    Who Me?

"In contrast to his shambolic band's [the Beets] crude punkish impressions, the man's solo material hews more acoustic and bare, showcasing his warm voice and knack for, yes, poetry, that feels beamed in from a halcyon era." - Spin

Over ten years ago, a teenage Juan Wauters came to New York from Uruguay. Quickly after his arrival to the Big Apple, he turned to music to take control of the loneliness that came with his new surroundings. However, his isolation didn't last long though and, in the Queen's neighborhood Jackson Heights, he formed The Beets with new friends, garnering a reputation that allowed him to record three albums and tour the United States extensively. As the band began to slow down in 2012, Juan had more to say and he kept
going on his own with his debut solo album, N.A.P. North American Poetry, released on Captured Tracks in 2014.

Who Me? is the next chapter in the ongoing story of Juan Wauters. Whereas his debut solo record was recorded casually over the course of one year, his new album was crafted in under two weeks at Future Apple Tree in Rock Island, Illinois. Inspired by both the arrangements of Uruguayan songwriter Jaime Roos and the production of American master Dr. Dre, this collection of songs presents his continued approach to existential questioning through pop music. Tracks like "She Might Get Shot" and "I Was Well," which may seem like wisdom addressed to the listener, are in fact part of Juan's reciprocal process of self-actualization through songwriting and performing. Bringing new sounds to his repertoire, "This Is I" and "Through That Red" add a spiritual tone with ethereal string arrangements. Juan's voice - which has risen to the forefront of his music since his first recordings with The Beets - intensifies with added nuance. This year Juan Wauters will continue to tour the world in support of his second solo record.

    After Midnight - Bonus Tracks

In this felicitous blending of Nat King Cole's supreme talents as jazz pianist and vocalist with small combos featuring fellow jazz alumni, classic pop and jazz met in a wildly successful brew. A combination of new and familiar songs are featured, including fresh recordings of classic hits like Route 66. Musicians include Harry Sweets Edison, Juan Tizol, Lee Young, Stuff Smith and Willie Smith augmenting his famous Trio. In addition to the full original album, five additional tracks and one alternate take from the original sessions are included in this release. Mellow, classy, focused and vibrant, After Midnight was a hit and an instant classic upon its release in 1956 and remains a gem to treasure today.

Footwork, "-the very word indicates a movement of the feet that is "work" (as in an effort to achieve). Its joyous social party nature sits within a lineage of African American history that includes the infamous Soul Train dance tunnel and Hip Hop dance circles. However, as Footwork continues to become more popular, we should not forget that at its essence it is a highly evolved battle form. This is the central theme one feels listening to the stunning "Fingers, Bank Pads & Shoe Prints," the second album from RP Boo, the man credited with inventing the Footwork genre with a 1997 track "Baby Come On" (recently re-released on the Planet Mu EP "Classics Vol. 1"). RP Boo is to Footwork what Juan Atkins is to Techno, a source point for a busting out of innovative ideas and new directions.

Felix Beloy: Baila Mi Son (Pure Pleasure)

Rich and rhythmic, sparkling and seductive, Felix Baloy's voice marks him as one of Cuba's very finest soneros. This magnificent performance showcases a true artist at the peak of his profession, backed by the thrilling arrangements of Juan de Marcos and the peerless Afro Cuban All Stars.

Felix Baloy has been singing for more than 40 years which means he has waited a long time to make his first solo album. One of Cuba's outstanding soneros with a unique timbre, the opportunity came about after he met Tumi Music founder Mo Fini in Havana in 1995 when Baloy sang on the label's splendid four CD set Las Leyendas de la Musica Cubana as part of the Cuban All Stars with Orquesta Amèrica.

There's an absolute joy about this record, and Baloy proves himself worthy of all the praise that's been heaped on him in Cuba, as capable of gliding through the cha cha of Van a Bailar el Cha Cha Cha, with its prim strings, as the rawer bolero of El Mal de la Hipocresia. The arrangements frame his voice wonderfully, too, as on the rich bolero cha of Los Es Todo Tu Amor, with its glistening flute solo. Baloy does himself proud, and Gonzalez gives him a band to remember behind him, some crystal clear production, and songs any singer would love to sing. Nigh on perfect.

