    Unknown Pleasures

Formed in 1977, Joy Division (guitarist Bernard Albrecht, bassist Peter Hook, drummer Stephen Morris, and vocalist Ian Curtis) helped usher in the Post-Punk movement with their haunting melodies and melancholy lyrics. By incorporating synthesizers into their music, they paved the way for an entire generation of bands who would soon follow in their footsteps. The band released two classic albums, 1979's Unknown Pleasures and 1980's Closer as well as several singles, before Curtis' suicide on the eve of their first American tour. Following Curtis' death, Albrecht (now Sumner), Hook, and Morris formed the band New Order, and would continue to record over the next twenty-five years.

It even looks like something classic, beyond its time or place of origin even as it was a clear product of both - one of Peter Saville's earliest and best designs, a transcription of a signal showing a star going nova, on a black embossed sleeve. If that were all Unknown Pleasures was, it wouldn't be discussed so much, but the ten songs inside, quite simply, are stone-cold landmarks, the whole album a monument to passion, energy, and cathartic despair. The quantum leap from the earliest thrashy singles to Unknown Pleasures can be heard through every note, with Martin Hannett's deservedly famous production - emphasizing space in the most revelatory way since the dawn of dub - as much a hallmark as the music itself. Songs fade in behind furtive noises of motion and activity, glass breaks with the force and clarity of doom, minimal keyboard lines add to an air of looming disaster - something, somehow, seems to wait or lurk beyond the edge of hearing. But even though this is Hannett's album as much as anyone's, the songs and performances are the true key. Sumner redefined heavy metal sludge as chilling feedback fear and explosive energy, Hook's instantly recognizable bass work at once warm and forbidding, Morris' drumming smacking through the speakers above all else. Curtis synthesizes and purifies every last impulse, his voice shot through with the desire first and foremost to connect, only connect - as Candidate plaintively states, I tried to get to you/you treat me like this. Pick any song, the nervous death dance of She's Lost Control, the harrowing call for release New Dawn Fades, all four members in perfect sync, the romance in hell of Shadowplay, Insight and its nervous drive towards some sort of apocalypse. All visceral, all emotional, all theatrical, all perfect - one of the best albums ever.

Joy Division rapidly evolved from their initial punk rock influences to develop a sound and style that made them one of the pioneers of the post-punk movement of the late 1970s. Their self-released 1978 debut EP, An Ideal for Living, drew the attention of the Manchester television personality Tony Wilson. Joy Division's debut album,Unknown Pleasures, was released in 1979 on Wilson's independent record label Factory Records, and drew critical acclaim from the British press. Despite the band's growing success, vocalist Ian Curtis was beset with depression and personal difficulties, including a dissolving marriage and his diagnosis of epilepsy. Curtis found it increasingly difficult to perform at live concerts, and often had seizures during performances.

Preston 28 February 1980 was recorded live at The Warehouse in Preston, England. The set was wrought with system failures: amps failed, instruments went in and out of key, at one point Ian Curtis exclaimed, ''I think everything is falling apart!'' Somehow, despite all of this, the band carried out an extraordinary performance. The roughness of the bass and the waning amps only add to the intensity and gloom, creating a performance that is just as haunting as it is unforgettable. Drastic Plastic Records is honored to have worked closely with Joy Division's management in order to present this seminal live recording in this beautiful, superbly mastered vinyl pressing, the only vinyl release currently available of this title to be officially sanctioned.

Love Will Tear Us Apart should have been the band's most shining moment, instead it became their tragic swan song. Released just a month after frontman Ian Curtis' heart-wrenching suicide, the song came to be seen as the unheeded warning of the impending tragedy. This special edition features all three versions of the song that transformed Joy Division from mere band into legend. In addition to the original single version, we have two versions remixed by American producers Don Gehman of John Mellencamp fame (the 'radio version') and Arthur Baker (who also produced a hit single for Africa Bambaataa around this same time). The remaining tracks include These Days (which appeared on the original Love Will Tear Us Apart single), along with Transmission (their debut single released in 1979) and Atmosphere (originally released as a France-only single) in 1980.

