Jefferson Airplane's 1967 Psychedelic Breakthrough First Record to Put Countercultural San Francisco Scene on Mainstream Music Map: Includes Top 10 Hits Someone to Love and White Rabbit

Acid-Rock Experimentalism and Folk-Based Arrangements Yield Mysteriousness, Darkness, and Beauty: Grace Slick's Clarion-Call Singing Matches Virtuosic Playing of Band Members and Guest Jerry Garcia

They were the best of times for Jefferson Airplane, and the good vibes are heard throughout the band's iconic Surrealistic Pillow. The group's first album with vocalist Grace Slick and drummer Spencer Dryden, the 1967 effort bowed as the first psychedelic-rock breakout from the potent San Francisco scene, climbing to #3 and boasting two Top 10 singles. By bringing the then-unpolluted counterculture to the attention of the mainstream, the effort ranked by Rolling Stone #146 on its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time eradicated boundaries and opened up creative vistas for a parade of likeminded artists that followed. Mobile Fidelity's analog reissue honors this legacy with an edition that presents the groundbreaking music with incredible realism.

Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's 180g 45RPM mono 2LP set grants Surrealistic Pillow audiophile-grade sound remarkable for its sense of balance, clarity, and tonality. While fans have always preferred the original mono version of the LP, it went out of print soon after its release, causing prices to soar.

Offering wider, deeper grooves for better information retrieval and superior pacing, this deluxe set gives listeners the chance to enjoy Jefferson Airplane's blockbuster set in faithful-to-the-original mono without having to pay a premium. Along with immersive detail and dynamics, the level of instrumental and vocal separation allows the sensory-altering songs' complexities to emerge with full-bloom color and renewed perspective. Mobile Fidelity puts the surrealism back into Surrealistic Pillow.

Jefferson Airplane's sixth album Volunteers was released in 1969, a mere two years since their monumental psychedelic hippie rock album Surrealistic Pillow. A politically charged album, Volunteers mainly dealt with the injustice of the Vietnam war.

Besides its lyrical content causing controversy, the album was ahead of its time on a technological level as well. At the time, Volunteers was one of the first albums to be recorded on a state-of-the-art sixteen track tape recorder, a picture of which can be seen on the backside of the album sleeve.

Musical collaborators include Stephen Stills and David Crosby. Volunteers is a crucial Jefferson record that ranks among the top albums of this seminal San Francisco psychedelic rock group.

    The Worst Of Jefferson Airplane

The '60s were a turbulent time in America as its disenfranchised youth looked to their musical heroes for many of its compelling questions. The 15 song collection represents the finest tracks from their amazing first six albums including tracks and chart hit singles from the likes of Surrealistic Pillow, Crown Of Creation and After Bathing At Baxters.

Aside from the songs mentioned above, you also get the classic rockers Crown Of Creation, Me & You & Pooneil and We Can Be Together, as well as more introspective classics like Good Shepherd from the Volunteers album and Its No Secret from their very first album Jefferson Airplane Takes Off.

    Volunteers

Ranked 370/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

In their late-60s heyday, Jefferson Airplane embodied the eras revolutionary attitude and experimental spirit like no other rock act. Their unique combination of adventurous musicianship, visionary lyrics and personal charisma defined San Francisco psychedelia and established the band as quintessential Aquarian-age messengers.

1969s Volunteers coincided with Jefferson Airplanes performance at the Woodstock festival and is one of the groups most popular albums. Its also one of their most explicitly political efforts, calling for revolutionary action and counter-cultural unity on such memorable anthems as We Can Be Together, Wooden Ships, Eskimo Blue Day and the albums iconic title track, with the band members formidable musicianship augmented by guest players Jerry Garcia and Nicky Hopkins. Volunteers uncompromising stance originally made the album a source of controversy, but today its rightfully recognized as a rock landmark.

As part of Sundazed's ongoing mission to present classic LPs in all their original sonic and visual glory, the first generation stereo masters were sourced and the cover art was meticulously reproduced.

