    Undersea

The Antlers' debut on ANTI continues the Brooklyn trio's evolution begun with the acclaimed albums Hospice and Burst Apart. Their new 4-song EP, Undersea was recorded in early 2012.

In the band's own words: "In January, after returning home from a year of touring, we started something new. We knew not what it would become and had no purpose but to see what could happen in two and a half months of recording in our studio. We started from nowhere, and inadvertently tapped into a new beginning, the despair of Hospice and the subsequent recovery in Burst Apart felt like a closed chapter, and we suddenly felt the immense freedom to change the subject entirely. We let our creative instincts lead us forward, and they brought us here, to Undersea, an EP in length, but beyond that in scope. It's an attempt to begin to express and communicate something bigger, something outside of ourselves and harder to explain.

The record begins with the dream of a peaceful flood, followed by an existential re-evaluation in the face of massive, all-encompassing change. We take a deep breath in, a slow breath out, and take stock of where we're at. Undersea is the feeling of suspension. Memories suspended in time and space, energy suspended in the air around us. It's the serenity of drifting off to sleep or of sinking to the bottom of the ocean. Time slows and stretches.

We've searched for sounds that are patient and meditative, mellow and colorful and intended to calm. There's a subtle but insistent pulse that leaves room for the music to breathe and expand. These songs are not in a hurry, and they take their time to unfold. In one sense it is familiar and terrestrial. But there's also a strange, fantastic, and largely as-yet-unknown world below the surface. The result is a kind of oceanic lucid dream of the future."

Eric Clapton and Duane Allman in the Same Band for the Only Time: Derek and the Dominos' Layla a Timeless Batch of Fire-Pot Blues, Poignant Gospel, Searing Rock, and Lustful Emotion

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes and Pressed at RTI: Mobile Fidelity 180g 2LP of Layla Is the Definitive-Sounding Analog Edition, Presents Music With Immersive Detail and Realism

The reputation of Derek and the Dominos' Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, their lone record, precedes it. Eric Clapton performing in the studio with Duane Allman, Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle, and more for the only time. A batch of fire-pot blues, poignant gospel, and searing rock - all birthed from the leader's insatiable lust for his friend George Harrison's wife. Now, experience it all, and one of the most famous guitar solos and codas in history, in unsurpassed sound courtesy of this quintessential Mobile Fidelity reissue.

Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's 180g 2LP set exposes the brilliance of Tom Dowd's original production and the scope of the virtuoso musicians' playing. You've never been closer to the aching vocals, stinging leads, tormented emotions, or wowing intensity that grace every track. Clapton's tones emerge with unprecedented soulfulness. Afforded their own space in the mix, Allman's slide-guitar passages crackle with urgency. All-important sonic components such as soundstaging, imaging, and dynamics transport you to the actual event. Mobile Fidelity's analog version testifies on behalf of why fans deemed Clapton god.

Then, of course, there's the title track - crowned the 27th greatest song of all time by Rolling Stone. What to say about the outro - arguably the most famous, passionately penetrating, visceral, double-edged guitar solo in history. Clapton's strings weeping with longing, hope, regret, unrequited love. It deserves the best-possible sonic platform, and receives it here, on a pressing that brings Slowhand's every finger moment into great relief. Get inside Clapton's head, burrow into the conflicted emotions fluttering in his heart as he pines for his another man's wife, and in the process, produces an album that forever lives in the souls of anyone who's ever loved and lost.

Clapton's pained yearning permeates everything here. Works such as the swampy Tell the Truth, the pleading Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?, and blues-drenched Have You Ever Loved a Woman? attest to his raw-nerve discomfort, guilt, and desire. He leaves teardrops on the microphone stand and blood on the floor, singing and playing as if his life depends on it and if, by some miracle, the music will serve as both a confessional and apology to Harrison. It's all magnified by Clapton achieving a spiritual and sonic oneness with his band, which matches his high-stakes precision with a rolling, tumbling looseness.

Allman adds firepower and achieves a still-unrivaled simpatico bond with Clapton, but each participant soars. Consider: The call-and-response, Sam and Dave-derived vocal exchanges between Whitlock and Clapton. Rich, creamy, Southern-stoked blends of R&B, blues, and soul. Vibrant tapestries in which the pianos, bass, guitars, and voices explode with ravishing fervor, naturalism, and desperation. Indeed, maybe a combo this great was only intended one shot in the studio. Perhaps the paralyzing degree of potency on display here, and the musicianship that remains the standard by which any blues-rock is judged, is meant to be preserved as one standalone record. Whatever the case, this is the analog version to own.

