Recorded in 1958, this legendary date with the still-undersung Sonny Clark in the leader's chair also featured a young Jackie McLean on alto (playing with a smoother tone than he had before or ever did again), trumpeter Art Farmer, and the legendary rhythm section of bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones, both from the Miles Davis band.

    Jackie (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Jackie is the upcoming biographical film from Chilean director Pablo Larraín. Starring Natalie Portman (Black Swan) in the title role, the movie follows Jacqueline Kennedy from the days when she was First Lady of the White House to the aftermath of the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Critically lauded since its debut at the Venice Film Festival where it won the Best Screenplay Award, Jackie also received the Platform Prize at the Toronto International Film Festival and is a heavy favorite going into awards season. The score to Jackie was composed by experimental British musician Mica Levi, best known for her ethereal score to 2013's sleeper hit "Under the Skin". Mournful and eerie with a touch of the surreal, Levi has delivered an unmistakable musical tapestry every bit as iconic as Jackie O herself.

    Blue Note Reissue

As much as I'd love to relay all kinds of anecdotes about the challenges Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray encounter during the mastering sessions, I witness none. These boys know the sound of the facility and the Van Gelder masters like the backs of their handsBack home a month later, I unpack some test pressings Chad Kassem has sent meI hear the most realistic-sounding drums ever reproduced by my system. It's as though I'm sitting at the point of creation, experiencing the same high that brought such gifted musicians together as one. Steve Hoffman, Kevin Gray, Chad Kassem, and Don MacInnis have done Rudy Van Gelder and his Blue Note artists proud. Jason Victor Serinus, Stereophile, April 2008

...these first five Acoustic Sounds Blue Note re-issues are pure bop genius...The best news is that Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman were keen enough to do nothing more than gently clean up the masters, bringing us even closer to the hard bop edge. The 45 rpm pressings that I received were all super quiet with every last drop of resolution from the master tapes. I had almost forgotten just how good Paul Chambers and Phil Joe were together as the backbone of these groups. I've always loved this music but I didn't remember it sounding this good! Hank Mobley offers us some brilliant sax bits on one of Kenny Dorham's finest recordings, Whistle Stop and Dexter Gordon's performance blew me away as well. The biggest surprise were the Lee Morgan records. I suggest turning these up loud, since they possess unlimited energy and some hooks that will knock you out. Amazing! Just a small warning: Once you start playing these Blue Note recordings you will be hooked. The good news is that Acoustic Sounds is working on at least 20 more of these jazz gems. So make sure your turntable has a setting for 45 rpm, clean your stylus occassionally, and get ready to be transported to nirvana. - Dan Babineau, Tone Audio, No. 14 2008, www.tonepublications.com

In terms of composition, leadership and playing, this is probably Jackie McLean's greatest album, culled from two different sessions, separated by 20 months. A sextet session with Tina Brooks and Blue Mitchell.

In the case of this 1956 Prestige release, Jackie's Pal is none other than trumpeter Bill Hardman who McLean champions justifiably here after the pair left the Charles Mingus workshop and before they both joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. The excellent date finds the jazz greats in a quintet rounded out by Mal Walldron (piano), Paul Chambers (bass) and Philly Joe Jones (drums).

    Any Other Way

Known by genre aficionados as one of the
greatest singers and most riveting stage
presences in soul music, Jackie Shane has
    remained largely unknown outside Toronto,
where her career briefly flowered in the
1960s. Beyond her unmistakable gift of the
gab, Shane is a pioneer of transgender rights,
born in a male body but unabashedly living
her entire life as a woman at a time when to
    do so seemed unthinkable.

    Any Other Way
is the first artist-approved collection of
Ms. Shane's work, collecting all six of her
45s and every highlight from the legendary
1967 live sessions at the Sapphire Tavern,
    including three mind blowing, previouslyunreleased
    tracks. Rob Bowman's 20,000
word essay is Jackie's first communication
with the public in nearly half a century,
telling for the first time ever Jackie Shane's
    story in her own words.

This deluxe two album set is

1957's Lights Out finds an up and coming Jackie McLean in his second session as a leader with fine accompaniment from Donald Byrd (trumpet), Arthur Taylor (drums) and Doug (Watkins). Primarily hard bop in nature, the 6-song set also features blues undertones and the occasional shared improvisation by McLean and Byrd.

    New Soil

New Soil wasn't the first session Jackie McLean recorded for Blue Note, but it was the first one released, and as the title suggests, the first glimpses of McLean's desire to push beyond the limits of bop are already apparent. They're subtle, of course, and nowhere near as pronounced, as they would be in just a few years' time, but as with the 1959 material later issued on Jackie's Bag hints of Ornette Coleman's stream-of-consciousness melodic freedom are beginning to find their way into McLean's improvisations. His playing is just a touch more angular than the ear expects, especially given the very bluesy nature of pieces like McLean's 11-minute vamp, Hip Strut, and pianist Walter Davis Jr.'s infectious boogie-woogie Greasy. Coleman's influence is most apparent on McLean's Minor Apprehension, where the freewheeling, Coleman-esque main theme is paralleled by trumpeter Donald Byrd in a definite nod to Don Cherry.

