    Grace

Ranked 303/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Jeff Buckley's Grace is a masterpiece. The critically acclaimed breakthrough is filled with sweeping choruses, bombastic arrangements, searching lyrics, and above all, the richly textured voice of Buckley himself.

Recorded in the fall of 1993 at Bearsville Recording Studio in Woodstock, NY, Grace features 10 tracks highlighting Buckley's incredible stylistic range. The late singer/songwriter/guitarist and company create a unique blend of sound and vision with emotion-drenched vocals laced throughout extraordinary instrumental work. The record features seven originals, one cover performed with his band and two covers done solo. Highlights include the unforgettable Last Goodbye and Buckleys immaculate cover of Leonard Cohens Hallelujah.

Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk

    Import

    Remastered

Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk is the
collection of studio tracks and four-track demos
recorded by Jeff Buckley in the summer of 1996
    and early 1997.

Buckley had been working on an album to be called
My Sweetheart, the Drunk, but the album had
yet to be finished at the time of his death. It was
released posthumously in May 1998. Given the raw
and somewhat unfinished nature of the songs, the
collection that was released was called Sketches
    for My Sweetheart the Drunk.

The album's original sessions were produced by
Television frontman Tom Verlaine. Despite its
unfinished state, the album received many positive
reviews. After the audiophile releases of Grace ,
The Grace EP´s and Mystery White Boy, this
release on Music on Vinyl completes the series of
    available Jeff Buckley studio material.
This 3LP audiophile set is housed in a firm
    5mm sleeve.

    You & I

Jeff Buckley's first recording sessions in 1993 in NYC were largely an informal exercise to acclimate the 27-year-old with a recording studio. Recently discovered in the Sony Music archives during the research for the 20th anniversary edition of Buckley's Grace album, the performances on You And I are a revelation, an intimate portrait of the artist performing a variety of cover songs and original music expressing a range of emotion channeled through his singular sensibility.

These intimate, raw and spirited sessions mark Buckley's first time recording versions of electric cover songs such as Bob Dylan's "Just Like A Woman," Sly & The Family Stone's "Everyday People," and Led Zeppelin's "Night Flight" and a previously unissued track, "Dream of You And I."

Long rumored to exist, as the "Addabbo sessions", but previously unheard outside the studio, these seminal recordings are a fan's Holy Grail, a rare opportunity to hear Jeff Buckley in peak form, developing his artistry through a series of spellbinding solo performances, each one captured in pristine sonic detail.

Any time I take a cover and wear it on my sleeve, it's because it had something to do with my life and still marks a time in my life when I needed that song more than anything ever. -- Jeff Buckley, 1994

In the space of one studio album, and a number of recorded live performances, Jeff Buckley managed to carve out a global cult following. With so little studio output available, fans of Jeff Buckley have inevitably been drawn back time and time again to the masterpiece that is Grace, becoming familiar with every detail of every song.

The five discs that make up The Grace EPs are a collection of live performances and a few studio versions from songs that appeared on Buckley's seminal debut album. A few b-sides are also included. Indeed two of these (Peyote Radio Theatre and So Real) were promotional-only releases that weren't commercially available. The others were rare imports: Last Goodbye came out in Japan, Live From the Bataclan in France, and The Grace EP in Australia.

Jeff Buckley toured the globe extensively, performing countless shows in support of his music.
The Grace EPs capture some of the majesty of his stage presence. So what of the music contained here? First of all this is no skimpy collection - adding up to more than two hours even though there are just three to five songs on each disc. The perfect supplement to the Grace album, it contains live versions (sometimes more than one) of five songs from that record, as well as a few edit versions, a Nag Champa Mix of Dream Brother, and a 13- minute live 'Chocolate Version' of Mojo Pin.

Perhaps more interesting to collectors will be a few cover tunes not on Grace: a whopping 12-minute version of Van Morrison's The Way Young Lovers Do, a medley of Je N'En Connais Pas la Fin/Hymne A l'Amour, Hank Williams's Lost Highway, and a 14-minute take on Alex Chilton's Kanga-Roo. And there is, finally, a bonus track added to the The Grace EP (the only song in the package not on the original EPs), Tongue, a spooky ambient 11-minute studio instrumental.

If you're a devoted Buckley-phile, this set is for you. It's beautifully put together, with crisp sound quality in the live performances, and captures Buckley's tremendous flair for stage improvisation.

