I See Beyond The Black Sun

This record is less the apocalyptic doom of his ramshackle post-punk group Old Time Relijun, and more of a raga influenced anthropological meditation. This music winds like an infinite snake around the vine of a central note, probing hypnotically as Mr. de Dionyso inexhaustibly exhales mandalas, spirals, unknowable cuneiforms, and other beguiling shapes, while simultaneously driving the pulse and drone to advance, like a slow motion tsunami, towards a shocking climax of release - Michael Gira, Angels Of Light / Swans.

If ever there was a group in the Britpop movement that brought spirituality to the table, Kula Shaker did it in spades, and magnificently at that.

After a trip to India lead singer and front man Crispian Mills became interested in Indian music, culture and tradition and decided to use instruments like the sitar, tamboura and tabla and write songs in the ancient and sacred Hindu language.

The combination with the psychedelic swirling guitars and a Beatles-esque vibe ensured a string of top-ten hits, including Tattva, Govinda, Hey Dude, and their cover of the Deep Purple classic Hush.

'K' climbed to the top of the British album charts, went double platinum and won Kula Shaker the 1997 BRIT award for Best Breakthrough Act.

The third full-length from Baltimore's Wilderness was conceived as one musical piece, the result of being invited to collaborate with renowned visual artist Charles Long. The eight identifiable parts of the record are not readily separated from each other; such is the flow from and into each part. The result comes across as more dynamic and the perceived space they inhabit seems more vast.

With six officially released albums, two more in the can, four probably never to see the light of day, and a few live albums on the shelf, Jason returns to K with this release; an organic documentation of songs he'd been playing every night for half a decade on the road. As such, all the vocal parts are first takes, as he tries to capture the energy he loves putting into every show, wanting to please audiences and make them feel alive.

    To Win Or To Lose

Their second release for K reflects the new age of darkness that has recently hit the global mass market. This record has fast songs about living and self-destruction, songs about natural disaster, public domain dance music, and tales of those who walk the streets, sleep in dumpsters or cars, or who jump trains. "[This] defiantly Alabamian punk/rockabilly troupe who used to practice in a graveyard have stumbled on a winning formula: choppy, rhythm-centric odes to Buddy Holly and Carl Perkins and distinguish [themselves] with deft arrangements and an old hound's sense of restraint" - Pitchfork.

Her fifth album and first for K contains an elegant attention to detail in the mix that will please all those in need of great headphone jams, electronic minimalist drone magic, and heroic adventure. But A Ways Away is driven by the singer and the songs. Her voice is out front and the vocals are gorgeously sung. Contributors include Jana Hunter, Mira, Osa Atoe (New Bloods), Geoff Soule (Fuck), and Jean Cook and Daniel Littleton (Ida). Ever since she began putting her name on the front of her albums, Tara Jane O'Neil has perfected the art of writing songs that perfectly encapsulate both the comfort of misery and the misery of comfort - Pitchfork.

    Hit It Or Quit It

25th Anniversary Reissue Of Girl Trouble's 1988 Debut LP

Featuring Two Bonus Tracks Exclusive To This Release, "White Lightning" And "Shakin' All Over."

Hit It Or Quit It Was Originally A Co-Release Between K And Sub Pop, And It Was The First Full-length That Sub Pop Ever Released.

Tacoma, Washington, 1988: A town where hazardous waste and
pulp mill fumes smelled like a breath of fresh air, old buildings were
being leveled in order to revitalize a dying downtown, forests and
farmlands were giving way to industrial parks and shopping malls, a
cultural event was wrestling at the Tacoma Dome, and Girl Trouble
could be found practicing with their plywood speaker cabinets and a
drum set purchased for $70 from the Sears surplus store in a shed
beside Bon and Kahuna's parent's house, where they still practice
    today.

This reissue of Girl Trouble's debut album, Hit It Or Quit It [KLP229],
includes eleven original songs, one Northwest classic (Steppin'
Out by Paul Revere & The Raiders), and two bonus tracks. To keep
the energy level up and the over-production level down, these songs
were recorded live with only an occasional added guitar or vocal
track. With the minimal pounding of Bon's drums, the steady cool of
Dale on bass, the buzzsaw scream from Kahuna's Ouija guitar, and
the rabid rock 'n' roll stylings of K.P. Kendall, Girl Trouble continues
playing throughout the Northwest, 30-plus years on.

So that's the story, kids. Use it or lose it. It's my way or the highway. Eat
it or wear it. Hit It or Quit It!

