    Lick It Up

Due to the underachievement of their exceptional 1982 comeback album, Creatures of the Night, Kiss knew the time was right to drop the makeup, so in September 1983 the band shocked their fans by unmasking on MTV. Their first non-makeup album, Lick It Up, followed soon after and successfully re-established the band among the heavy metal masses worldwide. Kiss also reconnected with their stateside fans -- Lick It Up was the band's first record to achieve gold status since 1980's Kiss Unmasked. The album's success was spurred by MTV's repeated airing of the imaginative video for the album's strong title track, and songs such as Exciter, Not for the Innocent, A Million to One, and the rap-rocker All Hell's Breaking Loose confirmed that the band was back on the right track. Vinnie Vincent again proved to be a worthy replacement to original guitarist Ace Frehley but would unfortunately leave the band after the completion of the Lick It Up worldwide tour (eventually resurfacing with the Vinnie Vincent Invasion in the late '80s). Lick It Up is undoubtedly Kiss' best non-makeup album.

    Monster

Monster represents KISS' nod to the music that first inspired them to pick up their guitars and flamethrowers and don makeup to entertain millions. The group goes back to their own beginnings with the Who-like "Freak," while Gene lives up to the title track's declaration on the raucous prehistoric punk rock of "Back to the Stone Age" and the bludgeoning, self-referential "The Devil is Me." "Take Me Down Below" is one of KISS' classic sexual double entendres in the mode of "Love Gun" or "Lick It Up." Guitarist Thayer takes a solo turn on his own with "Outta This World," a tribute to his KISS "spaceman" character, while drummer Singer provides the vocals (and the inspiration) for the Stanley-penned arena anthem "All for the Love of Rock & Roll."

Crazy Nights is the fourteenth studio album by Kiss, recorded in June 1987. This was the second album to feature the new line up of Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Bruce Kulick, and Eric Carr. It featured keyboards which was another departure in their music style changing from their Creatures of the Night/Lick It Up/Animalize/Asylum heavy metal sound into a light metal sound.
