    American III: Solitary Man

For younger generations of musicians, having their song cut by Johnny Cash must be a little like scaling the Washington Monument. On his third album
for producer Rick Rubin's American label, Cash makes Tom Petty's I Won't Back Down sound like a companion classic to I Walk the Line. He
transforms U2's One into a sturdy testament of plainspoken faith, while he plumbs the netherworld of Nick Cave's The Mercy Seat and Will Oldham's I
See a Darkness. Amid more familiar fare (including Neil Diamond's title track), the album's sing-along standout is the deadpan, down-and-out, talking
blues of Nobody. Cash's recent originals have the age-old purity of Appalachian music, while the traditional closing of Wayfaring Stranger offers
bittersweet benediction. Merle Haggard, Sheryl Crow, and June Carter Cash provide vocal cameos. -Don McLeese

Recorded at The Cash Cabin Studio, Hendersonville, Tennessee and The Akademie Mathematique Of Philosophical Sound Research, Los Angeles,
California.Includes liner notes by Johnny Cash.Solitary Man won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. AMERICAN III

Johnny Cash Greatest Hits Volume 1

    First Time on Audiophile Vinyl

Gatefold Cover presentation of his classic 1967 multi-platinum Greatest Hits LP!!!

Mastered impeccably by Joe Reagoso and Kevin Gray from the original Columbia Records tapes

    Manufactured at R.T.I.

Johnny Cash was born during the great depression into a poor family in Arkansas. At a very young age he worked on the family farm
and experienced many of life's struggles. This is also the time he would develop his love for music, family and the Bible, which followed him
closely throughout his long career. In the early fifties after spending time in the Air Force, he moved to Memphis, became friends with folks
like Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis, and ultimately cut some sides at Sun Studios which became the catalyst
that would kick-start the beginnings of a soon to be worldwide superstar, troubadour and humanitarian unlike the world has ever known.

The folks at Columbia Records knew that this young fellow named Johnny Cash was destined for superstardom. They quickly signed
the legend to a long term deal, and his first Columbia singles like his prolific Don't Take Your Guns to Town forever etched "The Man In Black"
    trademark to his name.

In 1967 after many chart topping country and pop albums and a bevy of hit singles and Grammy Awards, more fame followed as the
brass at Columbia Records honored their journeyman Johnny Cash with his first hits collection, the multi-platinum Johnny Cash's Greatest
    Hits Volume 1.

The album was a blockbuster as it topped the charts, making this a crossover hit with both country and pop audiences, proving once again that his career was of historic merit.
Filled with more hits than a roadside jukebox, the amazing album takes off with the classic duet with wife June Carter Cash and
Grammy Award winner Jackson. This chart topping single is followed up by one of his most famous songs the number one I Walk the Line.

More treasures follow with the country belter Understand Your Man and Cash's own hit interpretation of Orange Blossom Special, which truly
made the album a treasure trove of hits.
More greatest hits follow as the LP features a nice helping of solid smashes like Ring of Fire, Five Feet High and Rising, the aforementioned Don't Take Your Guns to Town, and probably one of the first Bob Dylan covers ever with his haunting It Ain't Me Babe. In total, the
album showcases eleven important Johnny Cash recordings which have truly gone on to become international classics for all time.

    The Essential Johnny Cash

It's a great and perhaps impossible challenge to encapsulate the highlights of Johnny Cash's vast musical catalog in a two-LP, collection like this. Yet, though it barely scratches the surface, The Essential Johnny Cash does present a series of satisfying and balanced snapshots of some of the Man in Black's most memorable work for the Sun, Columbia, and Mercury labels. Above all else, these selections are wonderful reminders of Cash's rustic eclecticism.

Johnny Cash At San Quentin (Speakers Corner)

Johnny Cash was a country legend even during his lifetime, although, or perhaps because, he was very different from the numerous country singers with chequered shirts. When performing he chose to wear black as a symbol of solidarity with the oppressed and those who had no rights. His chosen outlaw image was just as convincing as the train-like boom-tiddy-boom sound of his rhythm group who lent their typical sound to many of his 500 songs.

At the very zenith of his career, Cash (who himself had committed a few minor offenses) had the idea of singing and playing for the bad guys behind the prison walls for nothing. Initially his suggestion to market the live recording was rejected, but finally his record company decided to release the album At Folsom Prison. Fired by the success of his jailhouse recording, Columbia Records released At San Quentin shortly afterwards. The recording, in which Cash and his combo were frenetically applauded more or less at the end of each verse, exceeded all expectations. Today it is still considered by Cash fans to be the best live recording by the 'man in black'.

    Musicians:

    • Johnny Cash (vocals, guitar)

    • June Carter Cash, Carter Family (voc)

    • Bob Wootton (electric guitar)

    • Marshall Grant (bass)

    • W.S. Holland (drums)

Recording: 24 February 1969 live at San Quentin State Prison, USA, by Neil Wilburn and Bob Breault

    Production: Bob Johnston

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Think You've Seen It All by Johnny Cash? Think You've Heard It All by Johnny Cash? Think Again!

