Music from the Mountain Provinces"Our journals and recording equipment were ultimately
confiscated and stolen by the MNLF rebels. We escaped
with a single cassette, the clothes on our back, and our
lives." -David Blair Stiffler
In 1988, David Blair Stiffler risked life and limb to document
under-recorded cultural groups living lives of extreme isolation in
the mountainous Philippine regions of Nueva Ecija, Aurora, and
Luzon. These are the fruits of that expedition.
In the grand tradition of ethnographic recordings that made up the
majority of Folkways' vast and significant catalog comes Music from
the Mountain Provinces. By the mid-1980s, David Blair Stiffler was
already a most-decorated recordist, with eight Folkways LPs under
his belt. These are among the most obscure documents in the entire
Folkways catalog (and that's quite a distinctive accomplishment,
given the illustrious company in that discography.) His focus
heretofore had largely been Central and South America, capturing
sounds from largely-hidden rain forest civilizations, including the
Palicour, Miskito, Arawak, Warrau, Cuna, Choco, and Pipil tribal
and cultural groups. He would match this flair for the unknown
and undocumented in his expedition to the Philippines. Although
the works of Jose Maceda and Nicole Revel heavily documented
much of the Philippines' countryside inhabitants with a thorough
and sober effort protracted over the decades. Stiffler brought his
own panache into the equation, capturing gorgeous and revelatory
moments from some of the archipelago's least visited regions. Even
without the harrowing tale of himself and his crew being taken
hostage, contained within is a rare aural experience. These masters,
originally intended for release on Folkways, were shelved when
Stiffler returned home to news of Folkways founder Moses Asch's
death. After the tragic event of last winter's disastrous and deadly
Typhoon Haiyan (or Yolanda), these documents are even more
priceless.1. Kulintang-Badjao or Yakan Gong

Nessun Dorma - The Puccini AlbumAfter years of singing Giacomo Puccini's heroes on stage to vast critical and audience acclaim, "the world's greatest tenor"(The Daily Telegraph), Jonas Kaufmann, finally records an album entirely devoted to the world's most-loved opera composer. The new album, Nessun dorma is a selection of Puccini's stupendous tenor arias drawn from his greatest opera's including Tosca, Manon Lescaut, La Bohème, Madame Butterfly and La fanciulla del West. Spanning the breadth of Puccini's output from the early operas Le Villi and Edgar, the album culminates in the mighty aria "Nessun dorma" from his final opera Turandot. Jonas Kaufmann is joined on this album by Maestro Antonio Pappano, the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and soprano Kristine Opolais. Nessun Dorma - The Puccini Album is also available on 180-gram vinyl and on CD as a Deluxe Edition with a bonus DVD that includes an EPK plus excerpts from upcoming DVD releases Manon Lescaut and La Fanciulla del West.
Munich-born singer, Jonas Kaufmann, is without a doubt at the absolute top echelon of the operatic world. He is in extreme demand with the world's most influential conductors, selling out opera houses and concert venues months in advance wherever he performs. In 2011, he received the Opera News Award in New York and was made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France. He has been awarded "Singer of the Year" by many prestigious journals including ECHO Klassic and Musical America. Kaufmann is also an internationally sought-after concert and lieder singer. In October of 2011 he performed the first solo recital to be given at the Metropolitan Opera since Luciano Pavarotti in 1994LP1

