    On April 10, KISS will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - which will be broadcast in May -
    and then will kick off a summer co-headlining tour with Def Leppard starting in June.


    After sinking deep into this musical celebration, even the not-so-avid listener will surely know something more about Kiss, a classic rock icon of the '70s roaring back in vibrant and passionate form. This recording of a session done expressly for the program MTV Unplugged in 1996 brought together a special group for a remarkable, if unexpected, reunion. Throughout this record, you can feel the support and raw adoration of the audience present, certainly a mixture of long-time fans and new admirers. The members of Kiss got together to rock hard on their axes and crash big on the drums, bringing a renewed sense of freshness and excitement. Nearly rock & roll legends, they exceeded expectations and, given their newfound energy, charisma, and love for the music, their performance provided the catalyst for the beginning of a successful world reunion tour. Coming Home delivers a feverish and electric opening that gets the crowd on its feet in a hurry. Soon the emotion and presence of this group are brought back with startling grace and wisdom on Plaster Caster, and the beautiful acoustic medley Goin' Blind. The decades of Kiss, their costumes, and their wild stadium shows roll back in a heartbeat through the crashing tune Do You Love Me. Perhaps one of the most bewildering tunes that really reflects the image of Kiss is the rocking blues tune Domino. The crowd is really fired up now, next experiencing the charming and soulful power rock ballad Sure Know Something. A World Without Heroes is very subdued and reflective. Rock Bottom is delicate and mysterious in the opening seconds, with a lush minor harmony delivered picking style on the acoustic. Now it gets rough, expresses Stanley, grooving in a racy blues statement. See You Tonight is a romantic and pretty ballad delivered with sweetness, and the group sings, I'll see you tonight/And if I can't, I'll cry, I'll cry/I see you tonight, outside. Then on comes the darker resonance of the band with I Still Love You, expressing grave longing after a grueling breakup. I got to make you see, is a gripping line in a haunting bridge section, before the shouted, emotional, sometimes painful chorus: Girl, it seems the price I have of losing you/Will be my hell to pay/It makes me want to die/'Cause I still love you. The solo during the bridge is reminiscent of the chord structure of the Guess Who's Undun. After this painful, depressing song, new breath is found with Every Time I Look at You, a song of forgiveness, delivered with sincerity and the feeling of hope: Every time I hold you/The things I never told you seem to come easily/'Cause you're everything to me. The bridge is brilliant and seems to elevate the melody to a gratifying level, before breaking into a chilling guitar improv, layered over with a shimmering string orchestra. Beth is the most heartwarming song of Kiss' power ballads: Beth I know you're lonely/And I hope you'll be alright/'Cause me and the boys will be playing all night. Finally, a Kiss show wouldn't be complete without the ultimate party song, Rock and Roll All Night, a tune still electric without electric guitars.

    Of the four Kiss solo albums released simultaneously in 1978, the best of the bunch is guitarist Ace Frehley's. Similar in approach to Paul Stanley's album, Frehley did not stray far from the expected heavy Kiss sound (like Gene Simmons and Peter Criss did with their releases), but Ace was equipped with better compositions than Stanley. With future Late Night with David Letterman drummer Anton Fig helping out (as well as Letterman bassist Will Lee on three tracks), Frehley proved once and for all that he was not simply a backup musician to Kiss head honchos Simmons and Stanley. All of the tracks are strong, such as the venomous opener, Rip It Out, as well as a few tracks that confirm how Frehley was indulging in alcohol and drugs a bit too much by the late '70s (Snow Blind, Ozone, and Wiped Out). You'll also find many underrated compositions (Speedin' Back to My Baby, What's on Your Mind?, I'm in Need of Love), a gorgeous instrumental (Fractured Mirror), and the Top 20 hit single New York Groove. Unfortunately, when Ace left Kiss in 1982 (eventually forming Frehley's Comet), he never came close to topping this solid and inspired 1978 solo outing.

