    The Yellow Princess (Pure Pleasure)

This particular John Fahey LP is a personal favourite of many of his devout fans for several reasons. And although such a judgment is tough, if one were looking to own only one album by this unique guitarist, The Yellow Princess could be the one. The recording sound is among the best of his many releases; at the proper volume, the effect is as if one had taken up residency inside the sound hole of a giant acoustic guitar. The program of pieces is marvellously emotional and varied, with many moments of precisely stated harmonies moving at courageously slow tempos. The second piece on the first side, View (East from the Top of the Riggs Road/B&O Trestle), is surely one of his masterpieces, on a par with Charles Ives for musical Americana. It is a great added bonus to have liner notes by the artist, some of the best and most absurd text he ever came up with. Yet another reason this is one of Fahey's top sides is it allows a chance to hear one of his few collaborations with other musicians. Several members of the fine rock group Spirit are present, along with drummer Kevin Kelley, for several lovely pieces, including the March! For Martin Luther King, a remarkably heartfelt tribute that could have gone on much longer. Taped sounds and electronic effects on The Singing Bridge of Memphis, Tennessee certainly predict the more noisy stuff Fahey would get into in the later part of his career.

    Musicians:

    • John Fahey (guitar, vocal)

    • Jay Ferguson (organ, piano)

    • Mark Andes (electric bass)

    • Matt Andes (guitar)

    • Kevin Kelley (drums)

Recording: 1968 at Sierra Sound Laboratories, Berkeley, CA, USA

Production: John Fahey & Barret Hansen

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Blind Joe Death Volume 1

For several years major labels had been issuing records in both mono and stereo formats. By 1967 Takoma was doing well enough financially to justify the recording of Fahey's first and second albums for the burgeoning stereo market. Thus Vol.1: Blind Joe Death, as the record would be titled henceforth, was recorded for the third time and it is probably this release that most people are familiar with today. For the new version Fahey recorded all but one song on the album. He recorded one new track for the reissue: I'm Gonna Do All I Can for My Lord. His new take of the Episcopal hymn In Christ There Is No East or West would become the most well-known and oft-played song on the album.

Death Chants, Breakdowns, And Military Waltzes

Death Chants is John Fahey's second album, following the brilliantly apocryphal Blind Joe Death. As massive as that earlier work was, it represented only a tentative first step towards the fields of hodologic splendor that our hero would go on to create. Death Chants represents a much more fully realized syncretism of the modernist and primitive poles between which Fahey wobbled. It is also the first album he deigned to release entirely under his own name and the one with which he truly began to cast a shadow across the blandly-lit landscape of the world's subconscious.

The Seal of the Blue Lotus

Originally released on John Fahey's Takoma Records in 1965, The Seal of the Blue Lotus is the debut album from American guitar soli legend Robbie Basho. In college Basho immersed himself in the study of Asian art and culture, even changing his last name to that of the Japanese poet Matsuo Basho, and his music shows a much greater Eastern influence than contemporaries like John Fahey and Peter Lang. Basho was particularly entranced by the raga form which is apparent in classics like "Dravidian Sunday" from this album. A guitar soli masterwork reissued here on 180 gram vinyl.

Reissued on 180 Gram Gatefold Vinyl in a Deluxe Tip-on Jacket With an Exact Replica of The Original 12 Page Booklet.

The Voice Of The Turtle is one of the most beguiling albums from one of America's most legendarily beguiling musicians. Originally released in 1968 on his own Takoma label, Fahey credits some of the compositions and performances to the fictional guitarist Blind Joe Death, and some of the songs are actually rumored to not be Fahey at all but in fact obscure blues 78s. Whatever the case may be, it's one of Fahey's most adventurous and beautiful LPs.

American Epic: The Best of Mississippi John Hurt

Blues fingerpicking guitarist, singer and sharecropper Mississippi John Hurt was born in the heart of Mississippi Hill Country, along the veiny tributaries of the great American river. His moving renditions of "Frankie" and "Spike Driver Blues" were included in Harry Smith's American Anthology of Folk Music in 1952 and were vitally influential on the Greenwich Village folk music revival of the 1960s as well as John Fahey's development of the American Primitive Guitar genre.

