The Queen Is Dead (Box Set)

Ranked 216/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Widely considered to be both The Smiths' finest work and one of the greatest albums ever made, 'The Queen Is Dead' has cast a significant influence over subsequent generations since it was first released in the summer of 1986. Now Warner Bros. Records can confirms the details of a newly mastered and expanded version of the album.

The album features several of the band's finest moments including the title track and 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out', as well as the iconic singles 'The Boy With The Thorn In His Side' and 'Bigmouth Strikes Again'.

You cannot continue to record and simply hope that your audience will approve, or that average critics will approve, or that radio will approve, says Morrissey. You progress only when you wonder if an abnormally scientific genius would approve - and this is the leap The Smiths took with The Queen Is Dead.

Johnny Marr adds, The Queen Is Dead was epic to make and epic to live.

    Remastered 180 Gram Vinyl

The Smiths' eclectic 1985 release finds the band branching out into rockabilly, post-punk and flashes of funk, all while refining the guitar pop of their debut. Produced by Morrissey and Johnny Marr, Meat Is Murder is the band's sole studio album to reach #1 on the U.K. charts. The Headmaster Ritual and I Want the One I Can't Have are fine elaborations on the formula the band introduced on their debut, while Rusholme Ruffians is an infectious take on rockabilly. There was no other British group making music quite like this in 1985.

    Mellow Drama

It's hard to ignore the sound of well placed hand claps, the echoing ring of a tambourine, chiming guitar and luscious vocals. That sound was fantastic sixty years ago, and those that follow the recipe with the required chops can make it sound great today. Louise Burns' debut album is full of dreamy numbers like opener Chinook (Sing From the Valley of Doubt) and the playful Buddy Holly-esque first single, What Do You Wanna Do. Citing Mazzy Star, Patsy Cline, '60s girls groups and Johnny Marr as inspiration, Burns holds up to her heroes. She dazzles in the vocal department throughout the album, but it's on the dangerously stripped-down Island Vacation that listeners will fully surrender to her charms.

    Deep Fantasy

Resilient and hard hitting rock n' roll outfit, White Lung are set to release their third album Deep Fantasy via Domino Recording Co. The band is every bit as confrontational as before, but they've managed to open their sound up just enough to draw listeners in before kicking them in the face. (In a good way.)

After a year plus of near constant touring behind Sorry - which won raves from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and Interview -White Lung slimmed to a trio in the studio; vocalist Mish Way, drummer Anne-Marie Vassiliou and guitarist Kenneth William. Deep Fantasy was made primarily in Vancouver with producer Jesse Gander (who also did both Sorry and their 2010 debut It's The Evil) in just two, ten day-long sessions at the end of last year and the start of this one. William handled bass duties on Deep Fantasy while Wax Idols' Hether Fortune will take up bass and backing vocal duties on tour for the foreseeable future.

Way is more provocative and melodic than ever on Deep Fantasy, lyrically surveying addiction ("Drown With The Monster"), body dysmorphia ("Snake Jaw") and sexual dynamics ("Down It Goes,") amongst other dinner table topics. William, a devotee of Johnny Marr "plays with the speed of an 80s hardcore dude" whirled in Vassiliou's relentless and seemingly effortless approach to drumming.

    Man & Myth

Man And Myth, Roy's first studio album in 13 years, isn't just proof
that one of the leading, most erudite and passionate orators of the
British folk rock renaissance hasn't lost an iota of his gifts, but also
timely evidence for anyone who has wondered why so many musical
luminaries have been lining up to praise this enigmatic and legendary singer-songwriter.

In 2011, Harper performed a special show at the Royal Festival Hall
in celebration of his 70th birthday, playing with guests including
Joanna Newsom, Jonathan Wilson and Jimmy Page of Led
Zeppelin-who once penned a tribute called Hats Off To (Roy)
Harper. David Gilmour not only played on record and stage for
Harper, but Pink Floyd engaged him to sing Have A Cigar on the
band's landmark album Wish You Were Here. Fellow collaborator
Kate Bush has called Harper one of the greatest English songwriters while the late John Peel demanded, on his death, that cricket
obsessive Harper's When An Old Cricketer Leaves The Crease be
played at his funeral. Johnny Marr, meanwhile, has stated that
Harper's 1971 opus Stormcock was intense and beautiful and
    clever.

