one song credited to the band, the balance of the LP contained traditional blues covers and songs by contemporary writers. Reaching #32 on the Billboard Top 200, it established the band as one of country's brightest new talents.

By the release of their second album, Daydream, in March 1966, the band's songwriting chops had fully blossomed, particularly Sebastian's, who wrote or co-wrote all but one of the songs. The album's first single, "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice" reached #10 on the Hot 100 and married a signature Yanovsky riff with a galloping piano part to form an indelible hook. The title track, a mid-tempo reverie with an ace whistling solo, did even better, soaring to #2. Skipping ahead a few decades, the album cut "Butchie's Tune" was used to great effect in season five of Mad Men.

The band soon returned with Hums of the Lovin' Spoonful. Consciously working in different styles, the band essayed country ("Nashville Cats"), folk balladry ("Rain on the Roof") and psych- tinged rock ("Summer in the City"), among other sounds. This time, all the songs were originals and it was the last full album recorded by the original quartet. It stands as a triumphant ending to one of the most exciting chapters in the American rock story of the 1960s, a perfect encapsulation of a time when it seemed anything was possible in music. Sourced from the original Kama Sutra mono masters, these masterpieces are pressed at RTI on 180gm vinyl.

    Further Out

    Colored Vinyl

Produced/Engineered/Mixed/Mastered Completely Analog By Matt Talbot (Hum)

Further Out, the anticipated debut full length from the reclusive Indiana trio
Cloakroom, can be defined best as an exploratory sonic mission. From the album's
opener, "Paperweight," the crushing force of a wall of distorted bass and pounding
drumming collapses to uncover the airy, reverb-soaked vocals of guitarist Doyle Martin,
who's carrying a sullen burden that seems just as weighed down. From the headbanging
heaviness of "Moon Funeral" to the ethereal moments of songs like "Starchild Skull"
and Mesmer," Cloakroom's output is the end result of researching seemingly dissimilar
elements like atmospheric post-rock, punishingly slow stoner metal, and cathartic emo
and how their best qualities can work into a final, organic sound, masterfully navigated
by the expert and completely analog production of Matt Talbot. Further Out boasts the
timelessness of a classic record: it is expansive and exploratory while still reflective and
referential to the astral tendencies of predecessors like Hum and Jesu.

Tall Tales And The Silver Lining is a Los Angeles based band led by songwriter Trevor Beld Jimenez. Beld Jimenez grew up on the sounds of '70's AM radio, along with L.A. classics like Jackson Browne, Court and Spark-era Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Crazy Horse and the Byrds. His music incorporates all of that -- classic songwriting, great playing, simple, hook-heavy arrangements and thoughtful production -- but updates the sound for today. It's straightforward, heartfelt rock & roll, ten songs of love and loss, ocean-scented breezes and the hum of the open road beneath your wheels.

    Tonight's The Night

By 1975 Young had written some of the most enduring anthems in rock history. But from the slow, tension-building piano opening of Tonight's the Night, he downshifts into darkness and Crazy Horse's folk-country melodies take on a guttural hum that would eventually speak to generations of punk and grunge musicians.

Inspired by the overdose deaths of two of Young's friends, roadie Bruce Berry and guitarist Danny Whitten, the title track (and its closing reprise) is a hypnotic cry of why? Even the relative party songs, Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown and Roll Another Number, fit the album's bus-to-nowhere resignation. -Steve Knopper

On February 4th, 2014, 73 year old Grammy nominated blues and R&B legend Bobby Rush added a generous helping of all analog, direct to tape, soul to Upstairs at United series. The set opens with a blistering take on the Beatles ''Come Together'' where most of the vocal is ''sung'' by the harmonica, followed by a sultry take on Otis Redding's ''Hard To Handle.'' Side two starts with a newly penned gem ''Why Do They Act Like That'' and finishes with Floyd-ish take on a Bobby Rush classic, ''2 Eyes Full of Tears.'' As traditional to the series, these recordings were done live to tape above the mechanical hum of the record presses at United Record Pressing then cut as a 45 RPM 12'' EP for the optimum listening experience.