An innovative artist like Johnny Cash deserves an innovative package. Here, striking unpublished images from early in Cash's career are packaged with a one-sided LP of Cash on-stage in 1957 and 1959. The flipside of this limited edition LP features a portrait of the music legend engraved into the LP's audiophile-grade 180g vinyl.

Presented in a 16-page hardcover book, Unseen Cash from William Speer's Studio is a true collector's item complete with extraordinary photos and 12-tracks of rarely heard audio! Released to coincide with the 80th anniversary of Johnny Cash's birth!

In 1955, at the dawn of his long career, Sun Records president Sam Phillips sent Johnny Cash to a nearby photographer, William Speer. Cash was fortunate because Speer was an innovative craftsman, influenced by vintage Hollywood photographers who used light in a dramatic new way. Speer shot photo sessions with Cash, between 1955 and 1958. A couple of the images were published in the 1950s, but the rest were stored away until now!

American IV: The Man Comes Around

On first thought, the idea of the Man in Black recording such covers as Bridge over Troubled Water, Danny Boy, and The First Time Ever I Saw Your
Face might seem odd, even for an artist who's been able to put his personal stamp on just about everything. But American IV: The Man Comes Around,
which also draws on Cash's original songs as well as those by Nine Inch Nails (Hurt), Sting (I Hung My Head), and Depeche Mode (Personal Jesus),
may be one of the most autobiographical albums of the 70-year-old singer-songwriter's career. Nearly every tune seems chosen to afford the ailing giant
of popular music a chance to reflect on his life, and look ahead to what's around the corner. From the opening track--Cash's own The Man Comes
Around, filled with frightening images of Armageddon--the album, produced by Rick Rubin, advances a quiet power and pathos, built around spare
arrangements and unflinching honesty in performance and subject. In 15 songs, Cash moves through dark, haunted meditations on death and
destruction, poignant farewells, testaments to everlasting love, and hopeful salutes to redemption. He sounds as if he means every word, his baritonebass,
frequently frayed and ravaged, taking on a weary beauty. By the time he gets to the Beatles' In My Life, you'll very nearly cry. Go ahead. He
sounds as if he's about to, too. Unforgettable. --Alanna Nash

This is the fourth in a series of collaborations between the original Man in Black, Johnny Cash, and producer Rick Rubin. The Man Comes Around
features new Cash compositions as well as a diverse array of cover songs, including Nine Inch Nails Hurt, Hank Williams I'm So Lonesome I Could
Cry, and Paul Simon's Bridge Over Troubled Waters. He duets with Don Henley on Desperado.

Live From Austin, TX (Jerry Lee Lewis)

"Rock and Roll's the thing and Jerry Lee's the King " or so said an English fan once upon a time somewhere. Elvis fans might dispute that title, but nobody else in the history of popular music would dare call himself "The Killer." Of all the legends who came out of Sun Records in the 1950s - Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison - no one would have bet the last one standing would be the pill-popping, whiskey-guzzling, gun-waving hellion from Ferriday, LA except The Killer, of course. Jerry Lee Lewis took black rhythm & blues, white gospel, and other funky Mississippi sounds and turned them into rock and roll. But Jerry Lee's life also is, and has always been, his piano; he has kicked and banged and set on fire (literally) many of them over the course of six-plus decades. He almost never made it to Austin City Limits. He canceled one appearance and, only weeks before this recording on October 17, 1983, his wife died in a freak swimming pool accident at their home. But he did make it, and what we have here is one of the most amazing performances ever to go down on the ACL stage. Throughout the day he was a perfect gentleman, showing up on time and acting very graciously to one and all, but once he hit the stage, all hell broke loose. The songs speak for themselves; they're ALL here. For many years later, Jerry Lee would carry a tape of this show to play for friends (and himself, many times). When I tried to book him again for a return performance, the response was, "Jerry Lee doesn't think he could possibly do a better show."

In 1994 Cash stunned the music world with this commanding collection of 13 solo acoustic performances that roll from gospel to cowboy to sarcastic folk.
Minimalism had long been Cash's meal ticket, but this time around, producer Rick Rubin stripped it all away, recording the bulk of the record in Cash's
cabin or his own living room (two cuts were captured live at the Viper Room in front of an emphatic audience). Cash offers five typically direct and vivid
originals, but he also seizes control of songs by Kris Kristofferson, Nick Lowe, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, and Loudon Wainwright. Forty years after Hey
Porter, Cash delivers a pure, naked, and incredibly moving record that, dare we say, rivals the impact of his greatest achievements. --Marc Greilsamer

Johnny Cash had already recorded some of the most important Country albums in the history of the genre, yet, although he was still making quality music
throughout the '80s, record sales and label support were the lowest he'd ever experienced in his entire career. By the early '90s, he was without a label for
the first time in four decades. Longtime fan, label owner and producer Rick Rubin stepped in, asked Johnny to return to his roots and together, they recreated
the legend of the Man In Black. Features Cash performing his own compositions as well as songs from Loudon Wainwright, Leonard Cohen, Nick
Lowe, Tom Waits and Glenn Danzig. American Recordings earned Johnny a 1995 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. A stunning return