Jefferson Airplane Volunteers on Numbered Limited Edition 180g 45RPM 2LP from Mobile Fidelity

Seminal 1969 Album Steeped in Revolution, Vitality, Protest: The Aural Equivalent of a Demonstration March, Jefferson Airplane's Uncompromising Volunteers Rooted in Belief Music Can Change World

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes: Wider, Deeper Grooves on 180g 45RPM 2LP Set Yield Superior Transparency, Rich Nuances, and Engaging Dynamics on Set Ranked #370 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time

Defiant, Assured, Cohesive Songs Filled With Driving Psychedelia, Rustic Country, and Crunchy Acid-Rock: Guest Musicians Include Jerry Garcia, Stephen Stills, and David Crosby

Awash in controversy and loaded with revolutionary protest, Jefferson Airplane's Volunteers stands as the last album made by the group's classic lineup and brings insurgent closure to the peace-and-love era. The potent 1969 record confronts war, politics, greed, and environmental ruin in head-on fashion matched by few peers. Steeped in the belief people and music could transform the world, it steers the band in community-minded and county-rock directions, and features charged playing by guest luminaries such as Jerry Garcia, Stephen Stills, David Crosby, and Nicky Hopkins. Volunteers also benefits from being one of the first 16-track recordings. And now, the historic set can be heard in the fidelity the artists and producers intended.

Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's 180g 45RPM 2LP set of Volunteers teems with soul-affirming energy, dynamics, immediacy, and standout textures. The wider and deeper grooves translate into finer pacing, enhanced information retrieval, and superior transparency. Soundstages stretch far and extend back, with instrumental separation giving all of the musicians their own place in the mix. As a result, subtle albeit important details - Hopkins' rollicking piano, guitarist Norma Kaukonen's biting tones, Garcia's deft pedal-steel work - emerge in three-dimensional fashion amidst a musical canvas that manages to be both edgy and produced, raw and revealing. Jefferson Airplane has never sounded more vital.

Much had changed in America - and within Jefferson Airplane - in just the two short years since the release of the San Francisco collective's breakthrough smash Surrealistic Pillow. The countercultural movement had darkened, government involvement in Vietnam escalated, and regard for human rights fallen. Retreating from the excessive experimentalism that graced its prior two LPs, the Airplane responded to the social circumstances with defiant, assured, and cohesive songs shot through with driving psychedelia, crunchy acid-rock, and rustic country. From start to finish, it's the aural equivalent of a demonstration march.

Having drawn attention for the inclusion of profanities in multiple tunes, the Top 20 LP also ran up against the nonprofit Volunteers of America after the sextet wanted to title the record Volunteers of Amerika in order to express further dissatisfaction with the country. While Grace Slick and Co. gave into the charity's desires to switch the name, there's nothing compromising about Volunteers. Kaukonen's leads cut searing swaths through urgent fare like Eskimo Blue Day and anthemic We Can Be Together, which boldly speaks out against convention and in favor of chaos and anarchy.

Indeed, in organizing a pseudo summit of many of the counterculture's leading musical figures to participate on Volunteers, the Airplane treats the album as an orchestrated stance against the establishment. Stills and Crosby assist in rocking the boat on a turbulent cover of Wooden Ships lined with Slick and Marty Balin's overlapping lead vocals. Hopkins gooses the call-to-arms title track with frisky boogie-woogie lines. Garcia lends The Farm a suitable rustic vibe, and on his final appearance with the Airplane, drummer Spencer Dryden helms the pastoral sing-a-long A Song for All Seasons.

Ranked #370 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, Volunteers remains a cultural and musical touchstone.