    • Juan de Marcos Gonzalez (director)

    • Felix Baloy (vocal)

    • Teresa Garcia Caturla (vocal)

    • Javier Zalba (bassoon)

    • Ricardo Munoz (bass)

Recording: 2000 in ICAIC Studios and DM Ahora Studios, Havana, Cuba, by Alain Martinez de la Torre

    Production: Juan de Marcos Gonzalez

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

What Is The Meaning Of What (Awaiting Repress)

What Is The Meaning Of What is the third album from New York City psych-dance-rock stalwarts, Turing Machine, their first since the critically acclaimed Zwei was released on Frenchkiss Records way back in 2004. The extended hiatus was largely due to its members other projects, most notably drummer Jerry Fuchs' relentless rotation in virtually every live band within stone's throw of the DFA orbit, including but not limited to LCD Soundsystem, Maserati, Holy Ghost!, The Juan Maclean, !!!, MSTRKRFT and Massive Attack.

Shortly after Turing Machine began to work on what would become What Is The Meaning Of What, Fuchs tragically passed away. In his absence, guitarist Justin Chearno and bassist Scott DeSimon spent the better part of a year completing the album, with a little help from a plethora of friends, including Disappears vocalist Brian Case, and a host of musicians from the DFA roster, including Andrew Raposo and Caito Sanchez (both of Midnight Magic), Abe Seiferth, DJ McNany, and Pat Mahoney (LCD Soundsystem).

What Is The Meaning Of What boasts an increased focus on the dance floor while maintaining the adrenalin-fueled psychedelic post-punk fetishism that is the heart of Turing Machine. Propelled by Fuchs' unrelenting grooves and bubbling with layer upon layer of hypnotic riffs and driving synths, the album locks in and refuses to let go for its 40-minute duration.

    Live At Carnegie Hall

This is a dazzling recital, taped live at Carnegie Hall in November 2003--complete with applause. Lang Lang's virtuosity is almost frightening: the Liszt Reminiscenses du Don Juan is a showpiece when played normally. Here, Lang plays it to its extremes, with soft passages amazingly soft and subtly delineated and the bigger moments heaven-thundering. And it is played so fast, and so accurately (a cascade of notes in mid-La ci darem la mano sounds like a waterfall), that it leaves the listener breathless--surely just what Liszt wanted. In a Haydn sonata, Lang's classical line is impeccable, but he's not afraid to shine through the music and embellish occasionally. The Schumann Traumerei is suitably dreamy and hushed; Schubert's Wanderer Fantasy, a real crowd-pleaser, is just that--beautifully played, familiar yet fresh sounding. And an encore, with Lang's father playing a two-string fiddle called the erhu, is a fascinating look into Eastern music. There's more and it's stunning--and highly recommended for all admirers of great piano playing. --Robert Levine

Föllakzoid began seven years ago as a trance experience between childhood
friends Diego, Juan Pablo, and Domingo from Santiago, Chile. Heavily informed
by the heritage of the ancient music of the Andes, the band has learned to integrate
this influence with contemporary sounds of their times, creating a rich yet
    minimal atmosphere.

For III, the band wanted to expand their sound while building an atmosphere
with mainly monochords and reiteration. After recording and mixing the album
on their own at their studio at BYM Records, they partnered with German electronic
maestro Atom TM to flesh out the album's synth parts. Most of the sounds
he provided were atonal electronic sounds, aiming for concrete frequencies and
sampled organic glitches. (The Korg synthesizer Atom TM plays on this record
was used by Kraftwerk on a tour during the '80s and given to him by Florian
    Schneider.)

III is a four-part minimal sound voyage in which you can hear Föllakzoid's musical
language developing into something more upbeat, obscure, and sharp, yet
even simpler in terms of elements. During the past year, the band played more
than 80 gigs, including at Primavera Sound Festival (both Porto and Barcelona),
ATP Festival in the UK, Musique Volantes in Lyon, and Lollapalooza Chile. The
shows for III, including a confirmed set at Austin Psych Fest in May, should
spread the band's fog-enshrouded gospel to an even wider audience.

