Born October 7, 1944, and hailing from California, Judith
Lynn Sill was an American singer-songwriter who learned
how to play piano in her father's Oakland bar. She met,
befriended and started opening shows for Graham Nash
and David Crosby in the mid-to-late 1960s.

After a bit of interest from Atlantic Records, David Geffen
offered Judee a contract and she became the first artist to
sign with his then-fledgling Asylum label. During her early
days at Asylum, she sold her song "Lady-O" to the Turtles and
was featured on the cover of Rolling Stone. Graham Nash
produced her first single, "Jesus Was A Cross Maker," off her
self-titled debut album which was released on September
15, 1971 and engineered by Henry Lewy (Joni Mitchell). The
song was inspired by her romance with singer-songwriter
JD Souther, who later wrote the song "Something In the
Dark" about her. The album featured Sill's voice in multiple
overdubs, often in a four-part chorale or fugue. Her debut
album was not a commercial success, despite good reviews.
Sill took over orchestration and arrangements for her
second album, Heart Food, which was released in March
of 1973. The album was critically acclaimed but sold poorly
and ended her association with Asylum and David Geffen.

Judee continued to write songs and in 1974 began to record
new material planned for a third album that was never
finished. Sill continued to struggle with drug addiction
and health problems, eventually dropping out of the music
scene completely. Judee tragically died of a drug overdose
on November 23, 1979, at her apartment in North Hollywood.

Sill's music was not commercially viable at the time but
was incredibly influential as well as ground-breaking and
many notable songwriters such as Andy Partridge, Liz Phair,
Warren Zevon and Shawn Colvin have been fans of her work.
Her songs have been covered by the Hollies, Cass Elliott,
Warren Zevon, Beth Orton, Bill Callahan, Bonnie Prince Billy,
Ron Sexsmith, The Fruit Bats and many more.

Judee Sill is one of rock's more interesting and lesser-known stories. Because of her troubled family history she was looking for an escape of reality. After surviving a heroin addiction and a brief stint as a bank robber, Sill turned her rather intense passions to music. She released two albums and partially completed a third album before her death in 1979.

Sill's music was complex, elegantly crafted and yet completely devoid of pretension or overwrought melodrama. Unfairly lumped in with other female, proto-adult contemporary songwriters like Joni Mitchell or Carole King, Sill was much closer in spirit to Brian Wilson, Nick Drake, or one her idols, J.S. Bach. She had a gift for making very complicated things sound simple, beautiful.

The second album Judee Sill made, proved to be her last. Instead of using an outside arranger for the strings for her album Heart Food (as she did on her previous album Judee Sill), Sill did all of the work herself.

    Judee Sill

Judee Sill's debut album (as well as the debut of the Asylum label) heralded a major new talent in the airy, contemporary folk world of the early '70s. The album employed the production skills of Sill's ex-husband Bob Harris, as well as ex-Turtle and ex-Leaves Jimmy Pons, and Graham Nash (on the album's sole single, 'Jesus Was s Crossmaker'). Judee Sill featured all original compositions, many of which relied on Sill's own brand of cosmological Christian imagery to make their point. By turns spare and lavishly orchestrated, there is still a cohesive feel to all of the album; her lyrics are exceptionally poetic and her voice is smooth enough to give every song a shimmery feel. The essence of the music is folk, the execution pop: the songs feel like a comfort blanket, a statement of hope from a troubled soul.

    Strange Weekend (Awaiting Repress)

Strange Weekend is Porcelain Rafts debut record, yet in many ways its his 156th. Somewhere in New York, Rome, or maybe London, there is a suitcase full of tapes, minidiscs and CDs, days and days worth of music, all of it the result of Mauro Remiddis 27 years of travels across Europe, from his native Italy to London; of caravaning with the Berlin Youth Circus playing traditional gypsy Klezmer music; of reinterpreting traditional music in North Korea; and of a stint playing piano for an Off Broadway tap dance show.

