Jay Jay Johnson With Clifford Brown

J.J. Johnson was an American jazz trombonist and composer. He was one of the leading trombonists in the post-swing era and was also early to embrace bebop. His original 10" album, Jay Jay Johnson, will be reissued as part of an overall Blue Note 75th anniversary vinyl initiative spearheaded by current Blue Note Records President, Don Was.

    J.J. Inc. (Speakers Corner)

He was a shining example for many European modern-jazz trombonists: J. J. Johnson, the man from Indianapolis, and the swinging half of the pair Jay and Kai. (Kai Winding was the white guy with the "cool" sound.) On this Columbia LP, recorded in August 1960, we can experience J. J. in three ways - as a soloist, composer, and arranger. To this is added a superbly well-rehearsed combo consisting of Freddie Hubbard, Clifford Jordan and one of the very best rhythm groups of late hard bop: Cedar Walton, Arthur Harper, and Albert Heath on the drums.

Thanks to having performed the works over the previous eight months in concerts before the recording, all the works sound wonderfully homogeneous, and the improvisations never once become stereotyped. The theme tune of In Walked Horace well illustrates Jay Jay's musical background, which lies somewhere between Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell and Horace Silver.
On the reverse side of the LP cover, J. J. Johnson describes his feelings during the recording session: »Wow! What a pleasure!« And the listener will certainly go along with that for the whole length of the LP!

    Musicians:

    • J.J. Johnson (trombone)

    • Clifford Jordan (tenor saxophone)

    • Freddy Hubbard (trumpet)

    • Cedar Walton (piano)

    • Arthur Harper (bass)

    • Albert Heath (drums)

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    This Is Chris (Pure Pleasure)

During 1953-1955, singer Chris Connor recorded regularly for Bethlehem. This LP has her final recordings for the label (before moving to Atlantic) with such fine sidemen as Herbie Mann (doubling on flute and tenor), pianist Ralph Sharon, guitarist Joe Puma, bassist Milt Hinton, and drummer Osie Johnson. The two-trombone team of J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding (which had recently become very popular) is prominent on four of the ten selections. Connor's cool tone, subtle, emotional delivery and haunting voice were perfect for the music of the 1950s. Highlights of this superior set include The Thrill Is Gone, Blame It On My Youth, and I Concentrate On You, but all ten numbers are rewarding.

    Musicians:

    • Chris Connor (vocal)

    • J. J. Johnson, Kai Winding (trombone)

    • Herbie Mann (flute, tenor saxophone)

    • Joe Puma (guitar)

    Revelator (Awaiting Repress)

Revelator is a dramatic leap forward for both Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks in every respect, from the songwriting and the production to Tedeschi's vocals and Trucks' guitar playing. Their new 11-piece band is an aggregation of talented musicians related by experience, and blood, and clearly adds to the notion of Revelator as a true group album.

Tedeschi and Trucks co-wrote the album's 11 tracks with an impressive list of songwriters including: Jeff Trott, John Leventhal, David Ryan Harris and Sonya Kitchell, Gary Louris (The Jayhawks), Oliver Wood (Wood Brothers), Doyle Bramhall II, Erick Krasno (Soulive), Mike Mattison, Kofi Burbridge and Oteil Burbridge.

In addition to Tedeschi and Trucks, Revelator features bassist Oteil Burbridge (Allman Brothers) and keyboardist/flutist Kofi Burbridge (The Derek Trucks Band), drummers J.J. Johnson and Tyler Greenwell, trumpeter Maurice Brown, tenor saxophonist Kebbi Williams, trombonist Saunders Sermons and harmony singers Mark Rivers and Mike Mattision.

    Blue Note Reissue

As much as I'd love to relay all kinds of anecdotes about the challenges Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray encounter during the mastering sessions, I witness none. These boys know the sound of the facility and the Van Gelder masters like the backs of their handsBack home a month later, I unpack some test pressings Chad Kassem has sent meI hear the most realistic-sounding drums ever reproduced by my system. It's as though I'm sitting at the point of creation, experiencing the same high that brought such gifted musicians together as one. Steve Hoffman, Kevin Gray, Chad Kassem, and Don MacInnis have done Rudy Van Gelder and his Blue Note artists proud. Jason Victor Serinus, Stereophile, April 2008

J.J. Johnson shared the front line with his tenor master for an exceptional session that features a unique reworking of Poor Butterfly and a great original Why Don't I. Horace Silver is the pianist, but Thelonious Monk replaces him on Reflections and both pianists alternate throughout a stunning version of Misterioso.

