    Camino Del Sol

1982, Brussels: The former au pair for Rick Wakeman of Yes and two of her teenage friends are at the doorstep of Les Disques Du Crepuscule to make an album with Gilles Martin. They managed to make a contemporary bossanova record that provides the missing link between Antonio Carlos Jobim and Kraftwerk. AntenaÆs album would be issued and promptly forgotten, with Isabelle Antena moving toward jazz in Asia and the others returning to France. Twenty years later, it was findable only as a VG+LP. Intrigued by the striking coverÆs patio furniture at rest in the south of France, Numero Group scooped up Camino Del Sol immediately, giving it the distinction as the second record in their library.

    SOULROCKER

MICHAEL FRANTI & SPEARHEAD today announced their upcoming (and ninth) studio album SOULROCKER will be releasedvia Fantasy Records, their first album for the label. SOULROCKER features the new song "Crazy For You" a joyously upbeat rhythmic pop song that highlights Franti's soulful vocals and encompasses his socially conscious outlook.

In creating SOULROCKER-co-produced with Jamaican producers Stephen "Di Genius" McGregor (son of reggae luminary Freddie McGregor) and Dwayne "Supa Dups" Chin Quee (known for his work with artists like Bruno Mars and John Legend)-MICHAEL FRANTI & SPEARHEAD have introduced a new sensibility to their potent hybrid of hip-hop, rock, folk, and reggae: a gracefully arranged take on electronic music that more than fulfills the band's mission of making impassioned music you can dance to. Along with harnessing the Bay Area-based band's dynamic energy for a more powerful impact than ever before, SOULROCKER again shows Franti's singular ability to channel frustration into music that's both thought-provoking and triumphantly hopeful.

"Right now is a very challenging time for people, for our nation and the planet," says Franti, a longtime activist and past recipient of Global Exchange's Domestic Human Rights Award. "But I really believe that music can help fight war and violence and hatred. The world needs that more than ever now, so my intention with this album was to make music that could bring people together."

While each selection on SOULROCKER began with Franti working out melodies on his acoustic guitar, many of the album's songs ultimately evolved into beat-powered tracks that reveal a close and nuanced understanding of the electronic genre. "One of the first records I had as a kid was a Kraftwerk seven-inch that I got from the giveaway bin at the UC Davis radio station KDVS," recalls Franti, who grew up in Davis, CA. "We always do a DJ set at the end of our shows, and I wanted to try bringing in those dance and electronic elements but still keep the organic instrumentation that I've always loved."

Franti's message of positivity-minded political consciousness, once an outlier in music, has found momentum in the mainstream in recent years-a phenomenon that compelled him to push his artistry even further on SOULROCKER. "I feel a deeper sense of purpose in music today than I ever have in my career," he says. "The album's really about me challenging myself and growing, and just trying to make the most inspiring music I possibly can for this intense, crazy and wonderful time we're all living in."

Beat-Club was a German music program that ran from September of 1965 through December of 1972. It was broadcast from Bremen, Germany and is notable for being the first German show to be based around popular music, featuring artists like The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Tina Turner, The Who, Black Sabbath, The Bee Gees, The Beach Boys and Kraftwerk in its seven-year run.

Rory Gallagher was one of the shows most frequent visitors performing four times in the space of just over two years. His first appearance on the program was with his band Taste in 1970 and he returned soon after with his own solo work. This 2-LP set features 12 classic versions of Rory's early solo material from three separate performances circa 1971-72. 180g double vinyl reissue from Rock Classics Records.

Though they'd recorded three previous albums, Kraftwerk's modern pop legacy starts with this impressionistic excursion down Germany's famed superhighway. The rhythmic synth pulse that carries the title track is a sonic revelation while co-founder Florian Schneider's flute work and other more delicate melodic touches hearken back to the band's prog-rock foundations as do the atmospheric Kometenmelodie 1 & 2, Mitternacht and Morgenspaziergang.

    Speak & Spell

From the beginning of their career Depeche Mode have been at the forefront of remix culture; creating their own classic extended mixes back in the early 80s and over the years amassing a collection of remixers of their songs that pretty much charts the history of cutting edge dance music.