    Original Sun Singles '55-'58

To hear Johnny Cashs swaggering Sun Records-era material is to marvel at one of the primal source-streams of what was fast becoming the headwaters of rock n roll. Cashs craggy, lunch-bucket vocals on gleaming original versions of songs like Cry! Cry! Cry!, Get Rhythm, Big River, and I Walk the Line, backed by the signature guitar style of Luther Perkins and Marshall Grants steady bass, are really just the tip of the iceberg corralled on this stunning collection. Folsom Prison Blues, Hey Porter, and So Doggone Lonesomeand plenty more just as exciting offer still more rock-solid cornerstones of the Johnny Cash legend, an edifice that will stand as long as the pharaohs pyramids.

    American II: Unchained

The first four songs on Unchained come from the songbooks of Beck, Don Gibson, Soundgarden, and Jimmie Rodgers. What might look like absurdly
unsupportable eclecticism in other artists, of course, is pretty much standard stuff for Cash. Unchained is hardly standard, though; it's more like the best
album he's made since his 1984 departure from Columbia Records. Not only is this a stack of songs perfectly and idiosyncratically suited to the man,
they're given door-rattling backing treatment by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, who prove as fitting for Cash's music as his own Tennessee Two was
back in the day. --Rickey Wright

Two years on from his triumphant comeback album, American Recordings, 1996's Unchained took the blueprint of it's predecessor and added Tom Petty
& The Heartbreakers to the mix along with Marty Stuart, Lindsay Buckingham, Flea and many others. The results were just as fantastic, adding a different
dimension and fullness to the overall sound, but maintaining the mood and atmosphere that made American Recordings such a treasure. Songs written
by Petty, Chris Cornell and Beck rub shoulders with a handful of Johnny originals.

Four Legendary Country Artists In One Super-group: Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings And Kris Kristofferson

Featuring The Hit-Singles Highwayman And Desperados Waiting For A Train

The Highwaymen were a country music super-group composed of four of the biggest outlaw country artists: Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson. The band was active as a group between 1985 and 1995.

In 1984, Glen Campbell first played the song Highwayman for Johnny Cash. The four were all together in Switzerland doing a television special and decided that they should do a project together. While the four were recording their first album, Marty Stuart again played the song for Cash, saying it would be perfect for them-four verses, four souls, and four of them.

Campbell then played the song and the quartet had the name for their new super-group The Highwaymen, the name of their first album, Highwayman, and the name of their first single. The four thought it was a perfect name for them because they were always on the road and all four had the image of being outlaws in country music.

Both the album and the single eventually reached the top spot on the country music charts.

Their remake of Guy Clark's Desperados Waiting for a Train reached the Top 20. (Clark is frequently referred to as The Fifth Highwayman.)

The four original members starred together in the 1986 film Stagecoach.

Alive At Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary

Until it closed in 2009, Tennessee's Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary was one of the most notorious penal institutions in America. Located in mountainous Petros, it was a forbidding rockpile hewn out of the rough countryside by its own inmates in 1896.

On Oct. 17, 2001, Mark Collie came to Brushy Mountain with a sheaf of newly written songs about crime and punishment and an all-star band for a pair of performances that were recorded for a live album release. Mostly, though, Collie showed up at Brushy Mountain with a mission.

God gave me the opportunity to get in there and share something that might make a difference, he says. I believed the songs could matter. I wanted to make something that people could find hope in, or redemption, or restoration, or forgiveness.

His close friendship with country icon Johnny Cash supplied the principal inspiration for his own prison recording. Collie was well aware of Cash's celebrated 1968-69 live albums recorded at California's Folsom and San Quentin penitentiaries. He also knew the impact that a 1959 performance at the latter facility had on Inmate #A-45200, better known as the legendary country star Merle Haggard. Without Johnny going to San Quentin, Collie says, there might not have been a Merle Haggard. A lot of lives were changed or made better as a result of that music. Collie began writing his own cycle of prison songs.

A top-flight crew of musicians was assembled, including guitarist Dave Grissom (John Mellencamp, Joe Ely), keyboardist Mike Utley (Jimmy Buffett, the Dixie Flyers), guitarist-mandolinist Tommy Burroughs (Memphis Riverbluff Clan), Collie's longtime accordionist Hassel Tekkle, bassist Willie Weeks (the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, B.B. King), drummer Chad Cromwell (Neil Young, Mark Knopfler), and guitarist-fiddler-vocalist and solo star Shawn Camp. Austin-based critics darling Kelly Willis, who takes lead vocals on two tracks, also supplied backup vocals on several numbers; the late Texas blues giant Clarence Gatemouth Brown is the album's other special guest.

Alive at Brushy Mountain embraces a breadth of American styles - country, blues, gospel, bluegrass, and rock n roll. It largely comprises striking original material, which contemplates the convict's lot with compassion, keen detail, and sometimes boisterous humor.