    American Hustle Soundtrack

Like Goodfellas and Boogie Nights before it, American Hustle's music celebrates the epic feel of '70s pop, rock, and disco and uses it to give its story extra heft. David O. Russell's tale of con men, Feds, and the mob has a lighter touch than either of those two movies, however, and this is reflected in the soundtrack's song choices. More than a few of these tracks are by Electric Light Orchestra as well as Jeff Lynne on his own, and the whimsical yet driving sound of 10538 Orchestra, Long Black Road, and Stream of Stars lends a tongue-in-cheek tone supported by Tom Jones' Delilah and Chris Stills' Live to Live. The album touches on some of the decade's definitive songs (Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Wings' Live and Let Die, Donna Summer's I Feel Love) but never sounds like a prepackaged hits-of-the-'70s collection, due in large part to unique choices like Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes' gritty version of Don't Leave Me This Way and Mayssa Karaa's otherworldly Arabic interpretation of Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit, which is so striking that it's one of the finest songs on an album packed with big names. A nuanced and playful soundtrack, American Hustle works well as a companion piece to the movie that spawned it and on its own.

After Bathing at Baxter's is the third album by the San Francisco rock band Jefferson Airplane. The Jefferson Airplane began 1967 with Surrealistic Pillow and closed it with After Bathing at Baxter's, and what a difference ten months made.

The album was among the purest of Rock's psychedelic albums, it was also a lot more daring. The album showed a band in a state of ferment as singer/guitarist Mary Balin largely surrendered much of his creative input in the band he'd founded, and let Paul Kantner and Grace Slick dominate the songwriting and singing on all but one cut (Young Girl Sunday Blues).

The album peaked at number 17 in The Billboard 200 in 1968. In 1967, the single Ballad Of You & Me & Pooneil was placed 42 in The Billboard Hot 100.

    Pressed At R.T.I.

1967 was an amazing year for rock music, and San Francisco was the place to be for legendary classic rock bands like Jefferson Airplane. After their groundbreaking Takes Off and Surrealistic Pillow LPs (both on Friday Music), Jefferson Airplane continued their gold and platinum magic and delivered the monumental classic After Bathing At Baxter's.

Featuring the brilliant musicianship of Paul Kantner, Grace Slick, Marty Balin, Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady and Spencer Dryden, this new LP would become one of their most important albums, as well as further developing the Airplane into the superstar act they are to this day. With a groundswell of support from the hip record buying public to major airplay at both underground FM and pop radio stations, the LP was received incredibly well. Featuring stellar radio and fan favorites like The Ballad Of You & Me & Pooneil, Won't You Try/ Saturday Afternoon, and several other tunes which would go on to become rock music anthems for the turbulent 60's. Even more stellar album tracks like Martha and Watch Her Ride soon became standard Airplane classics in the years to follow. "Jam bands" began with groups like Jefferson Airplane. Therefore it's no surprise to hear the wonderful workouts by dual guitarists Jorma Kaukonen and Paul Kantner along with Grace Slick and Marty Balin's power vocals plus the bass of Jack Casady and Spencer Drydens' drum work on this masterwork.

Friday Music is honored to present another exciting installment in our Jefferson Airplane 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series with their masterpiece After Bathing At Baxter's LP. Their third RCA album showcases a very hip band that has stood the test of time now for over five decades. Mastered impeccably by Joe Reagoso (Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna/ Grateful Dead), this first time audiophile stereophonic vinyl release will become one of the more important albums in your classic rock collection.

Jefferson Airplane Takes Off is the debut album of San Francisco Rock band Jefferson Airplane, released in August 1966. The personnel differs from the later classic lineup and the music is more Folk-Rock than the harder psychedelic sound for which the band later became famous.

Signe Toly Anderson was the female vocalist and Skip Spence played drums. Both left the group shortly after the album's release and were replaced by Grace Slick and Spencer Dryden, respectively.

    Red Octopus

Mastered by Joe Reagoso and Kevin Gray at RTI from the Original RCA/Grunt Records Tapes

When Jefferson Airplane morphed successfully into Jefferson Starship in the mid-'70s, their musicianship, and recorded output was enthusiastically received and was a very important career move in the continuing story of these Bay Area superstars.

Red Octopus surely helped award them fame even further as this amazing Jefferson Starship LP went to #1 and soon became one of the many platinum plus ventures for this much loved and respected band. Their new formula worked tremendously as this watershed release featured a plethora of chart topping hits like Miracles, Play On Love, Fast Buck Freddie and There Will Be Love.

