    In Step

The Grammy Award Winning album In Step is Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Troubles fourth studio, originally released in 1989. Stevie Ray had recently become sober, after years of drug and alcohol abuse. This is a recurring theme on the album.

The response to In Step was very positive. Allmusic rated In Step 5 out of 5 stars claiming it's fully realized, presenting every facet of Vaughan's musical personality, yet it still soars with a sense of discovery... and Lou Reed selected In Step as one of his picks in 1989. While the album reached number 33 in the Billboard 200, the single Crossfire reached number 1 in the Mainstream Rock Chart.

Unfortunately In Step proved to be Stevie Rays last album with Double Trouble before his untimely death, caused by a helicopter crash, in 1990.

On 1989's In Step, Vaughan found his own songwriting voice, blending blues, soul, and rock in unique ways, and writing with startling emotional honesty. Yes, there are a few covers, all well chosen, but the heart of the album rests in the songs he cowrote with Doyle Bramhall, the man who penned the Soul to Soul highlight "Change It." Fueled by a desire to make up for lost time and delight in his reawakened commitment to life and sobriety, Vaughan turned in what many consider his greatest artistic statement, an album ensconced in sweat, soul, determination, and not an ounce of filler.

"Travis Walk" offers a heady rush of flat-picking, "The House is Rockin'" is full-tilt roots-boogie, "Let Me Love You Baby" and "Leave My Girl Alone" are sweet blues epiphanies, and the nine-minute instrumental "Riviera Paradise" is a truly soulful mix of blues and jazz. By now, just a year before his untimely death, Vaughan had also tamed his bawling voice into a rich instrument. In short, this 1989 session is Vaughan at his artistic peak.

In Step remains one of the five greatest blues records of the past quarter century. There's not a link in this chain that wasn't absolute first-rate. The absolute best that money can buy. We're passionate about the blues AND Stevie Ray and the passion shows up here in spades.

    Step Back

Blues legend Johnny Winter will release a new studio album, Step Back, via Megaforce Records. The album, the followup to 2011's Roots, will find Winter exploring a more aggressive vintage-blues style.

The album also will feature a host of special guests, including Eric Clapton, Ben Harper, Billy Gibbons, Joe Perry, Dr. John, Leslie West, Brian Setzer and Joe Bonnamassa.

"If there's good people, other good musicians, people enjoy it. I just love it, Winter says. [Step Back] is just to bring it to the people of today who haven't listened to the old music. It's better than anything they hear today.

Produced by Winter's guitarist, Paul Nelson, Step Back opens with "Unchain My Heart," which features Winter and his band joined by the Blues Brothers horns. ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons is featured on "Where Can You Be."

"I never had the opportunity to jam with him [in the Sixties and Seventies]," Gibbons says. "I was content to remain in awe and admiration."

"If it weren't for Johnny Winter, I would have never picked up the guitar," adds Aerosmith's Joe Perry, who joins Winter on Lightnin' Hopkins' "Mojo Hand."

Other highlights include Winter's guitar and vocal trade-offs with Harper on Willie Dixon's "Can't Hold Out (Talk to Me Baby)," Winter and Clapton's rendition of Bobby Bland's "Don't Want No Woman" and Winter and Dr. John honoring Fats Domino with "Blue Monday."

"When you hear that sound come out of that Firebird guitar, you know it can be the one and only Johnny Winter," says Setzer, who is featured on Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's "Okie Dokie Stomp."

First Time 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl & Gatefold Cover Presentation

Mastered Impeccably By Joe Reagoso At Friday Music & Capitol Mastering

Known for their ability of churning out hit songs, top charting albums and sell-out shows across the globe, The Doobie Brothers continue to be a force in the music business garnering them success now for over four decades. They were also in the forefront of making excellent sounding recordings, utilizing their masterful skills in the studios, and their amazing catalog of albums have all stood the test of time.

1980 was a huge year for the Grammy Award winning band as they took their Bay Area soul and rock driven sounds to a further dimension thanks to the hits on their ninth smash LP in a row with One Step Closer.

Produced by Ted Templeman, this multi-platinum event would go on to become one of the most successful albums by The Doobie Brothers as the LP gave them a huge top five single with the Michael McDonald tour de force Real Love.

The hard rockin' and soulful masterwork yielded more hits like the fine vocal work of the sorely missed Cornelius Bumpus (Moby Grape/Steely Dan) on Thank You Love and the hit single One Step Closer. Patrick Simmons as usual wails on lead guitar throughout with latest guitarist John McFee (Elvis Costello/Steve Miller) on tunes like Keep This Train-A-Rollin' and the rocker No Stoppin' Us Now.

