    On Stage

The album was recorded live over several German and Japanese dates in late 1976 during the Rising world tour. Many of the tracks were spliced together from different dates by producer Martin Birch, and the running order was changed to more easily fit four sides of vinyl. The recording features the customary introduction to a Rainbow show - the classic quote from the The Wizard of Oz, Toto: I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore. We must be over the rainbow! with the last word repeated as an echo, then the actual band plays a musical phrase from the song Somewhere Over the Rainbow before breaking into Kill the King.

While Kraftwerk was emerging in Europe and became an influence and inspiration to the Japanese superstars, YMO stayed true to their unique sound.

YMO's second album Solid State Survivor was released in 1979, and represented numerous crossover tracks from Techno to New Wave. Solid State Survivor is probably the most sampled YMO album, as over the years several artists performed numerous covers of Behind The Mask. Sing In Japanese

In keeping with the theme of their last release, Me First And The Gimme Gimmes decided to tackle the proud musical tradition of another country, rather than a specific genre. This time they set their sights on the land of the rising sun, Japan, the birthplace of Karaoke. The fact that the Gimme Gimmes are one of the most renowned cover bands around makes this a match made in heaven.

Spike's sweet crooning is universally pleasing, as he proves by deftly belting out the 6 tracks on Sing In Japanese in the dialect in which they were originally written. The boys ply their fun-loving, punk rock style to these Japanese classics, resulting in 6 up-tempo sing-alongs peppered with guitar riffs hotter than wasabi.

Announcing Overjoyed, the first album in 13 years from legendary punk band Half Japanese. One of the most influential bands of all time, Jad Fair and Half Japanese spearheaded the DIY and Lo-Fi movements, influencing countless bands such as Sonic Youth, Neutral Milk Hotel, Daniel Johnston, and perhaps most notably, Kurt Cobain (who ranked Half Japanese amongst his top 50 favorites, had them open the In Utero tour, and was wearing their t-shirt when he died). Without exaggeration, Half Japanese is one of the most important bands in the history of music. Overjoyed was recorded and produced by John Dieterich of Deerhoof, and ranks amongst the best albums of the band's catalog.

This box set includes some of the band's most acclaimed albums, new liner notes from David Fair and several new pieces of art from Jad Fair. All albums restored to their original track listings.

Be careful. You can't unlearn information. I think that the best that you can hope for is a bad memory, but our brains are very remarkable and it is very difficult to actually unlearn something. I came upon this realization too late to help me with visual arts. I had already been taught about proportions and perspective. It's very hard to draw someone in the background larger than their friend in the foreground. Anyone farther away would look smaller. That is how our eyes see them and my brain knows this. I cannot turn off this knowledge and draw it the other way around. I can choose to ignore it, but that is not the same. That is a strategy for dealing with the situation, but not as freeing as simple ignorance would be. It is a nagging strategy that whispers the rules and acknowledges your participation in their breaking.

Luckily, with music, I do not carry the burden of knowledge. I was not educated in its terms and rules. I am not bound by its limits.

I know that I have guitar skills. I have played around with one enough to know what feels right to me. If I were to turn it upside down and attempt to play it in a left-handed manner, my ability would feel awkward and diminished. I am not unskilled; I am merely untrained. For me, this is the ideal situation. Others may prefer acquiring rules and limits. I prefer that my art be directed by my heart rather than my brain.

I have played in bands for nearly 40 years. In all of that time I have only learned three chords. I have resisted acquiring more. If I continue at this rate I am at risk of knowing six chords forty years from now. Instead, I am consciously slowing down. Hopefully in four decades I will remember even less about music convention than I know today.

Forty years is a long time to wait. In the meantime, here's Half Japanese Vol 2. It might get better in the future, but Vol 2 is here already.