    Closer

Ranked 157/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

The band released two classic albums, 1979s UNKNOWN PLEASURES and 1980s CLOSER as well as several singles, before Curtis suicide on the eve of their first American tour. Following Curtis death, Albrecht (now Sumner), Hook, and Morris formed the band New Order, and would continue to record over the next twenty-five years.

If Unknown Pleasures was Joy Division at their most obsessively, carefully focused, ten songs yet of a piece, Closer was the sprawl, the chaotic explosion that went every direction at once. Who knows what the next path would have been had Curtis not chosen his end? But steer away from the rereading of his every lyric after that date, treat Closer as what everyone else thought it was at first simply the next album and Joy Division's power just seems to have grown. Hannett was still producing, but seems to have taken as many chances as the band itself throughout differing mixes, differing atmospheres, new twists and turns define the entirety of Closer, songs suddenly returned in chopped-up, crumpled form, ending on hiss and random notes. Opener Atrocity Exhibition was arguably the most fractured thing the band had yet recorded, Sumner's teethgrinding guitar and Morris' Can-on-speed drumming making for one heck of a strange start. Keyboards also took the fore more so than ever the drowned pianos underpinning Curtis' shadowy moan on The Eternal, the squirrelly lead synth on the energetic but scared-out-of-its-wits Isolation, and above all else Decades, the album ender of album enders. A long, slow crawl down and out, Curtis' portrait of lost youth inevitably applied to himself soon after, its sepulchral string-synths are practically a requiem. Songs like Heart and Soul and especially the jaw-dropping, wrenching Twenty Four Hours, as perfect a demonstration of the tension/release or soft/loud approach as will ever be heard, simply intensify the experience. Joy Division was at the height of their powers on Closer, equaling and arguably bettering the astonishing Unknown Pleasures, that's how accomplished the four members were. Rock, however defined, rarely seems and sounds so important, so vital, and so impossible to resist or ignore as here.

    Joy Division: Box Set

Released in a Limited Edition of only 3,000 copies worldwide, this 180-Gram virgin vinyl, four-disc JOY DIVISION BOX SET contains new pressings of the band's two seminal studio albums - UNKNOWN PLEASURES ('79) and CLOSER ('80) - and the 1981 two-disc rarities compilation STILL.

JOY DIVISION: BOX SET allows you to experience these pioneering albums the way they were heard originally - on sonically rich vinyl LPs. The three titles - a total of four LPS - come housed in an elegant cloth-covered box designed by U.K. artist Peter Saville, who created the distinctive artwork and packaging on the original issues of these classic releases. Once the 3,000 copies sell out, the box will not be reproduced.

Joy Division's 1979 debut UNKNOWN PLEASURES is a landmark album that established the band as principal architects and ultimate icons of the post-punk movement and the U.K. Manchester scene of the late '70s. UNKNOWN PLEASURES' ten classic songs resonate with the atmospheric textures and deep sonic spaces of Martin Hannett's production. Highlights include Insight, Disorder, New Dawn Fades and She's Lost Control. The latter song is the inspiration for the title of the 2007 film Control, the acclaimed Anton Corbijn-directed feature chronicling the life and times of Joy Division's lead singer and principal songwriter, the late Ian Curtis.

Joy Division's 1980 follow-up CLOSER, another seminal post-punk masterpiece, ranks #157 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time. Musically and lyrically driven by the prevailing despair of Ian Curtis - who killed himself only months after the LP was released - CLOSER was also produced by Martin Hannett, who weaves sprawling emotional chaos and shifting atmospheres and textures together into an enormously powerful ten-song tour de force. Stand-outs include Heart And Soul, Isolation, Eternal, Decades and the wrenching Twenty Four Hours.

The compilation STILL came out in late 1981, over a year after Curtis' death. Comprised of twenty studio outtakes, b-sides, live cuts and other rarities, all the tracks were previously unissued at the time of STILL's original release except for Glass and Dead Souls, both compelling studio recordings from 1978 and 1979, respectively. STILL also presents material from Joy Division's last-ever concert, recorded at Birmingham University in May 1980 including the only time they performed Ceremony live (the song would later become a New Order single). Another track captured at Birmingham is Shadowplay, a selection covered in 2007 by The Killers for the soundtrack for the film Control. Other highlights include a live cover of The Velvet Underground's Sister Ray and a 1979 studio recording of Something Must Break.