Friday Music is proud once again to offer another installment in our popular Doobie Brothers 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series with their masterpiece One Step Closer. Impeccably mastered by Joe Reagoso (Doobie Brothers/Michael McDonald) from the original Warner Bros. tapes at Friday Music Studios and at Capitol Mastering, the top five Lp sounds incredibly rockin' and soulful as you remember it.

As an added anniversary bonus, we are presenting the audiophile limited edition album in a first time gatefold cover, with artwork elements not seen in years, enhancing your Doobie Brothers listening experience even further.

    One Step Beyond

One Step Beyond... is the 1979 debut album by the British ska group Madness. It was ranked 90th in a 2005 survey held by British television's Channel 4 to determine the 100 greatest albums of all time.

The album peaked at number 2 and remained in the UK Albums Chart for over a year.

It was the first album produced by the team of Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley, who would go on to work with artists such as Elvis Costello and the Attractions, Morrissey, Dexys Midnight Runners and They Might Be Giants, as well as producing all but one of Madness' subsequent albums.

The title track, released as a single, was originally written and recorded by the Jamaican ska musician Prince Buster. The spoken line, Don't watch that, watch this in the intro is from another Prince Buster song, The Scorcher.
It was their second single after The Prince which was a tribute song to this musician.

    Giant Steps

Ranked 102/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Giant Steps was recorded in 1959 by John Coltrane. This was the first album where all songs recorded were original compositions of Coltrane. The album showcases Coltrane's masterful improvisational style that is now known as sheets of sound. Giant Steps is often used as a practice piece because of its chord progression, and is seen by jazz musicians as the standard for modern jazz, also being used as a gauge of measuring a musician's improvisational skill. Soon after the release of Giant Steps, Coltrane ventured into modal jazz, so this album is often viewed as his farewell to bebop.

    Dynamite Steps

Greg Dulli and Co. Return With Their Most Ambitious, Cohesive Record to Date

    Extraordinary Singing and Transcendent Arrangements

Whenever youre here, youre alive are the first words sung on Dynamite Steps, the fifth album from Greg Dullis Twilight Singers collective, and the groups first in five years. The Twilight Singers previous release, the acclaimed confessional opus Powder Burns, came out in 2006.

Dynamite Steps is clearly the next chapter, a whole new level of catharsis and progress, evocatively cramming all the highs and lows of the maverick singer/songwriters past half-decade into unexpected sonic trapdoors. Shot on location at various locales significant to Dullis life, you can hear the sense of place emanating up from the grooves of Dynamite Steps. Here, the weary nighttime decadence of New Orleans rubs up against the oppressive sunshine of Los Angeles and the desolation of Joshua Trees desert vistas.

Dynamite Steps explores the thin line between life and death, mortality and immortality, resignation and celebration that mythical moment when your life flashes before your eyes, drawn out here over the course of eleven songs. The albums forty-three minutes prove an unflinching odyssey through the dark side, but one thats ultimately redemptive in its scope and power.

This fully integrated Step-up Transformer/VPI Interface Box was specifically created to improve the performance of your VPI turntable when used with a low output Moving Coil Phono Cartridge. It replaces the standard VPI Interface Box with a unit that combines the top of the line Bob's Devices exclusive "Blue Series" CineMag 1131 Step Up Transformers with the VPI Interface Box. This unit eliminates a set of interconnects and connectors in the phono playback circuit. The path between the moving coil cartridge and the phono preamplifier is as critical as it is sensitive due to the low voltage and current being transmitted. Further, this path is also subject to RF and other interference. You will hear the difference by streamlining this path - "the fewer stones in the road the smoother the ride."

This Bob's Devices VPI-SUT replaces the standard VPI interface box on the following arms where the interface box is directly attached to the tonearm base/platform : JMW 12.7, JMW 12.6, JMW 12.5, JMW 9T, JMW 9S, JMW C2, JMW C3, Classic, JMW 10, and JMW 10.5i (and other heritage JMW arms - contact us for specific applications). It will not work where the interface box is mounted directly to the plinth.

    Mono Remaster

History will undoubtedly enshrine this disc as a watershed the likes of which may never truly be appreciated. Giant Steps bore the double-edged sword of furthering the cause of the music as well as delivering it to an increasingly mainstream audience.

Although this was John Coltrane's debut for Atlantic, he was concurrently performing and recording with Miles Davis. Within the space of less than three weeks, Coltrane would complete his work with Davis and company on another genre-defining disc, Kind of Blue, before commencing his efforts on this one.

