    New Moon Daughter (Pure Pleasure)

This is no easy listen ... sparse, complex, often brooding arrangements coupled with Cassandra Wilson's deep, earthy voice and complicated phrasing demand your attention. Waver and you're lost. But ... give this album the listening time & space it deserves and reap the rewards. Unusual, highly atmospheric tracks that combine superb singing and marvellously 'distant' musical backings to weave real magic.

Cassandra Wilson's own excellent, jazz tinged compositions sit alongside a stunning set of ingenious covers from a highly diverse spectrum of composers. Last Train To Clarksville is transformed from a catchy pop song into a stripped-down and genuinely effective jazz vocal work-out. Harvest Moon slows down Neil Young's already wistful ballad to an almost painful level and, in so doing, takes it to an even higher level of gentle reflection. Hank Williams' I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry & U2's Love Is Blindness are transformed into three in the morning jazz club classics.
The vocals and backing to Robert Johnson's 32-20 are simplified to the point where only the essence of the blues is allowed to shine and, Lewis Allan's Strange Fruit becomes as desolate and challenging as it's horrific lyrics.

Clever, very effective and worth the required effort!

    2 LP On Clear Vinyl

If you were going to envision the ultimate avant-garde meeting-of-the-minds jam session, who would you pick? Even the most hopeful fan of strange and innovative music couldn't have seen this one coming: on one afternoon in 1986, at Coney Island's dilapidated freak show, space-age avant-jazz genius Sun Ra met avant-garde serious music composer John Cage in an unforgettable performance.

You couldn't imagine two figures more opposite. Cage was known for his unusual approach to composition, using objects such as radios and television sets, as well as pure silence, as instruments, often encouraging his musicians to do other things at their whim on stage. Sun Ra, on the other hand, was a jazz arranger known for his space-age approach to jazz, adding free-jazz and surrealist elements into a musical form that Cage often disdained -- improvisational music. And yet, for one afternoon, they pooled their talents -- Ra playing keyboards, leading his small group and reading his unusual poetry; Cage performing vocal readings and passages of vocal sound -- plus his trademark silence -- designed to baffle and disorient. The combination is breathtaking, both organic and mechanical, free-form and totally composed.

For the very first time, Modern Harmonic presents the full and unexpurgated concert from 1986, stretched out across two LPs. In addition to never-before-heard songs and musical passages, this album at last presents the long-rumored co-performance between the two musical giants, all lovingly packaged in new artwork that captures the stark brilliance of the music. Take yourself back to 1986 and a once-in-a-lifetime performance that you can finally hear as it was intended.

    Calendar Girl

Jazz critic Will Friedwald has stated that Julie London's records were so popular in the 1950s mainly because she looked so drop-dead gorgeous on the album covers. The marketing hook behind Calendar Girl may just be the main example for those critical of London's musical career, since its sleeve has made it a prized collector's item. The famous wraparound cover depicts cheesecake shots of London posed for every month of the year, while original issues of the album included a more-than-suggestive insert photo of the singer stretched out in bed. While Friedwald's correct about London's physical beauty, he's wrong in suggesting that the vocalist didn't have the talent to go along with her looks. Like Chet Baker, Julie London had an extremely limited vocal range but she did the most with what she had, possessing a special knack for torch songs that cast her in the role of a woman constantly being destroyed by love in general and by men in particular. The cover concept of Calendar Girl is carried over from the concept album, which features a narrative of romance lost and found for each month of the year before ending with one final tune called The Thirteenth Month (which is illustrated by that insert picture of London in bed). Since there aren't quality standards for every month of the year, one of Calendar Girl's pleasures can be found in the numbers written especially for the album, particularly those penned by Bobby Troup, London's husband. The jazz-oriented Troup hit pay dirt with such fine compositions as Route 66, Daddy, and The Meaning of the Blues, but too few of his smart, witty songs have been widely recorded. Calendar Girl is a fun, if often bittersweet, ride and a must-have for fans of classic vocal pop and lounge music.