    Marry Me

St. Vincent is the moniker of singer/multi-instrumentalist/composer Annie Clark and this is her debut full-length. She's opened for such diverse acts as Television, Jose Gonzalez, and Sufjan Stevens, and she's an inventive and versatile guitarist who has also performed with avant-garde composer Glenn Branca. On this record, she writes cinematic pop epics that feel at times like Paris in the 20s before all the fun ended. Or, conversely, an orchestra of pure modernity - a new American music, informed by jazz, gospel blues, Southern folk music, and classical composition but, in the end, an animal original unto itself. She's been compared to everyone from Bjork to Kate Bush to Jeff Buckley, and her beautiful voice melds perfectly with her intricate guitar work.

Mystery White Boy is a live collection, featuring cuts culled from Jeff Buckley's 1995-1996 world tours. The set captures an intensity that transcend Buckley's studio work and his backing band (Michael Tighe, guitar/Mick Grondahl,bass/and Matt Johnson, drums) provides the perfect complement to the passionate singer/songwriter's forceful singing on such tracks as the rocking opener Dream Brothers, the compelling What Will You Say, the cabaret-esque version of Lilac Wine and a heavy psychedelic leaning version of Last Goodbye. Mystery White Boy captures a one of a kind performer in his purest form, live. Imported double 180g audiophile vinyl in gatefold sleeve.

It's no surprise that Michigan's BORNS moved to L.A. before recording Dopamine-it's pure Southern California in a bottle. In the studio, Garrett Borns' sunkissed falsetto and intricately penned confessionals are given a glitzy bump. "Electric Love" explodes with a crunchy T. Rex-style riff before it takes a turn for sweet, breathy indie pop. On "The Emotion", BORNS channels Jeff Buckley and Bjôrk in equal measure over a shimmering wash of guitars. But what threads these lilting gems and electro-pop heaters together is that most narcotising of emotions-love is the drug he's thinking of.

A Rush Of Blood To The Head

Ranked 473/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

A Rush of Blood to the Head is a soulful, exhilarating journey, moving from the cathartic rock of Politik to the hushed tones of Green Eyes without once breaking its mesmerizing momentum. Singer Chris Martin takes his voice on soaring flights, reaching places only Jeff Buckley previously dared to go. And the music is nearly flawless, as heartfelt and emotionally liberated as you can get.

Though technically residing in Nashville, TN, rising singer/songwriter Daniel James aka Canon Blue has spent the majority of the past three years touring the world with Efterklang while simultaneously writing and recording Rumspringa in their Copenhagen studio. He then headed to Iceland to record orchestral arrangements with renowned string quartet Amiina. The result is a breathtakingly gorgeous mix of orchestral pop and neoclassical minimalism that blends the soulful intimacy of Jeff Buckley and the playful whimsy of Sufjan Stevens with the stately meditation of Steve Reich and Philip Glass.

The release of this double LP coincides with a host of summer tour dates. ...pure folk-flavored whimsy, reminiscent of Tim Buckley and 1970's cosmic pinup Marc Bolan - Blender. ...there's something about Banhart's muse that defies words and logic, something to these songs that hints at a deeper connection to the cosmos than most of us share. PARTYBABY is the LA based 4 piece fronted by Jamie Reed and Noah Gersh, who, despite being only in their mid-20s, are both veterans of the modern rock scene (Gersh with Portugal. The Man and Reed with 30 Seconds to Mars). Their music can perhaps best be described as loud, hook-heavy rock in the spirit of Nirvana, Cheap Trick, Weezer, "Ziggy"-era Bowie, The Stooges, Smashing Pumpkins and The Cars. Their self-produced debut album, "The Golden Age of Bullshit," is mixed by Andy Wallace (Nirvana, The Cult, Run-DMC, Jeff Buckley).

Nina Simone is hands down one of the best Blues singers of the 20th century and only artists the likes of Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith had the power to lay a soul bare like she could! This is no better exemplified than on Pastel Blues' stripped-down album opener Be My Husband, which was later covered famously by Jeff Buckley. Also featured on this beloved 1965 Philips Records release are dazzling interpretations of songs directly related to the aforementioned songstresses including Nobody Knows When You're Down And Out, originally sung by Smith and Holiday's signature song Strange Fruit, not to mention the traditional spiritual Sinnerman, which remains one of Simone's most popular recordings. At long last, Pastel Blues is back on vinyl courtesy of this Music On Vinyl 180g audiophile reissue!

