    Several Shades Of Why

In the quarter century since he founded Dinosaur Jr., J Mascis has created some of the era's signature songs, albums and styles. The laconically-based roar of his guitar, drums and vocals have driven a long string of bands such as Deep Wound, Dinosaur Jr., Gobblehoof, Velvet Monkeys, the Fog, Witch, Sweet Apple and he has also guested on innumerable sessions. But Several Shades of Why, recorded at Amherst, Massachusetts' Bisquiteen Studios, is J's first solo studio record, and it is an album of incredible beauty, performed with a delicacy not always associated with his work.

Nearly all acoustic, Several Shades of Why was created with the help of a few friends. Notable amongst them are Kurt Vile, Sophie Trudeau (A Silver Mount Zion), Kurt Fedora (long-time collusionist), Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene), Ben Bridwell (Band of Horses), Pall Jenkins (Black Heart Procession), Matt Valentine (The Golden Road), and Suzanne Thorpe (Wounded Knees).

Together in small mutable groupings, they conjure up classic sounds ranging from English-tinged folk to drifty, West Coast-style singer/songwriters. But every track, every note even, bears that distinct Mascis watermark, both in the shape of the tunes and the glorious rasp of the vocals. Ten brilliant tunes that quietly grow and expand until they fill your brain with the purest pleasure.

    Where Were You Then?

Further was a decidedly west coast indie rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1991 by brothers Darren and Brent Rademaker, Josh Schwartz and Kevin Fitzgerald. The Rademaker brothers along with Josh went on to form Beachwood Sparks and The Tyde respectively, Kevin Fitzgerald became the drummer for the Circle Jerks and the west coast lo-fi California indie rock sound actually became a thing with the kids. Overdosing on Weed, Surfing and Dinosaur Jrs You're Living All Over Me as well as flat out turning down major label offers, Further was fuelled by DIY spirit and their music tested the boundaries from the lowest of fidelity to the indie-est of rock...with re-leases on Bongload Records (home of Beck's Loser 12), their own Christmas Records, Ball Product (Creation Records), Fierce Panda and many more. Further received acclaim from the UK press including a 9 out of 10 review in the NME as well as Peel Session from long time fan John Peel. Further were a permanent fixtures on the LA indie scene where they shared bills with eve-ryone from the likes of Pavement, Beck, Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, Royal Trux, Urge Overkill, Archers of Loaf, Codiene...real indie-rock, you get the picture? Friends of Lou Barlow from Dino-saur Jr, Further had a knack of exploding into Dinosaurs sonic territory. When Further went on tour with Sebadoh in the 90s, Lou was asked by the NME if he had anything to say to J Mas-cis...? Lou replied smugly...ever heard FURTHER? This record compiles the best of the singles and EP tracks from 1991 to 1997 all re-mastered from the original vinyl.

    Tied To A Star

J Mascis' Tied to a Star is the follow up to his acclaimed Sub Pop debut
Several Shades of Why. The album, led by the songs "Every Morning"
and "Wide Awake," was recorded and produced by Mascis and mixed
by John Agnello at Bisquiteen in Amherst, MA.

It makes perfect sense that I was asked to write a bio for J Mascis.
Let's face it, he and I have a long history. It all started the first time I
saw him live. It was in New York City. I don't remember when or where,
but I think he was walking around. I was probably walking around, too.
The second time was also in New York, at a Mexican restaurant in the
East Village (the one that takes credit cards now, but didn't used to).
Years later I actually met him at the SXSW festival though a friend who
works at Sub Pop. I guess that meeting went well, because when that
friend from Sub Pop got married, she sat me at the same table as J.
Sounds unbelievable? I suggest you look at the picture below. Now keep
staring at that picture until... J's new acoustic
album Tied to a Star comes out on Sub Pop Records. It features
appearances by Ken Maiuri (Young@Heart Chorus), Pall Jenkins (Black
Heart Procession), Mark Mulcahy (Miracle Legion) and Chan Marshall
(Cat Power). Had I been in the area, I'm sure I would've been asked to
    play on it, too.

    Farm

The worry about the reunion of the original Dinosaur Jr. line-up, more than 20 years after their formation and legendary dissolution, was that these guys were just flogging the back catalog as a marketing gimmick. With the release of Beyond, in 2007, the band gave a hearty Marshall driven answer to those inquiring ears. Restoring the sound established by the opening hat-trick gambit of Dinosaur, You're Living All Over Me, and Bug, the Beyond record continued the band's march into rock greatness by making old ears smile and new ears bleed afresh. And now comes Fresh, Dinosaur Jr.'s first double LP and their fifth full length record by the original line-up of J Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph set to release on their new label home Jagjaguwar.

