Unearthed (Box Set)9x 180-Gram Vinyl Box Set Featuring 79 Songs
Features A Pair Of Cloth-bound Books Housed In An LP-Sized Black Cloth Slipcase
One Book Holds The Nine LPs, While The Other Is A Gorgeous 60-Page Coffee Table Book
Coffee Table Book Incorporates Sylvie Simmons' Extensive Liner Notes, Drawn From Five Days Of Interviews At Cash's Home In Tennessee, As Well As Cash And Rubin's Comments On Every Song On The Set, Plus A Copious Selection Of Photographs From The Recording Sessions, Including Some Of The Last Photos Ever Taken Of Cash
Johnny Cash's much-acclaimed box set of primarily unreleased material, Unearthed, is to be reissued as a nine-album vinyl box set. To celebrate the Man in Black's enduring and influential legacy, American Recordings and UMe have reconfigured this monolithic collection for its first-ever vinyl release, spreading Unearthed's 79 songs over nine high-quality 180-gram vinyl LPs while expanding the original box's distinctive packaging for the long-playing format.
The Unearthed vinyl box features a pair of cloth-bound books housed in an LP-sized black cloth slipcase. One book holds the nine LPs, while the other is a gorgeous 60-page coffee table book that incorporates Sylvie Simmons' extensive liner notes, drawn from five days of interviews at Cash's home in Tennessee, as well as Cash and Rubin's comments on every song on the set, plus a copious selection of photographs from the recording sessions, including some of the last photos ever taken of Cash.
Unearthed was originally released as a CD box set by producer Rick Rubin's American Recordings in November 2003, two months after the country superstar's passing. An expansive box set of material, most of it previously unreleased, recorded during the artist's graceful twilight years.
The set was originally planned to celebrate Cash and Rubin's decade of recording together, and the final mixes had been sent to Cash, but he passed away before receiving them. The recordings, which run the stylistic gamut from stark balladry to punchy rockabilly to heartfelt gospel to classic covers, offer a stunning encapsulation of Cash's wide-ranging musical vision, and provide a fitting epitaph for his iconic career.
In its original CD format, Unearthed was acclaimed as an instant classic. Rolling Stone named it as one of the "100 Best Albums of the 2000s" and declared the set a slice of American culture as monumental, and as enduring, as Mt. Rushmore.
Unearthed is divided into five thematic sections. Who's Gonna Cry focuses on acoustic solo recordings, and finds Cash revisiting several classic songs from his legendary catalog. Trouble In Mind is oriented towards electric performances, and includes guest appearances by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Carl Perkins and members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, as well as Cash's wife and longtime duet partner June Carter Cash. Redemption Songs is largely acoustic, and features duets with Joe Strummer, Fiona Apple, Nick Cave and Glen Campbell. My Mother's Hymn Book demonstrates Cash's lifelong affinity for gospel music, encompassing 15 time-honored gospel standards. Best of Cash On American offers a memorable 15-song selection of highlights from Cash's first four albums with Rubin.
In the years since Cash's passing, the artist's legend has grown and his music has gained in power. It's hard to think of a more appropriate and impressive send-off for this one-of-a-kind American original than the massive musical statement that is Unearthed.Part 1: Who's Gonna Cry

Johnny Cash was born during the great depression into a poor family in Arkansas. At a very young age, he worked on the family farm and experienced many of life's struggles. This is also the time he would develop his love for music, family and the Bible, which followed him closely throughout his long career.
In the early fifties after spending time in the Air Force, he moved to Memphis, became friends with folks like Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis, and ultimately cut some sides at Sun Studios which became the catalyst that would kick-start the beginnings of a soon to be worldwide superstar, troubadour and humanitarian unlike the world has ever known. The folks at Columbia Records knew that this young fellow named Johnny Cash was destined for superstardom. They quickly signed the legend to a long-term deal, and his first Columbia singles like his prolific Don't Take Your Guns to Town forever etched "The Man In Black" trademark to his name.
