    Elvis At Stax

1973 was a crucial year in the career of Elvis Presley. Riding high on the success of Elvis: Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite, which was seen by over 1 BILLION people, Elvis did something remarkable. He chose to take control of his own business. He sold his future royalties to RCA and he started a new publishing company. No one would tell him what to do ever again.

Elvis decided that his next recording project would be on his home turf - at the red-hot STAX, the launching pad of such greats as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave and Isaac Hayes. He assembled the very best musicians in town - members of The
MGs, The Memphis Boys and his own TCB band to create the ultimate band and he searched for fresh new material that would reect his new path. Such
songs as "I Got A Feelin' In My Body" and "Loving Arms" demonstrate an artist looking to broaden his palette and his reach.

The STAX material, an amazing chapter of Elvis' career, has never been positioned as a whole
    body of work. Until now.

    The W

    Import

Numbered, Limited Edition On Crystal Clear Vinyl

The W is the third studio album by the world's baddest Hip Hop group Wu-Tang Clan. Released in 2000, the album debuted at number 5 on the Billboard 200, and instantly topped the R&B/Hip Hop Albums Chart after release. Containing the hit Gravel Pit, the album was certified Platinum a few months later.

After their 1997 album WU-TANG FOREVER and several solo projects, The W has a more rugged, less polished sound than most Wu-Tang related albums from that era. Group mastermind RZA produced The W with roughed up Soul samples and tight, tough beats. Paranoid kung fu samples and bizarre sounds drive the fantastic nightmare. The back-to-basics approach (the group's massive debut ENTER THE WU-TANG comes to mind) works so well because it puts the focus back on some of the best rappers in the game.

The album also features guest appearances from Isaac Hayes, Redman, Nas, Busta Rhymes and Snoop Dogg.

watershed album for the multi-instrumental singer/songwriter and producer, it only served to further cement his reputation as a progressive soul artist
capable of unmistakably original arrangements and genre-defining R&B mastery. This new vinyl reissue is a must-have for all serious soul and R&B fans.

Bill Withers Bill Withers' Greatest Hits on Numbered Limited Edition 180g LP from Mobile Fidelity

Bill Withers' Smooth Soul Voice, Mellow Grooves, and Gospel Accents Inform Beloved Work: Booker T. Jones, Al Jackson, and Stephen Stills Among Guest Instrumentalists on Greatest Hits

Essential Bill Withers' Greatest Hits Compilation Includes Ubiquitous Classics Such as Ain't No Sunshine, Lean on Me, Lovely Day, Use Me, and Grandma's Hands

Mobile Fidelity 180g LP Pressed at RTI: Roots R&B Has Never Sounded Better on Any Format

Bill Withers created mellow, downhome-style soul for barely more than a decade before retreating from the industry to pursue craftsman interests. Yet over the course of the handful of albums he made for Sussex and CBS, the Appalachian native struck lasting emotional chords in legends ranging from Booker T. Jones to Stephen Stills - not to mention the millions of listeners that fell under the spell of now-standard tracks such as Lean on Me, Use Me, and Ain't No Sunshine. The antithesis of the sweaty R&B shouter that prowled the edge of stages, Withers dealt in calm and vulnerability, qualities that come to fore on the seminal Bill Withers' Greatest Hits.

Pressed on 180g LP at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's vinyl reissue of the 1981 compilation provides a transparent view of Withers' relaxing timbre and the subtle grooves underlining his arrangements. Characteristics ranging from the tension of the guitars, funky bends of the bass, whisper-soft coo of the formal strings, airiness of the backing harmonies, and sharpness of the snare drum emerge with utmost clarity and lifelike presence. Always prized for its naked honesty and pure conviction, Withers' music positively caresses the senses on this LP, the unadulterated production and beautiful soundscapes revealed anew with each listen.

Incredibly, Withers almost never got a shot at recording. After receiving a deal from Sussex while laboring as a toilet-seat manufacturer, he landed in the care of Stax bandleader Booker T. Jones, who gathered most of his fellow MG members - along with Stills and Jim Keltner - to assist in Withers' debut. Two takes from those sessions, the Grammy-winning Ain't No Sunshine and devotional Grandma's Hands, are included here, and showcase the vocalist's incredible breath control, folksy drawl, and restrained phrasing. They also indicate his penchant for converting biographical experience into eminently catchy combinations of pop, gospel, blues, and soul.