    Love Gun was Kiss' fifth studio album in three years (and seventh release overall, peaking at number four on Billboard), and proved to be the last release that the original lineup played on. By 1977, Kiss merchandise was flooding the marketplace (lunch boxes, makeup kits, comic books, etc.), and it would ultimately lead to a Kiss backlash in the '80s. But the band was still focused on their music for Love Gun, similar in sound and approach to Rock and Roll Over, their previous straight-ahead rock release. It included Ace Frehley's lead vocals on Shock Me, as well as one of Kiss' best and most renowned hard rockers in the thunderous title track. The album's opener, I Stole Your Love, also served as the opening number on Kiss' ensuing tour, while Christine Sixteen is one of the few Kiss tracks to contain piano prominently. Almost Human is an underrated rocker and features a great Jimi Hendrix-esque guitar solo from Frehley (no doubt due to ex-Hendrix producer Eddie Kramer manning the boards again), while Plaster Caster is a tribute to the famous groupies of the same name.

    With the massive success of their previous album, the experimental Bob Ezrin-produced Destroyer (which contained the surprise ballad hit Beth), Kiss could have taken the safe route and continued in that direction -- or return to the raw hard rock of their first four albums. They chose the latter. Hooking back up with Eddie Kramer, the producer of their 1975 breakthrough release Alive! and their very first demo, Kiss rented out the Nanuet Star Theater in upstate New York to record their next album, Rock and Roll Over. With a more direct, in-your-face production, Rock and Roll Over is one of Kiss' most consistent records. Two of the album's best tracks became hit singles -- the sleazy hard rocker Calling Dr. Love and an acoustic ballad that was originally intended for Rod Stewart, Hard Luck Woman (later covered by country star Garth Brooks). But like all other classic rock albums, the lesser-known material is often just as strong -- I Want You and Makin' Love became concert staples over the years, while Mr. Speed is one of the most underrated songs in Kiss' catalogue. Also included are the fan favorites Take Me, Ladies Room, Love 'Em and Leave 'Em, and the original version of See You in Your Dreams, which was later re-recorded for Gene Simmons' 1978 solo album.

    This is KISS's 1976 multi-platinum, landmark album Destroyer: Resurrected, newly remixed from the original master tapes by the album's original producer, Bob Ezrin. Ezrin pulled the tapes from the vaults and painstakingly remixed the entire album, enhancing the sound and bringing out its rich texture and vibrancy, while keeping the integrity of the original recording intact. Destroyer: Resurrected will also include rare and unreleased recordings rediscovered during the remixing process, plus the originally intended cover artwork.


    Hot on the heels of their breakthrough hit album Alive!, KISS released their fourth studio album Destroyer which is considered the most ambitious studio recording of KISS's '70s catalog. Bob Ezrin, who had previously worked with Alice Cooper, was brought in to produce the album and among the production flourishes Ezrin introduced to KISS were sound effects, strings, a children's choir, reversed drumming and the eerie, echoing sounds of screaming children over Gene Simmons' vocals on "God of Thunder." Upon its release, Destroyer reached the No. 11 position on the Billboard Top 200 and, with the help of the surprise top-10 hit "Beth," was their first album to go platinum.


    Originally released as the B-side to the single "Detroit Rock City," "Beth,"-the heart-yearning ballad co-written and performed by drummer Peter Criss-was quickly picked up by radio nationwide and became the first top 10 for KISS, climbing all the way to the No. 7 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. While going through the original tapes, a forgotten vocal piece that was originally edited out in the final mix of "Beth" was discovered and now, for the first time, the complete original vocal recording has been restored and is included in the final mix. Other rediscovered gems include a complete, alternate guitar solo for the track "Sweet Pain," now heard for the first time since it was originally recorded. The newly remixed "Sweet Pain" with the original guitar solo will be included as a bonus track. In addition to the treasures found buried in the hours of recordings, KISS classics such as "Detroit Rock City," "Shout It Out Loud," "Do You Love Me?" and "God of Thunder" were painstakingly remixed by Ezrin as he fleshed out the drums and guitars, bringing out the bottom end to the bass, making his mixes tight and tough.