    Pith

Anyone who has seen Emily Beanblossom perform has surely left entirely taken with her. As the lead singer of Christmas, a band whose unique style of psych rock made them a cult marvel, Emily sold out both shows and records, due in no small part to her captivating, cultivated persona and the rare power of her voice. A vagabond for our ilk, she has lived life on the road and in collaborations, drifting down
the line until she was called back to her family farm outside Chicago, Ill. Here she paused to lay down the hollowed noise that would become Ruby Fray. Her premier album Pith is a string of musical gems that range from harmonic americana and folk to shadowy psychedelia, united in their spectral chamber arrangements.

Each of the twelve tracks on Pith come from demos Emily has been keeping close, and showcase her varieties of influence. And the Moon, with its steady drum machine loop, eerie harmonies and mandolin strings stands apart from its follower, Mint Ice Cream, a playful Americana-style duet with Calvin Johnson.Closed Eye is the same, a drifting melody punctuated by tinny drums and fuzzy guitar
strumming. But this is the beauty of Pithlike the single,Lets Grow Older,it gambols, and then fallsto despair and questioning, is both the blossom and the thorny edge. Ruby Fray is a dark star risen, and the power and soul of Emilys voice changes all that it shines upon.

Pith includes the talents of numerous Pacific Northwest masterminds: producer & engineer Ben Hargett (who recorded the Christmas LP), songwriting and production assistant Ian Van Veen (Legs The Crab, Georgy), and harmony/strings specialist Giselle Garcia. As per K / Dub Narcotic tradition, a number of artists from the K roster also play on Pith, including Arrington de Dionyso, Gordon Baker (Mailaikat dan Singa, Desolation Wilderness), Andrew Dorsett (LAKE, Desolation Wilderness), Angelo Spencer, Markly Morrison (LAKE), Jake Jones (Christmas), and Calvin Johnson.

Quite honestly her vocals are so beautiful, you almost feel theyre being wasted on a raw punk band like Christmas. But then again Christmasis a classic punk band without a lot of nonsense and its Beanblossoms vocals that make theyre music special.

The World Is Real (Awaiting Repress)

LAKE's comprehensive pop vision has always been anchored in an honest mournfulness, a sensitivity to nature, and the vulnerability of life. These mark
LAKE's more down tempo, contemplative grooves, which are given their fullest voice yet on The World Is Real, LAKE's fourth album for K and sixth overall.
It follows 2008's Oh, the Places We'll Go, 2009's Let's Build A Roof, and 2011's Giving & Receiving, and was similarly recorded at Dub Narcotic Studio at K headquarters in their hometown of Olympia, Washington.

The songwriting partnership of Ashley Eriksson and Eli Moore is the locus of LAKE's creative engine, but the additional members are as integral and
longstanding. They are the diversely talented Andrew Dorsett, Markly Morisson, and Lindsay Schief. The creative sound that surrounds LAKE is storied in collaboration, sonic adventure and an allegiance to exploring the limits of crafting pop songs. They have toured, recorded and allied with some of the most pioneering figures in contemporary independent music: R. Stevie Moore, Chris Cohen, Karl Blau, and Phil Elverum's Mt. Eerie, for example.

Lead track Do You Recall? offers wide and subtle nods to working-class 80's classics like Mellencamp's Jack & Diane, or Hornsby's The Way It Is. Featuring drum machine and nostalgic guitar riffs, the lead and group vocals float through droning synths like wind to a bounded world.

Dog in the Desert one of the album's centerpieces, was initially inspired by the text-works of conceptual artist, Richard Long, and his "art made by walking in landscapes" (richardlong.org). Eriksson's voice, and the dark plodding instrumentation of the song, take Long's images and shape them into a meditation on abandonment, loss and reconciliation with nature.

Tellingly, the earthbound bass groove on Dog in the Desert is a quotation of Steely Dan's Black Cow. It is not the only song to directly live sample Fagen and Becker: Perfect Fit mashes up the chordal rhythms of Peg to excellent effect.
It's clear that LAKE enjoys to boldly tread and rework the classics in this way, most notably in Mark Morrison's first personal LAKE offering Takin' My Time, a direct reference to the Isley Brothers song "Caravan of Love." This smooth R&B pop seducer - a wild crowd favorite at LAKE's local Olympia outings - is a bit of an aside from The World Is Real's more meditative core.

