John Cale Fear'
FearNearly five years into his solo career, Velvet Underground alum John Cale headed to the studio to reinvent himself yet again in 1974. The result, Fear, became the first of a trio of eclectic albums all released in a period spanning just inside 14 months for Island Records. On this, his fourth solo release and first collaboration with Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera and Brian Eno, Cale changes form with every composition.
Back on domestic vinyl for the first time in decades, this RTI-pressed edition of Fear is cut at Mobile Fidelity by in-house engineer Krieg Wunderlich and features stunning sonics. Quiet surfaces, faithful artwork, and the opportunity to hear Cale's incisive fare unfold amidst wide soundstages and black backgrounds-not to mention the intense content within-make this Wax Cathedral LP a must for music aficionados.
A smooth, textured departure from the clamor of the Velvets but a darker, more rage-filled concoction than Cale's 1973 set Paris 1919, Fear amazes with boundless range. Whether he's channeling the sweet, gentle Doctor Jekyll in symphonic ballads like "Emily and Ship of Fools, sharpening his teeth as the demented Mr. Hyde in the graffiti-strewn city-rock anthem "Gun, or thrilling with morbid joy in Fear is a Man's Best Friend," Cale effortlessly metamorphoses from one persona to the next. The whimsical Man Who Couldn't Afford to Orgy bounces into the earnest, misty You Know Me More than I Know."
In the background, Manzanera's guitar buzzes and stings as Eno sculpts a changing landscape of textures with his synthesizer. Infused with sarcastic or cynical lyrics, sweeping melodies, and a wide-eyed sense of exploration, Fear spins rage into beauty and back again.

Built In SunBuilt In Sun is a new project from Joe Plummer, drummer for The Shins, Cold War Kids
and Mister Heavenly. Joe has also produced and co-recorded an all drum project
called Hew Time (with Dale Crover and Coady Willis from The Melvins), released on
Joyful Noise in 2014. Joe has also toured and recorded with Modest Mouse and The
Black Heart Procession drums and percussion over the course of the last 10 years.
Built In Sun started during touring breaks between The Shins "Port of Morrow" and
Cold War Kids "Hold My Home" releases. Built in Sun began as an instrumental idea,
with inspirations landing somewhere between John Cales "Fear", the punk vibe of the
Wipers and John Reis, and his favorite soundtrackists John Brion and Clint Mansell.
After the first instrumental mixes were finished (with the help of Richard Swift) he
decided that the tunes and melodies just might be cool enough to ask a few of his pals
to sing. Pall Jenkins (The Black Heart Procession) was the first. Within a day Pall sent
back John John, with solid scratch vocals. Another song came the next day, with new
ones following almost each day afterward .There was no use to ask anyone else.
The songs really came together with the addition of Pall's vocals and it felt great to
collaborate with him again. With this, Built In Sun was complete1. Honeybear

Live At RockpalastWhen John Cale appeared onstage at Grugahalle Essen, Germany on October, 13th 1984, it was nearly 3 o'clock in the morning and the atmosphere in the hall was as tense and menacing as the conert that followed.
Starting with the self ironic Autobiography, this concert represents the rock musician John Cale, playing highlights from his last studio album Caribbean Sunset as well as all-time classics like Fear Is A Man's Best Friend, Paris 1919 and a breathtaking version of the Velvet Underground classic Waiting For The Man.
Supported by David Lichtenstein (drums), Andy Heermans (bass) and David Young (guitar), John Cale presented the songs in very rough, sparse, nearly minimalistic arrangements, always cutting the edge and strictly combing the point in every song. Up to this day, this performance remains one of the most spectacular concerts in the history of the Rockpalast series.1. Autobiography
