Bon IverBon Iver is Justin Vernon returning to former haunts with a new spirit. The reprises are there, solitude, quietude, hope and desperation compressed, but always a rhythm arises, a pulse vivified by gratitude and grace notes. The winter, the legend, has faded to just that, and this is the new momentary present.
Bon Iver is often equated with just me, says Vernon, but you are who surrounds you, and for Bon Iver I wanted to invite those voices as musical catalysts. Thus on the track Beth/Rest and throughout the album, we hear the pedal steel of Greg Leisz (Lucinda Williams, Bill Frisell), the uniquely layered low end of Colin Stetsons (Tom Waits, Arcade Fire) saxophones, the riffing of Mike Lewis (Happy Apple, Andrew Bird) altos and tenors, and the lush horns of C.J. Camerieri (Rufus Wainwright, Sufjan Stevens). Bon Iver regulars Sean Carey, Mike Noyce and Matt McCaughan contributed vocals, drums and production, Rob Moose (Antony and the Johnsons, The National) helped with arranging and added strings, and fellow members of Volcano Choir, Jim Schoenecker and Tom Wincek provided processing.
Bon Iver was recorded and mixed over the course of three years at April Base Studios, a remodeled veterinarians clinic located in rural Fall Creek, Wisconsin.1. Perth

Blood BankBon Iver's four-song Blood Bank collection continues down the path forged by 2008's critically acclaimed For Emma, Forever Ago.
While still tied to the identity of the place where it was born, Bon Iver is no longer an unplanned entity synonymous with Justin Vernon. It is an idea, a place and sentiment that has now become as international as it is timeless. From the title tracks remembrance of the winter warmth we seek, to the summer love tribute of b-side gem Babys, Bon Ivers snow-blanketed harmonies live across the seasons. Still, there is a reverence for sabbatical, solitude and the winding down of time. As much as Emma is about the cold, the Blood Bank collection is about the warmth that gets you through it.
Bon Iver has grown to include more than what was available at the much-fabled Wisconsin cabin, such as piano, slide guitar and vocoder. As Justin layers on harmonies in the meditative R&B acapella The Woods, he declares Im building a still to slow down the time. It is as poetic as it is necessary. Both expansive and intimate, these four songs explore the darker and lighter natures of the seasons and what they signify, and offer a dynamic glimpse into the natural energy and refined craftsmanship that characterize Justin Vernons music.1. VoyageurKathleen Edwards Voyageur is the acclaimed Canadian singer/songwriters fourth album, and her first since 2008's Asking for Flowers. Co-produced with Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), Voyageur is less of a departure than it is a journey, and like any transforming trip, it demands that we let go of any preconceptions about the destination. Voyageur evokes a spectrum of overwhelming feelings within the atmosphere of a lucid dream. Edwards characters speak to the grief, loneliness, shock, and confusion that come with endings as well as the hope and irrepressible joy that accompany new beginnings, but the stories are told with a seductively quiet strength. I'll Find A Way
Features Special Guests: Casey Dienel of White Hinterland, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, Patty Grifn, Sam Amidon, And Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond
Produced by Justin Vernon (Bon Iver, Kathleen Edwards), I'll Find a Way is a unique collaboration between one of popular music's longest-running acts and one of its fastest-rising stars. Known primarily for his work in the indie and folk realms, the Bon Iver frontman proved a perfect fit to work with the Blind Boys, exhibiting a deep knowledge and
appreciation of gospel music. Vernon, and old friend and band mate Phil Cook (Megafaun, The Shouting Matches) corralled a lively backing band for the album and hand-picked a range of songs for the Blind Boys to sing. I'll Find a Way features some of the Blind Boys' most fervent vocals as well as contributions by a new generation of Blind Boys
fans - Sam Amidon, Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond, Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, Casey Dienel of White Hinterland, Patty Grifn and Justin Vernon himself. The result is a rousing collection of gospel songs, new and old, that address life's most desperate hours but also savor the triumphs and reassurances of faith.
