    Lady Wood

LADY WOOD is the long-awaited successor to Tove Lo's landmark debut album of 2014, QUEEN OF THE CLOUDS, and is set for release via Island Records.

Similar to QUEEN OF THE CLOUDS, whose tracks were broken into three intimate chapters ('The Sex,' 'The Love,' 'The Pain') - LADY WOOD will be divided into two chapters: Fairy Dust and Fire Fade. Tove Lo describes them as "the emotional curves I go through when I'm chasing any kind of rush."

Fairy Dust refers to anticipation, as in the seductive slow-jam "Influence" (featuring rapper Wiz Khalifa), and the prowling title track, "Lady Wood". Tove Lo compares that anticipation to "when the adrenaline starts to kick in. It gives you butterflies. It's that tingling sensation of sex." Fire Fade captures the moments when that thrill starts to wear off, as in the swelling, unguarded "Keep It Simple" and the cocksure "WTF Love Is". As she says, "You feel a little bit uneasy. And you really want to chase that first feeling again."

The Concept Wood turntable furthers the sonic excellence of the award-winning Concept turntable. The Concept Wood uses a baltic birch, constrained layer plinth that is both visually attractive and sonically rich and smooth. The aluminum machined sub-platter and rear-mounted fine speed adjustments are an upgrade from the original Concept design. The Concept Wood is equipped with the Satisfy Black tonearm, which features a 3-point mechanical bearing, magnetic anti-skate, and hard-wired tonearm cable. You can upgrade to the Satisfy Carbon Fiber tonearm for enhanced musicality and imaging. A high-quality Clearaudio moving magnet (Concept MM) or moving coil (Concept MC) cartridge can be pre-mounted to complete this setup. The Concept is belt-driven by a low-noise, decoupled DC motor built into the baltic birch plinth. The platter is made of 30mm-thick polymer (POM), an engineering thermoplastic with a weighted rim for increased fly-wheel effect, providing greater speed stability. The Concept Wood plays at three speeds - 33rpm, 45rpm, and 78rpm - selectable by an Electronic Speed Control knob.

Twice the silver conductor content is what separates Wild Wood from Redwood. The increase of silver opens Wild Wood widely, increasing resolution, while at the same time continuing to remain relaxed and natural. The sense of ease and extension allows you to forget about your tasks at hand and drift off into musically-induced bliss.

SOLID PERFECT-SURFACE COPPER+/PERFECT-SURFACE SILVER (PSC+/PSS) CONDUCTORS: Wild Wood uses a carefully finessed combination of Perfect-Surface Copper+ and extremely high-purity Perfect-Surface Silver conductors in a Self-Shielding Counter-Spiral HyperLitz. Solid conductors prevent strand interaction, which is the greatest single source of distortion in an audio cable or an AC power cable. Surface quality is critical because a conductor can be considered as a rail-guide for both the electric fields within a conductor, and for the magnetic fields outside the conductor. The astonishingly smooth and pure Perfect-Surface eliminates harshness and greatly increases clarity compared to OFHC, OCC, 8N and other coppers. Extremely high-purity PSS further minimizes distortion caused by grain boundaries, which exist within any metal conductor.

CARBON-BASED MULTI-LAYER NOISE-DISSIPATION and CROSS-TALK-DISSIPATION SYSTEM (INSULATION): The negative conductors in Wild Wood are insulated with partially conductive Carbon-Loaded Polyethylene. This remarkable material damps radio-frequency garbage from being fed back into the amplifier. The sonic benefit is exactly the same reduction in "hash" and better dimensionality that comes whenever RF garbage is reduced in an audio circuit. Wild Wood uses Nitrogen-Injected Foamed-Polyethylene Insulation on its positive conductors because air absorbs next to no energy, and Polyethylene is low-loss and has a benign distortion profile. Thanks to all the air in Foamed-PE, it causes much less of the out-of-focus effect common to other materials.

DIELECTRIC-BIAS SYSTEM (DBS, US Pat #s 7,126,055 & 7,872,195 B1): All insulation slows down the signal on the conductor inside. When insulation is unbiased, it slows down parts of the signal differently, a big problem for very time-sensitive multi-octave audio. AudioQuest's DBS creates a strong, stable electrostatic field which saturates and polarizes (organizes) the molecules of the insulation. This minimizes both energy storage in the insulation and the multiple nonlinear time-delays that occur. Sound appears from a surprisingly black background with unexpected detail and dynamic contrast. The DBS battery packs will last for years. A test button and LED allow for the occasional battery check.