Salad Boys came together at the end of 2012 with members from other illustrious Christchurch groups T54, Bang! Bang! Eche! and the Dance Asthmatics. Recorded, the Salad Boys are deceivingly charming, presenting a careful but curious balance of well-informed pop melodies, hypnotizing rhythms and heady instrumentation. The group's self-titled mini-album released in 2013 caused something of a mini-sensation, receiving praise from the likes of Stolen Girlfriends Club, Mess and Noise, and many more. In real life, the Salad Boys perform a wondrous assault: a charged up blitz of clanging guitars, intoxicating drones, head-down acid repetition and an abundance of dazzling pop hooks. This notoriety has scored the group a wealth of engagements up and down New Zealand including slots at the Camp a Low Hum and Chronophonium festivals, gigs with Sebadoh, The Bats, & Parquet Courts as well as a highly honorable spot performing as backing band for David Kilgour of legendary NZ group The Clean.

    Portrait Of Sheila

During the Blue Note 75th anniversary celebration the label released 100 essential Blue Note LPs and asked New York Times readers what titles they'd like to see make the list. This album is one of five new reissues that were hand-selected by Blue Note President, Don Was, based on New York Times reader recommendations.

Sheila Jordan's debut recording was one of the very few vocal records made for Blue Note during Alfred Lion's reign. Accompanied by the subtle guitarist Barry Galbraith, bassist Steve Swallow, and drummer Denzil Best, Jordan sounds quite distinctive, cool-toned, and adventurous during her classic date. Her interpretations of Oscar Brown, Jr.'s Hum Drum Blues and 11 standards (including Falling in Love With Love, Dat Dere, Baltimore Oriole, and I'm a Fool to Want You) are both swinging and haunting. Possibly because of her originality, Sheila Jordan would not record again for over a dozen years, making this highly recommended set quite historic.

    Total Dust

Dusted is Brian Borcherdt (Holy Fuck, LIDS) and Leon Taheny (Final Fantasy, Rituals, Bruce Peninsula). Wanting to explore a different sound, but unsure of where or how to find it, Borcherdt spent a December weekend in Nova Scotia. Alone and unable to sleep in a cold, dank cabin, he drew musical inspiration from his sparse surroundings. Fueled by a psychedelic hum underneath a veil of low drone-y distortion, Total Dust is Borcherdt's revelation.

Most bands don't record through a small, blown-out practice amp. You may find however that it works, as the guitar fights its way through, only the most important notes survive. Their songs don't exist to be overproduced. They're recorded lean and they stay that way. In fact, it's almost impossible to manipulate anything when your studio is either a small converted garage or a rural cabin stocked with a scattered drum kit, a bass synth, and a tambourine. That's why every track was laid completely bare, stripped of all unnecessary instrumentation so that what remains is sometimes melodic, sometimes haunting, and always integral.

Before even one song had been released, the band signed with Polyvinyl and played a show with labelmates Deerhoof and of Montreal. Their performance challenged the limitations of a two-piece: vocals and guitar expelled over a raucous backbone of live drums, 808 samples, and bass synth.

    Limited Edition - 1000 Copies

The third album, I Believe, was released in 2001, after which Haden took an extended break from the band, recording a solo album for Dreamworks Records (later released on his own Diamond Soul Recordings).

"Strip most music of its fashionable, genre-specific accoutrements and there's precious little left. Except country, perhaps. It's with this in mind that Los Angelenos Spain go about their lovelorn business. There are no frills, no zeitgeist nods here, just the simplicity of the strum, the slide and the hushed confessions of Josh Haden - son of jazz bassist Charlie and disciple of the songwriter's old skool.

"Three albums in, 'I Believe' is a substantial offering awash with humble entreaties and doe-eyed, lounge affectations. Sure, the moniker may flirt outrageously with Monsieur Schmaltz, but there really are some sweet, sweet sounds lurking beneath the initially perceived pretence. The slow-mo beauty of 'Mary' showcases Haden's almost electronic, pitch-perfect coo (and with all genre gimmicks gone, the voice has to be exact), while the self-explanatory, nu-prairie hum of 'You Were Meant For Me' betrays a romantic absolutism that Nick Cave would be proud of.

The debut Brian Haas & Matt Chamberlain album Frames features 11 instrumental compositions that spiral through the tempered scale. A through-composed work for piano and percussion, it was written entirely by Haas, the internationally renowned pianist and founder of Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. Now based in Santa Fe, Haas wrote Frames as a suite, equally influenced by stride piano masters Earl Hines, James P. Johnson and Fats Waller; the early minimalist works of Philip Glass and Steve Reich; and the lush aesthetic of modernists James Blake, Flying Lotus and Nigel Godrich. The music is pastoral, intensely melodic and tells the story of an imagined human life.

"After several years of non-stop touring with my band Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey I felt completely drained," explains Haas. "I was pulled to move to the high desert and mountains of Sante Fe; the space/distance from the road, the unearthly view from my house and the strange hum of my new surroundings inspired this music. What started as an exercise in all 12 keys turned into Frames."