Though probably nobody fully appreciated it at the time -- perhaps least of all the band! -- Depeche Mode's debut is at once both a conservative, functional pop record and a groundbreaking release. While various synth pioneers had come before -- Gary Numan, early Human League, late-'70s Euro-disco, and above all Kraftwerk all had clear influence on Speak & Spell -- Depeche became the undisputed founder of straight-up synth pop with the album's 11 songs, light, hooky, and danceable numbers about love, life, and clubs. For all the claims about dated '80s sounds from rock purists, it should be noted that the basic guitar/bass/drums lineup of rock is almost 25 years older than the catchy keyboard lines and electronic drums making the music here. That such a sound would eventually become ubiquitous during the Reagan years, spawning lots of crud along the way, means the band should no more be held to blame for that than Motown and the Beatles for inspiring lots of bad stuff in the '60s. Credit for the album's success has to go to main songwriter Vince Clarke, who would extend and arguably perfect the synth pop formula with Yazoo and Erasure; the classic early singles New Life, Dreaming of Me, and Just Can't Get Enough, along with numbers ranging from the slyly homoerotic Pretty Boy to the moody thumper Photographic, keep everything moving throughout. David Gahan undersings about half the album, and Martin Gore's two numbers lack the distinctiveness of his later work, but Speak & Spell remains an undiluted joy.

While Kraftwerk was emerging in Europe and became an influence and inspiration to the Japanese superstars, YMO stayed true to their unique sound.

YMO's second album Solid State Survivor was released in 1979, and represented numerous crossover tracks from Techno to New Wave. Hello World

The first album of new material from the classic lineup of Information Society (Kurt, Paul and James) in over 20 years. After playing some festival dates in Summer, 2013 the band began to discuss working on a new album and the result, _hello world is the offspring. _hello world is rife with songs that have one foot firmly planted in their past and one foot confidently resting in the present; it is filled with classic INSOC dance floor fodder like Get Back, soaring epics like Jonestown, and cinematic textures like Creatures of Light and Darkness. Embracing the many faces of synthetic music while remaining organically Information Society, _hello world isn't as much a rebirth of INSOC as it is a nuclear-powered version that ups the ante. The first single, Land of the Blind, is a swirling, propulsive track that hearkens back to their signature sound yet infuses it with state of the art production values. Longtime InSoc hero Gerald V. Casale adds his vocals in a duet with Kurt on their cover of Beautiful World which adds a modern splash to the Devo classic. The group stormed the club charts in the mid '80s with their Freestyle classic Running. Inspired by the worldwide response to the single, the group seized the opportunity and moved to New York to record their major label debut, Information Society, for Tommy Boy/Reprise. Producer Fred Maher was brought in, fresh from his work on Kraftwerk's Electric Café album, and helped Robb & co. craft a tight pop sound. Initial buzz for the first single What's On Your Mind (Pure Energy) was intense, and proved to be accurate; by the time the group got to its first in-store appearance, two days after the record's release, the album was sold out. 2014 is proving to be quite a year for the band. With history's tendency to repeat itself, it appears INSOC are poised for another takeover. _Hello World, indeed.

    La Dusseldorf

Upon the breakup of legendary Krautrock duo Neu!, drummer Klaus Dinger formed La DÜsseldorf with his brother Thomas and keyboard player Hans Lampe. This, their self-titled debut, was recorded in 1975 and is a staggering mix of Dinger's trademark motorik rhythms, glammy synths, pulsing organs and urgent guitar work that altogether creates a sound that, at times, predates both punk and post-punk, no small feat. Featuring their European hit single Silver Cloud, La DÜsseldorf's debut record is classic Krautrock on par with the best offerings of Neu!, Kraftwerk and Can.

    Roedelius: Remixes

Hans-Joachim Roedelius is one of the prime movers in the strand of experimental music that emerged from 1970s Germany sometimes referred to as "kosmische music". As a founding member of the highly influential groups Cluster and Harmonia, he was part of a vibrant scene that included Neu!, Kraftwerk and Can. He started releasing solo work in 1978, combining his minimal piano style with electronic production details. In the 1990s he collaborated with Italian musicians Nicola Alesini (saxophone) and Fabio Capanni (guitar) in 'ambient jazz trio' Aquarello, who released three albums, the final installment being issued by All Saints. Whilst overseeing the reissue of a vast archive of seminal albums, Roedelius shows no signs of slowing down as he enters his eighth decade.

What a difference two years can make ... Between their self-titled debut and this follow-up, Electric Wizard beefed up and distorted their sound and polished their song-writing and the result has taken them light years beyond what the first album achieved. For this reason alone, anyone interested in the band's history and how a young group can progress in leaps and bounds, these two albums are worth seeking out and hearing. The most obvious improvement in the band's style is the overall sound: thick and grimy textures in slower-than-slow guitar chords and riffs, accompanied by basic drum rhythms and a washed-out wailing vocal singing lyrics of despair at the present world and conjuring avenues of escape from the social and political oppression in our society.