DOUBLE COUNTER-SPIRAL GEOMETRY: Wild Wood and the other AQ "Tree Feature" cables have an inner circular array of positive conductors spiraling in one direction. Around this inner group are the negative conductors spiraling in the opposite direction. Even while the positive and negative conductors are crossing each other instead of being parallel, the relationship between the positive and negative groups is fixed and non-changing, adhering to one of AudioQuest's most basic design tenets: consistency. The result is an astonishing clarity, like focusing a camera lens you had no idea was so far out of focus.

SPREAD-SPECTRUM TECHNOLOGY (SST): Any single size or shape of conductor has a specific distortion profile. Even though radially symmetrical conductors (solid round or tubular) have the fewest discontinuities, any conductor of a particular size does have a sonic signature. SST uses a precise combination of different size conductors in order to significantly reduce the audibility of these character flaws. The different SST-determined conductor sizes used in Wild Wood allow an exceptionally clear, clean and dynamic sound.

    Shifty Adventures In Nookie Wood

Shifty Adventures in Nookie Wood is a title to set tongues wagging and minds wondering, but for an album that seems born of a return to John's youth it seems safely apt in its mischievousness.

After nearly 50 years of making music it's still freshly evident that Cale draws from a make believe world first imagined by his young self. Track title 'Mothra' pays homage to the Japanese monster from Godzilla movies. As a boy practicing scales in grey skied Welsh valleys such fantastical flights of fancy must have been reassuring of the path that was potentially about to unfold for him. Lyrics reveal even more explicitly earlier incarnations of Cale and in the same song we relive an encounter with a local bully, You see me running, you see me climb, reading my books and always trying, laughing and teasing and I love to play, dreaming my dreams are never far away.

Elsewhere Cale's doing what he does best, guiding listeners through the places, politics, and people of the day. A wide range of human experience is reflected and often it's for the listener to dig deeper to find what's being documented. Sometimes however part of the tapestry is pulled soberingly into focus; when listening to 'Scotland Yard' while the Leveson enquiry plays out, it's all too easy to recognize the guilty.

As a producer Cale has reached a new plateau on this record. At the albums most maximal, it feels like looking at a collection of precious stones. Myriads of differently coloured and textured surfaces carefully placed together, each finding their own space to beckon the ear. It's a blend of chaos and beauty in equal measure and a testament to the exploratory spirit at work, which ensures that as always, there's something new to the ears here.

    Dead Can Dance

The uncompromising eponymous debut, Dead Can Dance (1984), harnessed a bewitching barrage of sounds (including the distinct sound of the yangqin) with the then five-piece interchanging instruments to leave the vocals of Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry as the only constant. The album's cover was important as an introduction too, a Papua New Guinean mask that some believe when worn, a life force can be put into the inanimate wood - the dead can dance.

    Diary: Remastered

Originally formed in Seattle in 1992, Sunny Day Real Estate featured Nate Mendel (bass), William Goldsmith (drums), Dan Hoerner (guitar, vocals) and Jeremy Enigk (vocals, guitar). Following the completion of a U.S. Tour to support Diary, the band's debut album, the group headed back into the studio with Wood to record the follow-up. But during the recording sessions, internal tensions splintered Sunny Day Real Estate, resulting in a sudden break-up and the finished album being turned in to Sub Pop without a title or artwork. LP2 was released in November of 1995, by which time both Goldsmith and Mendel had joined Foo Fighters and Enigk had begun a solo career.

Sub Pop Records will re-issue both Diary and the band's second full-length album, commonly known as LP2 (or The Pink Album for its entirely pink cover). Both re-mastered albums will include rare bonus tracks as well as newly written liner notes.

Following a more than 10 year hiatus, all four original members of pioneering Seattle rock band Sunny Day Real Estate will regroup for a 20-date US tour starting September, 2009.

    Predatory Headlights

Predatory Headlights was completed over the course of three years with the assistance of engineer and co-producer, Justin Perkins. Pitsch has often cited Perkins' involvement in early 2000's groups Yesterday's Kids and The Obsoletes as a heavy influence. Perkins also worked with Tenement on their 2011 offering, Napalm Dream, as well as acclaimed records by the likes of The Goodnight Loving, The Sugar Stems, and The Mystery Girls. The bulk of Predatory Headlights was written and recorded at BFG in Appleton, Wisconsin - Tenement's home and personal studio. The house was symbolically demolished within days of finishing the record, and in a fitting display of finality, three years of sweat and nightmares and beauty and dissonance returned to the soil and found its way back into the water and woods with only this document to prove it ever even existed at all. Thanks to Don Giovanni Records, you hold the very document in your hands - Tenement's newest window into the nature of the human being and the complexity of life: Predatory Headlights.