In 1967 after many chart-topping country and pop albums and a bevy of hit singles and Grammy Awards, more fame followed as the brass at Columbia Records honored their journeyman Johnny Cash with his first hits collection, the multi-platinum Johnny Cash's Greatest Hits. The album was a blockbuster as it topped the charts, making this a crossover hit with both country and pop audiences, proving once again that his career was of historic merit. Filled with more hits than a roadside jukebox, the amazing album takes off with the classic duet with wife June Carter Cash and Grammy Award winner Jackson. This chart-topping single is followed up by one of his most famous songs the number one I Walk the Line.
More treasures follow with the country belter Understand Your Man and Cash's own hit interpretation of Orange Blossom Special, which truly made the album a treasure trove of hits.
More greatest hits follow as the LP features a nice helping of solid smashes like Ring of Fire Five Feet High and Rising and probably one of the first Bob Dylan covers ever with his haunting It Ain't Me Babe. In total, the album showcases eleven important Johnny Cash recordings which have truly gone on to become international classics for all time.

UNIM-FAN-1165xEddie Lockjaw Davis
Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis Cookbook Vol. 1Eddie Lockjaw Davis and Shirley Scott set an enduring standard for tenor saxophone/organ groups, beginning with this their first recording together. Davis' authoritative, hard swinging style came through his seasoning as a key player in the Count Basie band. Scott, an accomplished pianist, took up the organ when she joined Davis in 1955, emerging with her distinctive, driving yet subtle style virtually fully formed. The music on this 1958 date holds few surprises; it's meat and potatoes all the way, but it's made using the choicest ingredients. The barbecue sauce is applied in moderation, as the band steers closer to Basie-style swing than to overt R&B riffing. Davis and his working band -- Scott and drummer Arthur Edgehill -- are joined here by reed player Jerome Richardson and bassist George Duvivier. Richardson, playing flute on most tracks, provides a useful complement to Davis' tenor. Duvivier is indispensable in anchoring the music with a commanding walking bass. Edgehill's quick, light touch helps maintain the swinging, jazzy feel. The tracks comprise three strong Davis originals, two standards, including But Beautiful, which ranks as a master class in ballad playing, and the albums's centerpiece, the 12-minute plus In the Kitchen. This slow blues by Johnny Hodges has room for extended soloing all around in a performance that underlines the skill, passion and artistry that made the Davis and Scott partnership a potent and influential combination.

MadmanSean Rowe has spent much of the last year traveling the country with just his guitar, performing in people's living rooms. "It's like I'm some kind of a bearded salesman," he says, "Going door to door but instead of vacuum cleaners I'm selling all these feelings that come with the songs. It's a really intense experience for listeners to have me there in their homes playing. They're not used to having a stranger show up, play music, drink their beer and eat their food. But I think that's how we're supposed to be. It only feels strange because we've made it that way."
It is this same sense of unflinching connection that has shaped Rowe's extraordinary new album Madman. The singer, who The Wall Street Journal wrote "recalls the ecstatic intensity of late-'60s Van Morrison and stark subtlety of late-era Johnny Cash" has created a beautifully primal work. Madman is deliberately simple in both arrangement and composition. It is soul music in the purest and most literal sense, hypnotic rhythms, warmly distorted guitars and Rowe's incredible voice recalling a time, real or imagined, when music and people seemed
distinctly more connected.
The sound of Madman is influenced, in large part, by the hypnotic guitars of Delta blues. The influence is most apparent on the album's second track "Shine My Diamond Ring" with its guitar and stomping bass drum. "Desiree" is a raucous deconstructed take on early disco, with a pulsating bass, Nile Rogers-like guitar picking and a looser than ever Rowe singing with absolute abandon. But there are still the trademark ballads that first gained Rowe attention on his debut, Magic, showcases for the astonishing voice and honest emotional songwriting that continues to garner Sean Rowe much deserved acclaim.1. Man & MythMan And Myth, Roy's first studio album in 13 years, isn't just proof
that one of the leading, most erudite and passionate orators of the
British folk rock renaissance hasn't lost an iota of his gifts, but also
timely evidence for anyone who has wondered why so many musical
luminaries have been lining up to praise this enigmatic and legendary singer-songwriter.