This second full-length features contributions from both Antony's peers (Rufus Wainwright, Devendra Banhart) and heroes (Lou Reed, Boy George). Their involvement reflects both their admiration for Antony and his unique place in the contemporary arts community. Reed asked Antony to perform as part of the small ensemble on Reed's American and European tours, and he gave Antony a solo turn on the Velvet Underground classic Candy Says, an homage to another one of Antony's inspirations, Andy Warhol. In fact, the image adorning the cover of this album is Peter Hujar's striking 1974 photo, Candy Darling On Her Deathbed. Like some unsettling ghost relative of Jeff Buckley and Billie Holiday singing for all the fallen, this is tough, honest, uncompromising beauty and the next great voice in music - Mojo. If a great voice is often said to be an instrument, Antony's is a near orchestra, carrying extremes of emotion, great waves of suffering, tragedy, redemption, and joy - Metro. Anna Calvi is to release a 5 track covers EP entitled 'Strange Weather.' Produced by Thomas Bartlett
(The National, Antony and the Johnsons, Sam Amidon) and recorded in New York, the EP features
covers of tracks by FKA twigs, Connan Mockasin, Suicide, David Bowie as well as a stunning
collaboration with David Byrne on the title track, a cover of Keren Ann's 'Strange Weather'.

The cover of Suicide's Ghost Rider was recorded with drummer Matt Johnson (Jeff Buckley), and Nico
Muhly contributes string arrangements to the EP opener, a deconstructed organic reworking of FKA
    twigs' 'Papi Pacify.'

David Byrne said the following on working with Anna:

'I'm a big fan of Anna's two records... and I caught her tour after her first record at Bowery Ballroom
here in NY. 'Epic' I think is the word that is often used. So when Thomas Bartlett said he was going to
be in the studio producing an EP of Anna doing covers I immediately agreed to join in. I was invited
to suggest songs and I loved the last Keren Ann record and I thought Strange Weather had a haunting
quality that might suit Anna.... so we did that, and Anna then suggested I join in on the Connan
    Mockasin track she'd done too.'

    Birthdays

In this frantic Twitterworld, where all the genres of music are either mating with other genres, feeding on the past or searching for the next trending wave, Keaton Henson personifies the moment when time stops still. It's the almost shocking sound of one man and his gently stoked electric guitar, which flicks like the embers of a fire, as the singer's voice glows in the reflected light, safe in his panic room.

Crippled by anxiety since childhood, to the point that he rarely goes out or plays live, the wondrously bearded Keaton is the archetypal tortured recluse who channels his emotions not into shopping or clubbing but his art: he's a skilled illustrator too, of bare-boned drawings that are as starkly delineated as his guitar-playing.

Birthdays follows 2012's cult debut album Dear..., and for its first half, Henson avoids slipping into post-dubstep, chillwave or hiring Skrillex in order to fit in.
But there is change underfoot. Dear featured one drum track, so the subtle beat behind The Best Today is no biggie. But half way through the following Don't Swim, it's like an ember has landed in your lap. The song's sudden electrical charge, which persists through the following, thunderous Kronos, is the sound of Henson wrenched from his comfort zone. Birthdays' second track suggests he's even reached Paris.

In fact, the whole album was recorded in California by American producer Joe Chiccarelli (The Shins, The Strokes). And various guests, including Jesca Hoop on ghostly backing vocals, have chipped in. Birthdays' second half takes Heaton closer to Jeff Buckley's turf: the unforced vibrato, the goosepimply effect and romantic hunger. But it's a subtle shift, and the instrumentation only partially reconfigures the secluded spell.

Beekeeper's occasional bouts of rock doesn't drown out the soft peals of banjo, while the swell of French horns, martial drum and Henson's fluttering voice in Sweetheart, What Have You Done to Us sounds like he's still in his bedroom. Up there, warmed by the fire, he's cloistered away from Twitter and all the other evils of this parish. There's no better way to shut out the din than by putting this record on.

    -Martin Aston

Don't Act Like You Don't Care

Before the success of his group Here We Go Magic, Luke Temple worked full-time as a plasterer. At nights after work, he spent his hours crafting what would become Here We Go Magic's self-titled debut. During the days he wrote a completely different set of songs in his head. The resulting record Don't Act Like You Don't Care shines with clarity and daylight, in contrast to Here We Go Magic's hazy aquatic debut.