Brooklynite Elizabeth Harper's first musical offerings appeared in the form of personal singer/songwriter fare, her airy vocals paired only with quiet strums of acoustic guitar. But having a long-held desire to make electronic music, Harper recruited producers Mark Richardson and Scott Rosenthal to assist in achieving her desired sound, and electro-pop outfit Class Actress was born. The trio wasted no time in assembling their Journal of Ardency EP, which Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor released on his Terrible Records imprint in early 2010. The five songs circulated widely, garnering acclaim and comparisons to Human League, Depeche Mode, and early Madonna at each music journal stop.
Now settled in with the folks at Carpark, Harper and co. put forth their debut long-player, Rapprocher. The album sees her playing a similar part to Journal's playful lovelorn diva, but it pushes the EP's proto-electro revisionism into new directions. Tracks like Love Me Like You Used To and Hanging On swaddle the record's heavy disco beats in diaphanous sheets of delay, and the bouncing bass of Weekend make it a prime candidate for a feel-good summer hit. Harper remains the force that binds the songs into a cohesive statement, her winking coo darting about in the deep drums and lofty arpeggios, and her passion - backed mostly with electronics - summons thoughts of Yaz's Alison Moyet. In concurrence with the title (rapprocheris French for bring closer), the candid, sincere lyrics meld with the atmosphere, enveloping the listener into Class Actress's world of 21st century romanticism.1. WishboneWishbone is the sophomore album from the British-born artist who calls New York City home. Recorded in Los Angeles with producer Ted Hutt (Gaslight Anthem, Lucero, Old Crow Medicine Show), the well crafted songs on Wishbone live up to the expectations put upon a young man the Wall Street Journal touted as a "promising talent" with "much more to say," after the release of his Liam Watson-produced debut album, A Winter Tale.
On Wishbone Long taps into a broader pallete of emotions than he has on past releases, eschewing melancholy and eloquently channeling anger and frustration into gritty, hard driving guitar parts (the majority of which are played by Long) that compliment his rough-hewn vocals. Steel guitar provides an apt counter balance, adding a hint of twang and drawn out expanse to the urgency put forth in the lyrics. Throughout the album Long displays his deft control of melody and tone, well practiced over many years of prolific songwriting.1. Devil Moon

Coney Island BabyConey Island Baby is a 1976 album by Lou Reed, originally released in January by RCA Records. It is also the title of a song on that album. Many of the album's songs were inspired by Reed's girlfriend and muse at the time, a trans woman named Rachel. According to Aidan Levy, Coney Island Baby was as much a love letter to Rachel as it was to the nostalgic Coney Island of the mind. The album's title track directly references Rachel with the line: I'd like to send this one out to Lou and Rachel, and all the kids at P.S. one ninety-two. When I Said I Wanted To Be Your DogCall it a curse: Jens Lekman's world is populated by an endless stream of women. There he is, his hair mussed and glasses off-kilter, sitting in the corner of the cafe with his journal once again - and he's being torn in two. Moments ago he fell in love with the redheaded barista who nailed his order - when she scooted that cappuccino across the counter, it was clear that there was a connection. And now, his eye catches the picture of divinity in the shape of the most finely featured brunette he's ever seen...and she's looking his way. But which way to go? It's tragic having to make such choices. Like Fellini's The Man Who Loved Women, Jens Lekman is a man forever at a crossroads between competing inspirations.
At only 23, Lekman has deservedly been the center of much hype in Scandinavia. Having made a name for himself performing under the name Rocky Dennis, he recently hit #2 on the Swedish National Pop Charts. Most everyone who's heard him believes him to be the next great pop star emerging from the streets of the DIY underground. With an angelic voice and golden ears he seems to be drinking from the same hard waters as The Carpenters, Harry Nilsson, The Magnetic Fields, Runt-era Todd Rundgren, Bill Callahan's Smog, The Modern Lovers, Rufus Wainwright and Belle & Sebastian.Side A