The Dance Of Death And Other Plantation Favorites

Originally released in 1964. Dance of Death offers a glimpse of an artist in transformation. More than half the album's titles draw from the traditional blues and country repertoire Fahey had spent his teen years and young adulthood collecting, listening to, and learning to play, yet the recordings proved once and for all that his interests lay in musical transfigurations rather than preservation - Fahey was not afraid to use these old tunes as raw material.

    6 & 12 String Guitar

The release of this truly iconic album virtually launched Leo Kottke out beyond the St. Paul-Minneapolis confines where he had been ensconced as a local phenom. By jumping on board John Fahey's burgeoning Takoma label, Kottke's guitar wizardry (especially finger-picking a 12-string, usually reserved as rhythm accompaniment) gave other guitarists far and wide, second thoughts. Throw in some sassy slide work on both 6 & 12 String Guitar and you'll know why this particular record is commonly referred to as an Intro to Guitar 101. With twelve original compositions plus a few by J.S. Bach, Kottke's blues, folk, country and classical channelings dictate both his playful and reflective approach on each. Highlights include blazing picking techniques on Busted Bicycle and Vaseline Machine Gun with some muscular bottleneck slide work on The Sailor's Grave On The Prairie.

Paranoid Cat is Philadelphia guitarist Chris Forsyth's third solo album and the first for Family Vineyard. It is a sprawling, harmonically-charged side-long suite backed by a clutch of compositions merging raw and delicate American roots traditions. The kaleidoscopic arrangements of Paranoid Cat are a leap from the stripped down attack on Forsyth's hotly acclaimed 2009 Dreams - to be reissued by Family Vineyard later this year -- with hints of John Fahey's America, Richard Lloyd's work with Television, John Lee Hooker, and Van Dyke Parks all being identifiable somewhere in the swirling mix.

    The Wanting

The Wanting, Glenn Jones first album for Thrill Jockey, was recorded in a fourth floor apartment on Commonwealth Avenue, Allston, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston, overlooking the commuter train line. If you listen carefully to the record, you can occasionally hear trains going by in the background. Reuben Son recorded the album between December 12, 2010, and April 20, 2011. The Wanting was mixed and mastered by long time collaborator Matthew Azevedo. Simply put, The Wanting is a collection of original compositions for solo acoustic steel string guitar, six-string, 10-string and bottleneck, and 5-string open-back banjo.

Glenn Jones, a 30+ year devotee of the so-called American Primitive school of acoustic steel string guitarists, has been playing guitar since the age of 14. He formed Boston psych-rock band, Cul de Sac, in 1989 and led it on its 20 year journey to nowhere, leaving nine albums in its wake, including collaborations with guitarist John Fahey and Can's Damo Suzuki.

Digging In The Dust: Home Recordings 1976

Songwriter/guitarist Mark Fosson grew up in Kentucky, where he began writing songs while he was still in his early teens. In the late '70s he sent some song demos to John Fahey's West Coast-based Takoma Records, and Fahey, impressed with what he heard, offered Fosson a recording deal. Fosson lost no time in relocating to Los Angeles and began recording with Fahey, but as bad luck would have it, Takoma was in some difficulty, and the label soon folded. Fahey allowed Fosson to retain the master tapes of the sessions, however.

Now located on the West Coast, Fosson met fellow songwriter Edward Tree, and the two began working together, eventually forming the Bum Steers, a country-tinged group, in the late '80s. Fosson material appeared on several soundtracks through the 1990s. In 2001 he began collaborating with singer/songwriter Lisa O'Kane, who recorded several of his songs, and Fosson also began recording a solo project, Jesus on a Greyhound, which was eventually released on Big Otis Records. The record drew positive reviews and Fosson was frequently compared to Americana artists like Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Joe Ely, John Prine, and Guy Clark.