After recording two critically acclaimed solo records for Mill Pond (2005, 2007) Temple's work still hadn't garnered much attention from the record-buying public. Frustrated, but not defeated, he focused his creative energy into the writing of two amazing, but completely different records. Initially referred to as 'The Country Record,' Don't Act Like You Don't Care was shelved due to the success of Here We Go Magic's self-titled debut. Now, three years later, we're finally able to offer this incredible collection of folk-pop songs.

Unlike the Here We Go Magic record, Don't Act Like You Don't Care focuses on Temple's songwriting and evocative tenor. From heartbreaking ballads like So Long, So Long and Ballad for Dick George to jaunty pop gems like Ophelia and In The Open you'll become fast friends with these songs that continue to satisfy after hundreds of listens.

Inspired by Rudy Van Gelder's early Blue Note recordings, Temple and friends recorded the songs in two 4-hour sessions using just three microphones and a 4-track recorder. Temple is fortunate to have some amazingly talented friends with Eliot Krimsky (Glass Ghost) on synths, Tyler Wood on piano, Parker Kindred (Antony and the Johnsons, Jeff Buckley) on drums, Michael Bloch (Here We Go Magic) on guitar and Adam Chilenski on bass.

Buckley had a voice like an oversexed angel, and the songs on Grace shimmer and twist and ripple. On the fierce rocker Eternal Life, he upends Led Zeppelin's take on the blues, even as he honors it: Instead of a hellhound on his trail, Buckley, who drowned in 1997, sings about immortality bearing down on him. - Rolling Stone

During his famed early gigs at the New York club Sin-É, Buckley used to break hearts with his version of this Cohen prayer. Buckley called it a homage to 'the hallelujah of the orgasm' and had misgivings about his sensuous rendition: 'I hope Leonard doesn't hear it.' On his posthumous live album Mystery White Boy, Buckley turns 'Hallelujah' into a medley with the Smiths' 'I Know It's Over.' - Rolling Stone

Jeff Buckley's Grace is a masterpiece. The critically acclaimed breakthrough is filled with sweeping choruses, bombastic arrangements, searching lyrics, and above all, the richly textured voice of Buckley himself.

10 Years Solo Live (Box Set) (Out Of Stock)

Nonesuch Records releases Brad Mehldau's 10 Years Solo Live eight-LP vinyl box set October 16, 2015. The set is culled from 19 live recordings made over a decade of the pianist's European solo concerts and is divided into four thematic subsets of four sides each: Dark/Light, The Concert, Intermezzo/RÜckblick, and E Minor/E Major. 10 Years Solo Live will be released digitally and on CD the following month.

As Mehldau explains in his liner note for the album, Although it totals around 300 minutes, the order of songs is not arbitrary, and I have tried to tell a story from beginning to end in the way I've sequenced it. He continues, There is a theme and character given to each four-side set.

Of the Dark/Light theme, he says, In concerts, I find that I contrast dark and light emotional energies and highlight the way they depend on each other. Sides 1-4 focus on this dichotomy in pairs, beginning with the dark energy of Jeff Buckley's 'Dream Brother,' which is followed by the grace of Lennon/McCartney's 'Blackbird.' He further says, Although the songs on Sides 5-8 (The Concert) come from different concerts, on this set, I arranged them in a sequence similar to that I would perform in a single concert in 2010-11, he continues.

The third set could be thought of as Intermezzo and RÜckblick-like in character. I'm thinking of the penultimate movement of Brahms's Third Piano Sonata with that title. RÜckblick means a look backward, perhaps a reappraisal. Brahms's Intermezzo movement was a look back at what had taken place in his Sonata before moving to the final movement. Here, the listener is invited to look back to music that was recorded 10 or more years ago, in 2004 and 2005. Mehldau explains that his approach to the sequence of the fourth set is to focus on the rub between the keys of E minor and E major. I return to the theme of dark and light from the first set, now allowing the listener to focus on how 'dark' and 'light' might manifest in tonality.

Mehldau has performed around the world at a steady pace for 25 years, with his trio, with other collaborators, and as a solo pianist, building a large and loyal audience. It is actually strange, this whole business of performance. It is a direct, intense kind of empathy with a group of total strangers that lasts around 90 minutes. And then, it's over, and everyone goes home. I go back to a hotel room and go to bed, the pianist says in his10 Years Solo Livenote. Something happened, but what was most vital about it can't really be put in words. It is sweet, kind of bittersweet. In any case, it is not enough to say that the different audiences were important for the creation of this music. They were absolutely necessary; they were pivotal. Without those audiences, this music would not exist in the way it does.