Amazingly, Strange Weekend, with deep roots in so many times and places, is an album that beautifully captures the fleeting right now. Remiddis interest in movement, about capturing a momentary now en route to the next, is apparent; postcards and polaroids of buildings and faces from the street flicker past. The projects genesis lies in this visual imagery. Over the past year, Remiddi has compiled a catalogue of images, gathered from the various nooks and crannies of the internet, that have served as notes, inspiration, context and a map for Porcelain Rafts music.

Remiddis androgynous vapor of a voice weaves like a ghost between Nick Gilder and The Alessi Brothers, Julee Cruise and Judee Sill. In more contemporary terms, Porcelain Raft stands confidently on a high hill between the sounds of M83 and Beach House. Lead track Drifting In and Out is loping and anthemic; gauzy and chiming. Shapeless and Gone follows with a heavy strum reminiscent of Cosmic Dancer, full of mood and style without all the wearying excesses and feathered boas. Porcelain Rafts thesis statement hits when side-B kicks off with Unless You Speak From Your Heart. Remiddis enigmatic vocals carrying a hook so simple that you might think you sang it first; keys and bass that might make the needle jump off of your turntable; and a sense of raw sincerity that has come to trademark Remiddis songs is what ultimately resonates.

And here, the myriad travels crystallize into something visceral; you may not be able to see the visuals Remiddi holds so dear, but you can feel them throughout Strange Weekend, and they stay with you as you travel on. Strange Weekend might have been made in a small place (a Brooklyn basement, in fact), but it is huge dream-pop, with melodies and synths billowing out in all directions.

    In The Hollows

there's a thrilling feeling of freedom to it all.
    - PITCHFORK

Nat Baldwin is a musical maverick one of the
best leftfield pop albums of the year.
    -DROWNED IN SOUND

    terrifically earnest, terrifyingly intimate, and
    terribly special.
    -THE BOSTON PHOENIX

In The Hollows is Nat Baldwin's followup to 2008's People Changes. Despite his busy scheule recording and touring as the bass player for Dirty Projectors, Nat found time to write
and record his most soulful and ambitious collection of songs to date. After recording the
initial tracks at Machines With Magnets in Pawtucket, RI, Nat recruited Otto Hauser for
drums and percussion, and Rob Moose and Clarice Jensen to write string arrangements.
Discussing the album's production, Nat says I wanted to achieve a consistency throughout
that my past albums have lacked. I wanted the strings to add to the mournful quality of the
songs, weaving their way through the sonic terrain, providing emotional emphasis, but also
leaving necessary amounts of space. Albums by Nick Drake, Judee Sill, Joanna Newsom,
Antony & the Johnsons, and Bill Callahan, to name a few, provided inspiration in balancing
that intimacy with minimal, but powerful, adornments.

Much of the album was written while Nat was training for a marathon at his home in Maine.
According to Nat, I had a pretty rigorous and consistent routine of running/working out
early in the morning, and working on music all afternoon/evening. I also started reading
obsessively during this time, as I wasn't moving around much after the morning marathon
training. Some of the songs were inspired by books I was reading, and some were inspired
by my lifestyle. Blending autobiographical details with fiction, the songs cover a wide
range of topics including boxing, drowning, bodybuilding, target practice, will power, Steve
Prefontaine, competition, separation, isolation, devastation, manipulation, conflagration,
    intoxication, and suicide.

Immersive, athletic, and often profound, In the Hollows represents his clearest and most
consistent album-length statement, melodically, structurally, and lyrically. Nat explains
that I hope it is as unsettling as it is beautiful. I want it to make people feel things they
    can't describe.

Huge Demand For Vinyl Pressing Of The Classic Release From Brand New

    Gatefold Jacket With Original Artwork

Pressed On 180 Gram Black Vinyl

As the popularity of emo and punk-pop plateaued, many bands had a lot to prove to stay in the game. As of 2003, Brand New had sidestepped any notion that they'd be stuck in the prototypical mold found on Your Favorite Weapon. Unlike their debut, Deja Entendu isn't all about bitter breakups and doesn't fall into a permanent punk-pop hole. Produced by Steven Haigler (Pixies, Quicksand), this sophomore effort finds Brand New maturing, reaching for textures and song structures instead of clichÉs. They still, however, alternate their full-on blasts with slower acoustic work, which doesn't hurt. Many antiromantic lyrics such as my tongue is the only muscle on my body that works harder than my heart saturate the [album], but there's still some resentment with downers such as I hope you come down with something they can't diagnose and don't have a cure for. The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows is one of the stronger tracks and isn't so much a fresh entry as it is a rewrite of their semihit Jude Law and a Semester Abroad. It's not quite dÉjà vu; it's just consistent. -Kenyon Hopkin (All Music Guide)