The Fahey material finally saw the light of day as The Lost Takoma Sessions from Drag City Records in 2006. His instrumental piece Another Fine Day is featured on the critically acclaimed Tompkins Square compilation Imaginational Anthem. Now Tompkins Square has put together more hard to come by but welcome material from this gifted artist with the collection Digging In The Dust: Home Recordings 1976, an 11-track set of home recordings Fosson made circa 1976.

    Hold Time

Hold Time is an eloquent and startlingly beautiful album. While past critics have compared him to everyone from John Fahey to Tom Waits to his old friend Howe Gelb, with Hold Time it's clear that M. Ward, with his brilliant guitar playing and innate sense of melody, is one of those rare and special talents who defy comparisons and compartmentalization. Over the past few years, Ward has found an ever-increasing and dedicated audience; his last three albums, Transfiguration of Vincent, Transistor Radio and Post-War, have struck a singular chord among music fans. His deft guitar picking, bar room piano, and voice like drizzled honey make him a huge favorite of music critics and the focus of public praise from such disparate talents as Norah Jones and Oasis' Noel Gallagher, the former taking him on a global tour as her sole support act. In 2008, he was also part of the duo known as She & Him, a project he began with Zooey Deschanel. The duo's debut album, Volume One, was produced by M. Ward and has enjoyed international success. Like a true American treasure, M. Ward cuts his own groove while music fans continue to fall under his whispered spell.

    Louisiana Blues (Colored Vinyl)

Limited Edition Of 600 On Bottleneck Brown Vinyl

Comes With A 8 Page Booklet

Over 50 years since his discovery by ethnomusicologists Dr. Harry Oster and Richard Allen in the prison farm of Angola, Louisiana, what is it that makes the blues as sung and picked by Robert Pete Williams such a singular listening experience, unequaled elsewhere in that musical form? As Peter Guralnick, in his Feel Like Going Home book writes: "It's difficult to approve the banalities of most blues singers after listening to Robert Pete Williams. More than anyone else he shatters the conventions of the form and refuses to rely upon any of the clichÉs, either of music or of lyric, which bluesman after bluesman will invoke. Instead he sings blues which reflect a unique and personal vision; he makes each song unmistakably his own."

Unfamiliar keys, clichÉ-free lyricism, spontaneity, an individualistic style in invoking his particular blues, all make Robert Pete Williams an idiosyncratic entry into the canon. It's impossible to listen to blues artists before him and hear strains of his particular style. None have matched it since. Louisiana Blues contains 10 songs recorded in the month of July 1966 out in Berkeley, California for John Fahey's Takoma imprint.

    Fate Is Only Twice

Released as a short-run private press LP in 1965, 'Fate Is Only Once' has long been a coveted collectible among American Primitive guitar enthusiasts. The album presages the broader movement. Acoustic musicians were still largely stuck in a rigid Folk mindset in 1965, and there are just not that many other examples of the exploratory guitar sounds found on 'Fate' during this time period. Alternating between haunting originals and jaunty blues-based traditional numbers, this absurdly rare LP was reissued by Tompkins Square in 2006.

Taussig's only other recorded works appear on the long out-of-print Takoma compilation 'Contemporary Guitar Spring '67' alongside John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Max Ochs and Bukka White. Taussig spent years as an educator, published instructional guitar books, and traveled extensively to photograph weird museums. Amazingly, he returns with his first album in 47 years, appropriately titled 'Fate Is Only Twice'. The same stark, smoldering playing is evident, all the humor and inventiveness intact.

    The Magic City

On the original 1965 The Magic City LP, issued on Saturn, the monster 27-1/2 minute title track sprawled across side A. Ra customarily supervised the Arkestra's improvisational process via keyboard cues or hand signals. He was always in charge-hence critic Simon Adams describing the title track as 27 minutes of controled freedom. The Magic City was never performed in concert; saxophonist John Gilmore said it was unreproducible, a tapestry of sound. Although shorter in scope than side A's magnum opus, the four works on The Magic City's flip side reflect the same improvisational approach, spatiality, and lack of structure. One session outtake, Other Worlds, an alternate version of Shadow World, is included as a bonus track on side B.

