    Raisin' Cain

Johnny Winter's popular career initially soared then floundered before he re-established contact with the blues and R&B that had been his inspiration from the beginning. If for no other reason, his glorious resurrection of Muddy Waters' career with a series of punchy, barnstorming albums was enough to earn him the gratitude of those who relished the blues as a life force. In assisting one of his mentors, Winter also re-discovered his own blues instincts, mining fresh seams of invention through a series of best-selling albums.

    A New Day Yesterday

Named after the early Jethro Tull classic, which he expertly covers here in a jaw-dropping performance, A New Day Yesterday is a fine debut by guitar ace Joe Bonamassa. And though his record company tried to ride the coattails of teenage guitar prodigies like Kenny Wayne Shepard and Jonny Lang and position him (misguidedly and much too late) as a straight-up prodigal blues kid, Bonamassa is really much more than a traditional bluesman. Rather, as best exemplified by the Jethro Tull number cited above, his bluesy take on Free's Walk in My Shadows, or his hard boogie romp through Al Kooper's Nuthin' I Wouldn't Do (For a Woman Like You), this excellent debut places the guitarist's influences as much in classic '70s hard rock as in the blues. Along with his deceptively age-wearied vocals (he was only 22 at the time of this recording), this unusual combination translates into the aggressive, soulful crunch heard on Bonamassa's many original compositions. Among these, the jolting double whammy of Miss You, Hate You and Colour and the Shape (note the Anglicized spelling) are the most obvious standouts, but the guitarist also makes the Warren Haynes-penned If Heartaches Were Nickels his own with a tense, riveting performance. All in all, a promising debut.

    Second Winter (Speakers Corner)

Johnny Winter released the album Second Winter, a passionate and fervent collection of songs, just a few months after his record debut. This legendary band's steadfast commitment to blues is apparent in every single note they play, although tender emotions are all the more discernible in hard, rock'n'roll-like outbursts than ever before. Winter blends his crystal-clear, unmannered guitar playing with the gravelly charm of his raspy voice to produce a compact sound in which both his own compositions and old favourites (Johnny B. Goode) are revived. It is quite clear that the white shooting star is on a par with the giants of blues as far as vocals and guitar playing are concerned.
It is often speculated over as to whether Johnny's new ideas were simply too numerous for a single LP, or whether the producers thought they were not quite sufficient for a double LP. Whatever the answer, the original was released as a three-sided album, with a blank fourth side! In order to fill the album with fiery rock'n'roll, a new production with the 45 rpm versions of Miss Ann, Hustled Down In Texas, and Highway 61 Revisited is now included on the fourth side. It goes without saying that alongside the present double LP Winter's audiophile first release (Columbia CS 9826) is available from Speakers Corner, too.

    Musicians:

    • Johnny Winter (guitar, mandolin, vocal)

    • Edgar Winter (piano, alto saxophone, organ, harpsichord)

    • Tommy Shannon, Dennis Collins (bass)

    • 'Uncle' John Turner (percussion)

    Recording: 1969 by Ed Kollins

    Production: Johnny and Edgar Winter

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Paul de Jong is best known as the cofounder, cellist and resident found sound savant of the beloved, defunct collage-pop duo, the Books. Five years after that band delivered their final album, The Way Out, to much acclaim, de Jong delivers his first solo album, IF.

IF sets the Books' early albums (particularly The Lemon of Pink) as a starting point, and elevates that beguiling sense of wonder and amazement to genuinely transcendent new heights. De Jong's ability to find the musical in the mundane has always been uncanny - it is part of what made the Books so magical - and that
gift is what makes IF such a marvelous curiosity, and such a true pleasure to hear. In de Jong's world, everything around him is a potential instrument: his
mind-bogglingly vast collection of forgotten private press regional folk records, spoken-word oddities of indeterminate origin unearthed in discarded thrift store piles, and various everyday household utensils that we tend to take for granted. One man's trash is de Jong's
tool to craft yet another treasure.

Featuring a handful of friends and family as musical guests, IF steers a course from joyously eccentric folk-pop to humorously inside-out jazz, resulting in a refreshing piece of outsider art with a replay value that's
    off the charts.