Four of the seven tracks that constitute Man And Myth were
recorded with Jonathan Wilson at his studio in Laurel Canyon.
Wilson had been assembling a Harper tribute album and the two
struck up a friendship after meeting backstage at London's Borderline in 2012. Heaven Is Here and The Exile, the album's epic
closing tracks, and January Man were subsequently recorded
    back in County Cork.

Man And Myth is incontrovertible proof to everyone of Roy Harper's
persisting brilliance, with many hallmarks of what has singled him
out since his first album 47 heady years ago.

Amadou & Mariam have long cultivated a spirit of openness that they often put into practice with musicians from all backgrounds and styles. Their journeys have allowed the couple to forge lasting friendships. M. and Vincent Segal were their guests, Keziah Jones and K'naan also interacted, the Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf and British guitarist Johnny Marr were invited to jam while Manu Chao and Damon Albarn produced them with skill. No doubt, the Malian couple's history is written in the plural suggestive of their affinities.

Their land, Mali, is currently one of the most attractive centers of globalized music. The couple still draws from their region's inspiration, a living spring they draw from beyond their region. Such is the strength of Folila, reflecting a growing openness to the world of music. The idea was to produce two albums: a crossover in New York, centered around meetings, and the other more roots in Bamako, with guests mainly African, says Marc-Antoine Moreau, their loyal manager and artistic director, with sound engineer Antoine Halet.

Stage one was recorded in three weeks at the Cooper Square Hotel, which accommodated multiple guests, including Santigold, who puts her voice on Dougou Badia. Tunde and Kyp, the two poets of the combo TV On The Radio, slide naturally on Wally Katasso, a ballad mixed by Keni Takamoto, the sound engineer for Danger Mouse. As for Theophilus London, the young poet prints a subtle flow of soul-jazz onto Nebe Meri, perfectly fitting with Amadou's blues accents.

Other esthete of great black music, Amp Fiddler brings some Detroit soul on Wari, before lending his keyboard lines onto Africa My Africa, boosted by Antibalas' section, the Afro-funk combo from Brooklyn, whose brass gleam here and there. As for Jake Shears, the soul of Scissor Sisters and a fan of the couple since a tour together in England, he served his high-pitched voice on the haunting disco blues of Metemya. Last but not least, Ebony Bones puts fire on C'est Pas Facile, a track that flirts with Congolese rumba and electro sounds.

During stage two of the process, it was back to Bamako, for another three-week session, this time in the studios of Manjul, a prominent rastaman installed in Mali. He has a clear idea: to use the same basic track, the same tempo, the same tones, but putting it into perspective with long-time friends, like the percussionist Boubacar DembelÉ and Yaho the totemic bassist, and guests.

Judge for yourself: Bassekou KouyatÉ and his ngoni, Idrissa Soumaoro on kamele ngoni, Toumani DiabatÉ on kora, Zu Tereta on monochord fiddle, Tuareg guitarist Abdallah Oumbadougou: all the best subtle strings of the universe are on this record. This album sounds at once organic and electronic, both roots and rock, both retro and futuristic, and totally unlike anything else.

    Pollinator

You catch yourself when you ask Debbie Harry and Chris Stein,
one of the most captivating creative pairings in music ever, about the
creeping gentrification of New York City. You catch yourself because
Blondie was formed during a 1970s era of urban decay - a time when
the travails of being in a band, seeking an artistic outlet, or instigating a
scene as a means of existence was a survival of the fittest among streets
of heightened crime and social unrest. Certainly, those 1970s New
York streets have been glamourised in the onslaught of retrospective
looks at the punk, new wave, disco and hip-hop scenes that found their
fundamental roots in that era. But it certainly wasn't an easier time to
live there. The challenges and intensity of the city were just different.

Blondie emerged the fittest. They've outlived the groundbreaking moment
that birthed them and have adapted to time, space and industry
evolution as much as the face of New York itself. Walk into any dance
club tonight and hear a 'Call Me' or a 'Heart Of Glass'. Talk to
any hip-hop historian and recall that Debbie was an original Beastie
Boy who took rap music to the masses when it was still a block party
concern. Read any tome on the history of punk and they're interwoven
into the fabric of the one genre that still inspires most and every
band to pick a name and find a practice space. Their active presence
in our lives 40 million albums sales and countless accolades later
(including a Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction in 2006 and
NME Godlike Genius Award in 2014) isn't something anyone wants
    to take advantage of.