    Laughing Stock

Virtually ignored upon its initial release, Laughing Stock continues to grow in stature and influence by leaps and bounds. Picking up where Spirit of Eden left off, the album operates outside of the accepted sphere of rock to create music which is both delicate and intense; recorded with a large classical ensemble, it defies easy categorization, conforming to very few structural precedents.

    April In Paris

Count Basie's band endured because of its leader's uncanny ability to put together fresh arrangements and strong soloists while maintaining the band's unique devotion to swing; this CD is among the most enduring of the big band recordings of the 1950s. The title tune is present in a justifiably famous rendition, a performance of swaggering swing and passion that was arranged by organist Wild Bill Davis. Frank Foster's Shiny Stockings, now a jazz standard, made its debut here, while Joe Newman's Midgets recasts the band as a bop combo. Throughout the recording are terrific solos by trumpeters Thad Jones and Newman and tenor saxophonists Foster and Frank Wess, all basking in the band's glorious swing. --Stuart Broomer

Basie scored a smash in '56 with April in Paris , and this mid-'50s LP (featuring the original Basie band) became an instant big-band classic. A slew of alternate takes join that hit!

    High, Low And In Between

High, Low And In Between was Townes Van Zandt's fifth album, originally released by Poppy Records in the fall of 1971. It was a release that saw Townes becoming the songwriter revered today. An album full of brilliant original material including "You Are Not Needed Now," Blue Ridge Mountains," and "To Live Is To Fly," it opened eyes and ears to his abilities. His backing band included folks like Larry Carlton-who would play on Joni Mitchell's Court & Spark, accompany Steely Dan on The Royal Scam (playing that solo we all know and love on "Kid Charlemagne"), and who was a member of Jazz's elite Crusaders.

High, Low And In Between is-in the end-a classic Townes Van Zandt album. And one that should be reexamined. This gloriously remastered edition comes with liner notes from award-wining scribe Colin Escott, as well as on 180-gram vinyl-with the first 1,000 pressed on orange colored stock. (Future pressings will be on standard black vinyl).

Chicago's Rise Against might be seen as an outcast amongst its peers. Armed with The fury of classic punk acts such as Minor Threat & Bad Brains, they blend Intelligent vocals with a serious commitment to providing a positive alternative to the oft-dreary & disenchanted aura that engulfs most punk bands. There are so many bands that sing about negative things, & we kind of wanted to show people it's OK to voice your opinions & stay positive. We just wanted to be more productive, lyrically. - JOE PRINCIPE.

What guitarist Laurent Lebec has dubbed the most perfect synthesis of everything weve done to date, sonically, What We All Come To Need is a giant step forward within the complex, intricate, beautiful and crushing sound Pelican is famous for. The album features more guests than have ever appeared on a Pelican release before: Greg Anderson of sunn O))), Aaron Turner of Isis, Ben Verellen of Harkonen and Helms Alee and Allen Epley from The Life & Times and Shiner. Content-wise, Lebec says there is a current of inspiration that feels particular to each albums music and titles. Though we lack a singer, the song names are often conceptual. This new album speaks to a rapidly decaying world, the fulfillment we find in each other, as well as the resolve to move beyond disillusionment.

Originally released in November 1960, Ballads by Cobb, as its title suggests, is all slow ballads, putting the emphasis on the Texas tenor's warm tone. Cobb spent most of the 1960s playing back in his native Texas but he returned to the national scene in 1973 and during his final 15 years engaged in many exciting tenor battles, showing that there were few tougher Texas tenors than the legendary Arnett Cobb.

    Got Soul

Pedal-steel virtuoso Robert Randolph returns with his new album, Got Soul. The album reaffirms that Randolph and his Family Band have truly evolved into one of the most exciting and innovative outfits in contemporary music. Got Soul takes stock of Randolph's past as a church musician as it pushes the band forward into new places. There is no shortage of originality on the album with songs that run the gamut from gospel numbers to deep, funky grooves to incendiary rock-and-soul jams. The hauntingly exquisite Heaven's Calling features Randolph on solo steel while guest vocalists Darius Rucker and Anthony Hamilton lend their golden voices to Love Do What It Do and She Got Soul respectively. I Thank You, the 60s Sam & Dave R&B smash, is completely re-imagined in the hands of the Family Band and Snarky Puppy's very on Cory Henry.