    Coming Forth By Day

Coming Forth By Day is described as Cassandra Wilson's moody, soulful showcase for contemporary yet timeless interpretations of standards associated with her musical inspiration, according to information from Legacy Recordings.

"Cassandra Wilson is one of the world's most elegant and tasteful artists. Her decision to channel the spirit of Billie Holiday on her new album is a perfect complement to Legacy's plans for celebrating Lady Day's centennial, said Adam Block of Legacy Recordings. "It's an absolute treat to work with Cassandra in the realization of this unexpected and sublimely beautiful music.

Coming Forth By Day was produced by Nick Launay, known as Nick Cave's producer for the last decade among many other adventurous credits. Wilson recorded the music at Seedy Underbelly studios in Los Angeles at Seedy Underbelly studios, accompanied by an A list musical team including producer Launay (Nick Cave, Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Arcade Fire), guitarists T Bone Burnett and Nick Zinner of the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, string arranger Van Dyke Parks and rhythm section The Bad Seeds (drummer Thomas Wydler and bassist Martyn P. Casey).

Wilson is a leading American jazz vocalist/musician/songwriter/producer who has received many awards and accolades, including: two Grammys (1996, Best Jazz Vocal Performance for New Moon Daughter; 2009, Best Jazz Vocal Album for Loverly);Down Beat's Female Jazz Vocalist of the Year (1994-1996); the Montreal International Jazz Festival's Miles Davis Prize (1999); named America's Best Singer in Time magazine (2001); honorary doctorate in the Arts from Millsaps College (2003); added to the Mississippi Blues Trail (2010); and taken home the BET Soul Train Award (2011, Best Traditional Jazz Album for Silver Pony).

    Take Me To The Alley

Liquid Spirit - which followed Porter's critically-acclaimed and GRAMMY-nominated albums Water (2010) and Be Good (2012) - was released in the Fall of 2013 and quickly grew into a global phenomenon, selling a million albums worldwide and becoming the most streamed jazz album of all-time with over 20 million streams. The album sold Platinum in the U.K. and Germany, and in the U.S. Porter made his first-ever national TV appearances on The Tonight Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live while ESQUIRE and NPR Music both declared him "America's Next Great Jazz Singer." Liquid Spirit also won Porter his first GRAMMY Award in 2014 for Best Jazz Vocal Album while also earning him a Best Traditional R&B Performance nomination for his affecting ballad "Hey Laura."

In the Fall of 2015 Porter finally found the time to return to the studio in New York City to record Take Me To The Alley. As he's done on his previous three albums, Porter teamed with producer Kamau Kenyatta to craft a collection of stirring originals that juxtapose the personal and political. His partnership with Kenyatta started in the mid-1990s when he was a student at San Diego State University (Porter began his college years playing football on a full athletic scholarship before a shoulder injury diverted him into a music career). It was through Kenyatta's mentorship that Porter's professional musical career began.

Reinforcing their well-honed rapport is the return of Porter's core accompanying musicians - pianist and music director Chip Crawford, bassist Aaron James, drummer Emanuel Harrold, alto saxophonist Yosuke Sato, and tenor saxophonist Tivon Pennicott. Singer Alicia Olatuja, trumpeter Keyon Harrold, and organist Ondrej Pivec also make appearances throughout.

Billie Holiday (born Eleanora Fagan; April 7, 1915 - July 17, 1959) was an American jazz singer and songwriter. Holiday was a seminal influence on jazz and pop singing. Her vocal style, strongly inspired by jazz instrumentalists, pioneered a new way of manipulating phrasing and tempo. Above all, she was admired for her deeply personal and intimate approach to singing.

"Billie Holiday Sings" was her first full-length album, released in the United States by Clef Records in 1952 in the 10-inch format. "An Evening with Billie Holiday" was the second 10 inch LP studio album released in 1953.