    Parts Primitive

"Parts Primitive" is the debut album from London-based band Primitive Parts; consisting of Sauna Youth, Monotony and Male Bonding alumni Lindsay Corstorphine (guitar / voice) Kevin Hendrick (guitar) and Robin Christian (drums). After signing to Trouble in Mind earlier this year they immediately bought a Tascam 388 multitrack tape device & set to record their debut. "Parts Primitive" consists of ten close-knit and succinct songs that aim to evoke a sonic space that could be an imagined 1970s. 'Miracle Skin', 'Signal', 'Rented Housing' and 'Troubles' are influenced equally by the dynamic Australian garage rock of The UV Race, Eddy Current Suppression Ring and Total Control as they are by the pop sensibilities and British charm of early Eno, The Kinks and Blur. Parts Primitive was recorded by the band directly onto two 7 reels of quarter inch tape, mixed by Mark Jasper at Soundsavers and mastered by Mikey Young overseas. Primitive Parts have shared stages with Twerps, Franz Ferdinand, The Homosexuals and Juan Wauters. Having recently bought a car, they are due to embark on a full UK tour in Autumn.

Chocolat is the 2000 British-American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Lasse Hallström (The Cider House Rules) starring Juliette Binoche, Judi Dench and Johnny Depp. The movie was adapted from the novel written by Joan Harris, and is about a woman and her daughter opening a chocolate shop - with Sunday hours - across the street from the local church in a small French village.

The music is composed by Rachel Portman and the soundtrack also includes Minor Swing from Django Reinhardt/StÉphane Grappelli and the 1936 jazz standard Caravan from Duke Ellington and Juan Tizol.

Rachel Portman has written over 100 music scores for film, television and theatre. She was also the first female composer to win an Academy Award in the category of Best Musical or Comedy Score for Emma in 1996 and in 2015 she received the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition for the HBO TV series Bessie.

    After Midnight (Pure Pleasure) (Discontinued)

Nat 'King' Cole's music is the perfect combination of romantic charm and musical invention. Cole is renowned for his big production numbers and pop hits such as Stardust, but he was also an accomplished and unique jazz pianist and excelled in a small-group setting. After Midnight's album cover states that this is a 'trio' release. However, Cole is actually paired up with his trio plus five guest soloists (saxophone, trombone, trumpet, percussion, and violin). The dubious credits don't matter much though. This is precious music and, without a doubt, one of Cole's best records. Included here are wonderful and intimate renditions of Cole favorites Sweet Lorraine, (Get Your Kicks on) Route 66, and many others. Trombonist Juan Tizol performs a beautiful version of his Afro-Cuban tune Caravan, and Cole and violinist Stuff Smith trade some hot licks on the up-tempo I Know That You Know. For anybody looking to understand the depth and breadth of Cole's jazz roots, this disc is an excellent point of departure.

    Musicians:

    • Nat 'King' Cole (piano, vocal)

    • Willie Smith (alto saxophone)

    • Harry 'Sweets' Edison (trumpet)

    • John Collins (guitar)

    • Charlie Harris (bass)

    • Stuff Smith (violin)

    • Lee Young (drums)

    • Jack Costanza (conga, bongo)

    Call It What It Is

Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals have reunited for Call It What It Is, their first record together in nine years.

Call It What It Is is an incisive, bold, poetic statement that could only come from these long-time musical partners, one of popular music's most essential, cohesive and dynamic ensembles. The standout title track showcases Harper's unmatched ability to blend the personal and political. Invoking the names of Trayvon Martin, Ezell Ford, and Michael Brown over an agitated blues riff, Harper cuts to the quick: "There's good cops / bad cops / white cops / black cops / call it what it is / Murder." The genre-spanning collection contains many highlights including the sun-kissed groove of Shine and the album's swaggering lead track When Sex Was Dirty.

It had been seven years since Ben Harper last played a show with the Innocent Criminals, so when the time came to reunite for a live tour in 2015, the band-percussionist Leon Mobley, bassist Juan Nelson, drummer Oliver Charles, keyboardist Jason Yates, and guitarist Michael Ward-quickly discovered that Harper had more in mind than simply revisiting the group's prodigious song catalogue. In fact, Harper had been quietly amassing material for a new record and the first recording sessions were scheduled to begin even before the rehearsals for their triumphant four-night sold-out reunion run at the Fillmore in San Francisco last March.

"I thought we would be more energized and revitalized by thinking outside the box and starting with new material in the studio before we dug into the old stuff," said Harper of the reunion album. "It was meant to be a signpost that we're here to forge new ground musically and personally."