Radwan Ghazi Moumneh returns with a second full-length album from his acclaimed Jerusalem In My Heart (JIMH) project, conceived and recorded in his dual homes MontrÉal and Beirut. Since the release of his first album in 2013, following many years during which the project was a strictly MontrÉal-based live/theatrical happening, Moumneh has brought JIMH to mesmerized live audiences in Canada, Europe and the Middle East. While JIMH continues to expand to include a larger cast of players for select engagements and commissions, the group is currently an immersive and performative audio-visual duo at its core, with Moumneh responsible for all sound/composition and filmmaker Charles-AndrÉ Coderre creating 16mm visuals and live projections/installations. Moumneh expands his compositional palette on If He Dies, If If If If If If, exploring new deconstructions and juxtapositions of both traditional and popular Arab musical currents, with an album that oscillates between powerfully emotive vocal tunes and instrumental works that primarily make use of Radwan's expressive acoustic playing on buzuk and zurna as a point of departure. If He Dies, If If If If If If is an adventurous, scrupulous, impassioned and highly original work of modern contemporary Arabic music and a gratifying sign that JIMH is situating itself in recorded works with the same thoughtful and dynamic intensity previously accessible only in live performances.

    What If

Since 2004, Volker Bertelmann - aka Hauschka - has, steadily earned a remarkable reputation as a purveyor of imaginative, distinctive, prepared piano music. On What If - which finds him adding player pianos (also known as pianolas) to his arsenal - Bertelmann expands his range even further, defying expectations and delivering what is without a doubt his most ingenious album yet.

While engaging with his trademark technique of utilizing unusual objects - art erasers, for example - to treat (or 'prepare') the piano, Hauschka also programmed parts for player pianos, exploiting the speed at which they could play, manipulating the resulting sounds, and building layers to emphasize a composition's meter.

What If aims to provoke reflection beyond the musical sphere with the titles of the both the album and its individual tracks. Overflowing with haunting melodies, mysterious sounds, and complex patterns, What If crowns an extraordinary couple of years for Hauschka. Likely to prove one of 2017's most original albums, What If redefines the very notion of piano music in dramatic and exceptional fashion. It stands as a rebuttal to those who lazily shoehorn Hauschka's work into the so-called, uncomfortably broad 'new classical' category, and instead underlines his status as a unique and invaluable artist.

Jerry Douglas, the 14x GRAMMY Award winner who has played on over 2,000 separate recordings (Alison Krauss, Mumford & Sons, James Taylor, etc.), presents a new album with a unique sound and a brand-new outfit of musicians, hand-picked by Douglas himself. On What If, Douglas decisively merges jazz inclinations with the bluegrass, country, blues, swing, rock, and soul he's spent his life absorbing and performing, forging a sound that flies beyond the boundaries of anything he - or anyone else - has done before. From the up-tempo combination of what Douglas calls 'bebop jazz and caveman jazz' on 'Cavebop' to the symphonically sweeping title track, What If delves into areas unexplored by any other musician, much less by Dobro! The album also includes a funky, soulful take on Tom Waits' '2:19' and a blistering bluegrass-meets-jam-band reinvention of the classic 'Hey Joe.'

    If Anything

If Anything, the rst full-length by Greys, is the young quartet's
own warped update of vintage post-punk; frenetic guitars
running against walls of noise, held together by sharp strands of
melody. Emerging from the vibrant Toronto punk scene, Greys
are economical in their swift punches of noise, anchoring short
bursts of mania with huge choruses. Each song exists in its own
space and represents different aspects of the things we like
about noisy, dissonant music," says singer/guitarist Shehzaad
Jiwani. "But instead of being built solely around riffs, they were
built with hooks in mind, too.

The 35-minute LP pulses with a manic urgency, as drummer
Braeden Craig and bassist Colin Gillespie's syncopated rhythms
punctuate guitarist Cam Graham's smothering dissonance.
Through exasperated shouts, Jiwani lets loose the fury that splits
open his songwriting. The lyrics went from outward frustration to
inward, he says. A lot of it takes place from within my own
head. Swinging between hard-driving punk and '90s indie
rifng, the respites on If Anything only underscore Greys' brute
    force and anthemic inclinations.

Written over the summer of 2013 and recorded in ten days at
Toronto's Candle Recording studio, If Anything is a fullling
aftershock of noise rock, immediately arresting and bursting with
    condence.

    If Then Not When

The ghost stories, murder ballads and grimoires on Louisville, KY's King's Daughters & Sons full-length album If Then Not When are haunting, spare and at times explosively unsettling; part William Faulkner, part Led Zeppelin. Informed by, but not beholden to the history of its members (Shipping News, Rachel's, The For Carnation, Shannon Wright), their songs are singular, thoughtful and best heard loud. If Then Not When was made direct to 2 tape in 2008 and 2009 at The Funeral Home by Kevin Ratterman, engineer for California Guitar Trio, My Morning Jacket and Wax Fang. If I Stay is an American romantic drama film directed by R. J. Cutler, based on the novel of the same name by Gayle Forman. The film stars Chloë Grace Moretz, Mireille Enos, Jamie Blackley, Joshua Leonard, Stacy Keach, and Aisha Hinds. It was released on August 22, 2014.