Evidence of Withers' crossover appeal is found not only via his chart successes on both the pop and R&B charts, but in the DNA of his best work. There's not one forgettable moment on Greatest Hits. Covered by the likes of Fiona Apple, Mick Jagger, Isaac Hayes, Alicia Keys, and dozens more, Use Me rides a riveting clarinet riff and urban tempo to express the double-edged feelings associated with an edgy relationship. On the loping Who Is He (And What Is He to You?), Withers again splits the bitter and sweet. For the Latin-tinged Lovely Day, Withers holds a single note for 18 seconds and composed a song that's been sampled and rerecorded countless times by artists spanning Diana Ross to R. Kelly. And with Lean on Me, the West Virginian devised a masterpiece that's been for more than four decades part of the classic American songbook, an updated hymn carried to immortality by members of the Charles Wright & 103rd Street Rhythm Band.

A veritable template for British soul contemporaries like Sam Smith and an extension of the timeless fare explored by Van Morrison, Curtis Mayfield, and Al Green, Bill Withers' Greatest Hits belongs in every music lover's library.

    Greatest Hit Singles

Best known for his classic Shaft soundtrack and role on South Park, Isaac Hayes has one of the deepest and impressive discographies in modern music. This singles collection focuses on his heyday, kicking off with Hot Buttered Soul-era tracks such as Walk On By and By The Time I Get To Phoenix.

One of the best-available Isaac Hayes compilation, Greatest Hit Singles bypasses a couple of his later disco hits, but the result is a more unified sound that helps illustrate why Hayes was so important to the development of '70s soul...for a more concentrated dose of Hayes at his best, Greatest Hit Singles is hard to beat. - Steve Huey, allmusic.com

    Shaft

Of the many wonderful blaxpoitation soundtracks to emerge during the early '70s, Shaft certainly deserves mention as not only one of the most lasting but
also one of the most successful. Isaac Hayes was undoubtedly one of the era's most accomplished soul artists, and with Theme from Shaft, he delivered
an anthem just as ambitious and revered as the film itself, a song that has only grown more treasured over the years, after having been an enormously
popular hit at the time of its release. Shaft still remains a powerful record; one of Hayes' pinnacle moments for sure.

    Double Dynamite

This was the second Sam & Dave album to enjoy significant crossover appeal. The 1967 record included such hits as Said I Wasn't Gonna Tell Nobody, Soothe Me, and When Something Is Wrong with My Baby. Isaac Hayes and David Porter were now rolling as songwriters, and even though the record didn't attain big pop numbers, the singles clicked with both soul and pop audiences. More importantly, Sam & Dave's teamwork and vocal interaction were establishing them as major stars.

Terry Manning is best known as an engineer and producer who spent the '60s and '70s in Memphis working for Ardent and Stax Studios on some of that city's most important records, from Isaac Hayes to Big Star. In 1970 he cut the album Home Sweet Home and it was released on the Stax subsidiary, Enterprise. Originally intended as just a vanity project, Home Sweet Home is now a highly regarded and collectible LP, praised for its innovative studio trickery and Manning's offbeat arrangements, especially on the epic opening 10-minute version of George Harrison's "Savoy Truffle." StereoType A

It wasn't so long ago that New York-based Japanese duo Cibo Matto (Miho Hatori and Yuka Honda) were simply a fun, gimmicky East Village outfit who performed on Casio keyboards and sang almost exclusively about their favorite foods. As such, the band's major-label debut album Viva! La Woman was sugary, but not really substantive--a clear-cut example of Eastern culture endearingly misinterpreting Western music.

But Cibo Matto has come a long way since penning songs like Know Your Chicken, Beef Jerky, and Birthday Cake. Stereotype A is a mature, instrumentally rich album that sees the group break the novelty mold and achieve recognition for compelling songwriting and interesting arrangements. On Stereotype Cibo Matto incorporates such styles as electropop, bossa nova, soul, hip-hop, and butt-waggling funk, expressing a dizzying range of influences that include TLC, Ice Cube, Luscious Jackson, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Isaac Hayes. --Jon Wiederhorn

    Tranquilizers

Includes 8 page booklet Of Original Dog Bite Art

In a release inspired by the smooth rhythms of the region's
past, Atlanta-based Dog Bite offers more music medicine
in the form of Tranquilizers. The sophomore release
transcends the reverie state of Velvet Changes in pursuit
of a darker, more full-bodied experience. Tranquilizers
migrates into a dreamy sonic realm enveloped in its own
    soulful inuence.

Frontman Phil Jones found his extensive listening to iconic
R&B musicians such as Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes to
be the original muse for the album. In its formation it
began as a soul record; however, at its core the release
remains grounded in Dog Bite's beloved shoegaze
    landscapes.