    Clear Vinyl

Clear vinyl (in clear plastic sleeve with black lettering) - limited to 500 copies. Avant-garde composer and sound installation artist Takehisa Kosugi (musical director of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company) has led the Japanese avant-garde music scene since the early 1960s. In 1969 he formed the Taj Mahal Travellers, a musical collective that travelled the world in a VW minibus creating Fluxus-influenced improvised multimedia sound events. This double album (divided into two LPs), recorded live at the Nippon Columbia Studio in Tokyo in 1974, was the groups final effort before disbanding. Here Kosugi and the Travellers blend Eastern and Western instrumentation, vocal chants and electronics to create free-form psych-laden drones. This historic album is an essential and influential piece of Japanese avant rock

Two legends, together again. Teenage Fanclub's Norman Blake and Half Japanese's Jad Fair have teamed up to bring you their new magnum opus, "Yes". Encompassing all the songwriting eccentricities that have made
these guys famous, this new collaborative album also features some of the most genteel, engagingly catchy, and downright adorable music in recent memory.

Norman Blake and Jad Fair originally collaborated over a decade ago on the Teenage Fanclub and Jad Fair album "Words of Wisdom and Hope" (Domino/Alternative Tentacles). Unlike the simple, aggressive style of
Half Japanese, the 13 new tracks on "Yes" feature refined, guitar-laden power-pop and saccharin-sweet melodies, accompanied by backup singers and layered horn arrangements. Fair's characteristically-manic vocal style is still present, but when coupled with the head-bopping, articulately-layered arrangements of Norman Blake, the result is a potently earnest album that is brimming with positivity.

Widely considered to be the Barbra Streisand of Japan, Saori Yuki released her debut album in Japan in 1969 and went on to make over 30 albums in her 42 years. Yuki discovered Pink Martini after the band covered her song Taya Tan for their 2007 album Hey Eugene! Most recently, she sang a verse of Silent Night in Japanese for the bands hit 2010 holiday album Joy To The World.

In honor of the year of her debut release, Saori Yuki partnered with Pink Martini and producer Thomas M. Lauderdale to create a loving tribute to the music released in 1969. Featuring Japanese pop hits alongside internationally recognized tunes like Jorge Bens Mas que nada and Puff the Magic Dragon, 1969 is a brilliant collaboration featuring Thomas M. You Are There

Throughout their six-year career, this Japanese quartet has ascended consistently in both popularity and critical acclaim. But still elusive is the successful translation of their powerful and violently beautiful live performances to their recordings, until now. Once again recorded by Steve Albini, the album extends the cinematic drama of 2003's Walking Cloud And Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered And The Sun Shined while surpassing the sinister heaviness of 2002's lauded One Step More And You Die. If Walking Cloud was a nuclear winter, then You Are There is the post-war rebirth. This band isn't heavy like Black Sabbath. They're heavy like Beethoven.

Shugo Tokumaru has wowed critics and fans the world over with a sound that draws as much from classic Beatles-esque melodies as his unique spin on Japanese pop.

Hailing from Tokyo, Japan, Shugo Tokumaru is a gifted songwriter and multiinstrumentalist responsible for producing every sound heard on his records. With Port Entropy, Tokumaru takes the magic of his previous full-length, Exit, and expands on it.

Throughout Port Entropy his arrangements soar to new heights, most prominently in the coda of standout track Lahaha. Conversely, the twinkling piano lullaby Linne showcases a quieter, more introspective side of Tokumarus songwriting.

The Seal of the Blue Lotus

Originally released on John Fahey's Takoma Records in 1965, The Seal of the Blue Lotus is the debut album from American guitar soli legend Robbie Basho. In college Basho immersed himself in the study of Asian art and culture, even changing his last name to that of the Japanese poet Matsuo Basho, and his music shows a much greater Eastern influence than contemporaries like John Fahey and Peter Lang. Basho was particularly entranced by the raga form which is apparent in classics like "Dravidian Sunday" from this album. A guitar soli masterwork reissued here on 180 gram vinyl.