In 2011, Harper performed a special show at the Royal Festival Hall
in celebration of his 70th birthday, playing with guests including
Joanna Newsom, Jonathan Wilson and Jimmy Page of Led
Zeppelin-who once penned a tribute called Hats Off To (Roy)
Harper. David Gilmour not only played on record and stage for
Harper, but Pink Floyd engaged him to sing Have A Cigar on the
band's landmark album Wish You Were Here. Fellow collaborator
Kate Bush has called Harper one of the greatest English songwriters while the late John Peel demanded, on his death, that cricket
obsessive Harper's When An Old Cricketer Leaves The Crease be
played at his funeral. Johnny Marr, meanwhile, has stated that
Harper's 1971 opus Stormcock was intense and beautiful and
Four of the seven tracks that constitute Man And Myth were
recorded with Jonathan Wilson at his studio in Laurel Canyon.
Wilson had been assembling a Harper tribute album and the two
struck up a friendship after meeting backstage at London's Borderline in 2012. Heaven Is Here and The Exile, the album's epic
closing tracks, and January Man were subsequently recorded
back in County Cork.
Man And Myth is incontrovertible proof to everyone of Roy Harper's
persisting brilliance, with many hallmarks of what has singled him
out since his first album 47 heady years ago.1. The Enemy

Shadows, Greys & Evil WaysThe White Buffalo releases his new record 'Shadows, Greys, and Evil Ways' via Unison Music Group. NPR All Songs Considered has called songwriter Jake Smith "an amazing storyteller" and these 14 songs trace the life story of Joey White, a small town outsider who goes to war and returns home only to find more violence as he struggles to readjust to a life away from the front lines and reconcile with the girl he left behind.
"I look at the whole thing as a love story," says Smith. "The beginning is their meeting, and because of his need and want to support her, he goes off to war, which starts his downward spiral."
Recorded at LA's Unison Music Studios and produced by the Grammy-nominated team of Bruce Witkin and Ryan Dorn, 'Shadows, Greys, and Evil Ways' sees the core trio of Jake Smith, bassist Tom Andrews, and drummer Matt Lynott joined by the likes of drumming legend Jim Keltner on "Don't You Want It" and ex-Jayhawk Jessy Greene.
The White Buffalo has had songs included in both 'Sons of Anarchy' and 'Californication,' and his new song "The American Dream" is included on the soundtrack to 'The Lone Ranger,' starring Johnny Depp, next month. Filter has said "influenced by musicians ranging from Bad Religion to Tom Waits, The White Buffalo is ready to break through and stampede into your speakers" and American Songwriter has praised his "deft songwriting chops and a booming whiskey voice."1. A Concert Behind Prison WallsJohnny Cash is one of the most influential musical figures of the last 50 years. His deep, resonant voice and sparse guitar style have given him an instantly recognizable sound that manages to sit somewhere between folk, rock and country. He has been awarded ten Grammy Awards and was the youngest ever inductee into the Country Hall of Fame. His music is as relevant today as it has ever been. The concert on this album was recorded at the Tennessee State Penitentiary in Nashville in 1976. It is one of only two of his prison concerts that were filmed for broadcast. With His Hot And Blue GuitarJohnny Cash With His Hot and Blue Guitar was not only Cash's debut album, it was also the first full-length LP released by Sun. The LP's twelve tracks include one side of his debut single, ''Cry, Cry, Cry,'' along with two of his best-known recordings, ''Folsom Prison Blues'' and ''I Walk the Line.'' Backed by ''The Tennessee Two,'' Luther Perkins on guitar and Marshall Grant on bass, the tracks are spare, direct and intense. Cash's distinctive ''boom-chicka'' rhythm propels every song as his commanding voice captures and holds the listener.
From the minute he walked into Sun Studios, Johnny Cash began a career that would see him become one of the biggest and most influential musicians of our time. Though only on Sun from 1955-58, Johnny made some of his most legendary recordings there. When he moved on to Columbia Records, Johnny left behind a large cache of material which Sun happily compiled and released on LPs throughout the 60's, mixing Cash's singles-sides with previously unissued recordings. The resulting platters were a goldmine for fans eager to hear more from country's newest superstar.