    In addition, Destroyer: Resurrected will now be issued with the originally intended cover art thought too controversial for the time. Created by artist Ken Kelly, the "brown" cover depicts KISS dressed in their ALIVE! costumes and standing on rubble in front of a burning city in ruins. At the time, the record company thought it was too violent and settled for the tamer "blue" version known today. This release also marked the first time that a comic-book illustration of the band appeared on the cover, confirming that the band was transforming from hard rockers to superheroes.

    Although Kiss' self-titled debut performed respectably on the charts, it was not the blockbuster they had hoped for. With the album fading on the charts in the summer of 1974, Kiss was summoned back into the studio to work on a follow-up. Producers Richie Wise and Kenny Kerner were onboard again, and even though the sonics are muddier (and more filler is present in the compositions), Hotter Than Hell is another quintessential Kiss release. Many of the songs have been forgotten over the years (few have been featured in concert after the '70s), but there are still more than a few gems to be found. It's unclear if the members of Kiss were having problems with their personal relationships at the time, but it's a common thread that runs through the songs. The plodding Got to Choose and the rapid-fire Parasite deal with love gone bad; the title track is about unobtainable love, while Goin' Blind is a disturbing tale of a 93-year-old having an affair with a 16-year-old. Also included are the early favorites Let Me Go, Rock 'n' Roll and Watchin' You, as well as the original electric version of Comin' Home (an acoustic version was the opener of 1996's MTV Unplugged) and Strange Ways, which contains one of Ace Frehley's best guitar solos. Even though Hotter Than Hell actually fared worse on the charts than the debut, it has become a revered album among Kiss fans over the years -- and rightfully so.

    Ritual

    Ritual is something of an anomaly in the Keith Jarrett archive. It's a solo album, as many of his best are, only this time it is pianist, conductor, and frequent collaborator Dennis Russell Davies at the keys playing a work penned entirely by Jarrett. The hallmarks of a Jarrett piano recital are all there-the rolling ostinatos, dense arpeggios, and profound doublings-yet are valenced differently under the rubric of "composition." In this context, we get a sense of "once removed-ness" that might not present itself under improvisational circumstances. The piece's modest 32 minutes are divided into two immodest parts. From the opening groundswell we get not only dense pockets of energy, but also nodes of emptiness. Put another way: the music's glorious peaks share the same space as the shadowy valleys at their feet, thereby encompassing a harmonious middle ground. Like a geyser, its eruptions are predictable yet manage to enthrall every time. Despite its claustrophobic beginnings, Part 1 ends in bright solitude, like a room in which the curtain has been slowly opened to welcome the morning sun. Heavier chording marks Part 2, which resolves in a hopeful melancholy, but not before gelling the emotional plasticity of its precursor. This brings us full circle, ending on a solemn intonation of a single note.


    Ritual is far more "regulated" than typical Jarrett fare, spun as it is from the surrogacy of another performer rather than through the alchemy of spontaneous creation (though there is, of course, some of each in the other). The results are captivating in their own way, stoked by every depressed key and lifted pedal. Its shapes are drawn not by what is, but what has been and will be. The present is invisible and lives on only as formless possibility, caught like a blown kiss in the cup of one's hand.

    Batdance was written for the 1989 Batman soundtrack. Helped by the film's popularity, the song reached number one in the US, becoming Prince's fourth American number-one single, and his first to achieve the feat of topping all 3 American charts since Kiss in 1986.

    Batdance was a last-minute replacement for a brooding track titled Dance with the Devil, which Prince felt was too dark. It is almost two songs in one-a chaotic, mechanical dance beat that changes gears into a slinky, funky groove before changing back for the song's conclusion (except on the single version in which it eliminates the guitar solo before the middle section, then goes straight to the mechanical Joker laughter from the end of the movie and an earlier movie soundbyte of Michael Keaton saying Stop). The track is an amalgam of many musical ideas of Prince's at the time. Elements from at least seven songs (some unreleased) were incorporated into Batdance: 200 Balloons, We Got the Power, House in Order, Rave Unto the Joy Fantastic (later released on the album Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic), The Future, and Electric Chair. Some of these were mere snippets, and other segments showed up only in remixes of the track. The song was also loaded with dialog samples from the film.