I'll Find a Way represents a strong new chapter for the Blind Boys of Alabama, whose career stretches back more than seventy years. Formed in the late 1930s at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in Talladega, the group has harmonized throughout
the turbulent twentieth century and well into the twenty-rst: from Jim Crow through Civil Rights and into the Obama era. They have, however, enjoyed some of their biggest and most rousing successes in the last ten years, during which they've won ve Grammys, four Gospel Music Awards and multiple invitations to sing at the White House.
For I'll Find a Way, their ninth studio album of the twenty-rst century, the Blind Boys of Alabama - which includes Jimmy Carter, Eric "Ricky" McKinnie, Joey Williams, Tracy Pierce, Ben Moore and newest addition Paul Beasley - decamped to the wintry wild of rural Wisconsin to record at Vernon's April Base studio. Known primarily for his work in the indie and folk realms, the Bon Iver frontman proved a perfect t to work with the Blind Boys, exhibiting a deep knowledge and appreciation of gospel
"It's not just singing," explains the 82-year-old Carter. "We're bringing the message to the people, and that message is the good news of God. We sing from the heart, and what comes from the heart reaches the heart. If you have any feeling in you,
you will feel the Blind Boys."1. God Put A Rainbow In The Cloud

For Emma, Forever AgoPronounced "bohn eevair; French for "good winter" and spelled wrong deliberately. This debut is centered around a particular aesthetic; Justin Vernon, the primary force behind Bon Iver, moved to a remote cabin in the woods of Northwestern Wisconsin at the onset of winter, alone for three months. This solitary time fed a bold, uninhibited new musical focus. All his personal trouble, lack of perspective, heartache, longing, love, loss, and guilt that had been stockpiled over the past six years was suddenly purged into song. The NY Times called this record "irresistible", and it was given a "Recommeded" rating by Pitchfork. RIYL: Iron & Wine, M. Ward, and Elliott Smith.1.Flume

After spending two years living on opposite coasts and pursuing their own
creative projects, Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp returned last spring to set to
work on the sixth full-length album from the Rosebuds. Joining up with Bon
Iver frontman Justin Vernon (a friend and former bandmate who, in a 2011
interview, noted that the Rosebuds make "some of the most important
music in the world"), the North Carolina-bred duo spent a week in Vernon's
studio teasing out a batch of songs that effortlessly weave the hooky song-craft of classic jangle-pop, the cagey romanticism of new wave, and a
refined yet full-hearted sensibility all their own. Featuring Vernon on guitar
and synths-as well as Bon Iver drummer Matt McCaughan and Sylvan Esso's

We Don't Even Live HereWe Don't Even Live Here is the fourth solo album from Doomtree co-founder, punk philosopher and lyrical bomb-thrower Stefon Alexander, aka P.O.S. It's a tight, bombastic record that builds on the Minneapolis-bred rapper and producer's penchant for grinding beats and radical lyrics. But at the same time, WDELH marks a change -- in sound and in attitude.
Known for welding hip-hop with guitar squalls and screamed vocals, on WDELH P.O.S. steps away from his noisy past in favor of futuristic beats fit for a Berlin nightclub. Though his hip-hop foundation is firm on tracks like the fiery "Fuck Your Stuff" and the funky "Wanted/Wasted," the album brings banging new sounds from dance-oriented collaborators like German DJs Boyz Noise & Housemeister, Gayngs' Ryan Olson, and Innerpartysystem's Patric Russel
Also along for the ride are Bon Iver's Justin Vernon (who lends his shapeshifting vocals to the heartfelt bear-hug of an anthem "Where We Land") and P.O.S.' trusted Doomtree co-conspirators Lazerbeak, Cecil Otter, Mike Mictlan, and Sims. Bringing it all into focus is all-star producer and mix engineer Andrew Dawson (P.O.S.'s former high school classmate), who has worked on platinum releases from the likes of Kanye West, Jay-Z, Beyonce, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne and Fun.01. Grown UnknownTrue to the ever-present dichotomies that serve as a source of inspiration for her, Lia Ices' emotionally driven and experimental pop music is both avant-garde and timeless. A natural yet refined grace permeates her work: she is a piano herself. Dancing on a finely crafted line between the percussive qualities of her instrument, and the melodic elements within the rhythm of her voice, Ices' music reveals itself as epiphany. With such overt elegance as if from a bygone era, listening to her songs inspires a psychic time slip, and its hard to know if you're wading in the warmest of memories or awed by the invention and glow of new surroundings.