Paradise is There: The New Tigerlily Recordings (Awaiting Repress)Natalie Merchant's career began when, as a college student, she joined the seminal alternative rock band 10,000 Maniacs. Serving as lead vocalist, lyricist, and sometime pianist, Merchant released five critically acclaimed studio albums with the band, including the platinum-selling In My Tribe (1987), Blind Man's Zoo (1989), Our Time in Eden (1992), and MTV Unplugged (1993). Merchant left the group in 1993, after 12 years, to record her first solo album. Tigerlily (1995) was certified five-times platinum, and was followed by the platinum Ophelia (1998), Natalie Merchant Live (1999), and Motherland (2001).
In 2010, Merchant returned with a thematic double album entitled Leave Your Sleep, her debut for Nonesuch Records. A meditation on childhood and mothering, the anthology comprised 19th and 20th century American and British classic children's poetry by the likes of Robert Louis Stevenson, Christina Rossetti, Robert Graves, Edward Lear, and E.E. Cummings that Merchant had set to music. The result was praised by critics on both sides of the Atlantic, with The Wall Street Journal calling it an ideal fit between poetic and musical forms, and the Independent, a hugely ambitious and beautifully realized double album.1. NeptuneNeptune is the major label debut album from Boston progressive folk duo, Tall Heights. Neptune is the follow up to 2015's Holding On, Holding Out EP which was met with critical acclaim from outlets like NPR and The Wall Street Journal who compared their emotive harmonies and poignant lyrics to the likes of Simon & Garfunkel, Sigur Ros and Bon Iver. Of particular note is the track "Spirit Cold", the lead single from the forthcoming release.
The multi-talented singer songwriters, composers and instrumentalists featuring Paul Wright on cello/vocals and Tim Harrington on acoustic guitar/vocals got their start busking on the streets of Boston, growing up in a neighboring town in Massachusetts. Neptune is a far lusher construct than those early acoustic days - along with pristine and emotive vocal harmonies, there's subtly chugging electric guitar and a spare descending bassline on "Iron in the Fire," ethereal synthesizers and a spacious drum part on "Spirit Cold," a brittle splash of percussion to open "Backwards and Forwards" and feedback created by two cellphones on "Cross My Mind."1. Encore was produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Dave Cobb and recorded at Nashville's historic RCA Studio along with additional production at House of Blues and Farmland Studio. Noble ApeJim Gaffigan's unprecedented sixth stand-up special, Noble Ape, is set for release on vinyl via Comedy Dynamics.
In Noble Ape, comedy powerhouse Jim Gaffigan gets personal as he discusses the medical crisis that hit his wife and family this year, which almost led to his retirement. Noble Ape was recorded live at the Wilbur Theatre in Boston, MA after a sold out North American Tour of theaters and arenas.

Forget The MantraNightlands is the recording project of Philadelphia-based multi-instrumentalist Dave Hartley. The music he creates in his bedroom is itself a bed of delicate, chiming strings and bubbling synths beneath a blanket of choral vocal arrangements. Its dreamy in the literal sense, the seeds for the album were sown when Hartley began archiving musical ideas that occurred in his sleep with a simple bedside tape recorder. As a result his debut album Forget the Mantra is, in essence, a field recording of Hartleys dreams, a travel journal through pop music and a collection of psych-hymns from the first human lunar colony. The songs sound both huge and intimate, breathy and cavernous like massive echoes of a faraway concert. Its the big, shadow music from just across the lake.
The album deals with themes of anxiety, fear and the limits of concentration. Therein, it mines Hartleys personal history as often as it does influences The Beach Boys, The Traveling Wilburys and Hawkwind. Side A pulses with layers of tom tom drums on wide-open standout slow jam 300 Clouds and nimbly-picked acoustic melodies on Suzerain (A Letter to the Judge), like Crosby, Stills & Nash gone comsic-kraut. The songs roll and gallop then stop to breathe, always exhaling with what sounds like a thousand voices. Through its experimental back half, reminiscent of Bowies Low or Kate Bushs The Ninth Wave from Hounds of Love, full of vocal samples from Hartleys real life, the more pop-leaning front end is given greater context, like a close study of a plants blossom before traveling down through its root architecture.
Hartley, who for years has been a prolific sideman in many Philadelphia ensembles (most notably The War on Drugs), laid these songs to tape on a Tascam 388 iover several months, inviting friends along for feedback and ultimately, some additional tracking.1. Forget the Mantra

Caves (Awaiting Repress)Her strength seems to reside in her ability to be musically versatile. Utilizing various orchestrations, Tristen weaves a glistening web of thoughtful and extremely mature melodies that tremble with undeniable power.
"Pop hooks and pure inspiration"
- NPR All Things Considered
Her addictive debut is full of such moments: catchy refrains with multiple meanings, ear-tugging melodies with hidden hooks. She flaunts a philosophy major's palette amidst echoes of vintage rockabilly and girl group pop: Gods battle, queens bid their rule, girlfriends enable druggy lovers.
- Rolling Stone
Tristen Gaspadarek has crafted a confident, poignant folk-pop debut that never wants for hooks, and manages to undercut its sing-songiness at every turn with unflinching lyrics and mature songwriting.
- The Onion AV Club
Tristen comes from Nashville, TN and the Jenny Lewis school of modern, God-fearing country, but she caught up to her contemporaries and surpassed them in one fell swoop. As soon as the vocals kick in on the opener Eager for Your Love, it's impossible not to listen to this record all the way through. Man this girl can sing.
"She's been Nashville's best-kept secret, but this single-named chanteuse is poised for bigger and better things with the recent release of her sprightly new album of baroque folk-pop. "Charlatans at the Garden Gate'' glimmers with traces of Neko Case, the Shangri-Las, and maybe just a touch of Loretta Lynn.
- The Boston Globe
With or without Tristen's acute capacity to portray relationships and ideology gone wrong, Charlatans is a musical document billowing over with rich, vintage hues and irrepressible hooks, her reverence for the lions of pop music and confident sense of self all meted out in the same breath.
This week, with the release of her confident debut, Tristen reminds us just what it was we loved about her to begin with.