The Hottest New Group In Jazz (Pure Pleasure)

The premier jazz vocal act of all time, Lambert, Hendricks & Ross revolutionized vocal music during the late '50s and early '60s by turning away from the increasingly crossover slant of the pop world to embrace the sheer musicianship inherent in vocal jazz. Applying the concepts of bop harmonies to swinging vocal music, the trio transformed dozens of instrumental jazz classics into their own songs, taking scat solos and trading off licks and riffs in precisely the same fashion as their favorite improvising musicians. Vocal arranger Dave Lambert wrote dense clusters of vocal lines for each voice that, while only distantly related, came together splendidly. Jon Hendricks wrote clever, witty lyrics to jazz standards like Summertime, Moanin', and Twisted, and Annie Ross proved to be one of the strongest, most dexterous female voices in the history of jazz vocals. Together Lambert, Hendricks & Ross paved the way for vocal groups like Manhattan Transfer while earning respect from vocalists and jazz musicians alike.

Newport Jazz Festival: Live At Carnegie Hall (Pure Pleasure)

This is a wonderful live album. Recorded toward the end of Ella's career, by concert's end it is apparent that she has about lost her voice, but not the audience's adoration. The album showcases her in various settings: with the (obviously) reconstituted Chick Webb Orchestra, with Ellis Larkins, with Joe Pass and with Tommy Flanagan (of course); the album also has some nods to the Webb Orchestra, noteworthy for late-career blowing by 'Lockjaw' Davis. Highlights: Nice Work If You Can Get It, Good Morning Heartache (an intended and most worthy tribute to Lady Day), Miss Otis Regrets, the first encore of Some of these Days, and intended set-ender of Ella doing what she does best, scatting through Lemon Drop.

Wouter Hamel (born 1977) is a Dutch Pop singer. After winning the Dutch Jazz Vocal Competition in 2005, Hamel received significant attention from the Dutch media. He has since performed on several television shows and on the internationally-known North Sea Jazz Festival. His debut album, for which he wrote all of the twelve songs, was released to critical acclaim. It peaked at #40 on the Dutch Albums Top 100. Hamel also released the song "Breezy" as a single in Japan, where it reached #36 on the Tokio Hot 100 chart. In 2011, Hamel released his third album Lohengrin and also supported Caro Emerald on her tour in Germany.

Wouter and producer Benny Sings joined forces for the new album Pompadour. Their combined efforts have previously resulted in two successful albums: Hamel (2007) and Nobody's Tune (2009). "The Lights" is a Pop song full of sparkle and warmth and it sets the mood perfectly for the upcoming album Pompadour.

    For One To Love

CÉcile McLorin Salvant, the wildly talented 25-year-old singer, songwriter, visual artist and illustrator, became a breakout star with 2013's 'WomanChild.' Her follow-up, 'For One To Love,' is a courageous statement of contrast: love and longing, delight and desire.

CÉcile composed five original songs for 'For One To Love.' Each of these tunes explore the album's underlying themes and display CÉcile's strong personality, sharp intellect, coy humor, unfettered romanticism, and penetrating honesty. The thematic elements continue to grow with a smoldering take on Burt Bacharach's bygone Wives and Lovers and Growlin' Dan by Blanche Calloway, the first woman to lead an all-male orchestra. What's The Matter Now, originally popularized by Bessie Smith, is a juxtaposition of feel versus subject matter: a plea for fair treatment enclosed in a playful blues. Le Mal De Vivre, written by French singer Barbara in 1966, is a stark ballad performed by CÉ cile in French.

'For One To Love' is a riotous showcase for this riveting voice: quivering highs and soul-shaking lows, all delivered with grace and style. Salvant has reunited with decorated young pianist Aaron Diehl, joined by his trio of Paul Sikivie on bass and Lawrence Leathers on drums. Together this ensemble swings and swirls, nimbly hanging on CÉcile's every cry, snarl and coo. A gifted illustrator, CÉcile accents the albums poignant music with original artwork.

CÉcile was born in Miami, Fl and studied French law, baroque and jazz vocal performance in Aix-En-Provence before winning the 2010 Thelonious Monk competition. 'WomanChild' was praised by the NY Times, NPR, won Downbeat's Album of the Year and earned CÉcile her first Grammy nomination. She now lives in Harlem. An extensive international tour is planned through 2015 including performances at the Newport Jazz Festival, Hollywood Bowl, La Villette (Paris) the Johannesburg Joy of Jazz Festival and London Jazz Festival.