The album starts with an inviting whisper on stand-out track Love is Won. Less than a minute in, we start to catch a glimpse at the depths of the record as we find ourselves, all of a sudden, in the midst of a swaying, swaggering down tempo soul, punctuated by bass and drum interplay.
The quiet moments are very quiet, and the space within them is palpable. On Lilac, a single voice occupies the intimate yet expansive space generated by sparse acoustic guitar and bass. Such a delicate balance is struck that when slight brushwork enters, its impact is surprisingly startling. Ices' voice floats and flutters around you, like the leaves from trees on a fleeting fall day, and the instrumentation matches that subtle dynamism.
Appearing as a guest vocalist for Daphne, the only duet on the album, is Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. The magic generated by Ices' and Vernon's voices together is quite simply a powerful thing. All We GrowThe debut album from S. Carey, All We Grow, is the result of a young lifetime spent immersed in music. As a band member of Bon Iver from the very beginning, Sean Carey witnessed a flip of his formal training to step firmly into a worldwide-touring rock band. His performance degree in classical percussion from the University of Wisconsin and his love for jazz drumming prepared him for a central role in the inspiring force of the Bon Iver live show.
All We Grow is a convergence of Carey's Waltz For Debby-era Bill Evans inflected jazz tendencies, and traditional rock band experience, taking leads from Mark Hollis' Talk Talk. It also retests the waters of modern classical composition, investigating the moodiness generated by percussive repetition in a manner familiar to fans of Steve Reich. In his downtime on tour with Bon Iver, Sean would spend time composing. During infrequent tour breaks at home he would patiently record these pieces, adding layers eachtime. Two years later, the parts converged to make an album.
For as much room to breathe as Carey allows his compositions, there are incredibly dynamic moments of bombast held right next to moments of subtle depth and texture. Engineered by Jaime Hansen and Brian Joseph, intermittently at home and at April Base (Justin Vernon's studio outside Eau Claire), All We Grow is an all-encompassing headphone experience as intimate as chamber music and as ambitious as a symphony.1. It's All AquaticFirst release from the new Chigliak label curated by Bon Iver's Justin Vernon. LP comes with a download of unreleased recordings of the Ev Sessions recorded by Minneapolis studio great Ev Olcott.
It's a difficult task to write about Amateur Love. The band was the singular catalyst in founding Chigliak. What Amateur Love means to the history of Eau Claire music is representative of everything we set out to illuminate with this record label. Our goal is to release records that hold weight in people's hearts. For us, it's notable to point out that one person's favorite record of all time may have only existed in bedrooms that were within 100 miles of each other.
There seems to be a premium on popularity in popular music. When an artist sells records to people all over the world, their music is then validated by a larger social contract. But Amateur Love is the most popular band Eau Claire has ever known, and for good reason. It is not in our estimation that the re-issuing of It's All Aquatic will project the band into that great popularity. No, we just hope to give the music a further chance to live on, for those who adored and those who never had the chance.
Josh Scott was the ambassador of my heart for many years. While both songwriters in Eau Claire, we were close friends and admired each other's music. It was obvious to both of us, however, who the better writer was. Josh was writing songs that were both more mature and masterful than mine. His songs came from a perspective as snarly as Paul Westerberg, as enchanting as Neil Young, yet he wielded power as beguiling and unique as any songwriter I've ever heard. Nestling himself around Brad and Phil Cook (Megafaun) and Brian Moen (Peter Wolf Crier, Laarks and Shouting Matches), who stretched themselves outside their own comfort zones into those of un-tapped electronic pop, Amateur Love became one of the most enigmatic and electrifying bands I have ever known. With local-legend Jaime Hansen engineering, the band was caught at the rise to their peak of musical power on It's All Aquatic in 2003.