Jackie McLean's aptly titled 1956 release 4,5 and 6 features recordings from the innovative alto saxophonist in three different settings including tracks with a quartet, an expanded quintet and even a sextet. Supporting players such as Hank Mobley (tenor sax), Donald Byrd (trumpet), Mal Waldron (piano), Doug Watkins (bass) and Art Taylor (drums) join in on the proceedings in disparate incarnations, all with winning results. The dynamic 6-song set is highlighted by Waldron's own stirring ballad Abstraction and the sextet's sprawling version of Charlie Parkers Confirmation.

    4, 5, And 6

This album is one in a series of special 2014 releases commemorating the 65th anniversary of Prestige Records and the 90th birthday of legendary
    recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder.

Before Jackie McLean made some of the great jazz albums of the 1960s for Blue Note, he recorded for the Prestige label. 4, 5 and 6 is the best of all his
pre-Blue Note sessions. Recorded over two dates in July 1956, the album features future Blue Note colleague Donald Byrd joining in on trumpet for the
album's two originals Abstraction and Contour (penned by Kenny Drew and Mal Waldron respectively). Another Blue Noter, tenor-saxophonist Hank
Mobley, even makes it a sextet on Charlie Parker's Confirmation. The remaining three selections are quartet pieces (hence the album's title) with Mal
Waldron on piano, Doug Watkins on bass and Art Taylor on drums. Newly reissued on vinyl, this is a 'MUST HAVE' addition to all great jazz collections.

    Capuchin Swing

One of McLean's more underrated albums from a plethora of Blue Note releases, 1960's Capuchin Swing finds the bebop alto saxophonist in fine form on a mix of covers and originals. While McLean's future fascination with Ornette Coleman's free-form innovations can be sensed in some solos here, the majority of the album is in a classic hard bop vein. Like contemporaries Hank Mobley, Sonny Clark, and Lee Morgan, though, McLean doesn't just churn out pat jam-session fare, but comes up with consistently provocative charts and solos. Eschewing any ballad cuts, McLean focuses on mid- to fast-tempo swingers and blues. Standouts include originals like Francisco and Condition Blue and choice renditions of Just for Now and Don't Blame Me. McLean enlists a sparkling lineup of hard bop stars, including trumpeter Blue Mitchell, pianist Walter Bishop, Jr., bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Art Taylor. Mitchell particularly impresses, matching many of McLean's own inspired flights with his supple and progressive playing. Along with other fine Blue Note titles like Jackie's Bag and Bluesnik, Capuchin Swing makes for a great introduction to McLean's extensive catalog.

    Back To Birth

'Back To Birth'-Greene's seventh album and his Yep Roc debut-is more than worthy of some serious attention. The 11-song set showcases the multitalented artist's uncanny knack for synthesizing his deep affinity for multiple American roots styles into timeless, personally-charged music. Armed with a persuasive voice, a vivid songwriting skill and an instinctive mastery of several instruments, Greene has carved out a unique musical niche, and 'Back To Birth' marks another creative landmark in his already-compelling body of work.

    Swing, Swang, Swingin' (Discontinued)

Prior to 1959, Jackie McLean was an important young Turk whose sharp tone and intense style on alto grew out of Charlie Parker yet were very much his own. Growing up in New York, his neighbors included such friends as Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins. By 1951 he was recording with Miles Davis and other associations in the 1950s included Charles Mingus and two years with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. But all of that was a prelude to his recording 21 brilliant, explorative and frequently explosive albums for Blue Note during 1959-67. While McLean became one of the first jazz musicians of his generation to stretch beyond hard bop into freer explorations inspired by Ornette Coleman, Swing, Swang, Swingin' is a straight ahead affair in which he mostly puts his stamp on standards. Few versions of Let's Face The Music And Dance and I Love You have ever had this much intensity and, when McLean digs into the ballad What's New, he gives it a fiery passion that had never been heard before. Jackie McLean not only swings and swangs but he burns with the urgency, agony and ecstasy of the 1960s.

Although a Blue Note regular at the time on sessions by Donald Byrd, Art Blakey and others, Walter Davis made only one album for the label. With Byrd, Jackie McLean, Sam Jones and Art Taylor, he explores six of his finest compositions. Davis possessed the ability to write music that was funky and catchy, but still progressive, which explains why he was one of Art Blakey's favorite pianists and composers. Minor Mind, Make It and Millie's Delight are among the album's highlights.

    I Hate Music

I Hate Music is Majesty's dark twin. It's similarly aggressive, often moreso, and every bit as energetic. It reflects the joys of a life spent immersed in music (Me & You & Jackie Mittoo, Trees of Barcelona), but there's a dark
undercurrent as well. That title isn't tongue-in-cheek, but it's really more a question than a statement: When you're 20, lazy co-workers and romantic missteps number among your biggest worries; two decades later, life's bigger questions knock
    louder and louder, demanding answers.