Coltrane (tenor sax) is flanked by essentially two different trios. Recording commenced in early May of 1959 with a pair of sessions that featured Tommy Flanagan (piano) and Art Taylor (drums), as well as Paul Chambers -- who was the only band member other than Coltrane to have performed on every date. When recording resumed in December of that year, Wynton Kelly (piano) and Jimmy Cobb (drums) were instated -- replicating the lineup featured on Kind of Blue, sans Miles Davis of course.

At the heart of these recordings, however, is the laser-beam focus of Coltrane's tenor solos. All seven pieces issued on the original Giant Steps are likewise Coltrane compositions. He was, in essence, beginning to rewrite the jazz canon with material that would be centered on solos -- the 180-degree antithesis of the art form up to that point. These arrangements would create a place for the solo to become infinitely more compelling. This would culminate in a frenetic performance style that noted jazz journalist Ira Gitler accurately dubbed sheets of sound. Coltrane's polytonal torrents extricate the amicable and otherwise cordial solos that had begun decaying the very exigency of the genre -- turning it into the equivalent of easy listening.

He wastes no time as the disc's title track immediately indicates a progression from which there would be no looking back. Line upon line of highly cerebral improvisation snake between the melody and solos, practically fusing the two. The resolute intensity of Countdown does more to modernize jazz in 141 seconds than many artists do in their entire careers. Tellingly, the contrasting and ultimately pastoral Naima was the last tune to be recorded, and is the only track on the original long-player to feature the Kind of Blue quartet. What is lost in tempo is more than recouped in intrinsic melodic beauty.

The Reissue Also Features Essays From Easter, Ken Stringfellow (The Posies, Big Star), And Franklin Bruno (The Village Voice, Salon.com)

Their final studio album - remastered and expanded! Following up 1987's Lolita Nation (whose reissue appeared on numerous year-end "best of" lists for 2016) would be no easy task for Game Theory. But, Scott Miller and company were certainly up for the task.

Re-teaming with producer Mitch Easter (R.E.M., Marshall Crenshaw, Velvet Crush), 2 Steps From The Middle Ages was released in 1988 and showed the band had no shortage of energy, experimentation, and excellent material.

The first pressing of this LP reissue, on vinyl for the first time since its initial release, comes on translucent orange colored vinyl. Packaging includes rare and previously unseen photos from the band's photographer, Robert Toren, as well as essays from Easter, Ken Stringfellow (The Posies, Big Star), and Franklin Bruno (The Village Voice, Salon.com).

The band's drummer, Gil Ray, who was involved in all aspects of the Game Theory reissue series including this title, sadly passed away earlier this year. This reissue is lovingly dedicated to him.

In 1963, Miles Davis was at a transitional point in his career, without a regular group and wondering what his future musical direction would be. At the time he recorded the music heard on this disc, he was in the process of forming a new band, as can be seen from the personnel: tenor saxophonist George Coleman, Victor Feldman (who turned down the job) and Herbie Hancock on pianos, bassist Ron Carter, and Frank Butler and Tony Williams on drums. Recorded at two separate sessions, this set is highlighted by the classic Seven Steps To Heaven, Joshua and slow passionate versions of Basin Street Blues and Baby Won't You Please Come Home.

With a Cuban-American lead singer, garage-band ferocity, an intense live show and a deep love of both romance and pure country to go with the polyrhythmic beats they were raised on, the Mavericks were unlikely superstars. And yet, they distilled country's essences, bulked them up with big, raucous sound, then broke ground for the format that saw people from all walks of life, many cultures and some surprising places lining up for hits like Here Comes The Rain, Crying Shame, Dance The Night Away and All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down.

Twenty years later, the little-band-that-could returns, more soulful and innovative than ever. For their first sessions in almost a decade, it was spontaneous combustion; literally, the band falling into step with the euphoria they were known for. And they built quite an album from there. It took life for us to get to this point - everybody was so free. From the first notes, it sounded like an explosion of sound; we went wehere the songs took us with a singularity of purpose. We came into make music as grown-ups, to make music as men, says lead singer Raul Malo.

    In Decay

In Decay provides a fascinating alternative routemap for the idiosyncratic journeys of New Jersey producer Seth Haley - aka Com Truise - through the history of electronic music. A compilation of unreleased, early recordings, In Decay encompasses 13 tracks that have previously been either only available as demos online or are entirely unheard tracks dating from before Haley's official releases - his debut Cyanide Sisters EP, its follow-up full-length Galactic Melt, and last year's Fairlight EP.

While the '80s-influenced synth sounds, rubbery basslines and sci-fi flavors that inform Haley's later work are in full effect here, they're assembled in manners different enough to make this both a fine record in its own right, and also a fascinating insight into the development of the distinctive Com Truise sound. It also finds the producer exploring a number of facets of that sound, from 8-bit influenced experimentalism to distinctly danceable beats - often within the confines of the same track.