ADAD-ANTI-7711xLost In The Trees
Includes CD Of Full Album
When Lost In The Trees set out to record Past Life, their
third album for ANTI-, they knew they needed a break
with the past. On their first two releases Picker had used an
expanded six-member band to render his carefully composed,
classical-inflected songs. For the new album, the band is pared
to a lean electronic-rock four-piece; the arrangements are modern,
spare, minimal, emphasizing groove and rhythm, blending the sonic architecture of 21st century electronic dance music, and the sensual swerve
of post-Bowie 80s pop.
The band made their next break with past practice by electing to work with
an outside producer for the first time. Nicolas Vernhes, whose credits include
breakthrough albums from Deerhunter, Dirty Projectors and Animal Collective, endorsed the band's new minimal aesthetic, and the
question in the studio became, "How much can we strip
away?" But fans that came to the band lured by the lush
classicism of All Alone In An Empty House and A Church That
Fits Our Needs (the Wall Street Journal's album of the year in 2012)
will not be disappointed. The haunting lyricism of Picker's voice and
melodies has not diminished in the new sparer approach, but instead rises
to the fore, bringing out that timeless quality of the melodies that is the common
ground of both folk and pop music. This pop quality, buried but always present
in previous efforts, shines on Past Life; not pop in any trivial, retro sense, but the
yearning lilt of Harry Nilsson or Mark Hollis, that floating melodicism that Relix
found so "achingly beautiful."1. Excos

Run River North
2-LP Gatefold Package With Bonus Track
"Run River North stays the course - and finds success." - NPR
"Snappy rock and chamber folk frames their tales of their parents' dreams and struggles to find purchase in America."
- Wall Street Journal
"the band's ambitious folk pop instrumentals, and embellished with frontman Alex Hwang's dulcet, Ben Gibbard-like tones,
is a sense of possibility" - MTV World
In the course of several months, Run River North went from playing a handful of hometown shows in Los Angeles to
performing to an audience of millions on late-night show Jimmy Kimmel Live! It was an explosive trajectory for the sextet,
whose uplifting anthems march to the beat of drums, jangling guitars and a rapturous string section. The rapid ascent from
obscurity launched a new chapter for the band (then called Monsters Calling Home), whose upcoming full-length self-titled
debut ventures further into effervescent rock anchored with a down-home aesthetic.
The band recorded their self-titled debut with producer Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, Built to Spill, Band of Horses). The songs ebb
and flow with optimism, traversing emotional and musical landscapes woven into the strings duo of Daniel Chae and
Jennifer Rim, alongside the galloping rhythm section of bassist Joe Chun, keyboardist Sally Kang and drummer John
Chong. Together, their voices coalesce as one, a chorus calling out with a gentle urgency. The music of Run River North
explores the ever-shifting search for self, from the energetic indie-rock interludes to the lonesome guitar strums, always
asking the question: Is home a place or is it the people in your life? "We're not a posh, polished pop sound," says Alex
Hwang, Run River North's singer/songwriter. "We have stories we want to tell and they take a little more time. After all, the

