    Optica

Shout Out Louds took their time with these songs, recording for about 1.5 years in a small Stockholm studio and producing themselves for the first time with help from Johannes Berglund. A theme emerged and Optica was born, an album celebrating color and light from a band confident in its sound.

Shout Out Louds comment: "In our eagerness to please no one but ourselves this time around, we decided to take on the challenge of producing our own music for the first time ever. Our close friend and sound aficionado of choice Johannes Berglund and his studio in Stockholm presented us with an ideal package for the endeavor. A secluded work space close to home, but off the earth's surface, a more than generous timeline, and the patient and brilliant sixth member we needed to get through the whole thing safely. Together we made up a downstairs world of explosive colors, big, warm sounds and a very, very uninhibited work process. We never worried about following a clear path, trusting that the conscious decision not to worry would be enough to lead us right, and that right doesn't necessarily have to mean rational or even reasonable We all set prestige and skillfulness aside in favor of experimentation and sheer gusto. That will probably come across live too. I don't think we've ever been this excited to take an album on tour."

    1000 Unit Limited Edition Vinyl

An intrepid musical enigma. - BBC

Directed by Josh C. Waller and starring Rachel Nichols, Cory Monteith
and Mike Vogel, McCanick tells the story of a narcotics detective on
the hunt for a seemingly harmless young criminal who know the truth
about the cop's past. The film takes place over the course of 24 hours.

The music is composed by acclaimed Icelandic
composer Jóhann Jóhannsson who recently scored Denis
Villeneuve's Prisoners. The score is beautiful, elegant and haunting
and does not fit the traditional definition of film music. Jóhann
Jóhannsson belongs to this generation of modern composers such as
Max Richter, Clint Mansell, and Cliff Martinez who combine classical
orchestration with electronic music. Famous for his melancholic solo
albums, Jóhann Jóhannsson has created with McManick a score that
stands on its own and plays out as a full on artist record
complementing an already rich and beautiful repertoire.

    Arrival Soundtrack (Awaiting Repress)

Directed by Denis Villeneuve, Arrival stars Amy Adams as Louise Banks, an expert linguist hired by the government to communicate with alien intelligence after a fleet of spacecraft ominously appears at sites around the globe. Following his Oscar-nominated score for Villeneuve's Sicario, Jóhann Jóhannsson composed and produced this unique sci-fi film's soundtrack, praised by TIME Magazine for being "so integral to the images that it may as well be their heartbeat."

    First Ever Vinyl Pressing

    Deluxe Gatefold Sleeve

    2x Clear LP

    Two Bonus Tracks

Never before pressed on vinyl, IBM 1401, A User's Manual, is one of Jóhann Jóhannsson's most-loved works. Originally released in 2006, the decade since its release has seen Jóhann establish himself as one of the most important composers in the world, notably scoring movies such as Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, Sicario and The Theory of Everything. Johann's scores have been nominated for two Academy Awards®, two Golden Globes®, a Grammy® and three BAFTA® awards. He was awarded the Golden Globe® for Best Original Score for The Theory Of Everything.

Inspired by the work his father did in the sixties when chief maintenance engineer of one of Iceland's first computers, Jóhann originally wrote IBM 1401, A User's Manual to accompany a dance piece by long-standing collaborator and friend, Erna Ómarsdóttir. For the album release, he rewrote the piece for a sixty-piece string orchestra, with a new final movement (built around a poem by Dorothy Parker) and incorporating both electronics and reel-to-reel recordings made by his father and friends in 1971 of the IBM 1401 mainframe computer singing the hymn Ísland Ögrum Skorið by Sigvaldi Kaldalóns as it was being decommissioned.

The first ever pressing of IBM 1401, A User's Manual comes in a deluxe gatefold sleeve, reworked by Chris Bigg (v23) from his original design. Pressed on clear vinyl, two live tracks recorded with the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra have also been added.

    The Scriptures

The Scriptures is Christian Death's fifth album and is seen as an essay on comparative world religions. The liner notes state that the work is a translation of world beliefs by Valor. The album, like Atrocities, is split into two acts, though later reissues would omit these subtitles. The completion of recording on The Scriptures would see David Glass leave the group and like previous members Barry Galvin and Johann Schumann, would go on to play in Mephisto Walz.