Other highlights on The World Is Real: Bury the House takes its 60's styled psychedelic setting for a playful, self-deprecating riff on LAKE's own new age-y ideals: Bury the house / under the garden / make an attempt to go outside. Composure and "I Wish For You" have the pop attributes of Pet Sounds and Smile era Beach Boys - faintly forlorn, but still warm and sweet. And the community oriented compassion exhibited by LAKE's members is beautifully summarized in the opening lines of album closer Reconcile: How do we exist under the sun
but not in bliss? / What could have been? / Act on it.

Lovers of hybrid pop will hear the bright whirring electronic keys that notably set McCartney II apart from the rest of Paul's catalog, as well as the bittersweet organ and keyboard influence of Yo La Tengo, and the minimalist funk of Talking Heads on
this record. However, precise comparison is difficult: The World is Real avoids easy genre comparisons. An album full of the articulation of discontent and loss, LAKE captures these emotions in tandem with the pop music joys they have so expertly reigned in for many years.

Born in Arkansas and based in Olympia, Washington, Kendl Winter twists banjo and guitar into captivating melodies; Apple Core is her fourth solo album and first release for K. On this album apples represent temptation, a prize for beauty, a gift for knowledge, gravity, truth, autumn, and harvest. With its country roots, indie trunk, and sweet soulful sadness fruiting on the branches, Apple Core is fruitful to the core.

Self-recorded on both a boat in the Puget Sound and a basement in the west-side neighborhood of Olympia, Apple Core features isolated, haunting harmonies, laced with the fabrics woven by community, her guitar and her banjo. Kendl safety pins patches of piano and slide guitar on to the cloth, washes it in a lather of honest and provocative songs, and hangs it on the line to dry in the shy, unpredictable northwest sun.

    Welcome To The Midnight Opry

Welcome to the Midnight Opry is the third full-length album by The Pine Hill Haints and its like a burning tumbleweed headed straight for an open field in the middle of a dry summer. Its bright, dangerous, vast and blistering. Laid out before you is a full rotation of snazzed-up, working-class rockabilly. The contradiction there is left open like that so youre given all sorts of room to mentally wander from one track to the other on an emotional journey that takes you from the range to the rock show, whatever you want to make it within those parameters, thats what it is.

Originally from Alabama, The Pine Hill Haints formed in the late 90s and have since released two full-length albums, both on K. Lead singer James Barrier is a sight to be seen at their live shows, of which they play many), poised tall and dandy behind his home-made wooden microphone stand. Hes backed by a family of a band that provides honey-toned instrumentation through the use of accordions, washboard, saws, buckets and of course the standards: guitar, bass and drums.

For this release, the band recorded at Dial Back Sound Studio in Water Valley Mississippi on 2 tape. The tracks were recorded live in one night, and then mixed the other night; the end result is anything but slap-dash however, it takes years of practice to become this quick on the draw.

The Magik Sounds of The Pine Hill Haints

The Magik Sounds of the Pine Hill Haints ventures
softly into the cool, dark whisper of the haunted south. Short,
tight spun rhymes about silver quarters and vampires come
from a late evening session in a small pink house in south
Alabama, located next to an old Native American mound of
shells and bones, recorded at low volume with red eyes and
open windows. This is the 4th Halloween dance party long
player the Haints have cut for K.

Mrs Pac-Man sets the theme...although this record is
quicker and faster, Buddy Holly pop driven than most other
Haint efforts, the opening track places your mind in the
smokey state needed to feel the Magik Sound vibe. The sad
Queen of all truck stops and late night greasy spoons, the
lovely Angel Mrs Pac-man hold her charm over the listener
and keeps every loner in tune with midnight feeling.

I used to work a lot of third shift jobs, serving crummy food to
sweethearts, the day finished, done, another one in the
books, and the great burden of living in a modern nightmare
almost, almost felt like it had been lifted...the sweet early
a.m. twilight hours, where all humans are brothers again, all
hatreds and vices and ill wills are temporarily forgiven, folks
smile and tell a little joke or two, and the haunted Mrs Pac-man winks eternal in the background...

    It Can Be Done!

It Can Be Done! is an album of new beginnings. The past year has seen Kendl Winter leave the successful bluegrass group The Blackberry Bushes to tour the country as a solo act, walking her banjo into dark bars, smoky music halls and packed amphitheaters night after night. It's also full of intimacy. With a voice that is marvelously unique and bold, and songs that are both classically poetic and rooted deep in her own experience, Kendl draws upon an old-time Americana and bluegrass bent that brings to mind the haunting vocal work of Karen Dalton and Gillian Welch. Her banjo work on the album is striking, showcasing a kind of expertise that comes from years of companionship with a beloved instrument. It Can Be Done! is a victory album of sorts, and Kendl's third release on K, the follow up to her beautiful 2012 landmark The Mechanics of Hovering Flight.