Joy Division formed in Manchester, England in 1977, and had an immense and profound impact on contemporary music in a very brief time together. They recorded only two full-length studio albums, UNKNOWN PLEASURES and CLOSER, prior to lead singer Ian Curtis' 1980 suicide, just before the single Love Will Tear Us Apart became their breakthrough hit. The remaining members - guitarist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook and drummer Stephen Morris - disbanded Joy Division after Curtis' death, and re-formed as New Order.

Despite the title, this is the debut album from Manchester's
Durutti Column, originally released on the legendary
Factory Records label in 1980. This album is a
collaboration between guitarist, and the only permanent
member of the band, Vini Reilly and producer/keyboard
player Martin Hannett (Joy Division, Buzzcocks). Though
lumped in with the post-punk movement, The Durutti
Column's debut is hardly reminiscent of what that term
brings to mind. The Return Of The Durutti Column is a
collection of guitar based instrumentals melding rock, folk, classical, electronica and
    the avant-garde. Absolutely stunning.

    Turn On The Bright Lights

Interpol's classic debut album now available on low cost vinyl.

Interpol: Carlos D., Daniel Kessler, Paul Banks, Samuel Fogarino. To make music marked distinctly of a specific period that's somehow so compelling as to be timeless is no mean feat. Interpol initially sounds as if they must have been roaming about Manchester as the 1970s screamed to a close, yet they emerged across the ocean in New York City some two decades-plus later. Combining the insistent drone of Joy Division with the dreamy melodies of the Chameleons, the fire of Mission of Burma, and an occasional jagged edge a la The Fall, the foursome inconceivably manage to defy anachronism on their debut full-length TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS. Just how they do it is indefinable, perhaps it's just a trick of the light, or the life that breathes gloomily, radiantly throughout, but it's undeniable. Vocals which fall somewhere between Ian Curtis's plaintive, edge-of-oblivion wail and the winking, laconic drawl of James's Tim Booth, ripping uncompromisingly through unpredictable, unforgettable lamentations from the reflective (NYC) to the imploring (PDA). When the darkly etched, implosive, mournful lyrics poke out as they do on the unrelenting Obstacle 1 (she puts the weights into my little heart and she gets in my room and she tears it apart), the hook is set for an important debut by a band that portends to be around a while.

The second Durutti Column album, originally released on

producer Martin Hannett (Joy Division, Buzzcocks) and
the addition of drummer Bruce Mitchell, who would remain
a longtime collaborator with chief member, guitarist Vini
Reilly. LC is as powerful as the debut, a fantastic
collection of guitar excursions that transcend genre. This
is also the first album to feature Reilly's speak-sing vocal style on a number of songs
(including The Missing Boy a tribute to the recently deceased leader of Joy Division,
    Ian Curtis). Another stellar album.

Creative Adult comes from the diverse musical breeding ground of California's
North Bay Punk scene. The band's sonic blast careens between the harsh, noisy

acid trip through 80s west coast punk. Engineered and produced by Efrim

    The Idiot (White/Clear)

    White-Clear Colored Vinyl

Originally released in 1977, this was the first album Iggy Pop made after the dissolution of the Stooges, several jailings and a self-imposed stay in a mental institution. Produced by David Bowie, and including music written almost entirely by him, this is Iggy's most introspective and heavy work. Much more mechanical than the sleazy proto-punk of the Stooges, The Idiot was a huge influence on the post-punk sound of folks like Joy Division and Magazine. An absolute classic on white - clear vinyl.

Tammar pulls off a pretty incredible trick with each and every one of its post-punk anthems, probably something of which the band doesn't take much note. They mine the classic sounds of paranoia, malaise and misanthropy (Joy Division, The Velvet Underground, The Fall and early '90s alt-rock), and fill it all with so much exuberance and joy of playing that each song becomes a triumph over anxiety and ennui. Visits finds each of the band's members stepping outside of themselves, but not in a snake-poison-ingesting, flopping-on-the-floor sense. It's something else, something full of wonder.

