American IV: The Man Comes Around

On first thought, the idea of the Man in Black recording such covers as Bridge over Troubled Water, Danny Boy, and The First Time Ever I Saw Your
Face might seem odd, even for an artist who's been able to put his personal stamp on just about everything. But American IV: The Man Comes Around,
which also draws on Cash's original songs as well as those by Nine Inch Nails (Hurt), Sting (I Hung My Head), and Depeche Mode (Personal Jesus),
may be one of the most autobiographical albums of the 70-year-old singer-songwriter's career. Nearly every tune seems chosen to afford the ailing giant
of popular music a chance to reflect on his life, and look ahead to what's around the corner. From the opening track--Cash's own The Man Comes
Around, filled with frightening images of Armageddon--the album, produced by Rick Rubin, advances a quiet power and pathos, built around spare
arrangements and unflinching honesty in performance and subject. In 15 songs, Cash moves through dark, haunted meditations on death and
destruction, poignant farewells, testaments to everlasting love, and hopeful salutes to redemption. He sounds as if he means every word, his baritonebass,
frequently frayed and ravaged, taking on a weary beauty. By the time he gets to the Beatles' In My Life, you'll very nearly cry. Go ahead. He
sounds as if he's about to, too. Unforgettable. --Alanna Nash

This is the fourth in a series of collaborations between the original Man in Black, Johnny Cash, and producer Rick Rubin. The Man Comes Around
features new Cash compositions as well as a diverse array of cover songs, including Nine Inch Nails Hurt, Hank Williams I'm So Lonesome I Could
Cry, and Paul Simon's Bridge Over Troubled Waters. He duets with Don Henley on Desperado.

    Get Hurt

New Jersey rockers The Gaslight Anthem return with their eagerly anticipated new album, Get Hurt, through Island Records/Mercury.

Recorded at the legendary Blackbird Studios in Nashville with producer Mike Crossey (The 1975, Arctic Monkeys and Jake Bugg), Get Hurt sees The
Gaslight Anthem pushing their raw stripped back rock 'n' roll into new territory, drawing on a fresh palette of influences ranging from folk, punk, and
Americana. It is an album that is heavier, and yet at the same time more intimate, than anything they have produced to date.

Following the success of their 2012 album Handwritten -- which charted in the Top 10 of the album charts across Europe and America, with the band
playing Wembley Stadium, Glastonbury and Coachella along the way -- The Gaslight Anthem's fifth studio album perfectly shows them thriving creatively
while pushing their horizons artistically. It is a record that oozes the confidence of a band at the very top of their game.

    Hurt & The Merciless

Hurt & The Merciless marks a musical culmination for The Heavy, a mesmerizing blend of their trademark rock'n'roll classicism and funk and soul grooves, with added sonic experimentation. Self-produced, the band's main aim when recording was to capture the powerful energy of their live show-that life-affirming spark of rock'n'roll when anything feels possible. The 12 track album features lead single Since You Been Gone, with its lolloping groove, plus the spiky garage-rock anthem What Happened To The Love? and is their strongest batch of songs to date.

    Nothing Can Hurt Me (Soundtrack)

2011's RSD saw an Omnivore vinyl reissue of the "test pressing" of Big Star's 1975 swansong Third, meticulously recreated right down to the master tape box and tracking sheets. Early in 2012, the band's frontman Alex Chilton was celebrated via the label's release of Free Again: The 1970 Sessions. Now, Omnivore is handling the soundtrack to the Magnolia Pictures documentary Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me, and it will premiere as a RSD-exclusive yellow double vinyl edition limited to 4,000 copies worldwide. The 2012 SXSW Film Festival selection tells the story of the ultimate cult band, a group that never saw any considerable commercial success but influenced an entire generation of pop musicians. Nothing Can Hurt Me chronicles Alex Chilton's ascent to fame

As lead singer of The Box Tops through the recording of Big Star's three albums, to the 1978 death of Chilton's collaborator Chris Bell.

The 21 previously unreleased tracks on the soundtrack's four vinyl sides encompass vintage unissued mixes, alternate takes, demos, and new mixes made for the motion picture of Big Star, Chilton and Bell songs. The soundtrack includes 21 previously unheard period mixes, new mixes made specifically for the film, and alternate takes and demos.

American Epic: The Best of Mississippi John Hurt

Blues fingerpicking guitarist, singer and sharecropper Mississippi John Hurt was born in the heart of Mississippi Hill Country, along the veiny tributaries of the great American river. His moving renditions of "Frankie" and "Spike Driver Blues" were included in Harry Smith's American Anthology of Folk Music in 1952 and were vitally influential on the Greenwich Village folk music revival of the 1960s as well as John Fahey's development of the American Primitive Guitar genre.