    Volume 2

A Blue Note essential, Sonny Rollins' Volume 2 is part of the Blue Note 75 anniversary vinyl reissue campaign -
featuring 100 titles. Key to the initiative is high quality audio at affordable prices. Album features performances
    recorded in 1960.

Outside of Paul Chambers, who was employed as Miles Davis's bassist at this time, all of the other players on these April 1957 RVG Hackensack dates were leaders of their own renowned groups; a reflection of the respect they all shared for the date leader, Sonny Rollins. Besides Chambers, with J.J. Johnson on trombone, Art Blakey behind the drums and alternating pianists Thelonious Monk and Horace Silver, who both play on the now-famous version of Misterioso, the words All-Star seem almost demeaning to this conclave.

The resulting recordings burst forth with confidence and enthusiasm, capturing a fire and passion usually found only with uninhibited live dates and not the constraints of a recording studio. Exceptional versions of Poor Butterfly and You Stepped Out Of a Dream elevate this record to monumental status.

    Watermelon, Chicken & Grits

Like their moniker suggests, the six-man hip-hop group known as Nappy Roots are raw and untamed, yet deeply connected to the musical past. The Kentucky-based collective (Big V, Ron Clutch, Fishscales, R. Prophet, B. Stille, and Skinny DeVille) first made a name for themselves with their two independently released collections - 1998's COUNTRY FRIED CESS and and 1999's NO COMB, NO BRUSH, NO FADE, NO PERM - as well as with live shows alongside such hip-hop stars as Digital Underground, Youngbloods, Jim Crowes, 112, Cashmoney Millionaire, 8 Ball, Ruffryders, MJG, Sole, and Twista. In addition, the group scored with their version of Riches To Rags (Mmmkay), which was featured on Atlantic's 1999 release, MUSIC FROM AND INSPIRED BY THE MOTION PICTURE - SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER & UNCUT.

Now, with their long-awaited Atlantic Records debut, WATERMELON, CHICKEN, AND GRITZ, Nappy Roots are ready to spread their unique sound and vision from coast to coast. The group's organically funky hip-hop stylings blend serious lyrical science and Dirty South grooves, notably on tracks like the ruminating Life's A Risk and the block-rockin' party anthem, Ballin On A Budget. Produced by such esteemed hip-hop studio whizes as Carlos Broady (The Notorious B.I.G., Lil' Kim, Black Rob, India.Aire), Mike City (Sunshine Anderson, Bilal), the Trackboyz (Abyss), Jazze Pha (Ludacris, Too $hort), and Troy Johnson (Ray-J, Lil' Mo), WATERMELON, CHICKEN, AND GRITZ is likely to propel Nappy Roots to the forefront of modern hip-hop and beyond.

    Down Home (Pure Pleasure)

Bethlehem Records was a major jazz label in the 1950's formed by Gus Wildi with an impressive roster of artists including singers Nina Simone, Carmen MacRae, Chris Conner & Mel Torme, to name a few; arrangers: Marty Paich, Russ Garcia, Frank Hunter; and musicians including: Dexter Gordon, Roland Kirk, Charles Mingus, Frank Rosolino, Herbie Mann, Stan Levey, Art Blakey, Milt Hinton, Errol Garner, Zoot Sims, Duke Ellington, J.J. Johnson and many, many others. The label distinguished itself by giving artists creative control of their projects and presented albums of rather cutting edge graphic design. Its legacy is a lengthy discography that freshly and ambitiously captured and preserved an era of truly amazing music including West Coast Cool Jazz, East Coast Bop, and Vocalists. For many of the artists, their first or greatest recorded work happened at Bethlehem. By trusting its staff and artists to make their own creative decisions, to experiment, and thus to flourish, Bethlehem actively helped create and not just document a whole and diverse era of Jazz music.
1960, when this album was recorded, was one of Zoot Sims' most productive years. The performances here are recognised as being the masterpieces of Sims' middle period.

    Bon Iver

Bon Iver is Justin Vernon returning to former haunts with a new spirit. The reprises are there, solitude, quietude, hope and desperation compressed, but always a rhythm arises, a pulse vivified by gratitude and grace notes. The winter, the legend, has faded to just that, and this is the new momentary present.