We dive straight into the deep end with Return Trip, a crusty doom sludge song if ever there was one, with black grime peeling off riffs to expose a raw layer that quickly changes to hard and dark and bleeds off in turn. The song sticks to the straight and narrow: even an extended instrumental passage doesn't attract a wiggly guitar solo, and it's only towards the end the song acquires layers of melody and riffing to suggest the vocalist's increasing mental derangement. Jus Oborn's singing isn't great - it's more like chanting or shouting sometimes - but his voice has a rough, anguished edge suited to the lyrical content. Real life is cold, hard, tyrannical, unjust and abusive and for many people the only way to stay sane is to escape into one's own world through the portal of hallucinogenic drugs. Wizard in Black and Doom-Mantia take up where Return Trip leaves off: these are epic tracks that extend the sludge / stoner doom trip out further into the realms of psychedelia, the latter track featuring treated vocals and multi-tracked voices (or so they sound).

Ivixor B / Phase Inducer is a wonderfully trippy mindfuck of a piece featuring a seemingly endless loop of female chanting with bubbly guitar effects and lazy bass rhythm followed by an abstract spacey tone piece that probably fell from an old pre-Autobahn Kraftwerk album and needed a home, so why not here. The atmosphere is spooky without appearing sinister. The two separate passages of the track are combined in a way that suggests a breakdown in a spaceship's communications with Earth while the astronauts are overcome by strange cosmic forces that can't be understood by rational people. Very original and quite ingenious!

The remaining tracks on the album suffer for being footnotes to the instrumental track and the strong first half of the album. Son of Nothing is hardcore melodic rock with metal trimmings in style and its post-apocalyptic / sci-fi lyrics embody both hope and fear as the remnants of humanity flee a scorched Earth to find a new home. Solarian 13 brings up the rear with a mix of gently buoyant and seesawing grime-thickened guitar rhythms around which trippy ambient effects swirl and tease.

The album draws its strength from a more streamlined musical approach in which music serves to enhance each song and its subject rather than fill out empty spaces with frills or show off individual musicians' dexterity and master of their instruments; and also from powerful lyrical themes of alienation, global destruction and flight to new worlds whether internally in one's head as a form of escape or externally for survival. Fantasy, the apocalypse and its aftermath, and science fiction elements of space travel through drugs and spaceships, and human migration to new worlds combine with doom, stoner and sludge metal to generate an original piece of work in Come My Fanatics .... It's on this album that EW find their calling.

    Chants

Chants is the debut album by Seattle multi-instrumentalist / singer Nouela. Born to Norwegian & Korean parents, Nouela spent the first her first 11 years living in Korea and learning to love what her parents played - Beach Boys, Pet Shop Boys, Beatles, Kraftwerk, Monk, Mingus. Nouela spent her teens and early twenties fronting bands (Mon Frere, People Eating People) and recording & touring with other Seattle Bands (The Fall Of Troy, Say Hi, Schoolyard Heroes, Cursive). After working w/ some amazing musicians & producers Nouela decided to change things up and play most everything on Chants.

    Minimalists

In the 1960s, something happened to classical music. A bold new American voice emerged, pushing away the intricate, atonal forms of the European avant-garde and drawing on the music that most people were actually listening to. The scene led to composers having bona fide hits (Reich's Music For 18 Musicians), and aiming to do so: Philip Glass's album 'Glassworks', which featured Façades, was created with the chief aim of appealing to a much wider audience. Glass added lyricism, power and brooding emotion to the minimalist sound, though he prefers to call his work 'repetitive structures.' You can trace a line from the pulsating, stripped-down sounds of Reich, Glass and Adams to the clarity and repetition of Kraftwerk, and on through just about every type of electronic music you could ever dance to.

This limited-edition LP celebrates the state of minimalism 50 years after the movement broke down barriers in classical music.

    Other People's Songs Vol. 1

Over the weekend of August 21-22, 2010, not long after Damien Jurado and Richard Swift first collaborated to produce Damien's 2010 record, Saint Bartlett, the pair hunkered down with a 4-track recorder and one Coles 4038 ribbon microphone to record a collection of cover songs that run the gamut from John Denver to Chubby Checker to Kraftwerk.

The timing was perfect. On Other People's Songs Vol 1, we can see the scaffolding of what would become a creative turning point for the pair - later seen with the release of Damien Jurado's Maraqopa, the first record in his Maraqopa trilogy - less than 2 years later. The opening drum hits of Be Not So Fearful, the falsetto vocals of Sweetness, and the Spaghetti-Western swing of Radioactivity are, by now, hallmarks of the Jurado/Swift sound, but Other People's Songs Vol 1 is a transitional fossil, a marking of the pair's collaborative evolution.