    Black Origami

Planet Mu are very excited to announce Jlin's long awaited second album "Black Origami." A percussion-led tour de force, it's a creation that seals her reputation as a unique producer with an exceptional ability to make riveting rhythmic music. "Black Origami" is driven by a deep creative thirst which she describes as "this driving feeling that I wanted to do something different, something that challenged me to my core. Black Origami for me, comes from letting go creatively, creating with no boundaries. The simple definition of origami is the art of folding and constructing paper into a beautiful, yet complex design. Composing music for me is like origami, only I'm replacing paper with sound. I chose to title the album Black Origami because like Dark Energy I still create from the beauty of darkness and blackness. The willingness to go into the hardest places within myself to create for me means that I can touch the Infinity."

Spirituality and movement are both at the core of "Black Origami", inspired largely by her ongoing collaborations with Indian dancer/movement artist Avril Stormy Unger whom she met and collaborated with at her debut performance for the Unsound festival - "There is a fine line between me entertaining a person and my spirituality. Avril, who collaborates with me by means of dance, feels the exact same way. Movement played a great role in Black Origami. The track Carbon 7 is very inspired by the way Avril moves and dances. Our rhythms are so in sync at times it kind of scares us. When there is something I can't quite figure out when it comes to my production, it's like she senses it. Her response to me is always You'll figure it out. Once I figure it out it's like time and space no longer exist."

Similar time shifting/folding/disrupting effects can be heard throughout the record - especially on "Holy Child" an unlikely collaboration with minimalist legend William Basinski. She also collaborates again with Holly Herndon on "1%", while Halcyon Veil producer Fawkes' voice is on "Calcination" and Cape Town rapper Dope Saint Jude provides vocals for "Never Created, Never Destroyed.

    Black Vinyl Version

When Brand New released Deja Entendu in mid-2003, it caught a lot of their fans off guard. It found the band taking a stylistic leap forward from the clever (albeit cookie-cutter) pop-punk of their 2001 debut, exploring expanded sonic textures and indie rock overtones, their urgent choruses tempered by acoustic musings and softer introspections. It all seemed very deliberate yet completely natural all the same, and the record was an underground smash. Something even more substantial was definitely brewing beneath the band's emo façade, and as a result, Brand New's follow-up was hotly anticipated for the three years it took the band to release it. The resulting The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me is the completion of their pop-punk molting process and one of the best surprises -- that isn't really a surprise at all -- to come out of 2006. Even when they were playing straightforward pop-punk ditties, Brand New had an edge to them that made them seem smarter than their peers; now they sound even older and stronger (and like they've been listening to a lot of '90s college and indie rock). This record is dark and dense, yet accessible, a shadowy air permeating every crevice where Jesse Lacey's plaintive and often tortured lyrics aren't already residing. He draws listeners in with vulnerable ruminations and questions of love, death, self, and religion, and his vocal inflections bring as much meaning to the table as his carefully chosen words. The opening Sowing Season ebbs and flows steadily, moving along under light guitar before exploding with percussion, Lacey ably switching from a hushed delivery into an anguished cry of emotion before falling back down again effortlessly. With it, Brand New sets up the somber intensity of the record straightaway. Textural and sonic layers unfold at every turn -- punching drums and trembling guitars here, aching vocals and subtle touches of string there -- and the album moves with a directed force that seems so naturally powerful and uncontrived, it's almost ridiculous to think that the band cut its teeth with poppy anthems like Jude Law and a Summer Abroad. The Devil and God is not an album of hooks; the excellent percussive stomp of The Archers Bows Have Broken is the most immediate here, but songs get stuck in the brain nonetheless and demand repeated spins. Old fans especially smitten by Deja's Play Crack the Sky have no excuse not to love everything about this record, as even lengthy tracks (like the near-eight-minute Limousine or the chill-inducing beauty of Jesus) are completely compelling. People who were ready to discount Brand New into the emo/TRL heap of the 2000s better rethink their stance; Brand New seems to know exactly what they're doing and this record is a testament to their ability to stay true to themselves. Whether they want to stay underground or fully break into the mainstream, this album has the potential to do either. Either way it doesn't really matter -- whatever happens, there's no denying how excellent this record is.