    Atrocities

Atrocities was Christian Death's fourth album and the first with Valor Kand taking over main duties after Rozz Williams' departure. The album's subject matter deals almost exclusively with the Holocaust including songs about Auschwitz and Josef Mengele. Recorded at Rockfield Studios in Monmouth, Wales it also featured the songwriting and arrangement skills of Barry Galvin, who, along with Johann Schumann, would leave the group upon the completion of Atrocities - both went on to form Mephisto Walz.

    Bach: Five Concertos for Harpsichord

" Rondeau is one of the most natural performers one is likely to hear on a classical music stage these days. Affectation and ostentation are not part of his makeup and, once seated at the instrument, he and the harpsichord become one." -The Washington Post

Jean Rondeau, the imaginative young French harpsichordist, describes the Bach family as "one of the great dynasties of western music". Having devoted his first Erato disc, Imagine, to works by the towering Johann Sebastian, he now returns to Bach's world for his third release, Dynastie, which complements concertos by Johann Sebastian with concertos by his three most famous sons, Wilhelm Friedemann, Carl Philipp Emmanuel and Johann Christian.

Rondeau has described JS Bach, who has been part of his life since his childhood, as "daunting like a mighty mountain", but at the same time feels that "his music is so full of humility, so generous, that we have the right and the duty to play it, to share it, and to take the hand that he extends to us."

Brahms - Hungarian Dances (Speakers Corner)

Fritz Reiner dedicated himself to the interpretation of works by modern composers such as Richard Wagner, Richard Strauss and BÉla Bartók, and it suited him well to tackle works such as Brahms's Hungarian Dances and Dvorák's Slavonic Dances. These lively compositions require a conductor whose interaction with the orchestra is vivacious and animated. Reiner always demanded utmost concentration and perfection from his ensemble. Under his baton, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra plays with enthusiasm and without restaint; no trace of a sterile concert atmosphere is found in this recording.

Reiner's penchant for effects is not irritating, but rather adds highlights which support his highly musical interpretation, indeed one even forgets this trait when listening to the brilliant music.

From a tonal point of view, the sound is beautifully balanced and reaches the highest standards despite its recording date of 1960 - or maybe just for that reason? The recording is characterized by its brilliance, warmth and vivacity with the result that listening becomes a true musical pleasure.

    Musicians:

    • Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

    • Fritz Reiner (conductor)

Recording: June 1960 at Sofiensaal, Vienna by James Brown

    Production: Erik Smith

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Brahms - Piano Concerto 1 (Speakers Corner)

Brahms originally intended his Piano Concerto No. 1 as a symphony and he extensively reworked his ideas before setting down the work in the form as we know it today. The composer's original intentions still shimmer through however, for the work goes far beyond mere concertante playing and a display of virtuoso brilliance by the soloist. The first movement in particular, with its relentless, threatening main theme, embodies Brahms's dramatic symphonic writing and even a conciliatory secondary theme offers no relief for it too must give way to the heavy, fateful initial theme.

The passionate and grandiose opening movement is followed by an Adagio full of tranquillity and quiet devotion; the solemn atmosphere is taken to exalted heights by the soloist and orchestra only to fade out pianissimo.
Although the forceful, belligerent Finale occasionally conjures up the dark powers of the first movement, the work ends in a confident and cheerful vein.
It is amazing how the sheer presence of the emotions in this composition have been captured on the present DECCA recording from 1962. This is not only true of the gripping interpretation but also of the recording itself which remains transparent and brilliant throughout.

Ludwig van Beethoven's "Symphony No. 9 in D
minor, Op. 125" (also known as "the Choral"), is
    Beethoven's final complete symphony. Completed
in 1824, the symphony is one of the best-known
works in classical music. "Egmont Overture, Op.
84" by Ludwig van Beethoven, is a set of incidental
music pieces for the 1787 play of the same name
by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It consists of an
overture followed by a sequence of nine pieces
for soprano, male narrator and full symphony
orchestra. Beethoven wrote it between October
1809 and June 1810. The "Leonora Overture No.
3, Op. 72a was composed in 1806, and is the most
successful of the three Leonora overtures.