What you have here is Amateur Love's one and only full-length, initially only released on CD, now reissued as a 12" vinyl LP. Included is a special download of unreleased recordings that I have come to know as the Ev Sessions; recorded by Ev Olcott, the great master of Minneapolis studio magic and former member of 12Rods and Halloween, Alaska. Ev produced these sessions after the release of It's All Aquatic sometime in 2004. These sessions are considered 'un-finished' by the band but stand as a fantastic 'what could have been' document. Amateur Love gets to always live on, through the grooves on our turntables now. Enjoy. We all did. - Justin Vernon1. Huddle

22, A Million22 stands for Justin Vernon. The number's recurrence in his life has become a meaningful pattern through encounter and recognition. A mile marker, a jersey number, a bill total. The reflection of '2' is his identity bound up in duality: the relationship he has with himself and the relationship he has with the rest of the world. A Million is the rest of that world: the millions of people who we will never know, the infinite and the endless, everything outside one's self that makes you who you are. The other side of Justin's duality is the thing that completes him and what he searches for.
22, A Million is thus part love letter, part final resting place of two decades of searching for self-understanding like a religion. And the inner-resolution of maybe never finding that understanding. When Justin sings, "I'm still standing in the need of prayer" he begs the question of what's worth worshipping, or rather, what is possible to worship. If music is a sacred form of discovering, knowing and being, then Bon Iver's albums are totems to that faith. The poly-fi record formed at the congruence of a bold yet delicate sonic palette. These sounds were the way out from the suffocating enclosure and captivity of anxiety.
The ten songs of 22, A Million are a collection of sacred moments, love's torment and salvation, contexts of intense memories, signs that you can pin meaning onto or disregard coincidence. If 2011's Bon Iver, Bon Iver built a habitat rooted in physical spaces, then 22, A Million is the letting go of that attachment to a place.1. 22 (OVER SN)

ADAD-JAG-0116xSharon Van Etten
TrampThe shimmering sound of Tramp both defies and illuminates the unsteadiness of a life in flux. During the 14 months of scattered recording sessions, Sharon Van Etten was without a home, crashing with friends and spreading out her possessions between various locations. The only constant during this time was when Van Etten returned to the garage studio of The Nationals Aaron Dessner.
How much more incredible then that Tramp sounds so profoundly effortless and singular-minded. Given the space to experiment, Van Etten pushed herself deeper than ever before, testing different approaches and rejecting many. Van Ettens records have been subtle and powerful, at once heartbreaking, luminous, intricate and beautiful. Now lush and triumphant, this is a fresh vision, and Van Etten has realized it with the same grace that made her first two releases so enduring.
Van Ettens debut, Because I Was In Love, was a sparse set of solo songs, all anchored by her instantly unmistakable voice. The intricate, understated record covered so much emotional ground within its 33 minutes, you couldn't possibly absorb it all at once, nor stay too long in one place along its journey. The following year, Van Etten added a full band to her music. Fans quickly picked favorites, then found their choices changing, often more than once.
An early fan of Van Etten, Dessner performed epic closer Love More with Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. When Van Etten found out, she contacted him, and almost immediately collaborative plans were made. Dessner had just completed work on his studio, and offered up his new space, as well as his insight as a savvy producer. But with both artists near-nonstop touring schedule, recording days had to be spread out, a few days here, a couple weeks there, and a lot of floating and flying in between.
The resulting album is an assured and strident one, and Tramp showcases an artist in control of her powers, incorporating vivid arrangements and instrumentation into the songwriting. It is a startling collection, filled with as much defiant rock (the precise venom of Serpents), as pious, minimal beauty (the breathtaking Kevins and Joke or a Lie). There are declarative hymns (in the earnest solemnity of All I Can), and remarkably sultry numbers (as in Magic Chords). Tramp features many stupendous guests, as well, including Wye Oaks Jenn Wasner, Julianna Barwick, Beiruts Zach Condon, and Dessner himself.1. Warsaw

CoveredTen years ago, a 22 year old songwriter entered a recording studio with producer Tucker Martine (My
Morning Jacket, Neko Case, Beth Orton) to make a record.