Stepping out of the shadows in 2007 when just sixteen years old, Jokers stock has risen dramatically since. Aided by him releasing de¬fining cuts like Digidesign, The Vision (Let Me Breathe) and Tron, he now finds himself thick in the recent resurgence of British elec¬tronic music.

With the world traveled and a deal with 4AD signed, hes finally ready to appease his waiting public and release his debut album, The Vision.

Slaughterhouse (Here Come The Lights) highlights the young producers maturing sound, continuing to playfully subvert pop conventions. The track also features a bombastic and memorable vocal performance from Silas from Turboweekend.

On the flip, My Trance Girl is a futuristic six-minute instrumental, more in line with what first hooked Joker fans; its muscular vintage-Sega aping synths and sharp drum snaps a nod to his roots in Bristols fecund dance music scene.

    Ski Mask

Islands' latest, Ski Mask, percolates with the kind of polymorphous pop and hooky, left-of-center rock songs that have long been the bands stock in trade.

"This record is really about being angry. For better or worse, this record kind of sums up my experience thus far with being in a band. I feel like we're kind of at a crossroads and this record is kind of me just declaring forfeiture in some ways. Like the third act of a movie-just after it seems like all hope is lost, that's when the big breakthrough moment happens. For Islands, this is us waiting for the breakthrough moment."

"This record is kind of a culmination of all the different things we've done over the years. It's basically a melting pot of all those sounds. So much of this record is about identity-specifically, the quest for finding out your own identity. ... All of these feelings and ideas that have been bubbling up over the course of four previous albums finally came to the surface on this one. This record is like a summation of Islands, everything we've ever done distilled into one record. It's basically an essential introduction to Islands-it's everything we've ever been about."

In 1960, the free jazz pioneered by Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Horace Tapscott and a very few others was rejected by many musicians and most listeners. For the visionary saxophonist, clarinetist and flutist Eric Dolphy, it was simply new music fed by the mainstream, a logical extension of the jazz tradition. In Far Cry without leaving form behind, he incorporated the spirit of adventure and abandon with which free jazz at its best infused freshness into jazz. Recording with a pianoless quartet that used Ron Carter's cello as the other melody instrument, Dolphy worked from chord patterns developed within structures that depart from ordinary 32-bar jazz and popular song forms. He used 30-bar, 35-bar and 18-bar structures, but he also observed standard practice with 12-bar blues, "Serene." Dolphy's speech-like improvisations and Carter's bowed or plucked cello solos soar over the impeccable and responsive accompaniments of bassist George Duvivier and drummer Roy Haynes.

    Plastic Letters

Plastic Letters was the second and final Blondie album to be produced by Richard Gottehrer. Denis, a cover of the Randy & the Rainbows' 1963 hit Denise, was a hit all over Europe, reaching #2 in March 1978 in the United Kingdom, and was also a hit in Australia, reaching #19. (I'm Always Touched by Your) Presence, Dear was the second single from the album, reaching #10 in the UK in May 1978. The song was written by the band's original bass guitar player Gary Valentine, shortly before he left for a solo career prior to the album being recorded (which necessitated Chris Stein playing bass as well as guitar). In fact, during recording, Blondie were still at their old label, Private Stock Records. The album peaked at #10 in the UK and has been certified Platinum by the BPI.

Presented here for the first time as a Deluxe, multi-album set, this unique deluxe edition includes three LPs and a beautiful glossy booklet, featuring photos by Thierry Le Goues. With instrumentals and rare remixes and B-Sides, this is the ultimate way to celebrate a visionary project that changed the music world 25 years ago.

    G. Love & Special Sauce are a Philadelphia-based trio whose laid-back, sloppy blues sound is quite unique, as it encompasses the sound/production of classic R&B and recent rap artists (the Beastie Boys, in particular). The group is composed of G. Love (born Garrett Dutton) on guitar/vocals/harmonica, Jeff Clemens on drums, and Jim Prescott on upright bass. (All Music Guide)

For nearly a quarter-century, beginning in 1950, tenor saxophonist Gene Ammons (1925-1974) was among the brightest stars in the Prestige Records firmament. Whether leading, or partaking in, one of Prestige's jam sessions, immersing himself in the organ-dominated blues and gospel grooves that in the 1950s came to be called "soul jazz," or digging deep for heart-rending ballads, Ammons was multiply masterful. And in 1960, leading a quintet featuring the impeccable pianist Tommy Flanagan, plus Ray Barretto's piquant congas, he produced the insuperable Boss Tenor.