Controlpop, for instance, announces itself with an intro that sounds like a Commodore 64 being hit with a hammer, but resolves into slow liquid synthfunk that recalls Galactic Melt highlights like VHS Sex and Flightwave. Its slow-burning dance vibe is shared by several other tracks - Colorvision and Yxes, amongst others - while elsewhere, Haley drops the tempo and channels the psychedelic cosmic meanderings of forebears like Tangerine Dream and Popol Vuh. Dreambender sounds like it should be soundtracking a voyage into uncharted digital innerspace, while Video Arkade cruises along on a woozy rising-and-falling synthline that's like drifting on some sort of virtual reality rollercoaster. Like all Haley's work, it's like stepping into a strange, digital parallel world - a place constructed out of sounds both immediately familiar and yet somehow rendered thoroughly fresh, and a place that's worth staying for quite some time.

    Take It All In

Austin's own The Steps will release Take It All In, produced by Chris 'Frenchie' Smith (JET, Dandy Warhols, Explosions in the Sky). The EP distills the band's '60s influenced garage rock to its most potent and frenetic form.

Formed in 2005 while still in high school, The Steps first achieved international success with releases and tours in the U.K. and Japan. Launched by a strong Texas following, the band has shared the stage with Bob Dylan, The Raconteurs, and the Black Keys.

Born under the influence of classic rock in the Live Music Capital of the World, The Steps chisel through modern rock with '60s sensibilities. The band made their recording debut with a 7 vinyl single brought by Young and Lost Club Records (U.K.), followed by a tour of London. Their eponymous full length, produced by Chris 'Frenchie' Smith (Jet, Dandy Warhols) set up a short tour of Japan, where the band made several television and radio appearances.

    Danger In The Club

While Danger In The Club, the follow-up to Palma Violets' barnstorming
debut 180, certainly trades on the primal and joyous hook-laden
rock of their debut, their sophomore LP finds the band with a new
sonic looseness, revealing far more expansive influences than the
still-quite-young quartet had on their debut.

This is the sound of a preternaturally talented group of musicians and
songwriters continuing to develop, while keeping their focus squarely
on the type of well-crafted, singalong anthems that have earned them
the adoration of fans and critics. Produced by the legendary John
Leckie, Danger In The Club is a brilliant step forward.

    Back In The USA

Ranked 451/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

"Back In The USA" was the second album by Detroit's legendary MC5 but the first to be recorded in the studio. Originally released in 1970 this album takes a step back from the raw in your face sound of their classic debut "Kick Out The Jams" for a more focused, tighter approach. Their sophomore effort features a fine selection of originals such as "The Human Being Lawnmower", "The American Ruse" and "Shakin' Street" plus choice covers of Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti" and Chuck Berry's "Back In The USA". A top 500 pick for best albums of all time from NME and Rolling Stone now reissued on 180 gram vinyl from 4 Men With Beards.

    Kids In The Street

Kids In The Street is the 7th and latest album from American roots troubadour, Justin Townes Earle. After marrying, moving to various corners of the country and continuous touring with both full band and solo, Earle made time to reflect on the past few years and find new clarity. With Kids In The Street, he made a conscious decision to work with a producer for the first time in his now decade-long career. Earle made the trip to Omaha, Nebraska to work with Mike Mogis (First Aid Kit, M.Ward, Connor Oberst) at ARC Studios. Together, they handpicked musicians to create a new sound and environment for the songs that speaks to Justin's roots, musically and personally. This creative collaboration, paired with Justin's longtime guitarist Paul Niehaus, has resulted in an album that takes a big step forward.

    Holidays In Europe

One Little Indian's Direct Metal Masters Reissue Series!

1986's Holidays in Europe, was the third and final album released by the Icelandic post-punk group K.U.K.L. featuring Bjork and Einar Orn (pre-Sugacubes). This album was more complex in comparison to the The Eye, with the folksy and pseudo-oriental flutes, bells and pipes of that previous album abandoned in favor of keyboards and samples here.

For all the audiophiles out there One Little Indian is reissuing 38 classic albums using the newest technology in vinyl manufacturing; Half Speed Direct Metal Mastering. The groove is cut directly in copper metal. Transient response is greatly improved. Stampers are plated directly from the DMM Copper Master, eliminating two of the three plating steps required for lacquers. In short, DMM yields better detail resolution and a lower noise ratio. This is especially good for long play albums, or audiophile material. All albums are remastered direct from the original master tapes and pressed on 45RPM heavy weight 200g virgin vinyl audiophile discs. Your chance to pick up classic One Little Indian albums in the most lavish vinyl format available.