    The B-side to the Batdance is 200 Balloons, which was recorded for the film and serves as the musical blueprint for the main portion of Batdance. The song was rejected for the film by Tim Burton and replaced with Trust. The lyrics of 200 Balloons reference the scene which it was created for to a greater degree than the replacement track, which is only connected to the scene by the Joker asking Who do you trust? after the song ends. Prince did little more than replace the lyrics of 200 Balloons in its transition into Batdance. Only musical portions survived the transition, but full lyrics showed up in The Batmix(turn your head to the east, I be coming from the west). 200 Balloons also contains samples of House in Order and Rave Unto the Joy Fantastic; the latter was another song submitted for inclusion in the movie, but rejected (it was replaced by Partyman).

    Before his untimely death in 2012, renowned American rock guitarist Ronnie Montrose began recording an ambitious passion project with bassist Ricky Phillips (Styx, Bad English) and drummer Eric Singer (Kiss, Alice Cooper). The idea was to record 10 songs with 10 different singers and call the album 10X10. Sadly, Montrose was unable to see the album through during his lifetime. Instead, Phillips made it his mission to finish the songs by enlisting a small army of Ronnie's musician friends to record the vocals and the guitar solos for each song, completing the album in recent years.


    Phillips says the songs represent some of Montrose's best work. "His songs still have the fire and angst of a young rebel, but with some added wisdom and foresight voiced in his own unique language of 'guitar-speak.' On 10X10, we hear Ronnie at the top of his game, from the opening crunch guitar of 'Heavy Traffic,' all the way to the closing song, 'I'm Not Lying,' which was Ronnie's tip of the hat to his friend Robin Trower."


    10X10 features inspired pairings, like Deep Purple singer Glenn Hughes with Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen ("Still Singin' With The Band") and singer Sammy Hagar with Toto guitarist Steve Lukather ("Color Blind"). Legendary blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa also showcases his guitar talents on the track "The Kingdom's Come Undone" with Ricky Phillips on vocals. A few artists both sing and play, like Edgar Winter ("Love Is An Art") and Tommy Shaw ("Strong Enough").


    Several artists who appear on 10X10 had recorded with Ronnie during his career, like Edgar Winter, who included the guitarist on his 1972 album, They Only Come Out At Night. Sammy Hagar got his start singing with Montrose. Between 1973-75, he recorded two influential albums - Montrose and Paper Money - with the band and toured the world.
    More than 40 years later, Hagar was among the first who agreed to help finish Ronnie's final album. "It's valuable to have 10X10 be seen as Ronnie's last work, rather than going and digging up some stuff from his past. This was something he truly had a vision for," says Hagar.

    A grimly glamorous ghoul who first slithered from the cobwebbed shadows of Charlotte, North Carolina, in the early 90s, WEDNESDAY 13 has firmly established himself as the world's premier purveyor of balls-out horror punk insanity. With a vivid and vile imagination that has endeared him to countless fans of riff-driven macabre over the last two decades, he has been one of rock's most prolific protagonists, spreading his credo of grave-robbing rock 'n' roll and Hallowe'en debauchery around the globe and unleashing a seemingly endless stream of blood-spattered albums and EPs.


    "All my favorite stuff, like KISS and ALICE COOPER and TWISTED SISTER, those guys set the bar pretty high," he states. "I always wanted to do something in the worlds of those bands. That's the blueprint. It had to be as outrageous and crazy as that and I wanted to be on someone's wall one day and have their parents say 'Oh my god, what is that?' The formula's still there from when I started doing it as a kid and started wanting to be in a band. It's just GI Joe and Dracula!"