The story: life changes in an instant for young Mia Hall after a car accident puts her in a coma. During an out-of-body experience, she must decide whether to wake up and live a life far different than she had imagined.

New York based Indie Rock producer Adam Lasus prefers recording on analog tape over digital. He produced six original songs and a cover of the song ''Today'' by Smashing Pumpkins, that were performed by the fictional band Willamette Stone in the movie led by Jamie Blackley's character Adam Wilde. If I'm The Devil...

letlive.'s new album, If I'm the Devil is a strident, principled and heavy work. It's also perfectly suited for someone who just wants to pound on the steering wheel after a hard day at school, work, or whatever institution happens to command most of your waking life. Just consider the name "letlive." - it's meant to be life-affirming above all else.

Frontman Jason Aalon Bulter has an ambitious nature which takes him to extremely lofty places. He acknowledges that letlive. is a punk band and one that reflects humanity
as a collection of emotional, frontal-lobe beings. At the same time, he fully believes that letlive. can access that utopian, inexplicable transcendental quality that allows art
to reach budding revolutionaries the way books and other oratory cannot.

letlive. continually refuse to be constrainedby the ideas of "scene" - whether letlive. is punk, metalcore, indie, rap, whatever, Butler finds these labels to be another form of systematic oppression. He grew up with Black Flag and Circle Jerks as well as 2Pacalypse and Xzibit's At the Speed of Life - it's all revolutionary counterculture music to him.

"Punk is more an ideology than a scene dictated by what pants you wear. What are you saying, what do you believe in? That's to me a better identifier." If their new album, If I'm the Devil needs a genre, Butler would call it "revolutionary counterculture music" , like a more emotional Rage Against the Machine, or Public Enemy with more inclusive politics. Butler grew up as a skater disillusioned with what he saw as a heteronormative, patriarchal punk rock scene until the older kids showed him black artists such as Bad Brains, Living Colour and Fishbone. "Punk rock is inclusive if you want to be included," Butler states, recognizing how letlive. can speak for people who feel they lack representation.

This is the debut and next link in the chain of cerebral hip-hop by the proteges of politically minded rapper Sage Francis. Beat artist DiViNCi plays his MPC with the passion and intensity of a Hendrix or a Townsend, filling the stage with an astonishing sonic landscape. These athletic beats form the perfect setting for MC Swamburger's flow; a tongue-twisting, machine-gunning cadence whose precision is surgical in both rhythm and message. talent and impressive instincts."
    - Pitchfork

THE NEXT BIG THING. Such a label serves at once as a curse and a blessing, for messianic crowns come studded with thorns, and chalices emblazoned with this inscription are often tainted with poison. Custodians of the title can implode under the weight of expectation, or fail to bottle further the magic of that first hit single.

Not so for English art-rock trio London Grammar. Hannah Reid, Dot Major and Dan Rothman have been careful to avoid the dangers of over-exposure in the nine months since first single "Hey Now" seared itself into the collective consciousness of the blogosphere, instead releasing work after work of gradually escalating beauty from the safety of the shadows.

That was until Disclosure dropped their album Settle, at which point London Grammar vocalist Hannah Reid came to wider attention on sweeping album closer "Help Me Lose My Mind," where her spine-tingling soulful singing combined with the wash of swooning synths and downbeat 80's percussion. It will come as no surprise to fans of this track to learn that Reid's magnificent vocals are integral to London Grammar's sound, serving as the perfect accompaniment to the band's discreet production and minimalist instrumentation.

The same words will be used ceaselessly to describe Reid's vocals in coming weeks - "haunting", "brooding", "ethereal". Yet none of these terms adequately conveys the way her voice melts and evolves to suit the temperament and melody of each song on If You Wait, flowing like molten gold on "Interlude", or acquiring the varied textures of a vast swathe of satin and silk on "Nightcall". Her vocal is always underscored by an enduring brittle beauty and an underlying otherworldliness, as if she honed her craft singing amidst the forests of Lothlórien, or some far-flung corner of Westeros.

Though her voice may be otherworldly, the thematic concerns of the album are very much rooted in this world - youth's timeless preoccupation with finding not only love but the nature of ourselves. These soundscapes and the lyrics that populate them are characterised by broken hearts, fractured dreams and people falling in and out of love. Perhaps the most telling lyric of all is on "Wasting My Young Years", with the heart-breaking concession of "I've heard it takes some time to get it right".