    Glider

Beautiful post-folk ballads a thing of tremendous sonic depth one of the year's best debuts BOOMKAT

A bold and beautiful album CYCLYC DEFROST

    haunting and atmospheric. THE 405

...compelling...it never dissolves after the first listen instead it only acquires new layers, new musical textures. THE GUARDIAN

It's a ravishing, terrific, gorgeous album-the rare kind that throws its listeners into reverie. PORTLAND MERCURY

Heather Woods Broderick excels at distilling her experiences into a soulful melancholy
that's enduring both for it's intimate relatable moments and its persistent
sense of mystery. Her uncanny ear for evocative production and gorgeous vocal
harmonies serves her well on her new album Glider. Throughout the album, the rich
dreamlike atmospheres she creates hint at a darkness looming on the horizon, while
the singularity of her ethereal voice always seems to linger long after the music has
    stopped.

As a talented multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, Heather has had the opportunity to
record and tour with plenty of incredible artists including Horse Feathers, Efterklang,
and Sharon Van Etten, which has kept her moving house and traveling around
the world for much of the past decade. She's currently living in Portland, Oregon,
but it's easy to imagine how her peripatetic lifestyle might diminish her sense of a
place to call home, while also strengthening her resilience, and her connection to
the reassuring constants in her life. As she explains Living in so many different
places has made me able to feel pretty comfortable everywhere. Her uncommon
sense of ease and grace, despite her hectic life, stems in part from her deeply
rooted and intertwined musical and familial background.

Music took root in Heather's life before she was even born, when her parents, both
musicians, met for the first time at one of her mom's gigs, which her dad was
attending. The two married and moved to Maine where Heather, second of three
children, was born at home. When she was 8-years-old the family moved across the
country to Oregon, and soon after moving, she asked if she could take piano
lessons, a practice she would continue through high school and into college. In
elementary school band she learned flute, and later picked up cello and guitar.

Though the songs on Glider aren't explicitly about touring, her life on the road
provides the backdrop and context for her songs that are often about relationships
that naturally fade as two people grow apart. I've realized that I really used the
songs on Glider and the time I put into writing them as a way to pay some attention
to things I'd been putting off, and to find some clarity around certain events, says
Heather. Building on what she learned from her first solo effort From the Ground
(2009), the dynamic structures and emotional complexity of her new songs are
evidence of how much she's grown as a person and as a songwriter. More confident
and self-assured than ever, songs like Fall Hard evolve from vulnerable bare piano
and vocals to hypnotizing swells of vocals reminiscent of Grouper or Cocteau Twins'
Elizabeth Fraser. Her voice soars in stride with a wall of guitars on Wyoming,
while Mama Shelter introduces a gentle groove as Heather conjures the sensuality
of Stevie Nicks. The album closes with the heartbreaking All for a Love, ending
with the refrain I can see our love is dragging you down. As dark as the sentiment
can be, Heather always seems to be leaning into the light.

    Little Hours

In Richmond, VA, there's a small yellow cottage and an austere replica of a mid-19th Century white Federal period house. The members of Spokane built the structure while recording Little Hours, their first new album in four years. The record is both a document of and an aural parallel to that difficult, meticulous process. It's the patient sheen of stillness after a short, violent burst of intention. The lingering, resonant decay of a nail being hammered into wood. A piano laden marriage of small hopes and quiet violence. Packaged in a vinyl sleeve with both record and CD inside, 50 of which are handmade and numbered. It features the core ensemble of 2003's Measurement along with contributions from members of Brooklyn's orchestral, minimalist band Gregor Samsa.

The DBS battery packs will last for years. A test button and LED allow for the occasional battery check.

DOUBLE COUNTER-SPIRAL GEOMETRY: Redwood and the other AQ "Tree Feature" cables have an inner circular array of positive conductors spiraling in one direction. Around this inner group are the negative conductors, spiraling in the opposite direction.

The different SST-determined conductor sizes used in Redwood allow an exceptionally clear, clean and dynamic sound.