    Limits Of Desire

Limits of Desire is SmallBlack's most accomplished album yet. It's a crystalline realization of a sound they've
been building toward since their self-titled EP in 2009. Now a full-time four piece, Josh Hayden Kolenik
(keys, vocals), Ryan Heyner (guitar, keys, vocals), Juan Pieczanski (bass, guitar) and Jeff Curtin (drums,
percussion), the band have moved way beyond the hazy home recorded sound of their previous releases
toward a full-fledged, but still self-produced, clear approach. Where 2010's New Chain was a lesson in
maximalist pop, Limits of Desirefindsthe band trimming theirsound to the essentials, yet hitting new and
unexpected heightswith the addition of live drums, electric guitar and trumpet to the existing Small Black
    palette.

Tonally the songs sweep and glide over lush keys, bolstered by lyrics that illustrate the semi-abstract
moments of lost opportunities and misread signs, hinted at by the coverimage. The title trackwhirlssoftly,
and channels luminaries Tears for Fears and The Blue Nile, anchored by Pieczanski's punchy bass as
Kolenik sings: "Otherlives droned/ farfrom the grasswhere Ilay/ each eye stared out the oppositeway."As
much as the record is about looking for deeper connections, it's also about avoiding real life, if only for a
moment-getting out of your own head just long enough to calm down and find perspective.
"Free At Dawn" and "No Stranger" do what fans have come to love Small Black for, only better. They're
smart pop bangerstingedwith a specific brand of melancholy thatslowly build to night-affirming climaxes.

While Breathless" ups the tempo, over synth stabs, with lyrics that tackle apathy and uncertainty with
catchy grace: "I'm standing in tomorrow'sway/ future'sfine/least itseems okay." It paints a concise portrait
of a generation strugglingwith unlimited freedom and malaise.
The band builds on a rich history of synth pop by making a thoroughly modern album, on both the front
and back end. One that seeks out cohesion, connection and calm in a world that won't sit still. Limits of
Desire doesn't attempt to provide any solutions, but coming to terms with not finding the answers feels
    infinitely more fruitful.

Out Of The Cellar (Awaiting Repress)

First Time Audiophile Vinyl Release Of This 3X Platinum Metal Classic!

Mastered By Joe Reagoso At Friday Music And Capitol Mastering, Hollywood From The Original Atlantic Records Tapes

Ratt have been making very loud and credible heavy metal rock albums now for over three decades. The San Diego quintet built a local club following throughout the early eighties and flourished into a mega-platinum recording act for Atlantic Records with their debut smash recording Out of the Cellar.
The Out of the Cellar album features 10 hard hitting rock masterworks like their top charting hit singles Round and Round, Back for More and Wanted Man as well as a plethora of metal radio classics like The Morning After, She Wants Money, In Your Direction and the ever popular metal album closer Scene of the Crime.

Out of the Cellar was also a home run for their huge video audience, as Round and Round was an MTV smash
video hit and featured the antics of Stephen Pearcy's famous uncle the late great Milton Berle.
Featuring the dynamic vocals of Stephen Pearcy, the dual guitar attack of Warren DeMartini and Robbin Crosby, the blistering bass of Juan Croucier and the powerful drum work of Bobby Blotzer, Ratt's Out of the Cellar album is still the go to choice for many heavy metal fans as the band continues to be a major force in the music industry.

When Out of the Cellar was released in 1984, the compact disc and cassette were the dominant media of the day, as the original rare vinyl album release went on to become a highly priced collector's item chasing major bucks for a mint copy.

Relayer Friday Music is very pleased to announce another heavy metal classic with the debut top five, multimillion selling album Out of the Cellar by Ratt. Mastered from the original Atlantic Records tapes by Joe "Heavy Metal Kid" Reagoso (Deep Purple/Alice Cooper/UFO), this first time audiophile vinyl release will be one of the most anticipated
heavy metal audiophile releases this year.

    The Power Out

Back In Print Due To Popular Demand!

Electrelane's second album, The Power Out, is also their debut for the esteemed, arty British label Too Pure, the perfect home for a band that resembles so many of the imprint's other acts. The similarities appear early on, with the Stereolab-eqsue motorik and French vocals that drive Gone Under Sea, the wobbly-yet-charming singing on Birds that recalls Pram's Rosie Cuckston, and the intricate interplay of guitars and keyboards on every track that bring to mind th' Faith Healers (and their later incarnation, Quickspace). But these similarities are far from derivative; instead, on The Power Out, Electrelane feel like they're in the tradition of these other messy, angular, decidedly British art-punk bands, so much so that it's hard to imagine the band on any other label (with all due respect to Mr. Lady, who released Electrelane's debut, Rock It to the Moon). But even though the group perfectly defines the way that so many British art-school bands have sounded since the late '70s, in Electrelane's hands it still seems fresh.