Brian Haas has recorded 21 albums and toured the world for two decades with Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, a band he started while a student at The University of Tulsa. Grammy Award-winning drummer Matt Chamberlain is one of the most revered musicians of his time having toured and recorded with the likes of Brad Mehldau, Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians, Critters Buggin, Tori Amos, Bill Frisell and Frank Ocean among others.

Like Bert & Ernie and Felix & Oscar, the bond of friendship can be peculiar. It is indisputable, though, that there exists a palpable, visceral energy that attracts strangers to form a perfect union. And, in those flawless entities we find a truer sense of being, a holy, deeper meaning that art only strives to approximate.

Eastern Midwestern shoots for the moon, and only most-artfully turns back on itself. Whether it's the genteel storytelling of the Middle West, or the affected attitude of the jagged Eastern seaboard, this unique foursome of de-facto New Yorkers aims to please even the most discerning ear.

They dare you not to hum back a melody, to not swing your arms in grand air guitar gestures, or flail faux-fills down dribbling air-toms. You'll have no control as your inner-bassist contorts the corners of your mouth into Bass Face, your under bite leading your head in an approving Rock Nod.

Enjoy your ride to Zenith and back! It is the capital of your favorite fictional state: Winnemac, so equally eastern and so equally midwestern.

    Apocalypse, girl

Think big, girl, like a king, think kingsize. Jenny Hval's new record opens with a
quote from the Danish poet Mette Moestrup, and continues towards the abyss.
Apocalypse, girl is a hallucinatory narrative that exists somewhere between fiction
and reality, a post-op fever dream, a colorful timelapse of death and rebirth,
close-ups of impossible bodies - all told through the language of transgressive
    pop music.

When Norwegian noise legend Lasse Marhaug interviewed Jenny Hval for his
fanzine in early 2014, they started talking about movies, and the conversation
was so interesting that she asked him to produce her next record. It turned out
that talking about film was a great jumping off point for album production.
Hval's songs slowly expanded from solo computer loops and vocal edits to contributions
from bandmates Håvard Volden and Kyrre Laastad, before finally
exploding into collaborations with Øystein Moen (Jaga Jazzist/Puma), Thor
Harris (Swans), improv cellist Okkyung Lee and harpist Rhodri Davis. All of
these musicians have two things in common: they are fierce players with a great
ear for intimacy, and they hear music in the closing of a suitcase as much as in a
    beautiful melody.

And so Apocalypse, girl is a very intimate, very visual beast. It dreams of an old
science fiction movie where gospel choir girls are punks and run the world with
auto-erotic impulses. It's a gentle hum from a doomsday cult, a soft desire for
collective devotion, an ode to the close-up and magnified, unruly desires.
Jenny Hval has developed her own take on intimate sound since the release of
her debut album in 2006. Her work, which includes 2013's critically celebrated
Innocence Is Kinky (Rune Grammofon), has gradually incorporated books, sound
installations and collaborations with poets and visual artists. For Hval, language
is central, always torn between the vulnerable, the explosive and total humiliation.

Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight

In addition to inciting widespread fan fervor, Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight has drawn overwhelming critical and tastemaker support across the board. Pitchfork claimed, "SCOTT's second studio album, Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight, is the Houston rapper's most concise and cohesive project to date," adding, "He has always been a mood-setter and a vocalist, and he is in full command of the vibe, tone, and mood of this entire project more than ever." Houston Press wrote, "SCOTT's playground is chaos; the pure and unbridled variety that some have tried to emulate live but have ultimately settled for second place," while W Magazine fittingly dubbed him, "Your new rap superhero." Billboard described the album as "his own trap opera," and Rolling Stone profiled him extensively.

Over the course of 14 tracks, TRAVIS threads together an engaging, enthralling, and epic patchwork of anesthetized and apocalyptic production, mind-numbing raps, and glorious hooks punctuated by an A-list cast of collaborators. Kendrick Lamar delivers hard-hitting and hypnotic bars in the middle of "Goosebumps" just before a signature chantable chorus. "The Ends" veers between a haunting hum and a verse-for-verse tandem of our protagonist and Andre 3000 of OutKast. "Way Back" drips into a searing guitar solo as "Sweet Sweet" fires off one of his stickiest hooks to date. By the time The Weeknd and TRAVIS serve up a smooth send-off on "Wonderful," you're in the Trap for life, and you won't want to leave

Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight is finally here, and TRAVIS SCOTT's presence can be felt throughout pop culture louder than ever.