From the blues that drips from "Hittin' the Jug" and "Blue Ammons" to the infectious medium bounce of the standards "Close Your Eyes" and "Canadian Sunset," and from the sophisticated swing of "Stompin' at the Savoy" to the finger-poppin' bop of "Confirmation" and the after-hours balladry of "My Romance," Boss Tenor has something for everyone claiming to be a fan of modern jazz.

Intensity marked everything that Booker Ervin played. In his harmonic concept, slashing attack, and broad Texas sound, Ervin demanded attention and constantly built improvisations of searing drama and epic sweep. His primary legacy is a series of albums recorded for Prestige in the 1960s, of which this was his first, a riveting quintet recital where the alto saxophone of Frank Strozier supplies an urgent complement and the rhythm section is piloted by Horace Parlan, Ervin's longtime compatriot from their days together in the Charles Mingus Jazz Workshop and in a cooperative quartet that worked at Minton's Playhouse. In addition to four inspiring originals by Ervin and drummer Walter Perkins, the session features an eloquent reading of Fats Waller's immortal Black and Blue and an exploration of the show tune Just in Time. Both the latter and No Land's Man are included in two versions, the shorter of which were cut for release as a 45 single.

At the time he recorded this album in 1957, Arnett Cobb was in the process of rebounding from a serious automobile accident that broke both his legs. Cobb's indomitable spirit shines through in these tracks, whether he is calmly preaching on When My Dream Boat Comes Home, grooving down the Lonesome Road, or roaring through the song that is almost as closely associated with him as it is with Illinois Jacquet - Flying Home.

There are plenty of good blues, too, and pianist Ray Bryant's eloquence in this idiom is well exposed. Ray Barretto's conga adds another flavor to the rhythm section, especially on Cocktails for Two. With Ray Bryant, Wendell Marshall, Arthur Taylor and Ray Barretto.

How I Learned To Write Backwards

Available On Vinyl Again For The First Time In Over A Decade

The Aislers Set occupy an enviable place in the pop pantheon. Brimming with
drunken romanticism, sharp pop sensibilities, and timeless melodies, The Aislers
Set reveled in the history of great pop, spiking their classicist 60s-tinged tunes
with pure post-punk energy and originality of bands like the Fire Engines and
The June Brides. Every song is a meticulously constructed sound world, where the
arrangement and instrumentation sublimely and uncannily bring each tune to
    completeness.

Edgy and baroque, the band's final release How I Learned To Write Backwards
expertly wound together countless strands of pop history with personality and
atmosphere. Using the past as inspiration rather than blueprint, the echoes you
might hear of Phil Spector's Wall of Sound or Laura Nyro's soulful lyricism are
so well-integrated into The Aislers' sound that they're more akin to the spice in
the stew rather than the stock of the soup.

Although they stopped playing and recording together by 2004 due to life
commitments, their reputation has only grown; sporadic reunion shows and
mini-tours have been met with rapturous response. Alas, Suicide Squeeze is
proud to present the 2014 reissue of the seminal album "How I Learned To Write
Backwards" remastered and resequenced by John Greenham at Infrasonic
Sound in Los Angeles, and on vinyl LP again for the first time in over a decade.
The band will play a select set of shows this fall, and Suicide Squeeze and
Slumberland Records will be teaming up to co-release a new album of singles
and rarities to be released in early 2015.

    Los Nombres

One part War, two parts Santana, a dash of Motown, immersed in a rich Puerto Rican stock, Los Nombres were the undisputed kings of Northern Ohios rust-belt barrios. Following successive explosions of brown-eyed and latin soul in Los Angeles and New York in the mid and late 60s, Lorain, Ohios Boricua underdogs went on a recording tear in nearby Cleveland, going all-in on a series of no-budget recordings at Boddie and Way Out. With a voice that rivaled any on the Fania roster, Willie Marquez led the rotating cast of Latino teens through numerous underfunded recording sessions for the Day-Wood, Beth, and Lorain Sounds imprints, the lo-fi fruits of which are compiled here.