The album's first single and opening track "Hey Now" has lost none of its grandeur and remains as devastatingly beautiful as it did when released at the tail-end of 2012. It's the main track on If You Wait that justifies the comparisons with The XX - especially in terms of how the band forges the space and atmosphere from reverb-tinged percussion and Rothman's discreet, almost-spectral guitars. "Wasting My Young Years" further showcases how perfectly the band balance the interplay between Reid's vocal and the twinkling keys and subtle instrumentation that floats around it, allowing it to drive the song and dictate proceedings but never once to feel overbearing.

Latest single "Strong" mirrors the intricately weaved threadwork of sounds and elaborately crafted sense of space showcased on the opening track, but utilises a more hypnotic vocal from Reid that manages to sound simultaneously heart-rending and inspiring. Elsewhere "Interlude" is as refined a paean to love and devotion as you will hear all year, matching dual melancholic piano lines and subtly building percussion to Reid's sublime wistful singing.

There is not a single weak track, but amongst the many highlights is a spellbinding cover of French house artist Kavinsky's "Nightcall". There's a particularly gorgeous moment around the two-minute-thirty-second mark when the instrumentation is peeled away and, for a few seconds, you think the song will end - before Reid's dazzling vocal is re-introduced amidst a haze of swirling keys. It's nothing short of transcendent. Also, the flawless sequencing leads to an album that begs you to drink in its beauty by listening to it from beginning to end.

This is an enthralling, stunning, deeply emotive album that perfectly marries understated electronica to sublime vocals and melodies. In a year dominated by titanic LPs, London Grammar have not only made the most perfectly formed debut album of the year - they've made one of the best LPs, period. [A-]

St. Louis beat maker Andrew Jernigan a.k.a Phaseone gained
quite a following after his early remixes and mixtapes began
creating buzz around the internet in 2009. These releases
included noteworthy cuts of Animal Collective, Panda Bear,
and Burial. That same year Phaseone released his debut LP
"Thanks But No Thanks" as a free download showing that he's
not too shabby at creating his own tracks as well. Jernigan
recently relocated to Brooklyn, NY to work on his forthcoming
LP "If I Tell U" due out spring 2013 on Adult Swim's Williams
Street label (home to Killer Mike's critically acclaimed R.A.P.
Music LP and Metalocalypse's Dethklok). With this new
release Phaseone further expands the boundaries between
producer and artist creating a swirling universe and unique
aesthetic that is distinctly his own.

    If You Have Ghost EP

Earlier 2013, the flamboyant Swedish metal band Ghost B.C. - or, if you don't care about the only-in-America legal silliness that led to the name change, just Ghost - linked up with producer and famous rock dude Dave Grohl and covered Abba's "I'm A Marionette." Now, Ghost releases an EP of covers called If You Have Ghost; it'll also include their version of Depeche Mode's "Waiting For The Night."

For the EP's title track, the band once again hooked up with Grohl, who produced their version of "If You Have Ghosts," a 1981 freakout from the troubled Texan psych-rock survivor Roky Erickson.

    If You Knew My Mind

Capps is a southern rock troubadour with an eye on the human condition and a pen to write about it. -- OffBeat Magazine

Grayson Capps is like a whiskey-soaked, back-alley poet sired by Tom Waits and Robert Johnson. -- Razor Magazine

It takes less than 30 seconds for the debut album from this New Orleans-based singer/songwriter to pull you in. A lone harmonica blows over a softly strummed electric guitar as a lazy rhythm section props up the beat. Grayson Capps' weathered voice then enters: Yesterday was a very fine day indeed, I got a pint of beer, went outside and brushed my teeth. That about sums up this impressive yet unassuming bluesy debut from one of the many musicians who sound like what New Orleans feels like: languid, a little grimy and dangerous, but with a sense of history and self that wafts up from the streets. Those who listened closely to the soundtrack of the movie A Love Song for Bobby Long will recognize Capps, as his music was used to excellent effect in that rather obscure flick. In fact, Lorraine's Song, the most recognizable tune on that soundtrack, is a Capps composition and gets a suitably impressive and subtle performance here, as does the song whose title inspired the movie. He has a way with a drowsy melody, and after a few spins, these tracks gradually take hold. Certainly anyone who has explored the back streets of New Orleans will recognize the downtrodden characters who populate this album. Capps mythologizes their misery and sadness in songs that are heartfelt and edgy, but he never shortchanges melodies in exchange for gritty, often poetic lyrics. Guitar solos, such as the one in the Crazy Horse-styled Buckshot, are short, tight, and succinct, just like the band that ably supports Capps. His voice sounds like he just woke up and started singing before his first cup of coffee, but that adds to the effect. The album loses a little steam as it winds down, yet this is still a stirring first effort. It conveys the sense, sounds, and dark allure of New Orleans and many of its residents more effectively than a stroll through the French Quarter.