    Temporary Room

Stagnant Pools are Bryan and Douglass Enas, two brothers (21 and 22) from Bloomington, Indiana. With just one guitar and a drum kit, they make music which the Chicago Reader describes as "drone-heavy, slate-gray art-rock that should appeal to fans of Disappears, Joy Division, and Sonic Youth records from back when they were still actually scary."

After a couple of DIY releases, the sibling duo spent one day in the studio recording their debut full-length Temporary Room. With a tour van as a recent graduation present, and shows under their belt with EMA and labelmates Japandroids, they're releasing Temporary Room and then hitting the road. 180 gram vinyl pressing.

Buried Under A World Of Roses

Death Of Lovers is a new band featuring current members of Whirr and Nothing, formed from a bond members made while touring together in 2013.

Although Death Of Lovers carries qualities of members previously applauded efforts, they carry a shimmer and fuzz all their own. Dreary vocals, slow motion melody, and plodding percussion swirl together to create a crushingly depressing atmosphere. Kicking up the dust of their prominent influences (Joy Division, The Cure, etc) as they explore the fractured depths the of their uniquely haunting sound. A beautifully addictive introduction to their greatness to come.

"Musically, the band has clearly found inspiration from the likes of Joy
Division, Disappears, and The Jesus and Mary Chain, with an emphasis
on heavy waves of drone and lots of visceral fuzz to create a slate-gray
soundscape that's as frightening as it is aggressive."
    - Consequence of Sound

"Something tells me Stagnant Pools are going to end up much more
than Bloomington big." - Chicago Reader
"The band sounds ready to escape something here, as a bucking rhythm
and Strokes-like melody peeks through a hovering coal-dust cloud of
distorted guitar sustain and reverb" - Pitchfork

Following the release of their debut full-length Temporary Room,
Stagnant Pools embarked on several high profile tours supporting
the likes of David Bazan, Maximo Park, Cymbals Eat Guitars, and
    more.

All this time spent on the road gave the Indianapolis-based duo
a fresh perspective on their strengths and weaknesses as a band,
feedback that brothers Bryan and Douglass Enas took to heart
while spending last year working on new material.

As a result, Stagnant Pools' sophomore release Geist (which was
recorded and mixed directly to tape with Hum singer/guitarist
Matt Talbott) finds the pair refining and expanding on a shoegaze-meets-noise pop sound that has drawn comparisons to Joy
Division, Sonic Youth, and The Strokes.

    Dialogues

Vinyl version of the fourth full-length from Manchester-inspired Russian indie rock band Motorama.

Following the critically acclaimed third album 'Poverty', 'Dialogues' is the new full-length of the Manchester-inspired indie rock band Motorama. Brilliantly catchy and addictive songs that remains sunner despite Vlad's deep and dark voice.

Their aesthetic is rooted in early's 80s independent music, and suggests the moment when Joy Division morphed into New Order, the early recordings of The Smiths or even a more desolate Interpol. - Q

Uncannily, for a band from a southern port near the Ukraine border, Motorama resemble a bunch of New Yorkers emulating the sound of 80s Manchester. It would be preposterous if the result didn't sound so sublime. - BBC 6

    I See You

I See You is marked by a tonal shift to something close to pure, crisp pop structure, adorned by unusual crescendos that echo a dexterous DJ inching their dancer toward climax without ever quite lifting the house lights. Its lyric sheet moves from the danger and hopelessness of love to its deliciousness and rapture; a move into a more outward looking proposition.

I See You is recognizably still The xx but is now powered by the voluble ambition of its three perfect counterweights to one another starting to not just realize but harness their full potential. You might even want to think of the decisive move from Joy Division to New Order here, too.

When they take their plum festival slots in 2017, armed with the ten most robust songs of their career, The xx should prick the skin and touch gently the shoulder of an audience reaching to the back of the field.