Recorded by Calvin Johnson on reel-to-reel tape at Dub Narcotic Studio in Olympia, WA, on It Can Be Done! Kendl is backed by The Summer Gold, Austin Cooper (drums), Joe Capoccia (guitar) and Derek Johnson (cello). Together they explored her year of new horizons. In sweet spinning songs like "Centrifugal Forces," Kendl makes even the awkward, arduous task of foreign laundry seem a steady triumph: "I'm out walking, Tulsa wind, stumbling in place again. Who knew it would be so hard to do your laundry in Berlin?" The following lead tracks "Rosie" and "Dreaming of Babylon," both convey the spirit Kendl has been working from this past year, the very idea that she can choose to live her life outside of cultural expectations and guidelines, even if when its difficult, even if when terrifying. That It is, in fact, possible to manifest the life of your dreams. It can be done!

Ashley Eriksson (darling to many for her work with LAKE) has achieved a status few artists ever know: her song Island Song can be hummed by almost any teenager in the United States (a surprising discovery she made while teaching Portland's
Rock Camp for Girls last summer). Used as the closing theme for Cartoon Network's cult sensation Adventure Time, Island Song has over a million views on Youtube and has generated dozens of cover videos, making Ashley Eriksson the equivalent of a household name to the youth of America.

Now Ashley Eriksson has recorded Colours [KLP245], her inspired solo debut on K, and a collection of piano pieces, ballads and songs for her fans around the world. Tucker Martine (producer of LAKE, Decemberists) planted the idea that Ashley should make a solo record after they worked together in 2011, but it wasn't until returning from a trip to Sweden that Ashley was motivated to create Colours, and her vision for a solo piano album quickly evolved to include songs with her beloved '70s style of instrumentation and pop sensibility (most strikingly her cover of Ett Stilla Regn a song by the tragic Swedish pop team Ted and Kenneth GĂ„rdestad, adapted in the style Me and My Arrow by Harry Nilsson). Because Ashley engineered and recorded the album herself (using the same 8-track she's been recording with since she was a teenager), she was able to capture her collection of songs in a variety of old haunts, including favorite grange halls and churches, her tiny shed in northern Sweden, friends' houses, and in the Whidbey Island studio-trailer where she lived with husband (and LAKE collaborator) Eli Moore.

It's the emotional space Ashley reserved for herself while recording Colours that makes it such a personal and vivid statement. Of writing the beautiful, lead ballad Why Are You So Helpless?" Ashley says "I dreamt this song while I was sleeping in the little shed behind my dad's house in northern Sweden. I was in a record store and a John Lennon song came on I'd never heard before. It was a 70's 'super group' album, like the Band or CSNY or something like that. When I woke up I was anxious
to capture the song. I recorded the demo on my phone and sang with an acoustic guitar I had with me." In a similar way, all the songs on Colours are collected from her dreams, expanded by graceful piano notes and the peaceful echoes of fire-lit
    evenings.

A Place Where We Could Go (Discontinued)

This is a debut album containing ten songs, but really it is a cinematic escapade into the mind of the illusive and evocative Jeremy Jay. A Place Where We Could Go is a statement of fiction and fact, the romance of life without the people and things that pull down the corners. It's a fairy tale illuminated by streetlight and a safe haven for the exploration of dreams. Jeremy Jay and his music is like Buddy Holly, Peter Pan and the John Hughes movies rolled into one, pure storybook.

    Splash (Discontinued)

Splash, the third album by Jeremy Jay, was recorded over the summer of 2009, while Jeremy was living in London. It mixes a deeply personal, chopped-up narrative with crunchy guitars and sky-high synths. Splash is a sonic postcard that tells the story of a life picked up in a new and unfamiliar environment; that fresh ambition of a new life. Despite its recording location, Splash, has a very nostalgic, American feel.

    No Snare

Melanie Valera's third full length album moves away from some of the more exuberant dance oriented songs of past years into a darker and more melancholy direction. What No Snare retains is Valera's emotional clarity and eloquence. Her lyrics remain light on their feet, moving with ease around the complexities of her compositions, her vocals rolling hard with the strength of conviction.