The Power Out also seems fresher than Rock It to the Moon, perhaps because, paradoxically, it's more focused than their debut. That's a relative term, though; the noodly, jam-based feel that dominated Rock It to the Moon is still here, particularly on The Power Out's more rock-based songs such as Take the Bit Between Your Teeth and the closing instrumentals, Only One Thing Is Needed and You Make Me Weak at the Knees. But overall, the songs are more concise here, giving songs like On Parade and the lovely Enter Laughing an immediate, if not exactly poppy, feel.

The band finds different ways to channel the ambitions it so boldly displayed on Rock It to the Moon: Oh Sombra! is an eerie, passionate song fashioned from a sonnet from Spanish poet Juan Boscan, and This Deed borrows a line from Nietzsche to fit its appropriately dramatic air. Most striking of all is The Valleys, a choral rock piece that features Chicago A Cappella and Verity Sussman's arresting vocals, and attains a ceremonial, spiritual grandeur that hasn't been seen in many rock records save the Microphones' Mount Eerie. The Power Out manages to be unique without being a radical departure, and it augurs more good things for Electrelane's stint with Too Pure.

    Homesick

Before digging into the steely, handcrafted technoisms of Homesick, you need to
know a few things about Charles Du , the Bay Area artist behind Matrixxman.
Perhaps most importantly, he is a dedicated futurist-quick to name Google's
director of engineering, Ray Kurzweil, as a major personal inspiration, and prone to
contemplating artificial intelligence and a true post-corporeal reality. He's also a
voracious information junkie, soaking up government conspiracies and
contemporary science-fiction like a proper X-Files fanatic. These cultural reference
points are as integral to the background of Homesick as Detroit, Chicago, and
Berlin's musical legacies. Across the record's versatile tracklist, Matrixxman uses
the language of machines and dancefloors like a hungry pulp novelist, weaving
together his divergent narratives and characters under one sprawling dystopian
    sky.

If you listened to house and techno in 2014, you've undoubtedly heard the name
Matrixxman. The guy has been on a prolific tear since debuting his project in 2013,
having issued no fewer than 12 cold-ass futuristic releases and taken his
genre-blurring DJ sets around the world in under two years. But his story reaches
much further into the past: back to being a drum & bass-obsessed teenager in the
late '90s, back to when Du 's best friend changed his life with a Juan Atkins mix
CD in 2001, back to producing for hotly tipped MCs like Le1f, Ty Dolla Sign, and YG.
Matrixxman is already a venerable pro with workmanlike constitution, to say the
least, and yet his debut album has only just materialized.

My obsession with the darker sides of humanity's exploits gone awry is secondary
to the more important matter at heart: evolutionary transcendence, Matrixxman
explains. And his focus on cybernetic themes shines through the music. Emergent
AI, interplanetary travel, neuroenhancement drugs, incredible opulence
juxtaposed with abject poverty, leaving physical form and existing as data-Homesick
distills the concepts into thick acid lines, brawny 909 patterns, tonal contrasts,
dynamic aesthetics, and viscous pads steeped in digital ephemera. It begins with
Necronomicon, a massive black cloud of noxious ambience looming over our
story, and ends on the astral mysticism of Earth Like Conditions. Yes, there is an
arc built into Homesick, and the sci-fi epic it illustrates seizes your undivided
    attention.

Even the tracklist speaks volumes to the record's music and narrative-from the
enhanced motorik systems of Augmented and Network Failure's cognitive
dissonance, to the dark hedonism in Opium Den and the drum machine violence
that drives Switchblade. As Matrixxman says himself, The titles correlate to
distinct, separate scenes. And those visuals just about come alive on tracks like
Packard Plant-a whirring, windswept homage to the desolate Detroit
landmark-or the album's haunted and distant centerpiece, Annika's Theme. Du
is quick to share Annika's identity: She's an incredibly gifted neuroscientist,
pursuing cutting-edge research in fields that will have a profound impact on
humanity. But what exactly she accomplishes and where she goes is unexplained.
Homesick outlines the cues needed to follow along, careful to leave room for us to
    fill in the details.