Poised with one of the greatest talents for carrying Appalachian music into new places, Sarah Siskind
penned a record in which every moment, every stitch thread perfectly. Recorded to 2-inch analog tape, Covered is a masterful record, in which American music and guitar icon, and one of Sarah's musical heroes, Bill Frisell plays a key role.
But amid plans for a national release, sinus illness struck and multiple surgeries followed, and Covered was instead released independently on a much smaller scale than originally planned. With little tour and press support, the album never earned its place in the hearts it could have...
A few years later, by chance, I came across a copy of Covered while digging into Frisell's catalog, for I also have a deep admiration for the music icon and couldn't get enough of his work. Looking back, I had no idea how much this album would shake me down; it quickly earned its place in my heart. I listened so much from then on that I wore out several copies, all the while pondering how such an amazing record could go largely unnoticed by the masses.
Four years passed, Sarah fully recovered from her sinus issues and set her sights high once again. She
went on to record her much lauded boutique double EP Studio.Living Room and followed it with widely-acclaimed Say it Louder, which earned her 2009 Nashville Music Awards' "Americana Album
of the Year." As she gained more and more attention, writing songs for Alison Krauss and the like, I listened along but still continued to wear out Covered, bewildered as to why it still wasn't grabbing more people with its poise.
Finally, yet still overdue, we at Chigliak give you Covered, reissued and released for the first time on
vinyl. Listen and let it shake you down.

RepaveIt's been four years since the first Volcano Choir album, Unmap, provided a glimpse into the collaborative mindset between a singer and a band that inspired him. Ideas were minted, written at a
distance and realized in the studio; edges sanded back and flaps tucked in, the craftsmanship of the
endeavor bearing evidence of the craft itself, and the technology used to assemble it. Unmap strove to
find strands of life between the ones and zeroes - a carefully constructive narrative that showed the
listener through its darkest passages like a tour guide leading their wards through a cave, with nothing but a slack length of rope and the senses of sound and touch. Just as importantly, it brought these people together, setting an expectation: be your own band. Achieve transference. Learn how to play these songs in the live setting. Tour Japan. Do some dates in America. Pull the life from the record and share it with tiny segments of the world.
Repave brings Volcano Choir into sharp focus. The glitch-laden, cautious presentation of the band's
previous work serves as points of both reference and departure across these eight songs, the product
of growing conviction and trust, of a fully-operational rock band, gifted in shading and nuance, and rumbling with power. It's the sound of the creative process as it evolves and ultimately explodes, the seamless interleaving of electronic and acoustic/amplified instruments, multithreaded with the timbre and technology of the human voice as it enters and exits the equation. Moreover, Repave is the sound of confident musicians extending their reach to anthemic peaks and pulling back to reveal moments of real vulnerability, sure enough of themselves to let them stand on their own.
If Repave reminds you of other kinds of records from the past decade or so, it's done so on the bonds
between the members of Volcano Choir, how their friendships were fortified over the years-long
process of writing and recording these songs. There is an openness to this work that won't be taken for
granted - real, moving tales of change, sadness, loss and truth grace the wordplay of these tracks, an account of life between the fringes of poetry and reality. With each verse you can sense that someone,
somewhere is listening to this music and getting stronger, feeling better, learning to open up their soul.