    After several years of sharpening his creative teeth, WEDNESDAY 13 emerged from the fetid crypt of obscurity with his band FRANKENSTEIN DRAG QUEENS FROM PLANET 13, those masters of snotty schlock rock that released an astonishing five studio albums and six EPs between 1996 and 2002. Always the leader of the revolting pack, WEDNESDAY 13 then became a bona fide international rock star as frontman for the MURDERDOLLS, his collaboration with SLIPKNOT's Joey Jordison. The band took the world by storm, with Europe and the UK, in particular, succumbing to the feral charms of 2002 debut album, »Beyond The Valley Of The Murderdolls«; a raucous eruption of big tunes and bad attitude that noisily redefined the horror punk genre. After MURDERDOLLS went on an extended hiatus in 2004, WEDNESDAY 13 embarked on a widely lauded solo career that again provided him with an outlet for his relentless outpouring of fiendish musical and lyrical ideas. Albums like »Transylvania 90210« (released by Roadrunner in 2005), »Fang Bang« and »Skeletons« all cemented our pallid hero's reputation as the bastard son of ALICE COOPER and THE MISFITS, while his outlaw country project, BOURBON CROW and one-off glam metal vehicle, GUNFIRE 76 proved that he had sufficient versatility to survive outside the graveyard and abattoir.


    MURDERDOLLS reconvened in 2010 for the vicious »Women And Children Last« album and another successful world tour before disappearing once more into the freezing midnight fog, leaving WEDNESDAY to revive his solo career with a few thousand volts of wicked electricity yet more highly praised albums and tours including 2014's scintillating acoustic opus »Undead Unplugged« and the following year's thunderous »Monsters Of The Universe: Come Out & Plague«. However, absolutely nothing that WEDNESDAY has created in the past has even touched upon the horrifying potency and allure of his brand new studio album, »Condolences«.


    Frustrated with the arduous process of releasing his own music, our favorite black-hearted freak has thrown himself and his music into a whirling maelstrom of reinvention. The result is not just the heaviest and most authentically disturbing record of the great man's career but also a huge creative leap forward, neatly encapsulated by the new album's simple and direct title.


    "It's more of a serious WEDNESDAY 13 record, I guess," he says. "The campiness has gone and it's taken a darker vibe. It's definitely not in the camp, sleazy world anymore. The band is visually stronger and that's taken things to a new level. Normally my album titles are parodies of something, like »Women And Children Last«, that's a VAN HALEN album title gone wrong! (laughs) So I wanted to make sure that this record came across as a brand new version of WEDNESDAY 13."


    In musical terms, »Condolences« showcases WEDNESDAY's growing obsession with the world of heavy metal and its endless possibilities for exploring tales of horror and violence. Produced by renowned studio guru Zeuss, new songs like anthemic first single 'What The Night Brings' and the pile-driving 'Blood Sick' still exhibit a dash of B-movie weirdness and are full of WEDNESDAY's trademark twisted lyrics, but where previous albums were rooted in the worlds of punk rock and glam metal, »Condolences« is a full-on modern metal record with gigantic balls and the attitude to match.     "The punk rock vibe has left the building and it's become a full-on metal vibe," WEDNESDAY agrees. "I've been the horror-punk guy for years, but this is horror metal. It's just evolution. Over the last ten years, I've become a metalhead for the most part. That second MURDERDOLLS record just amped the whole thing up, and the guys in the band have influenced me with so much other stuff. It's not just me with my SEX PISTOLS, ALICE COOPER and RAMONES records anymore! (laughs) Now I've got my band incorporating everything from death metal to rock'n'roll. It's all across the boards. There are no rules. We can do whatever we want, whatever fits."


    Manifestly the strongest, heaviest and most individual album of his lengthy career, »Condolences« promises to push WEDNESDAY 13 into heavy music's upper echelons once again.     "It's non-stop touring once the record comes out," WEDNESDAY concludes. "We just did our first video for 'What The Night Brings' and the visuals are really cool. I've incorporated a lot of stuff I've been doing live, like this devil character I've been transforming into at shows, and that got worked in. We're taking the music, the imagery and the entire stage show up a level. It's gonna be a full-on theatrical stage production, so I'll be busy as fuck on stage!     Karriem Riggins is best known as a jazz drummer and hip-hop producer for artists like Common, Slum Village, Talib Kweli and The Roots, but he doesn't categorize himself as anything but an artist. He advises younger musicians to do the same.
    You don't have to put yourself in a box...there's so many different ways to go, Riggins says. A student of late jazz bassist Ray Brown, he tours with another Brown protÉgÉ, Grammy Award winner Diana Krall. In 2011, he collaborated with former Beatle Paul McCartney in concert and on Kisses on the Bottom, McCartney's first studio release in five years. Names of some of the jazz artists he's backed reads like the genre's hall of fame - Hank Jones, Oscar Peterson, Milt Jackson, Donald Byrd and Ron Carter.


