    Italian Movie Soundtracks

Chet Baker had a long and complicated relationship with Italy. It was a country where he was both imprisoned and adored. His first visit there took place in 1955, during his first successful European tour. It was during this tour that the quartet's pianist, the talented Dick Twardzik, tragically died in Paris from a heroin overdose. Baker was devastated, and following Twardzik's death - for which he felt some level of responsibility - the trumpeter submerged himself in the drug world and in a self-destructive spiral which would last for the rest of his life. Baker would stay in Europe for a number of months after Twardzik's death, playing with different local musicians.

Baker made his way back to New York in mid-1956 and wouldn't return to Italy until the 1959 trip that yielded the recordings included here. In fact, as Ezio Leoni (the musician in charge of the sessions) explained that Chet's trip to Milan took place in order to make two albums (one with strings and orchestra, the other with a small combo of Italian players). Baker was already an addict when the contract was signed, and before he could travel he was imprisoned in the States. Therefore, the sessions had to be postponed and shortly after this music was recorded Baker would be imprisoned again, this time in Italy. Prior to his Italian imprisonment he made the two albums expected of him and recorded some interesting tracks for movie soundtracks with different bands conducted by Piero Umiliani, which are presented on this LP. All of that music is also contained here, including a vocal version of "Arrivederci" which has been taken from the original movie itself and, for that reason, has some odd overdubbed dialogues in Italian.

The third album by this combo from Bologna is the apotheosis of their histrionic verve. Directed in studio by Italian progressive rock luminary, Paolo Tofani, Kinotto was released in 1979, and as Freak Antoni himself declared, the album was closer to new wave than previous efforts and its best-known track, Mi piaccion le sbarbine. was soon on heavy rotation.

With Kinotto, also came the artistic consecration of the Skiantos, who went from being a cult band to one of the most energetic and histrionic in Italian rock. Invited to replace Italian rock superstar Vasco Rossi's back-up band in 1990, and undoubtedly a source of inspiration for the evil doings of Italian mock rock band Elio e Le Storie Tese, with Kinotto the Skiantos wrote one of the most thrilling pages in Italian music.

Escape Velocity sees Zombi return to their roots, using synth and drums to create stirring melodies and moving cadences. Whereas earlier efforts found the band entrenched in Italian horror scores, Escape Velocity finds Zombi continuing their exploration of famed Italian record producer Giorgio Moroder and legendary kraut rock icons Neu and Harmonia. The sweeping synth sequences and pulsing rhythms are sometimes dancey, sometimes reflective, but always hypnotic under the watchful eye of this distinguished duo. Escape Velocity's five ethereal tracks are simply put, celestial music for other worlds.

Neon are still one of the most influential and multi-faceted bands on the entire Italian new wave scene, able to flirt simultaneously with both electronica and industrial culture. Rituals, their first album, originally released on KinderGarten and distributed by Polygram in 1985, represented a crucial turning point in their career, and in some respects, their creative peak.

This vinyl reissue on Spittle arrives, therefore, in celebration of their return to the scene with numerous live performances, and with the hope of renewing interest in one of the most exciting seasons of the Italian underground. Rituals was a seminal album precisely for its ability to bring together the more martial rhythms of dance with the guitar-heavy sound of post-punk, a practice that soon would be legitimated by other bands on the scene like Chicago's Wax Trax, and the side projects of Ministry. Their reinterpretation of Jimi Hendrix's Burning of the Midnight Lamp still sounds like a lethal experiment.

The godfather of improvisational guitar, Derek Bailey's praises have been sung far and wide by everyone from Pat Metheny to Karlheinz Stockhausen for having revolutionized the way the instrument was played over the last half of the twentieth century. Although fans are often frustrated by the low-fidelity of his earlier recordings, this 1975 LP (originally released on the Italian avant-garde label, Cramps), stands out in that regard. Recorded in an actual studio (unlike most of his early work) in Milan, for this session Bailey was apparently asked by his Italian hosts to define "improvisation". He then proceeded to give his answer in the form of these fourteen tracks (eight performed with electric guitar, five with six-string acoustic guitar, and one with a 19-string acoustic guitar).

Nova Musicha No 6: Four Principles On Ireland And Other Pieces

Having worked closely with Karlheinz Stockhausen during the late 1950s, the Irish-born Cornelius Cardew became a major figure on the European avant-garde music scene over the following decade. However, by the early 1970s Cardew had become deeply involved in the international communist movement which created a growing rift between himself and his colleagues (particularly after his book Stockhausen Serves Imperialism was published in 1974). As Cardew's politics changed, so did his music, which began drawing more and more from the populist roots of folk music. On this LP Cardew proposes a series of compositions based on the revolutionary songs of different countries (i.e. the Irish Rebellion of 1798, the Islamic Rebellion of 1937, the uprisings in West Berlin in the early seventies). It is perhaps not surprising that Cardew's new music found a home in Italy of the 1970s (this LP was originally released on the Italian Cramps label), as the Italian Communist Party was extremely strong during this era.

    Dolce Vita

Jonas Kaufmann is the undisputed tenor king of the world and has proven beyond doubt that he is today's finest interpreter of Italian operatic repertoire. On his new album, Dolce Vita, Kaufmann pays tribute to the land and culture that nurtured his love of music and has produced winning melodies for the tenor voice like no other. Kaufmann may not have been born in Italy, but he is an "adopted son" and brings an authentic Italian spirit and understanding to the music - with his own inimitable flair. Since his many childhood holidays in Italy, immersed in its history and southern temperament, Kaufmann feels very much at home in his adopted culture - almost everything he brings to the opera stage stems from his passion and understanding of this Mediterranean land and its music. Dolce Vita is much broader than a Neapolitan album featuring a selection of songs drawn from Italian, Neapolitan and pop songs. The album includes the well-known classics "Torna a Surriento," "Volare," "Core 'ngrato," "Non ti scordar de me," "Caruso" and many more.

    Eternamente (Verismo Arias)

For Eternamente, her first studio recording in six years, soprano Angela Gheorghiu focuses on Italian composers of the generation that followed Verdi and predominantly on repertoire she has not sung before - including some fascinating rarities. Joining her for duets from Mascagni Cavalleria Rusticana and Giordano's Andrea ChÉnieris another star of today's opera stage, tenor Joseph Calleja. Eternamente is described as a collection of verismo - the term used generically for Italian opera of the immediate post-Verdi era. No matter when they were composed, and no matter what their subject matter, all these operas demand great passion and commitment from their performers - and they get it from Angela Gheorghiu. "It is like my soul, it is something different, it is not the voice," she explained in an interview with Opera magazine. "The voice is also there, it has to be there, and it has had to be prepared - but at that moment of the performance, there is more. The response is never a conscious exaggeration - it is a natural expression. I am never pretending. It is just how I am at that moment." The character and impact of her voice were summarized thus in Gramophone: "With her smooth and dark-toned soprano, a voice at once powerfully firm and vulnerable, Gheorghiu stands out from an entire generation of talented singers. Her sound is convincingly Italianate in the great tradition; her voice, once heard, is never forgotten."

Premiata Forneria Marconi, better known in English speaking countries as P.F.M., were arguably the finest Italian Progressive rock band of the 1970s and certainly one of the most well known. A successful act in their home land, they came to international attention when they signed to Emerson, Lake and Palmer's label MANTICORE in 1973. They recorded the album The World Became The World in 1974. With English lyrics, some penned by ELP and King Crimson lyricist Pete Sinfield, this edition of PFMs second album for Manticore has been re-mastered from the analogue tapes. Includes lyrics and fully restored artwork.