    Today! (Pure Pleasure) (Awaiting Repress)

The '60s revived the careers of many early bluesmen, but none so dramatically as that of Mississippi John Hurt. Hurt recorded a few brilliant sides in the '20s, then ostensibly disappeared off the face of the Earth until folk musician Tom Hoskins went looking for him in 1963. At the age of 70, Hurt began one of the greatest comebacks in music history. From his first '60s shows until his death in 1966, Hurt was a popular mainstay of the folk-music circuit. TODAY! demonstrates why the audiences loved him so. More a melodic songster than a traditional bluesman, Hurt has a great deal in common with '60s folk musicians - many of whom he inspired. Hurt's dexterous and beautiful finger-picking style provided aspiring folk performers with a template, as did his warm and gentle stage presence. All these elements are amply evident on TODAY!, on which Hurt turns in definitive performances of Pay Day, Louis Collins, Spike Driver's Blues, and Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor. He even takes a rare (and successful) turn at slide guitar on Talking Casey. Like all of Hurt's Vanguard albums, TODAY! is an absolutely essential document of a great American artist.

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Mama Says I'm Crazy

Since no one could copyright Mississippi, two major blues performers, Fred McDowell and John Hurt, adopted the state as part of their name. To confuse matters more, both performers made comebacks during the late '50s/early '60s and both specialized in prewar acoustic blues. While a blues novice might find such similarities confusing, the two men's singing and guitar styles are polar opposites. Whereas Hurt's smooth, deep vocals and Piedmont fingerpicking made him easily accessible to the folk revival crowd, McDowell's soulful vocals and forcefully rhythmic guitar represented something more primitive. In 1967, producer George Mitchell brought together McDowell and harp player Johnny Woods for an off-the-cuff session not unlike what one might have heard at a Como, MS, house party. Interestingly, the two men hadn't played together in eight years, but on songs like Standing at the Backdoor and the title track, one would never guess it. This isn't a polite affair, with one player holding back while the other solos. Instead, McDowell and Woods trade notes, overlap, and rush forward on Long Haired Doney and Shake Em' on Down as though they had an unlimited supply of energy. While McDowell's vocals and slashing guitar propel Goin' Away and I Got a Woman forward, Woods' harp adds pizzazz. Acoustic blues fans will warmly embrace Mama Says I'm Crazy and be thankful that Mitchell went to the trouble required to track down Woods for this earthy set.

It Might As Well Be Spring

    Blue Note Reissue

As much as I'd love to relay all kinds of anecdotes about the challenges Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray encounter during the mastering sessions, I witness none. These boys know the sound of the facility and the Van Gelder masters like the backs of their handsBack home a month later, I unpack some test pressings Chad Kassem has sent meI hear the most realistic-sounding drums ever reproduced by my system. It's as though I'm sitting at the point of creation, experiencing the same high that brought such gifted musicians together as one. Steve Hoffman, Kevin Gray, Chad Kassem, and Don MacInnis have done Rudy Van Gelder and his Blue Note artists proud. Jason Victor Serinus, Stereophile, April 2008

Two weeks after Ike Quebec recorded his comeback album Heavy Soul for Blue Note, he was back at the Van Gelder Studio with the same band (Freddie Roach, Milt Hinton and Al Harewood), making a second album. The confidence paid off because It Might As Well Be Spring is every bit the classic the first album proved to be. Quebec's big-toned, vulnerable tenor playing is a thing to behold, as his heart-stopping version of the title tune, Lover Man and Willow Weep For Me attest. Easy Don't Hurt is one of his blues masterpieces.

    Rocket Ship Beach (Awaiting Repress)

Formerly lead singer with the acclaimed US alternative rock band the Del Fuegos, Zanes launched his solo career in 1995 with the release of Cool Down Time. Produced by Mitchell Froom with help from Tom Waits associate Tchad Blake, this collection anchored elements of blues and country as accompaniment to Zanes` dark narratives of loss, hurt and betrayal. As well as a cover version of Mose Allison`s `If You Live`, the artist`s own writing included the affecting ballad `Carelessly` and the tough blues of `Rough Spot`.

After relocating to New York City in the late 90s, Zanes settled down to family life with his wife and new baby. He began playing with a group of fathers under the name the Wonderland String Band, recording a number of privately distributed tapes. The idea evolved into a series of CD releases on Zanes` Festival Five label, featuring guest artists including Sheryl Crow, Aimee Mann, Lou Reed, Suzanne Vega and Dar Williams alongside the original band`s partners and children. Mixing standards, original material and childrens` songs in a delightfully unprententious manner, the series attracted positive reviews and even earned Zanes a Grammy Award for 2006`s Catch That Train!