The band was rich with rock and roll history, consisting of Airplane mainstays Paul Kantner, Grace Slick, Marty Balin, plus later Airplane alumnus David Freiberg (Quicksilver), Papa John Creach, and Johnny Barbata (CSN+Y, Turtles), as well as new additions Craig Chaquico and Pete Sears. Jefferson Starship truly delivered the goods with Red Octopus as this album went on to quickly become a classic rock masterpiece!

Friday Music is no stranger to releasing some of the greatest music ever recorded by Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, Starship and Hot Tuna, so it is with much honor they have announced the release of the masterwork Red Octopus on 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl. This limited edition masterpiece has been impeccably mastered by Joe Reagoso and Kevin Gray at RTI from the original RCA/ Grunt Records tapes.

In honor of their continuing 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl series on the Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship franchise, Friday Music is also issuing this wonderful album with a very limited gatefold cover, which includes the original artwork elements, plus the lyrics and photos as you remember them from the original 1975 release. In 1969 Jefferson Airplane members Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady formed Hot Tuna. Begun as an acoustic spinoff of the Jefferson Airplane, the American blues rock band eventually became the full-time focus of founding members Casady and Kaukonen, emerging as a popular touring act of the 70s.

The album Pair a Dice Found was originally released in 1990 and was Hot Tuna's first new album release in more than a decade.

The song Eve of Destruction, a protest song originally written by P. F. Sloan in mid-1964, was released as a single.

When you listen to this album, you just don't get 'peace and love man'... Jack Casady

1968 was an amazing year for rock music, and San Francisco was the place to be for legendary classic rock bands like Jefferson Airplane.

After stunning success with three gold and platinum Lps under their belts, the classic quintet of Paul Kantner, Marty Balin, Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady, Grace Slick and Spencer Dryden delivered their masterwork Crown Of Creation. The Lp would become one of the most important albums of their long career featuring one of the most artistic and sobering covers of our time.

With a groundswell of support from the hip record buying public to major airplay at both underground FM and pop radio stations, the Lp was received incredibly well. Featuring two hit singles with Crown Of Creation and Greasy Heart, both tunes would go on to become rock music and social anthems for the turbulent 60's. Even more stellar album tracks like If You Feel, Lather and Triad (written with David Crosby) would all become standard Airplane classics in the years to follow.

"Jam bands" began with groups like Jefferson Airplane. Therefore it's no surprise to hear the wonderful workouts by dual guitarists Jorma Kaukonen and Paul Kantner along with Grace Slick and Marty Balin's power vocals plus the bass of Jack Casady and Spencer Drydens' drum work on this watershed release.

Friday Music is honored to present another exciting installment in our Jefferson Airplane 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series with their masterpiece Crown Of Creation Lp. Their fourth RCA album showcases a very hip band that has stood the test of time now for over five decades.

Mastered impeccably by Joe Reagoso (Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna/Grateful Dead), this first time audiophile vinyl release will become one of the more important albums in your classic rock collection. To enhance your Airplane listening pleasure, the Lp will be pressed for a short time on TRANSLUCENT ORANGE MARBLE vinyl at RTI, featuring new liner notes from Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady in a first time gatefold cover, as well as including the rare 12 x 24 poster of Brumus and photo insert, which truly make this an even more rewarding event for the fans.

    St. Vincent Soundtrack + Score

    180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl

    Including 2 Inserts

2 LP Set Contains The Original Score By Theodore Shapiro + The Soundtrack Featuring Tweedy, Bob Dylan, The National And Jefferson Airplane

First Pressing Of 1000 Numbered Copies On Blue Marbled Vinyl

The Soundtrack to the comedy drama St. Vincent (starring Academy Award® nominees Bill Murray, Melissa McCarthy and Naomi Watts), is an irresistible compilation of evergreens and newer hits - including songs from Bob Dylan, The National, and Jefferson Airplane.

This At The Movies release is a very interesting package: next to presenting the song soundtrack, we've also included the Original Score by Theodore Shapiro on a second disc. Each copy of the first pressing is individually numbered and pressed on blue marbled vinyl.