With the support of Woody Shortridge on bass and Tak
Takemura on drums, Dog Bite purposefully evades
sedation through its blend of smoky textures across
divergent genres. Being an album submerged between
the differences of classic funk and rock music, it is Jones'
customary croon that weaves a common mesh in the
    record's diverse artistry

    Kill Bill Vol. 1 Soundtrack

Fashion be damned: Pop culture is just one big Hometown Buffet for writer-director Quentin Tarantino. Nowhere has that sensibility been more apparent than on his hand-picked soundtrack choices, and this oft tongue-in-cheek tale of a female assassin's revenge (his first film in six years) is no exception. With dizzy, almost palpable glee, Tarantino evokes the international hall-of-mirrors influences that energize martial arts films and much of Asian pop culture in general. Thus the hip-hop of Wu Tang's RZA (who, along with composer Charles Bernstein, concocts what passes for the score's traditional cues) somehow finds itself but one ingredient in a heady souffle that includes vintage TV and film cue rarities (Al Hirt's main title from The Green Hornet, Bernard Herrmann's haunting theme from Twisted Nerve, the spaghetti western melodrama of Luis Bacalov's The Grand Duel, Isaac Hayes in full blaxploitation mode on Run Fay Run), Charlie Feathers' vintage rockabilly and a pan-kitsch sensibility that encompasses Zamfir, Nancy Sinatra's angst-in-the-pants take Bang, Bang and Santa Esmeralda's disco-era workout of Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood. Tarantino's contemporary Japan-Pop selections are no less giddy, ranging from Meiko Kaji's sultry Flower of Carnage to The 5.6.7.8's loopy Woo Hoo. It's everything we've come to expect from a Tarantino score (including dialog excerpts and a few sound fx stingers), with a madcap trip around the pop music world thrown in for good measure. -- Jerry McCulley

Complete & Unbelievable...The Otis Redding Dictionary Of Soul

Ranked 254/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time

50th Anniversary Double LP Package Includes Both Mono & Stereo Versions + Bonus 7-Inch Single

Otis Redding helped define soul music in 1966 with Complete And Unbelievable... The Otis Redding Dictionary Of Soul. The album, which peaked at #5 on the U.S. R&B charts, was once praised by critic Jon Landau as: The finest record ever to come out of Memphis and certainly the best example of modern soul ever recorded.

Redding recorded his fifth studio album, THE OTIS REDDING DICTIONARY OF SOUL, in the summer of 1966 at Stax Studios in Memphis. Together with Booker T. & the M.G.'s, pianist Isaac Hayes and the Memphis Horns, Redding recorded 12 songs for the album, including the all-time classics, Try A Little Tenderness and Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song).

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of this landmark recording, Rhino will release THE OTIS REDDING DICTIONARY OF SOUL as a double-LP set featuring both mono and stereo versions of the album, the latter of which has been out-of-print for decades. Both LPs will be pressed on 180-gram vinyl for superior audio quality. The set comes with a bonus 7 reissue of the single: Try A Little Tenderness b/w I'm Sick Y'all.

    Elvis At Stax

    Import

Riding high on the success of Aloha From Hawaii, Elvis did something remarkable. He decided that his next recording project would be on his home turf - Memphis, TN. The most desirable studio in town was the red-hot STAX - the launching pad of such greats as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave and Isaac Hayes. Elvis assembled the very best musicians in town - members of Booker T. and The MGs, The Memphis Boys and his own TCB band to create the ultimate band and he searched for fresh new material that would reect his new path. Such songs as "I Got A Feelin' In My Body" and "Loving Arms" demonstrate an artist looking to broaden his palette and his reach.

The Stax material has never been positioned as a whole body of work - but is an amazing chapter of Elvis' career. With the Elvis At Stax release, all of this material is collected for the rst time. Along with some of the funky outtakes, it creates a fresh new package that, while it doesn't have the known hits, tells a great story.

    Sunken Condos (Out Of Stock)

    Clear Vinyl!

Donald Fagen's (one half of Steely Dan),  fourth solo album for Warner Reprise, Sunken Condos, will be released on October 16. His first three solo albums, The Nightfly, Kamakiriad and Morph the Cat comprised the project known as the Nightfly Trilogy. Sunken Condos begins a new chapter in in the creative evolution of this innovative artist, whose career is still going strong after forty years.

The nine tracks on Sunken Condos were co-produced by Michael Leonhart and Donald. All but one track, an Ashkenazi recasting of Isaac Hayes' Out of the Ghetto, are new Fagen originals. Some familiar names from the Steely Dan family of players are on hand (Jon Herington, the Steely Dan horns, Freddie Washington) plus some new faces. The word is that, from now on, everything Donald does has got to be funky.