Phoebe Snow died at the age of 60, but her art will live forever. Her debut album, reproduced here as a fantastic 45 RPM double LP set, witnesses a masterful nine-track lineup. Most of the songs were written by a 23-year old Phoebe Snow, including her best-known smash hit Poetry Man. She Was Too Good To Me

Chet Baker was one of the most important representatives of the West Coast Cool Jazz movement. His heroin addiction is well documented with his exploits and misadventures wrapped in legendary anecdotes, but thankfully his life story never managed to overshadow his unmistakable talent. Chet Baker has one of the most recognisable sounds of all the jazz musicians in the cannon; his trumpet playing is intimate, simple and delicate with a hint of melancholy that tears at the heartstrings. She Was Too Good To Me was released in 1974 on Creed Taylor's CTI label after a 4 year absence from the scene. And what a comeback: excellent vocal Cool Jazz tunes are interlude with instrumental goodness from the undisputed master of the trumpet.

Previously unreleased live broadcast of intimate Tom Waits performance featuring incredible rarities - plus interviews with the man himself.

Securing his first proper record deal with David Geffen's Asylum label in 1972, Tom Waits would go on to release seven records with the label in as many years. The first of these, Closing Time, was released in March 73 and comprised the most unique collection of original compositions that American critics and consumers had witnessed since the 1960s heyday of Beatles, Beach Boys and Bob Dylan. Informed by the wordsmiths of the beat generation, the blues howlers of a former age, the smooth jazz vocals of Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, and the country flavoured ballads that Ray Charles had turned to in the early 1960s, Waits developed a cult following with his portrayals of modern American domesticity and love sought and lost. On the 12th August 1973 Waits was to be found performing an in-house set for the renowned L.A. radio series Folk Scene, broadcast weekly by KPFK FM, Tom's performances were augmented with interviews that provide a fascinating insight into his career at this time. Included too on this LP are five additional tracks from a performance Tom made in Santa Monica a few months later on 10th November 1973. Also the subject of an FM broadcast, two further cuts from The Heart of Saturday Night are complimented by a triumvirate of Waits rarities that have seldom been heard before or since.

    A Gasser (Pure Pleasure)

Although best known as a member of the vocalese supergroup Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, the great jazz singer Annie Ross's solo albums are gems unto themselves and A Gasser! from 1959 is the finest of them all. Miss Ross is in peak vocal form here and is joined by the great Zoot Sims on saxophone and much of the same band featured on the Lambert, Hendricks & Ross classic The Swingers. Don't expect any of the vocal acrobatics of the Lambert, Hendricks & Ross recordings however. This is straight-ahead jazz singing by one of the great singers in her prime. From the wry wit of Everything I've Got through the sheer perfection and beauty of You're Nearer, this set is a must-have for jazz vocal fans. Highly recommended..

    • Jim Hall, Billy Bean (guitar)

    • Monte Budwig (bass)

    • Mel Lewis, Frank Capp (drums)

    Recording: February & March 1959

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Louis And The Good Book

An unusual album in the Louis Armstrong canon, this collection of gospel songs, spirituals, homilies, and comic vignettes was the only religious album this determinedly secular musician recorded. Backed by a gospel vocal group led by the celebrated jazz arranger Sy Oliver, Armstrong performs a variety of religious-themed favorites, including Ezekiel Saw De Wheel, Going to Shout All Over God's Heaven, and Didn't it Rain, as well as Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat from GUYS AND DOLLS. There's an affecting version of the traditional spiritual Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child, and a particular highlight is the inclusion of two comic sermons by the musician's alter ego, Elder Eatmore.

Originally released in 1970, Starsailor is the most unique and uncompromising release of Tim Buckley's brief but productive career. Combining jazz and avant-garde elements with folk-rock and Buckley's acrobatic vocal performances this album is one of the most experimental singer-songwriter records of all time. Though it was a commercial failure at the time of its release Starsailor has since become a sought after cult classic.