    But on his solo debut Alone Together, set for an October 23 release on Stones Throw Records (Vinyl and digital will be released in two-parts over summer and fall 2012), Riggins plants himself firmly as a hip-hop producer with a 34-track instrumental odyssey through nearly every influence on his career thus far. The project was inspired by much of the music he was creating while living in Los Angeles, and also by the love of his son and family.


    Now residing in his native Detroit, Riggins is back where it all began. I feel like I can really breath and stay inspired here, and I have room to set up my lab and be creative, he says. This is the rationale behind the title Alone Together, taken from a jazz standard written by Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz that begin with the words, Alone together, above the crowd.


    Coming back to the machines, I feel like I can really express myself, Riggins says. This is the way that I express my rhythms.


    Machines, however, are just one way he expresses his rhythms. Midway through the album, the track Water is interrupted by a vocal snippet where the speaker places Riggins right at the intersection of hip-hop and jazz. Alone Together is that intersection; it's the jazz music he's played professionally since the age of 19, and it's crafting beats like Africa on an MPC5000 while touring throughout Eastern Europe and Russia.


    I need the balance, Riggins says, of working with the likes of Krall and McCartney, and also being able to go back to the studio and create hip-hop. Without that, I couldn't be who I am.


    Songs on Alone Together range from 14 seconds to a little over three minutes, and are the essence of man vs. machine. When Riggins channels Elvin Jones on the album's climax and tribute to his longtime friend, J Dilla the Greatest, his tools are a Gretsch drum kit, the Fender Rhodes and an MPC3000. As versed as he is in jazz and pop, the machines will always be at the root - until the next thing.


    There's always something new to figure out, he says. That's the blessing in it.

A student of late jazz bassist Ray Brown, he tours with another Brown protÉgÉ, Grammy Award winner Diana Krall. In 2011, he collaborated with former Beatle Paul McCartney in concert and on Kisses on the Bottom, McCartney's first studio release in five years. Names of some of the jazz artists he's backed reads like the genre's hall of fame - Hank Jones, Oscar Peterson, Milt Jackson, Donald Byrd and Ron Carter.


    But on his solo debut Alone Together, set for an October 23 release on Stones Throw Records (Vinyl and digital will be released in two-parts over summer and fall 2012), Riggins plants himself firmly as a hip-hop producer with a 34-track instrumental odyssey through nearly every influence on his career thus far. The project was inspired by much of the music he was creating while living in Los Angeles, and also by the love of his son and family.


    Now residing in his native Detroit, Riggins is back where it all began. I feel like I can really breath and stay inspired here, and I have room to set up my lab and be creative, he says. This is the rationale behind the title Alone Together, taken from a jazz standard written by Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz that begin with the words, Alone together, above the crowd.


    Coming back to the machines, I feel like I can really express myself, Riggins says. This is the way that I express my rhythms.


    Machines, however, are just one way he expresses his rhythms. Midway through the album, the track Water is interrupted by a vocal snippet where the speaker places Riggins right at the intersection of hip-hop and jazz. Alone Together is that intersection; it's the jazz music he's played professionally since the age of 19, and it's crafting beats like Africa on an MPC5000 while touring throughout Eastern Europe and Russia.


    I need the balance, Riggins says, of working with the likes of Krall and McCartney, and also being able to go back to the studio and create hip-hop. Without that, I couldn't be who I am.


    Songs on Alone Together range from 14 seconds to a little over three minutes, and are the essence of man vs. machine. When Riggins channels Elvin Jones on the album's climax and tribute to his longtime friend, J Dilla the Greatest, his tools are a Gretsch drum kit, the Fender Rhodes and an MPC3000. As versed as he is in jazz and pop, the machines will always be at the root - until the next thing.


    There's always something new to figure out, he says. That's the blessing in it.