Ones and SixesOnes and Sixes is the new album from the Duluth-based trio of Alan Sparhawk, Mimi Parker and Steve Garrington, collectively known as Low. Ones and Sixes was co-produced by Low and BJ Burton at Justin Vernon's April Base Studios in Eau Claire, WI. "In our 20+ years of writing songs, I've learned that no matter how escapist, divergent, or even transcendent the creative process feels, the result is more beholden to what is going on at the moment. It's hard to admit that one is so influenced by what is in front of us. Doesn't it come from something magical and far away? No, it comes from here. It comes from now. I'm not going to tell you what this record is about because I have too much respect for that moment when you come to know it for yourself." - Alan Sparhawk, Low I spent much of 2002 in Germany, studying literature, collecting new experiences and attempting to process the existential crises so typical of your early 20s. Low - especially their album Things We Lost in the Fire, which I listened to for countless hours - was one of the few bands who helped me along with this. Their slow-growing, minimal, yet expansive songs just beg for introspection. Demand it, even. They cultivate a sense of grandeur and inquiry with their melancholic tone, which, if you're anything like me, sets you right down in front of the mirror for some much-neglected self-assessment. Is Low somehow The Velvet Undergound's song "I'll Be Your Mirror" transubstantiated into band form? As Alan said above, the meanings of the songs are transitory. Even if there was a specific impetus, nothing needs explaining beyond what the song itself reveals. It's an exercise on Low's end and, when the music is released, it becomes one for us. Ones and Sixes takes everything Low excels at and dips it in a heavy gold plating of industrial-leaning electronics. This catapults to new and extreme heights the innate beauty their music has always had. It's a series of contrasts: stunning and menacing, gorgeous and frightening, giving and desperate, and, ultimately, unbearably heavy and unbearably light. From one to six and back again. -Dee Dee Penny (Dum Dum Girls), NYC, June 20151. Gentle

MaydayHe's the techno punk, the unboxable nomad: Berlin DJ and producer BOYS NOIZE will release his 4th solo album MAYDAY via Boysnoize Records. The third track off the new album, "Starchild", features Channy Leaneagh of Poliça, and has been chosen as the world record by Zane Lowe on his BEATS 1 show.
Alex Ridha, better known as BOYS NOIZE, made his DJ debut at the age of 15, taking a teenager´s love of house and techno to a global scale. Accolades have been bestowed by Rolling Stone, who named him one of the "Top 10 DJ's Who Rule The World" and Beatport, who elected him "Best Electronic Act" 3 years in a row. He´s rocked the world's biggest stages, lit up Coachella three times, took Lollapalooza by storm, and headlined festivals and clubs on every continent - from Berlin techno temple Berghain to Fuji Rock in Japan to Justin Vernon's Eaux Claires Festival in the woods of Wisconsin.
As an artist and producer, Ridha has created a sound and a vision that's peerless, uncompromising, and enduring - respected in the scene, banging from underground to mainstream, it flies in the face of convention at every turn. He's remixed Depeche Mode, Daft Punk, David Lynch, Feist and Nine Inch Nails, collaborated with Snoop Dogg, Erol Alkan, and Jarvis Cocker, worked on Mark Ronson's "Uptown Special" and most recently on the soundtrack for upcoming Oliver Stone's Snowden, and released group projects with genius pianist Chilly Gonzales (Octave Minds), Skrillex (Dog Blood), and Mr. Oizo (Handbraekes). The list of names alone speak volumes about Ridha's multifaceted approach.
Now BOYS NOIZE is back with MAYDAY, his most dynamic album to date. Infectiously energetic, fusing the energy and spirit of punk with the raw power of modern techno and the early days of rave, MAYDAY exists as a new expression entirely, transporting the innocence of a bygone era into the here and now without ever sounding anachronistic or nostalgic. Collaborations with POLIÇA, HUDSON MOHAWKE, BENGA, REMY BANKS, SPANK ROCK, and some special secret guests (the liner notes are worth a read) broaden the range further than ever. "I always try to challenge myself as a producer and a musician," says Ridha. "Keeping the purity of electronic music but taking it somewhere new is the most difficult, and most motivating. MAYDAY is me taking the music I love to the future, no matter how uncertain the future seems."
MAYDAY speaks for a generation that no longer gives a damn about boundaries. Walls are for breaking down. MAYDAY's for tearing them to shreds.LP 1