Bon Iver is often equated with just me, says Vernon, but you are who surrounds you, and for Bon Iver I wanted to invite those voices as musical catalysts. Thus on the track Beth/Rest and throughout the album, we hear the pedal steel of Greg Leisz (Lucinda Williams, Bill Frisell), the uniquely layered low end of Colin Stetsons (Tom Waits, Arcade Fire) saxophones, the riffing of Mike Lewis (Happy Apple, Andrew Bird) altos and tenors, and the lush horns of C.J. Camerieri (Rufus Wainwright, Sufjan Stevens). Bon Iver regulars Sean Carey, Mike Noyce and Matt McCaughan contributed vocals, drums and production, Rob Moose (Antony and the Johnsons, The National) helped with arranging and added strings, and fellow members of Volcano Choir, Jim Schoenecker and Tom Wincek provided processing.

Bon Iver was recorded and mixed over the course of three years at April Base Studios, a remodeled veterinarians clinic located in rural Fall Creek, Wisconsin.

    Mastered from the Original Tapes

    Gatefold Cover

The legendary Christopher Cross set the music world on fire back in 1979 with his superstar brand of rock, pop and soulful
melodies which landed him at the top of the charts almost immediately with his debut self-titled masterpiece Christopher Cross.
Augmented with the brilliant musicianship of master musicians like Michael McDonald, Nicolette Larson, Don Henley, Eric
Johnson, Larry Carlton, Valerie Carter, Billy Payne, Michael Omartian and J.D Souther, the Christopher Cross album would prove to
become the huge catalyst for things to come.

For the next two years, the singles and hit album tracks would take the artist to the top of all the popular music charts as this
masterwork would eventually take the artist to the 1981 Grammy Awards, where he would go on to win in five major categories,
including Album Of The Year, Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best New Artist Of The Year. This historic feat hasn't been
matched since, and it's easy to hear why the music tells the story.
The nine performances contained within the Christopher Cross album were of legendary proportion, which still makes this
one of the most successful albums of the classic rock era.

No stone is left unturned, as this masterpiece is loaded with hit after hit
with smashes like the number one Sailing which forever etched the title superstar to this legend, as well as more number ones and
top charters like his first hit single Ride Like The Wind which crossed unto all radio formats back in 1979. And who could forget the
amazing background vocals of fellow superstar Michael McDonald of The Doobie Brothers!
More Cross magic continues with the rockin' opener Say You'll Be Mine duet with the late great Nicolette Larson and his jazz
centerpiece Spinnin' featuring the golden voice of Valerie Carter.
As one of the most enduring albums in history, the Christopher Cross LP also shows the guitar showmanship of this legend with significant guitar workouts on tracks like Minstrel Gigolo, The Light Is On and the hit single Never Be The Same.

All in all, a collection of songs which took the fans by storm, forever associating the title superstar to the Christopher Cross name.
As another stunning release in our Friday Music Christopher Cross Original Master series, we are pleased to announce for the

    Aretha's Gold

The Aretha Franklin/Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series Begins!

Celebrate 4 Decades Of The Queen Of Soul's Greatest Hits!

    First Time 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl - #1 R&B Album In 1969!

Mastered Impeccably By Joe Reagoso From The Original Atlantic Records Tapes

Aretha Franklin will be forever known as The Queen Of Soul and one of the original classic soul pioneers like Ray
Charles, Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett who had a knack of mastering funk grooves drenched in gospel, soul, rock
    and pop.

Aretha Franklin created some of the greatest sides ever for Atlantic, where she spent almost two decades creating
some of the most masterful and beautiful soul music ever waxed.

In 1969, Aretha was honored with her first greatest hits collection by our good friends at Atlantic Records simply
titled Aretha's Gold. This stunning array of her biggest #1's and other smash hit singles, most of them featuring Duane
Allman, Arif Mardin, Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd, Roger Hawkins, Spooner Oldham and Jimmy Johnson, dominated the top
of the soul and pop charts for over a year. Her songs and soulful delivery on these hits truly illustrate how important her
force was then and still is today, over four decades since!

Aretha was important in bridging all types of rhythm and blues music to a much wider audience, churning out not
only soul smashes but pop masterpieces. Most of her biggest hits have been covered by many artists over the years as
well. Jam packed with the original Atlantic recordings of solid senders like her classics Chain of Fools, See Saw, Baby, I
Love You and of course Respect, Aretha's Gold is virtually an encyclopedia of SOUL!

Even more soul and pop classics abound as you'll hear her scream and shout with the best of the blues with Dr.
Feelgood, one of her most beautiful ballads with (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, and her soulful touch on Burt