Brushfire Records is set to release the third full-length album from Afie Jurvanen, who performs as Bahamas. The new release, Bahamas
Is Afie, is the first self-produced album from the Ontario-based musician. With this record he pursued a far more complex sound than on prior releases
and is responsible for the majority of the instrumentation. The album follows 2011's Barchords, which was praised for being a reserved yet melodically
rewarding exploration of rewarding exploration of relationships and heartache by The New Yorker.
SPIN recently premieredAll The Time, the first pre-release track from the album. The first radio single Stronger Than That will go to radio mid-July.
Jurvanen sought to create and produce a more developed arrangement of strings, brass, winds, orchestral percussion, and chamber choruses on
Bahamas Is Afie. Prior to this record, Jurvanen's releases have all been sparsely recorded bedroom records with this new album making a transition to a
more complex and fully arranged collection of music.
Jurvanen's debut album Pink Strat was released in 2009. The record was nominated for both a Juno Award and the Polaris Music Prize. Bahamas hit the
road for two years after the release, touring with artists such as Wilco and Robert Plant. In 2011 he released Barchords, which was nominated for two
Juno Awards including Adult Alternative Album of the Year and Songwriter of The Year and was named Best Singer/Songwriter Album of 2012 by iTunes.
Wall Street Journal praised the record as bluesy and hypnotic, and The Los Angeles Times called is a delightfully rare kind of record that commands an

MadmanSean Rowe has spent much of the last year traveling the country with just his guitar, performing in people's living rooms. "It's like I'm some kind of a bearded salesman," he says, "Going door to door but instead of vacuum cleaners I'm selling all these feelings that come with the songs. It's a really intense experience for listeners to have me there in their homes playing. They're not used to having a stranger show up, play music, drink their beer and eat their food. But I think that's how we're supposed to be. It only feels strange because we've made it that way."
It is this same sense of unflinching connection that has shaped Rowe's extraordinary new album Madman. The singer, who The Wall Street Journal wrote "recalls the ecstatic intensity of late-'60s Van Morrison and stark subtlety of late-era Johnny Cash" has created a beautifully primal work. Madman is deliberately simple in both arrangement and composition. It is soul music in the purest and most literal sense, hypnotic rhythms, warmly distorted guitars and Rowe's incredible voice recalling a time, real or imagined, when music and people seemed
distinctly more connected.
The sound of Madman is influenced, in large part, by the hypnotic guitars of Delta blues. The influence is most apparent on the album's second track "Shine My Diamond Ring" with its guitar and stomping bass drum. "Desiree" is a raucous deconstructed take on early disco, with a pulsating bass, Nile Rogers-like guitar picking and a looser than ever Rowe singing with absolute abandon. But there are still the trademark ballads that first gained Rowe attention on his debut, Magic, showcases for the astonishing voice and honest emotional songwriting that continues to garner Sean Rowe much deserved acclaim.1. Bo DiddleyFrom The Original Chess/Checker Masters In Glorious Mono
Faithful Reproduction Of The Original Artwork
Music historians have wasted so many perfectly good words trying to explain the significance of Bo Diddley. "Bo Diddley liberated the blues from the 12-bar form and melded it to an insistent, infectious rhumba beat," they bleat. "Diddley was the progenitor of all that was to come in the evolution of rock and roll," blah blah blah blah.
Listen: Why is eating a plateful of ribs and dripping all over your hands and clothes fun? BECAUSE IT JUST IS. Why is walking around with cotton candy in one hand and a blue, helium-filled balloon on a string in the other fun? BECAUSE IT JUST IS. Bo Diddley is fun BECAUSE HE JUST IS. Bo Diddley (the album) was rock and roll's Big Bang, dripping with sinew and grease and humor and understated swagger. The simplest ingredients - a guitar, a drum, and some maracas - were packed in a gunny sack and slung over the shoulder of some smiling guy with a slick process and a wild plaid jacket, who took it and ran headfirst into oncoming traffic. Reckless, yet crazy cool. He made it sound easy. Geniuses can do that.
No doctoral thesis will explain Bo Diddley, the man or "Bo Diddley," the album. You won't find the answer in some scholarly article called "The Epistomological Roots of 'Diddy Wah Diddy' or something like that, in your dog-eared copy of the Journal of the American Institute of Ethnomusicology.
Bo Diddley just is.
Bo Diddley. (the album) is not an option, it's mandatory. We'll be imposing fines on anyone who thinks otherwise, so best to pick up a copy if for no other reason than to avoid a big hassle later on. We're not kidding.1. Bo Diddley