Following on from the release of World Be Gone in May
of 2017, Erasure (Andy Bell and Vince Clarke) will be
releasing a companion piece via Mute.

World Beyond is a completely re-recorded version of
World Be Gone featuring classical interpretations of the
tracks. Late last year, Andy Bell travelled to Brussels to
re-record the album with The Echo Collective, a Belgian
based classical music ensemble who have worked with A
Winged Victory for the Sullen, Stars of the Lid, Johann
    Johannsson and more.

World Beyond still sees the band in an altogether
more thoughtful and reflective mood. On "World Be
Gone", recent political upheavals are given a thoughtful
examination and, as highlighted on the painted artwork
showing a ship's masthead rising up from being
submerged in the stormy waters, Erasure are looking
ahead, towards an expectant future which points towards
love as evidenced the buoyant album closer "Just A Little
Love": "Just a little love, not the hate.

Brahms - Sonata for Cello and Piano (Speakers Corner) (Awaiting Repress)

The original pressing just doesn't hold a candle to this re-issue! Lovingly re-mastered from the original Mercury Living Presence analog tapes, Speakers Corner has done an astounding job on this album. Hear Starkers bold and natural cello and Seboks piano reproduced with perfect clarity and tonality. The performances are exceptional; lively and heartfelt. The sound quality is purely first rate. Outstanding music, impeccably performed, and the sound quality is the best youll hear! It just doesnt get better than this!

Brahms' Cello and Piano Sonatas could well be described as 'romantic expression dressed in classical garb,' filled as they are with the same musical philosophy that is to be found in many of his instrumental works. Although 21 years lay between the two compositions, Brahms remained true to the formal musical language of the Viennese masters, and this brought him and other composers of his time the reproach of imitating Beethoven.

The unmistakable personal style of Brahms is reflected in the sweeping first movement which is in the manner of a serious song and calls for sensitive but by no means feeble bowing. Starker's wiry, austere playing keeps a check on any excessive emotion and instead brings the music to life in great detail.

    Musicians:

    • Janos Starker (cello)

    • Gyorgy Sebok (piano)

Chopin - Scherzo No. 3 / Brahms - Rhapsodies (Speakers Corner)

The debut recording by the Argentinian pianist Martha Argerich took the public by the storm all over the world - and the applause has still not subsided! A mere glance at the repertoire shows that she was reaching for the stars. To bring five composers together on an LP of roughly 45 minutes length means nothing other than speaking five different musical languages - and Martha Argerich proves herself a master of them all! The demonic opening of the Scherzo in C sharp minor gives way to an iridiscent dialogue which sings and sparkles beyond compare. The Barcarolle rocks gently along; Prokofiev's Toccata is filled with dynamic force and nervous agitation; Ravel's Jeux d'eau is pensive and introverted, with the water rippling in a circular motion. As a contrast, the two famous Brahms Rhapsodies are performed with passion, impetuosity and occasionally the required heaviness.

This recording is surely one of the brightest candles to burn anew on Deutsche Grammophon's birthday cake.

This record was part of the 3-LP Set "The Conductors" and is now available again.

    Mozart: Gran Partita

Can a small ensemble perform a monumental work? Absolutely, as is demonstrated so impressively by Mozart's Serenade for Winds in B flat major, K. 361. Just a handful of musicians - 13 in all - enchant us for well over 45 minutes with a superb and inimitable serenade of symphonic proportions. In this highly original composition one must constantly admire the thrilling presence of the players who perform brilliantly both as soloists and in pairs. Bowing to the traditions of the Viennese Divertimento, Mozart unfolds his artistic and entertaining ideas before his good-humoured audience, both those of then and of now. The small forms, such as the courtly Minuet and the cheerful Laendler, provide a marked contrast to the sanctified Adagio and the blithe Rondo-Finale in the manner of a drinking song.
The Stuttgart Winds perform with freshness and inspiration, and the sound is further enhances by Tacet's recording engineer Andreas Spreer, using half-speed mastering to achieve the best-possible sound. The contemporary author Johann Friedrich Schink would have had much pleasure from this deceleration of speed that improves the quality of sound; he described his pleasure at a concert in the following words: » every instrument was played by a maestro - oh what an effect - glorious and grandiose, inspired and sublime.«