    Millport

This album represents three distinct historical trends that came together in the span of only 10 days during recording at Studios 606 and Big Bad Sound in April of 2016. The most obvious one is the musicians themselves. The rhythm section is composed of players from Social Distortion. 36 years ago, Bad Religion and Social Distortion shared a stage in Santa Ana, California. Well, it wasn't really a stage, it was an abandoned warehouse made into a punk concert/party place. That was my first concert, as the singer/songwriter in Bad Religion. Our styles over the years diverged, but one consistent element remained - our love of American Folk Rock and Old-Time music continued to grow.

The second root apparent on this album is that of the sound and musicianship itself. No mere hacks, these musicians are masters. Vintage wood, having been crafted into musical instruments, produces the sound of history when played by virtuosos such as those collected here. An old guitar, a vintage fiddle, drums and bass, clawhammer banjo, and a combo of electric guitar and tubed amplifier, create a sound that can only be described as classic. When you add the beautiful harmonies of these most excellent background singers, there is no doubt that this music comes from a deep-rooted expression of American experience.

The final historical root is a personal one. The people who introduced me to Old-Time music are now old-timers themselves. My family roots go back to Indiana and Wisconsin. The Indiana folks sang a-Capella in the old country chapel at my Grandma's funeral. Her children taught me to sing and the songs they chose came from the 30s, 40s, 50s, and of course the folk revival tunes of the 1960s. This was the sound I brought forth to my own band starting in the 1980s. It's the only kind of lyrical style I know. And hopefully, this album will add another strong branch to my music. Thank you all for continuing to water the tree.

    For Emma, Forever Ago

Pronounced "bohn eevair; French for "good winter" and spelled wrong deliberately. This debut is centered around a particular aesthetic; Justin Vernon, the primary force behind Bon Iver, moved to a remote cabin in the woods of Northwestern Wisconsin at the onset of winter, alone for three months. This solitary time fed a bold, uninhibited new musical focus. All his personal trouble, lack of perspective, heartache, longing, love, loss, and guilt that had been stockpiled over the past six years was suddenly purged into song. The NY Times called this record "irresistible", and it was given a "Recommeded" rating by Pitchfork. RIYL: Iron & Wine, M. Ward, and Elliott Smith.

    White Lighter

White Lighter is the follow up to the bands acclaimed EP A New Kind Of House that caught the attention of countless music critics and listeners for what NPR's Bob Boilen calls "absolutely stunning" and "so beautiful, it make's me want to follow every single thing Typhoon does."

Recorded at Pendarvis Farm in Happy Valley, Oregon, Typhoon isolated themselves from outside distractions to arrange and record this collection of songs with an impressive emphasis on storytelling and melody. "On the farm, we were living inside the record" says songwriter Morton. "I had one place in the woods where I would write and rewrite one song, and a different place for working another. The whole thing was laid out spatially over so many acres. I built a small fort in the wood barn where I kept my books and guitar. Slept a couple feet away from the recording desk. When it was cold, we built wood fires, when it was warm we went swimming down the road. Friends came and went, sometimes recording with us."

Produced by the band along with their in-house engineer Paul Laxer, Typhoon created a dynamic recording - full of horns, strings and group vocal crescendos - that will establish the band as an immensely creative force.

An inspiring hybrid of literate lyrics and wide ranging pop music - new songs such as first single "Young Fathers," "Possible Deaths," "Prosthetic Love" and "Hunger And Thirst" - take listeners on a journey through the experience of having it all, fighting to keep the dream and accepting your fate.
"There are several layers to this new record" says Morton. "It's definitely the most autobiographical record I've ever done. I'm also trying to reconstitute disparate experiences into something like a meaningful sequence in the pale light of truth."

Along with Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, NPR, Alternative Press and more, Paste Magazine raves "Music critics throw around adjectives like 'orchestral' and 'expansive' all the time these days. But here's a band that actually deserves such labels. Portland's Typhoon is an indie rock geek's dream: a dynamic 12-piece with a seemingly unending reservoir of energy, emotive vocals, arpeggiated guitars, horns, multiple drum kits and strings Ladies and gentlemen, meet your new critical darlings."