If Beyond was Dinosaur Jr.'s return to form, Farm is proof that this band continues to deliver that which makes rock worth cranking to 11. At times a wholly 70's guitar-epic, at times perfect for sitting by a babbling brook with Joni and Neil, Farm encompasses Dinosaur Jr.'s signature palette; soaring and distorted guitar, unshakable hooks, honey-rich melodies, songs that get into your head and stay there. The ear-catching Plans is nearly 7 minutes of classic whipped-topping rock dessert, while I Don't Wanna Go There is a meat-and-potatoes main dish, mixing unapologetic lead guitar with straight-ahead delivery a la James Gang or Humble Pie. These two tunes round out twelve tracks propelled by the unique energy of one of America's greatest living rock bands hitting their stride.

Farm was recorded and produced by J Mascis in his Bisquiteen studio in Amherst, Massachusetts. This 2 x vinyl LP version comes in a beautiful litho-wrapped gatefold jacket.

Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not

Let's face facts - in 2016 it is remarkable that there's a new Dinosuar Jr album to go ape over. After all, the original line-up of the band (J Mascis, Lou Barlow & Murph) only recorded three full albums during their initial run in the 1980s. Everyone was gob-smacked when they reunited in 2005. Even more so when they opted to stay together, as they have for 11 years now (on and off). And with the release of Give a Glimpse Of What Yer Not, this trio redivisus has released more albums in the 21st Century than they did in the 20th. It's enough to make a man take a long, thoughtful slug of maple-flavored bourbon and count some lucky stars.

    Glass Boys

"It's a punk rock rush, a fundamentally teenage blast
of endorphins that, if you're wired a certain way,
you can't help but feel every time their guitars lock
into a riff and the drums get rolling. Even when it's
    complicated, it's simple."
    - Stereogum, "Behind the Scenes
    of Fucked Up's Fourth Album"

On their fourth album Toronto's Fucked Up pare things
back to a single LP. In contrast to the sprawling epic
of their last album, the punk rock opera David Comes
To Life, the new album returns to rock'n'roll basics,
    verse-chorus-verse-chorus. It also features guitar
    solos, mellotron and piano.

Recorded for the first time in analogue, with Bill
Skibbe (The Dead Weather, The Kills, Lower Dens,
Andre Williams), the album is bathed in a warm,
almost romantic glow. In particular, Jonah Falco's
virtuosic drumming shines forth, each snare hit
shattering the air. Damian Abraham's throaty growl is
not less punk, but the overall effect is a more human,
    relatable Fucked Up.

While the imagery still includes the usual high-concept refrences (not least to classical mythology),
Abraham and Mike Haliechuk's lyrics mostly address
the puzzle of being in a punk rock band while having
children and being in their early 30s. "So this is what
it'd be like? Everything bathed in a harsh bright light?
Why is the impact so immense? Maybe I know it
    could have been me instead."

J Mascis, Gord Downie and George Pettit are the
    guest-star vocalists.

Ranked 460/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

This is the second studio album by alternative rock band Hole. The title is derived from a quote in the film 'Gone
With The Wind.' Considered a contemporary classic, this record was included in Rolling Stone Magazine's list of
'500 Greatest Albums Of All Time.' Features production by Sean Slade and Paul Q Kolderie with mixing by Scott Litt
    and J Mascis.

This whole album is filled with scathing fury, mostly directed at the impossible situation that confronts women when they are asked to be both wild sources of pleasure and unblemished mother figures. Live Through This uses the same recipe of punk and metal wrapped around pop melodies that made Nirvana so captivating, but Hole uses the methodology in a more conventional manner. The metal ingredient tends to dominate, perhaps because it's the simplest to master, and too often the album resembles early Heart or late Joan Jett--particularly when Courtney Love opens up with her big, wailing voice. Love externalizes her anger, blaming all her problems on the rest of the world. Self-confrontation makes for far more interesting songs. -Geoffrey Himes

    Age Of Paranoia

Vitamin X has been creating and touring their energetic brand of rock and thrash-soaked hardcore punk since the late 1990s, operating through die-hard DIY channels. The Amsterdam-based band has amassed an arsenal of albums, EPs, singles, splits, and more across a wide array of underground labels, including Havoc Records, Tankcrimes, Underestimated, AgiPunk, Refuse Records, and many others. Their two most recent albums were recorded by Steve Albini (Nirvana, Iggy Pop, Neurosis). Age Of Paranoia, the latest chapter in the band's lineage, was recorded by Igor Wouters at ARC Studios in Amsterdam and includes several special guest guitar solos by J. Mascis (Dinosaur Jr., Witch) and Bubba Dupree (Void, Soundgarden, Dave Grohl's Probot, Brant Bjork).

Age Of Paranoia offers sixteen volatile tracks, packed into a succinct, white-knuckled twenty-eight minutes. The album surges with rapid-fire punk angst, replete with ripping rock leads and raised-fist, group-chanting anthems. To complete the recording, the cover artwork is created by Marald (Baroness, Kylesa, High On Fire).