    The Beatles 1967-1970

All Analogue Master From The Original Master Tapes

Picking up where 1962-1966 left off, the double-album compilation 1967-1970, commonly called The Blue Album, covers the Beatles' later records, from Sgt. Pepper's through Let It Be. Like The Red Album, The Blue Album was released in the wake of a pair of widely advertised quadruple-LP bootlegs, Alpha Omega, Vols. 1-2: The Story of the Beatles, which had appeared early in 1973. And like its companion volume, this set contains a mixture of hits, including singles like Lady Madonna, Hey Jude, and Revolution -- which had originally appeared only as 45s -- plus important album tracks like Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, A Day in the Life, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and Come Together, as well as orphaned tracks such as the single versions of Let It Be and Get Back, which had never been on any LP before. The first two sides of the original double-LP edition carry listeners through the highlights of the psychedelic era, starting with Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane and up through Magical Mystery Tour, before returning to rock & roll territory on Lady Madonna, Hey Jude, and Revolution. The second LP skims three of the more popular tracks off of the sprawling White Album (aka The Beatles) and moves into the late singles (The Ballad of John and Yoko, Old Brown Shoe, Let It Be), plus single and album highlights from Abbey Road and Let It Be. As a prÉcis of the group's final 36 months, it's all mightily impressive, even if 1967-1970 misses several great songs. But like its predecessor, this set does capture the essence (if not the full range) of the Beatles' later recordings.

A two-volume set tying up loose ends, single releases and B-sides. But frankly, when your loose ends include 'Hey Jude', then it still probably qualifies as essential listening. There's a bit of filler here (nobody but a Germanic completist needs to hear 'Sie Liebt Dich') but there are a lot of absolute classics, especially on disc 2, which includes the barrelhouse 'Lady Madonna', the droning psychedelic 'Rain' (the whole of Oasis's career in one song) and Harrison's lovely 'Old Brown Shoe'. It ends with their final B-side, 'You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)'.

A team consisting of some of the best producers and engineers in the recording industry were brought together and would spend 4 long years mixing and mastering with some of the most state of the art recording equipment. Treating these records much like a science experiment, engineers ran extensive tests before copying the analog master tapes over into a digital format using 24-bit/192 kHz resolution, and carefully removing clicks, vocal pops and poor edits. Never altering the original songs themselves, just polishing them up a bit.

    Fillmore East 2-11-69

Live at the Fillmore East 2-11-69 is a double live album by the Grateful Dead recorded during the Live/Dead tour on February 11, 1969 at the Fillmore East in New York City.

Performing two hour-long sets as the opening act to Janis Joplin's New York debut as a solo star, the Grateful Dead turned in a characteristic performance for this period in their career. In between the release of their second and third albums, they devoted much time to the songs that would turn up several months later on Aoxomoxoa, including acoustic renditions of Dupree's Diamond Blues and Mountains of the Moon. Pigpen dominated the first set, singing the blues standards Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, I'm a King Bee, and Turn on Your Lovelight. But a large part of both sets was given over to the group's extended medleys, in the first set Cryptical Envelopment/The Other One, in the second Dark Star/St. Stephen/The Eleven. These involved, largely instrumental pieces set the tone for the Dead at the end of the '60s and produced their breakthrough with Live/Dead, which was recorded within weeks of this show. There is also a game version of Hey Jude, the biggest hit of the previous year, to end the first set, and an unlisted, interrupted performance of Cosmic Charlie as a second-set encore.