For this definitive edition, historical and technical liner notes are provided by noted jazz historian Ben Young, who restored and remastered the album with his Triple Point Records partner Joe Lizzi. Both men have been recognized for their extensive work on the Grammy Nominated Albert Ayler boxset, released on John Fahey's Revenant records in 2005.

First-generation Saturn pressings of The Magic City were monophonic. A full stereo version had been issued on Sun Ra's Thoth subsidiary label sometime after 1969; however, it suffered from a technical flaw that prevented many copies of the LP from tracking cleanly through the first cut on side B. A 1973 gatefold LP reissue on Impulse featured reprocessed stereo. For this definitive reissue, Cosmic Myth Records used stereo sources which are superior to the Thoth pressing.

Cosmic Myth Records issues recordings under license from Sun Ra LLC, comprised of the heirs and rights holders of Sun Ra's music. The series is being co-produced and supervised by Irwin Chusid (Raymond Scott, Esquivel, Langley School Music Project) and Michael D. Anderson, who maintains the Sun Ra Music Archive, the world's foremost collection of original Ra session masters.

The Great San Bernardino Birthday Party

Originally released in 1966. Fahey's never recorded an album that was more thoroughly of its moment. From the groovy flute and twangy sitar accompaniment to the backwards guitar, this Birthday Party is a charmingly trippy 60s time capsule. But it isn't a two dimensional one. The album gains immense depth from the tension between his sweeping, fingerpicked melodies and discordant string-battery. It's the audible battle between yearned for rose colored luminescence and ankle blistering hellhound darkness that enables this record to transcend its hippie dreaminess.

    Labor Against Waste

"What a real self contained, modern day troubadour looks and sounds like. A voice to be reckoned with in the years to come." - American Songwriter There is a fearless quality to the music of new ANTI- signing Christopher Paul Stelling. A voice that sounds both old and young, an effortless yet intricate finger-picking guitar style, and lyrics that are dramatic and intensely confessional. It's a sound that channels the restless spirit of a young man who left home to travel the country, writing haunting and impassioned songs formed by endless nights alone on stage with a guitar, playing to packed houses, other times to nearly empty rooms. Stelling estimates that he's played over four hundred shows in just the past three years. It places him within a longstanding tradition that serves to build both character and vision. Labor Against Waste features Stelling's astonishing guitar work, a melodic finger-picking style influenced in large part by blues legends such as Skip James and Mississippi John, masters like John Fahey, and banjo greats Dock Boggs and Roscoe Holcomb. On top of this soars Stelling's voice, a resonant baritone that calls to mind classic troubadours from Tim Hardin to Steve Earle. Accompanied by an ensemble of stomps, claps, french horn, flugelhorn, kettle drums, string quartet, and a chorus comprised of members from the Low Anthem, in whose studio Stelling recorded the album, Labor Against Waste is the opening statement in what should be a long and storied career.

St. Carolyn By The Sea / Suite From 'There Will Be Blood'

Dessner: St. Carolyn By The Sea; Greenwood: Suite From 'There Will Be Blood'

Never before have classical and rock converged in such an organic, compelling and sensual way as they do in the three short orchestral works written by and featuring The National guitarist Bryce Dessner on his new release St. Carolyn by the Sea, performed with the Copenhagen Phil and conducted by Andree de Ridder.

Dessner presents three pieces of modern classical music, written from the perspective of a rock musician who is keenly aware of the raw emotional impact music any music can have on an audience. He draws on elements from Baroque and folk music, late Romanticism and modernism, minimalist music and the blues, among others, as well as referencing the work of such legendary figures as John Fahey, La Monte Young, Bela Bartook, Glenn Branca, Benjamin Britten, Morton Feldman, Philip Glass and Steve Reich. Despite this broad spectrum of influences, his voice remains individual and distinct.

With this album, which also showcases a suite drawn from Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwoods soundtrack for There Will Be Blood, Bryce Dessner and Jonny Greenwood open up a new frontier for symphonic music.