    Paperback Ghosts

COMET GAIN return with their seventh album, following 2011's critically acclaimed "Howl of The Lonely Crowd". Recorded at Soup Studios with producer Simon Trought at the helm, and inspired by the psycho-geography of walks in North London woods and in the forgotten grey hinterland of the city's back streets, "Paperback Ghosts" comes soaked in autumn melancholy. Blending psychedelia, folk-rock, garage muscle and 4am sadness, the songs draw on the esoteric that lies behind the ordinary. Comet Gain are David Charlie Feck (vocals, guitar), Ben Phillipson (guitar), Rachel Evans (vocals), ex-Morrissey/The Meteors drummer Woodie Taylor (percussion), Anne Laure Guillain (keyboards) and new recruit, Clientele bassist James Hornsey - a motley group of like-minded romantics, taking pride in an abject failure to care about the normal band model.. On each album they record, Comet Gain bring together their myriad of influences, creating a cohesive aesthetic between sound, artwork, liner notes and ideas. Paperback Ghosts is no different, offering us a glimpse into a haunted half-world with its strings, yearning harmonies, 12-string acoustic guitars and half-focused vision of pianos in reverb, while remaining at heart a pop record, a richly textured affirmation of Comet Gain's twenty-year anti-career.

    Trinity Lane

This record was written mostly in the summer of 2016 in my apartment off of Trinity Lane. A few tunes came out on the road as well. After moving out of an ex's house, I settled into a new neighborhood down the road. Shortly after, I picked up a tour with my good friend John Moreland where we went to the West Coast and back. I was trailing them in my little 2002 Honda Accord that has literally been all over the country with me. A woman in my early 30s, I found myself sick of my same old shit. I was inspired by the landscape of the west. My faith was tested on the curves of the Highway 101 through the Red Woods. I got terrifyingly stoned on weed gummy bears in Denver. I saw real cowboys in Wyoming and drove through a flood in Arkansas. I felt displaced, but connected.

Upon returning to the south, my home of Tennessee, I slunk back into my nook off of Trinity. I went over all the things I'd seen. There had been a freedom in being so far away - a lack of responsibility, a distance from some of the issues, if you will, though I'd carried them right with me, back to my birthplace of Los Angeles, peering over the ocean, wondering how you can come so far yet end up in the same place. I contemplated fleeing and just staying in California, but the south is my home and I had to deal with what needed to be dealt with. I started to write. And go to the park. And listen to records. And play my guitar every night. Every time I wanted a man, I picked up my guitar. Every time I wanted a drink, I picked up my guitar.

Love will take you to the darkest places but also to the most honest places if you let it. Learning how to love myself is something I've always been lousy with, and I spent some time on that. I thought about my sobriety, what that means to me, the struggles I'd had throughout the years, since I was a 27-year-old and hung up my toxic drinking habit. I thought about my mother, who took her own life when I was a baby, not far from my age at 30 years old, and I related to her more than ever. As you can see, there was plenty of time spent on my own. I didn't talk to that many folks, albeit a few close friends, and leaned into my family. I stayed away from men, and danced alone in the evenings, looking out my window observing my humble and lively neighborhood. I found power in being by myself. I found peace in the people I was surrounded with - we didn't really know one another, but we smiled when passed on the street. One time I almost rear-ended an older woman in her car backing out of my driveway and I said, Oh man, I'm just not used to any cars coming around this bend. She replied, This is our little hideout, baby. And it really was. The woods were behind me, Dickerson Pike was in the front.

So after a while, I had all these songs to play, and wanted to share them. I wanted to get out of town to get some distance from everything, so after an ongoing conversation with Michael Trent, I took my band to Johns Island, SC and we holed up for a few weeks. I poured my heart out, and trusted them with it, and these guys gave it right back. I think we all understood what it's like to question home, intention, demons, love....I think most people understand that. I hope you love this record, I made it for you.

    Gold and Stone

The Roanoke, Virginia based noise pop, power rock trio, Eternal Summers will release their fourth full-length album "Gold and Stone." Having formed in 2009, Eternal Summers has now been operating as the trio of Nicole Yun, Daniel Cundiff and Jonathan Woods longer then they did as a duo without Jonathan. Gone are the days of the Roanoke based collective known as the Magic Twig Community that saw the handful of like-minded indie artists working together; but what has grown in its place is a band that stands firmly on its own. In the words of All Music, "The kind that other bands will look to for inspiration 20 years later."

With several previous releases, there has already been a lot said about Eternal Summers music. From the crafty minimalism on their debut Silver, to the dream punk sheen on 2012's breakout Correct Behavior, to the guitar driven power on The Drop Beneath, the evolution of Eternal Summers marks a band that embraces both anthemic rock and bittersweet ballads- a band that is grounded in jangle pop but with an added depth that rewards on repeated listens.