Inspired by bands such as Sheer Terror, Breakdown, Carnivore and Raw Deal, Blood For Blood formed as a reaction to the existing heavy music scene in Boston back in 1995. We couldn't relate to anything that was going on in Boston at the time, says vocalist Erick Medina, We wanted to hear music about the shit we saw and faced everyday. We wanted to hear shit that was pissed off and mirrored the desparation that we felt in our lives. The scene at the time was a fashion show. The people sucked and the bands sucked so we started our own band and forged our own scene.

And they never looked back. With a core of diehard fans and a notorious reputation with club security and law enforcement around town, Blood For Blood quickly established themselves as Boston's hardest and most infamous band. Here on their 1997 debut full-length, Spit My Last Breath, Blood For Blood layed the groundwork for what would be an unparalleled legacy in hardcore. Considered one of the band's finest moments, the album includes nine tracks from their original debut and four bonus tracks from the band's Hurt You demo. Twist Uptown

The Crystals' first LP Twist Uptown, originally released in the summer of 1962, occupies an important position in Phil Spector's remarkable body of work. As the first full album produced by Spector and the first LP to be released on his legendary Philles label, it's a crucial cornerstone in the building of the fabled Wall of Sound. Beyond its historic significance, though, Twist Uptown retains a timeless resonance, thanks to Spector's seminal studio wizardry and the Crystals' sweet-but-streetwise vocal magic.

The New York-based Crystals, all of whom were still in their teens at the time, were handpicked by Spector as the first act signed to Philles, and the first performers to receive the full-on Wall of Sound studio treatment. The quintet quickly scored major successes with their Spector-produced singles There's No Other (Like My Baby) and Uptown. The latter, penned by Brill building stalwarts Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, also made history for introducing a new level of gritty social realism to pop.

Indeed, Twist Uptown perfectly embodies the combination of yearning innocence and worldlier emotions that would come to define Spector's greatest work. In addition to the aforementioned classics and the minor hit Oh Yeah, Maybe Baby, the album features such lesser-known girl-group gems as I Love You Eddie, Please Hurt Me, What A Nice Way to Turn Seventeen and the one-of-a-kind oddity Frankenstein Twist, along with an early version On Broadway, actually recorded before the Drifters' reworked hit version, and an upbeat take on the Carla Thomas chestnut Gee Whiz.

Hercules (2014) is a riveting adventure blockbuster directed by Brett Ratner and starring Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock), Joseph Fiennes, John Hurt and more. It is based on the graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars.

The film was a pleasant surprise to critics. The chief film critic for Variety wrote: ''it's a grandly staged, solidly entertaining, old-fashioned adventure movie that does something no other Hercules movie has quite done before: it cuts the mythical son of Zeus down to human size (or as human as you can get while still being played by Dwayne Johnson)'' and further added that ''[Hercules's] strongest asset is surely Johnson, who continues to foster one of the most affable, guileless screen personas in movies today.''

The music epic, driving, classic and cool. All of these adjectives were used to describe the music desired by the creative team making Hercules. Composer Fernando Velázquez rose to the occasion and delivered a fantastic score. The recording sessions took place at Air Studios and Abbey Road Studios in London, with Fernando conducting the tremendous London Philharmonic Orchestra.

    High (Awaiting Repress)

Following a period of rest and reflection, and a recent performance at Sydney's Opera House, Royal Headache is ready to ride once more. Their new album is called High and injects even more soul and passion into the breakneck formula that became synonymous with Royal Headache. If their first album was akin to a courtship, think of High as the romance. Not just on the level of two people falling in love, but a romance with the qualities of pop music that make Royal Headache who they are and inform what they do: eternal optimism, wistful beauty and interlocking presentation that evolves from four guys singing on a street corner to speed-addled rock, and all the brightness and darkness in between, teetering between stability and chaos and well-aware of how unsteady their footing might be. The amount of emotion and range of Shogun's vocals and the whip-smart counterpoint provided by the band -- drummer Shortty, guitarist Law, and bassist Joe -- present a dash through decades of pop history, recombining not just the music but all of the feelings of pain and joy elicited from audiences, supercharged and ready to explode once more. Shogun's voice and lyrics aren't so much a secret weapon in Royal Headache's arsenal as they are the front line, happiness and hurt soaring above the songs, driving home all the feelings within. The band will tour the U.S. this summer with Sheer Mag, including appearances at Los Angeles' Berserktown II fest, and an open horizon thereafter.