That's what their 11th album 'Pollinator' sets out to establish. In true
pop art fashion it's as post-modern as a concept gets and the perfect
way to move on from 2014's 40th anniversary celebrations and the
subsequent release of 'Ghosts Of Download'. In 'Pollinator' exists a
giant feedback loop - one in which Blondie created, then generations
were inspired, then those generation created and inspired, and are
now teaming up with Blondie. When the time came for Chris, Debbie
and drummer Clem Burke to "get the band back together" and make
an album, choice pioneers from the decades since Blondie's birth
were called upon to contribute songs for the record, thereby weaving
their own way into the living, breathing story of the band, a group that
directly affected their own genetic makeup. The list is enviable and
reflects the dynamism of Blondie's very own cross-pollinating past:
Johnny Marr, Sia, Dev Hynes, Charli XCX, Dave Sitek (TV On
The Radio), Nick Valensi (The Strokes) and The Gregory Brothers
all lent their creations for Blondie to interpret, each building upon the
aspect of their heroes that's bolstered their own sound.

Hatful of Hollow (Out Of Stock)

Several months after releasing their first album, The Smiths issued this collection of singles and rarities, several of which are BBC versions of songs from their debut. The Smiths treated singles as individual entities, not just ways to promote an album, and therefore many of there finest songs were never issued on their studio albums. As if this wasn't enough, this compilation contains the first appearance of what may be the band's finest moment. "How Soon Is Now" encapsulates everything good about The Smiths; Morrissey's mocking lyrics, Marr's stunning vibrato guitar and a rhythm section you could set your watch to.

Contrived by Johnny Marr, The Smiths evolved when Marr unearthed Morrissey and insisted upon a collaboration. The idea was to produce songs which were always instantaneous and listenable whilst also provoking deep thought; emeshing Morrissey's words with Marr's music in a sound which, above all, would stand apart without being inaccessible or esoteric. The guitar-based songs would blend melody without havoc, as the words - born out of absolute physical necessity - would tug at the straps of cultural straightjackets.

Christened as an antidote to a prevalent idea that modern groups would near a far-reaching, multi-syllabic name to authorise their artistry, The Smiths were completed with Andy Rourke (the bass guitar) and Mike Joyce (the drums). Joyce had served time with a clump of healthily depraved groups, whilst the other three members were without any serious musical involvement. The Smiths first surfaced in September '82, and the group determined that all their moves be surefooted and worthwhile. As a live group, The Smiths believed that it was possible to replenish appetites of both the soul and the pelvis simultaneously. They were urban, but never bleak; there was a humour in tragedy, solace in unity. The voice was the collective rage of all suppressed hysterics: Morrissey popularised the creased brow.

Always Manchester-based, The Smiths contended that one has to live somewhere... and soon rewrote the history of their city. Following misdirected collisions with major record companies, the group were adopted by Rough Trade, and the first result was the single Hand in Glove / Handsome Devil. The sound attacked the depersonalised sterility of their contemporaries whose clinical synthesized rhythms, The Smiths believed, left audiences feeling non-human and petrified of emotion. Lyrically, the fundamental idea was to use phraseology which had simply never been used before.

The Smiths took firm control of any promotional images which bore their name, and naturally their artwork would always counteract accepted ingredients of popular music, without being hostile. The Smiths maintained the integrity and ethos of their manifesto across four studio albums and a live album that was issued after their split. Their legacy matches their original ambition - to produce songs which were always instantaneous and listenable whilst also provoking deep thought. And there you are.

Strangeways Here We Come (Out Of Stock)

Recorded as the relationship between Morrissey and Johnny Marr was beginning to disintegrate, 1987's Strangeways, Here We Come would serve as the Smiths' graceful swan song. Ironically, both Morrissey and Marr consider it to be the group's best. Experimenting with sound and arrangement more than ever before, the album is a sonically rich affair filled with extremes and elaborate production. Among its many highlights are its signature tune Girlfriend In A Coma and the autobiographical Paint A Vulgar Picture which contains some of the most inspired, melodic guitar work of Johnny Marr's legendary career.

Ranked 481/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

With their eponymous 1984 debut, The Smiths began their tenure as the definitive British indie rock band as well as the torchbearers of a new musical era. Johnny Marr's inventive songwriting and Morrissey's unconventional croon made for an evocative sound that was both original and innovative. Songs about homosexuality (Hand in Glove) and child molestation and murder (Suffer Little Children) enshrouded the band in controversy and cultlike devotion, both of which would only grow from here.

Ranked 295/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