Well-known for their energetic and frenetic live shows which attract fans from across the metal, punk, and rock spectrums, Vitamin X has toured around the world several times, from Japan to the United States, from South America to Southeast Asia, and beyond. The band has played on MTV and many large festivals including Hellfest, Maryland Deathfest, and many others, and recently toured with Baroness and Harley Flannagan's Cro-Mags. Vitamin X will be presenting their new songs for the first time at festivals and shows throughout 2018; check out some live dates below and expect further updates throughout the year.

    I Bet On Sky

There is nothing quite like a Dinosaur Jr. album. The best ones are always recognizable from the first notes.

And even though J tries to trip us up by smearing Don't Pretend You Didn't Know with keyboards, it's clear from the moment he starts his vocals that this is the one and only Dinosaur Jr., long reigning kings of Amherst, Massachusetts (and anywhere else they choose to hang their toques).

I Bet on Sky is the third Dinosaur Jr. album since the original trio - J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph - reformed in 2005. And, crazily, it marks the band's 10th studio album since their debut on Homestead Records in 1985.

Back in the '80s, if anyone has suggested that these guys would be performing and recording at such a high level 27 years later, they would have been laughed out of the tree fort. The trio's early shows were so full of sonic chaos, such a weird blend of aggression and catatonia that we all assumed they would flame out fast. But the joke was on us.

The trio has taken everything they've learned from the various projects they tackled over the years, and poured it directly into their current mix. J's guitar approaches some of its most unhinged playing here, but there's a sense of instrumental control that matches the sweet murk of his vocals (not that he always remembers to exercise control on stage, but that's another milieu). This is head-bobbing riff-romance at the apex. Lou's basswork shows a lot more melodicism now as well, although his two songs on I Bet on Sky retain the jagged rhythmic edge that has so often marked his work. And Murph...well, he still pounds the drums as hard and as strong as a pro wrestler, with deceptively simple structures that manage to interweave themselves perfectly with his bandmates' melodic explosions!

    Heal

From the first bars of HEAL, the exhilarating melodic stomp of 'Goshen '97' puts you right into Tim Showalter's fervent
teenage mindset. We find him in his family's basement den in Goshen, IN, feeling alienated but even at 15 years old,
believing in the alchemy and power of music to heal your troubles. "The record is called HEAL, but it's not a soft, gentle
healing, it's like scream therapy, a command, because I ripped out my subconscious, looked through it, and saw the worst
parts. And that's how I got better." HEAL embodies that feeling of catharsis and rebirth, desperation and euphoria,
confusion and clarity. It is deeply personal and unwittingly anthemic.

Showalter was on tour, walking home on a mild autumn night in Malmo, Sweden, when he first felt the weight of the
personal crisis that would ignite him to write HEAL. "It was a culmination of pressure," Showalter recalls. "My marriage
was suffering, I'd released a record I was disappointed in, I didn't like how I looked or acted so I'd gone on tour, I was
gone about two years!I didn't take time to think about failure, but I knew I was going deeper and deeper I was thinking,
I have this life, but it's not my life,I haven't done it right "

When Showalter returned, he wrote 30 songs in three weeks, a process that proved difficult, but cathartic and at times
invigorating.Previous Strand Of Oaks records were more skeletal, raw examples of folk-rooted Americana with occasional
rock and electronic currents, that have now come to the fore.HEAL is a bold new beginning, with a thrilling full-tilt sound
that draws on Showalter's love of '70s, '80s and '90s rock and pop, with the singer and guitarist playing the intense
    valedictory confessor.

Crucial to HEAL's sound was the man who Showalter chose to mix the record, the stellar alt-rock icon John Congleton.
Showalter also re-connected with Ben Vehorn, synth expert and studio engineer extraordinaire, and drummer Steve
Clements, who provides HEAL's thunderous ,sinewy drive. Songs such as 'Shut In','Plymouth' and'Woke Up To The Light'
have a classic construction and mood, recalling '70s power-pop/ballads and the yearning ache of Big Star'slate, great Chris
Bell. Many of the songs on HEAL reveal an electronic undercarriage and towering drums that push the album's wired
dynamic to its stretching point, especially on'For Me',which expertly bridges the album's twin decades of influences. And
if 'Goshen '97'recalls the molten energy of Dinosaur Jr, that actually is J Mascis on lead guitar. Despite the initials, the
album's smoldering 7-minute epic 'JM' is not a Mascis tribute, but to the late Jason Molina, about having his music as
comfort no matter how bad things get.