Matrixxman uses his debut album to evoke visions of a not-too-distant-future with
music made both for the dancefloor and the early morning zone-outs that follow.
These are the real world applications of Homesick, though Du comes to it all from
an entirely di erent mindset. We will have the technological capability to fully
map out a human brain in its entirety within 30 years, he starts. The implications
of such a possibility are deep and far reaching. We will be crossing a rubicon
towards a new phase in human consciousness. I am one person that is prepared to
take that step. Once you emerge on the other side of Homesick, it seems possible
    that Matrixxman already has.

    Brotherhood Of The Snake

The forbearers of thrash resemble a Lovecraftian brotherhood. They're the elder gods who set everything in motion for generations to imitate, while still ruling the roost from on high. Testament stand proudly among the same vanguard that boasted "The Big 4" and beyond.

For over three decades, the Bay Area quintet-Chuck Billy [vocals], Eric Peterson [guitar], Alex Skolnick [guitar], Steve DiGiorgio [bass], and Gene Hoglan [drums]-has consistently delivered unadulterated, unbridled, and unbreakable metal in its purest form without compromise or any signs of slowing down. Over the course of seminal releases ranging from The Legacy and Practice What You Preach to The Gathering and The Formation of Damnation, which won "Best Album" at Metal Hammer's 2008 Golden Gods Awards, the group's sales exceeded 14 million worldwide with 2 million in the U.S. alone. Most recently, 2012's critically praised Dark Roots of Earth assaulted the charts, moving over 20,000 first-week copies and seizing #12 on the Billboard Top 200, the band's highest U.S. chart bow ever. However, in 2016, Testament returns with more teeth than ever on Brotherhood of the Snake [Nuclear Blast]. "The first record is always classic because you form the band, you're totally into it, you go through the club scene, find yourself, and write your initial album over multiple years," explains Eric. "Then, you get signed and end up in a cycle. We took some time to do Brotherhood of the Snake, and it shows. Different influences came in. Normally, there are a few straight ahead thrash songs. We haven't had this many thrash tracks since The Legacy. It's a new era."

"I view Testament like I did when we started," adds Chuck. "I've been fortunate to be doing this for over 30 years. It means a lot. We're just going to continue doing what we do." Following a whirlwind of touring in support of Dark Roots of Earth, the guys began individually writing in late 2013. In between a rigorous tour schedule, new music organically assembled. During the spring of 2016, they hit the studio with Juan Urteaga [Machine Head, Exodus] and quickly cut the album's 10 tracks.

"Having separate periods to write set it apart," Eric continues. "Everybody played hard. Chuck really surprised me and belted out stuff that's more melodic over the heavy speed metal riffs. It blended really well together." "It does flow," Chuck agrees. "There's a lot of musicianship going on there, and I was finding hooks in the moment. I was able to feel it and just go."

The record commences on a deadly note with the title track. A whiplash-inducing riff catapults Chuck's unmistakable growl forward before snapping into mind-numbing leads. It's a brutal breakneck basher on par with the band's best. "It was actually one of the first songs we put together," says the singer. "Once we heard it mixed, we were all like, 'Wow, we have the direction we're going in. It's really heavy.'"

Elsewhere on the record, "The Pale King" gallops ahead on an apocalyptic barrage of drums and guitars before culminating on an unshakable chant. "It was really natural," smiles Eric. "It has that old school vibe, but this new energy to it. It never lets up. I love that!" Brotherhood of the Snake concludes on the crushing yet cinematic "The Number Game," which evinces Chuck's knack for a vivid lyrical story.

"I actually wrote it with Steve 'Zetro' Souza," he recalls. "I had that chorus, and it was one of those things where it had to be repeated. It's 14 days and 14 nights where this guy's on a killing spree. He does a countdown, and your life is based on the number you are. It was trip."

A fascinating concept rears its head during many of Brotherhood of the Snake's key moments, nodding to the mythical race from which the record it shares a name. "There's a connection between the alien world and religion, and the whole storyline came from it," explains Chuck. "There's a story of a Sumerian race 6,000 years ago that went on crusades to basically dethrone religions. The earth was basically the place where their leader, The Pale King, set people to be imprisoned and mine for gold. It got the ball rolling."

Ultimately, this Brotherhood remains as powerful as ever. "If a Testament fan knows our history or has followed our last couple of records, they'll hear the progression," the front man leaves off. "Everything is right there and in-your-face. That's the way it should be with us."