The soundtrack album includes classics from the 1960s and 1970s, such as Bob Dylan's "Shelter From The Storm" from the 1975 album Blood On The Tracks. Tweedy provides two songs: the funky "Everybody Hides" and the laid-back "Why, Why, Why". In between comes a contrasting classic, the straight-hitting vocals of Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody To Love". This was the band's first and biggest hit, a single from the album Surrealistic Pillow in 1967.

    Surrealistic Pillow (Pre-Order)

Ranked 146/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Surrealistic Pillow, as the name implies, is one soft ridden, slightly mad piece of psychedelic San Francisco folk-rock. From its percussive intro of She Has Funny Cars to the thumping mystique of Plastic Fantastic Lover, this album's one heaven of a trip!

Jefferson Airplane truly hit the mark with this seminal album from 1967. Highlights that should not be overlooked are Somebody To Love, White Rabbit and Today.

    Long Years In Space

Marinated in influences as mind-splintering as the mushroom folk/rock blast of the Jefferson Airplane as well as the feel-good pristine pop of the Turtles, the Neighb'rhood Childr'n's one album trades hands these days for sums usually mentioned in ransom notes. We've added a dozen unreleased brownies, spun gold from the original session tapes, and Prof. Jud has squeezed the band's legend from vocalist Dyan Hoffman and guitarist Ric Bolz in this latest addition to the Dazed's acclaimed and essential Quakes From The Eureka State series.

    The Thousandfold Epicentre (Awaiting Repress)

The Dutch occult duo The Devil's Blood, consisting of chief songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Selim Lemouchi along with his sister, vocalist F, return with The Thousandfold Epicentre, an atmospheric and theatrical 11-track black arts revival that evokes the retro sounds of 60s psychedelia and 70s hard/progressive rock. The duo even manages to channel the disparate sounds of forebearers like Jefferson Airplane and Hawkwind on the soaring tracks On the Wings of Gloria, Cruel Lover, The Madness of Serpents and the profound Feverdance, all with an ethereal and hypnotic style that is delightfully their own. The set was produced with the help of Pieter Kloos at Void Studios (Eindhoven, The Netherlands). Double vinyl pressing in gatefold sleeve courtesy of Metal Blade Records.

    Quah

    Numbered Yellow Vinyl

Produced by Jack Casady, Quah was recorded shortly after the breakup of Jefferson Airplane in 1972 and released two years later. Now painstakingly remastered from the original analog tapes by expert Bay-area engineer Jeffrey Norman, this hard-to-find folk-blues classic sounds better than ever. Kaukonen's brilliant finger-picking guitarwork shines through like never before on old favorites like "Genesis" and "Hamar Promenade."

Much like the album's distinctive sound, Quah 's cover art is instantly recognizable. That's why, for this very special anniversary release, we turned to the prestigious Stoughton Printing Company for the album's jacket. Their "Old Style" Tip-On Gatefold Single-Pocket Jacket™ is rich in style and detail, while the combination of a matte finish with high gloss spot UV coating allows the album's beautiful "Flying Angel" painting (by Kaukonen's then-wife Margareta) to leap off the cover like never before.

    4 Exclusive Bonus Tracks!

Formed in 1967 by former Motions guitarist Robbie van Leeuwen, Shocking Blue was joined by Cor van der Beek (drums), Klaasje van der Wal (bass) and Mariska Veres as lead vocalist. In 1969 and 1970, the group set the airwaves crackling and enjoyed a worldwide chart success with ''Venus'' (which incorporated the help of studio musician Cees Schrama of Casey & The Pressure Group [MOVLP1132]), followed by several other hit singles.

In 1972, they released their 6th album Attila, a solid Pop album written entirely by Van Leeuwen, anchored by Marika's powerful vocals. Her incredible range and control is at times compared with Jefferson Airplane's singer Grace Slick. Noteworthy tracks on Attila are ''Rock In The Sea'', album opener ''Rattler'' and the moody ''Wait''. This album is denitely worth picking up for a comprehensive view on Holland's biggest export product's early '70s output.