Which brings usto another crisis, this time much more serious and immediate. HEAL was scheduled for mixing on Dec.
26, 2013.Driving on the freeway Christmas Day, Showalter and his wife were involved in a car accident with a semi-truck,
and were fortunate to walk away with their lives. Showalter suffered a, "pretty severe," head trauma, "which affected me
much more than Irealized at the time."Fearing delays, Showalter didn't let Congelton know about it,so the mixing session
went ahead. "Being on the verge of death, and my thoughts being so closely tied to that, changed the album's direction,"
Showalter claims. "Together, we pushed it toward a much more cathartic sound that forces the listener to where I was at
that exact moment, somewhere between almost dying and being absolutely fearless."

HEAL is not just a saviour for its creator, but for anyone who needs reminding of music's ability to heal, or just thrill.
Showalter is taking out a full band to play, and finally, the kid who wanted to be a rock star at 15 might get his chance.
Finally, he and Strand Of Oaks have much to celebrate.

    Get Back

It's doubtful that Stephen McBean set out to make The Great Rock 'N' Roll Primer when he started conjuring the
songs that would come to be Pink Mountaintops' Get Back.

The record's beginnings were reasonably straightforward: McBean had moved to Los Angeles, taken a long hiatus
from Black Mountain and an even longer one from Pink Mountaintops when he met producer Joe Cardamone, lead
singer of Icarus Line at Valley Recording Company in Burbank,CA.The two bonded quickly over Flying Nun bands,
Television Personalities, Roxy Music, Johnny Thunders, and Born Against. Joe was excited to meet someone he
actually liked. Stephen was excited to work with someone who said Sing it like you would've sung it when you were
    21. Simple enough,right?

But ask him to set the scene and you'll hear about a motorcycle shop owned by Michael Barragan, former member
of Los Angeles noise rock band Plexi. You'll hear about an endless supply of rock 'n' roll video documentation for
last minute inspiration or de-evolution in the living room.Ask who's on the record and you'll get a constellation of
greats:J Mascis(DinosaurJr &Witch),Rob Barbato (Darker My Love,The Fall & Cass McCombs), Steve Kille (Dead
Meadow), Daniel Allaire (Brian Jonestown Massacre, Cass McCombs & Darker My Love), Annie Hardy (Giant
Drag), Jon Wahl(Clawhammer), and Gregg Foreman (Cat Power & Delta 72).Randal Dunn (Sunn O))),Earth, Sun
City Girls, Boris) mixed Get Back at Avast! Studios (Bikini Kill, Mudhoney, Christ On A Crutch, Soundgarden) in
Seattle. Howie Weinburg (Nirvana, Beastie Boys, Danzig, Ramones, Slayer) mastered it in Laurel Canyon.

Ask about the record itself and McBean will tell you about Alleys, curbs, walls, and cigarette stained gig flyers. An
island on the Pacific coast. Fake British towns. Slayer posters. The beauty of youth. It's about listening to Driver's Seat
and 'Guns of Brixton' and hotboxing The Duster. And suddenly it becomes clear: when the aliens do touch down
and they don't know rock 'n'roll, you can play them Get Back start to finish, and that'll be all they need.

Get Back comes out swinging with Ambulance City, a head-trip of a song with a chugging, insistent, oddly timeless
guitar riff sitting front and center. The Second Summer of Love needs almost no explanation; it dives into 80s VHS
saturation and never comes up for air. Sell Your Soul is a deep sigh and a motorcycle ride, a roll in the grass
lamenting summertime blues with a little grit and a little harmony. And North Hollywood Microwaves is
downright obscene. But what better way to start Side B than this? You can listen at hushed volumes so your parents
don't hear, you can crank it in a dorm room, you can smirk to yourself from the safety of rock 'n'roll's old age.You
start to wonder- why don't all Side Bs start with a song like this one

The number of platitudes in music hit critical mass years ago, and among those tropes is that annoying, inescapable
mantra:rock 'n'roll is undefinable. And yeah, sure, that's true. It's different things to different people. It starts with
guitars, maybe, and ends with a stage-dive, or spit, or feedback. Rock 'n'roll is drugs, is rebellion, is youth, is sex, is
cosmic. It's wanting more than you have.Rock 'n'roll is butts and cigarette butts. And Pink Mountaintops might not
be the best-known band ever to make rock 'n' roll, but in Get Back they just might have written its scripture -- an
exploration and celebration of what, exactly, rock 'n'roll can be.

    Heavy Blanket (Out Of Stock)

J Mascis rounds up a couple partners-in-crime from his adolescence with an eye and ear towards shredding harder, wailing louder, and generally melting faces even more brutally than ever before. Stoner dirtbags cloaked in mystery, J's longtime buddies Pete Cougar and Johnny Pancake lay down the heavy rhythm base for J's massive licks and blistering guitar mastery. Ever wondered what Band of Gypsies would sound like if you mixed it up with Japanese hard psych and smoked it through a giant power bong? Well, now you know. Don't say we didn't warn you.