For Gold and Stone, Eternal Summers returned to the site of last year's well-received The Drop Beneath, Resonate Studio in Austin, TX and back into the very adept hands of engineer and mixer Louie Lino to create an album that ventures beyond the pop immediacy of their previous albums. Nicole says, "On this self-produced album, we wanted to target more lush and radiant textures, some classic rock riffs, some jazzier elements and some full-on punk snarl.

    Calling Out

It wouldn't be entirely accurate to say that EZTV met while trying out for J. Spaceman's
latest US touring line-up of Spiritualized, but it's not far from the truth.
Songwriter and audio engineer Ezra Tenenbaum had been casually working
on solo home recordings on his Tascam 8-Track in the vein of Shoes, Emitt
Rhodes and Cleaners For Venus, and, in a desire to round out the songs, he
enlisted bassist Shane O'Connell and drummer Michael Stasiak (formerly of
Widowspeak). As it happened, the trio's first chance to play together was an
audition for the American touring version of Spiritualized (they didn't get the job).
But, the trio kept meeting and working, turning Ezra recording as a solo artist
into Ezra, Shane and Michael playing as a band; thus, EZTV was formed.

With a pool of over 30 demos to work with and Jarvis Taveniere of Woods
onboard to produce, the band headed to Thump Studios in Greenpoint,
Brooklyn, to record their debut LP for Captured Tracks. The result is Calling
Out, a cohesive 12-song statement in the long tradition of fully realized debuts,
stripped of artifice, but full of hooks and songwriting chops. Tracks like
first single "The Light," premiering today via The FADER, exhibit what you would
call the EZTV mantra: presenting songs with only the required embellishments.
They've got one foot firmly planted in classic American power-pop and college
rock while the other utilizes more left-of-the-dial sonic experimentation.
The result is a sound that's both familiar and new, but always about the songs.

In an era of independent music with a lot more emphasis placed on "story" and
meaningless twitter feuds, EZTV present a record that speaks for itself. It's an
LP made for an audience that doesn't want or need any kind of angle or controversy,
but desires songs that resonate and have a lasting appeal, something
    available here in spades.

    Are We There

For all the attention that was paid to her 2012 break-through Tramp, Sharon Van Etten is an
artist with a hunger to turn another corner and to delve deeper, writing from a place of honesty
and vulnerability to create a bond with the listener that few contemporary musicians can match.
Compelled by a restless spirit, Van Etten is continuously challenging herself. Now, the result is
Are We There, a self-produced album of exceptional intimacy, sublime generosity, and immense
    breadth.

Most musicians are quite happy to leave the production end of things to someone else. It's
enough to live your music without taking on the role of producer as well. Yet Van Etten knew it
was time to make a record entirely on her terms. The saying goes "fortune favors the bold" and
yet this boldness had to be tempered. For this,Van Etten found a kindred spirit in veteran music
producer Stewart Lerman. Originally working together on Boardwalk Empire, they gently moved
into new roles, rallying around the idea of making a record together in Lerman's studio in New
Jersey. Lerman's studio expertise gave Van Etten the freedom to make Are We There the way she
imagined.Van Etten also enlisted the individual talents of her band, consisting of Heather Woods
Broderick, Doug Keith and Zeke Hutchins, and brought in friends Dave Hartley and Adam
Granduciel from The War on Drugs, Jonathan Meiberg (Shearwater),Jana Hunter(Lower Dens),
Peter Broderick, Mackenzie Scott(Torres), Stuart Bogie, Jacob C. Morris and Mickey Freeze.

It is clear from the opening chords in the first song, Afraid of Nothing, that we are witnessing a
new awareness, a sign of Van Etten in full stride, writing, producing and performing from a place
that seems almost mythical, were it not so touchable and real. Always direct, and never shying
away even from the most personally painful narratives, Van Etten's songwriting continues to
evolve. Many of the songs deal with seemingly impossible decisions, anticipation, and then
resolution. She sings of the nature of desire, memory, of being lost, emptiness, of promises and
loyalty, fear and change, of healing and the true self, violence and sanctuary, waiting, of silence.
The artist who speaks in such a voice is urging us to do something,to take hold and to go deeper.
Living in this way,the questions of life remain alive, as close and steady as breathing. Many of the
ballads of old are as dark as pitch, and people for whom the issues of life and death were as vivid
as flame wrote them. You could turn off the electricity, remove all the instruments and Sharon's
voice and words would remain. They connect her to the mystic stratum which flows just beneath
the everyday, which is rarely acknowledged as the forces of distraction sweep our attention away.