Pfarmers is the new project from Danny Seim (Menomena, Lackthereof), Bryan Devendorf
(The National), and Dave Nelson (David Byrne & St. Vincent, Sufjan Stevens).

Danny and Bryan have been friends since The National and Menomena toured together
in the early 2000s. Their paths crossed several times since then, most recently backstage
at a festival, where Bryan showed Danny some severly damaged, synth-affected
drumbeats he had recorded with his friend Dave, sho was currently playing horns in David
Byrne's band. Shortly after, Pfarmers was born.

According to Seim, "The record is about a dream I had where I'm reluctantly accepting a
fear of drowning by focusing on being reincarnated as a giant Gunnera plant, which thrive
on the banks of rivers (specifically the Jordan River i.e. the Biblical promised land) after I
paint myself gold and sink to the bottom like the El Dorado of South American folklore."

Despite the notoriety of it's members, Pfarmers sounds unlike anything they've produced
before. The first track "Benthos" is a sprawling ambient piece comprised of looping,
layered horns. The album then launches into a set of pop songs, reminiscent of Lackthereof
(Danny's solo project), as played by Kraftwerk. Devendorf's trademark drum style is
present, but here they're filtered so heavily as to sound mechanical. Seim contributes
layered vocals, and thick bass brooves, while Nelson provides complex spatial arrangements.

It's a diverse record, switching swiftly between catchy pop songs and long instrumental
breaks. It's a rich and rewarding album, for those willing to dive in.

    Many Levels of Laughter

    Clear Vinyl

The appeal of J. Fernandez and his music is summed up right there in the name - he's a bit mysterious. It isn't that he's hiding anything, he's only just revealing what he wants to, keeping the remainder close to his chest. Likewise, there's a certain, undeniable feeling associated with his songwriting, but describing it is easier said than done. That's because there are plenty of familiar touchstones and influences deep in the songs; intricately woven, Marquee Moon guitars, an affectless, Kraftwerk-ian singing style, psychedelic dissonance and melodic structures not entirely unlike The United States of America, and a modern warmth like Chris Cohen's work with The Curtains and Deerhoof. But, dropping these names doesn't adequately sum up what J. Fernandez has captured here. On Many Levels of Laughter, he's invited us into his own, very special, Universe. One that presumably exists only in his head, or at the very least in the Chicago bedroom where he recorded the album, alone.

Giving yourself over to this record for 32-or-so minutes is a bit like agreeing to Gene Wilder's version of The Wondrous Boat Ride, you're going to experience things you don't expect. Some of it will be immediately wonderful, some of it will be confusing and magnificent. Only, instead of a nightmare-fueled, psychotropic freak-out, it feels more like a Brian Wilson daydream, magically stepping into the scraps of tape and interlude left on the cutting room floor once they finally got around to assembling SMiLE.

    The Idiot

The Idiot is the debut solo album by American rock singer Iggy Pop. It was the first of two LPs released in 1977 which Pop wrote and recorded in collaboration with David Bowie. Sessions for the album were begun prior to the recording of the first installment in Bowie's Berlin Trilogy, Low (1977), and The Idiot has thus been called the unofficial beginning of Bowie's Berlin period. Drawing on the electronic sounds of German groups such as Kraftwerk, The Idiot is a departure from the hard rock of Pop's former band the Stooges and has been compared to Bowie's contemporaneous albums in its treated instrument sounds and introspective atmosphere.

The album is regarded by critics as one of Pop's best works but is not generally considered representative of his output. Its title was inspired by Dostoyevsky's novel The Idiot, three of the participants in the recording-Bowie, Pop and Tony Visconti-being familiar with the book. The album has been characterized as a major influence on subsequent post-punk, industrial, and gothic artists.

Library Catalog Music Series Volume 7: Music For Paradise Armor

Instruments of Science & Technology's Richard Swift (born Ricardo Sigilfredo Olivarez Swift-Ochoa, 1977) lives in the NW region of the U.S. He's made lots of different music. He normally sings, but not here. Music for Paradise Armor was made on varying mediums, a Tascam 4-track, an Otari 50/50 8-track, a 16-track machine by Studer and computer by Macintosh. There are, what Swift calls, modern clickity-clacks, zzzoops s s s and the occasional bleep bleep blaaaaap here. These sounds aim to reflect tech-centric life in the West.

When a broken finger hampered his ability to fret a guitar properly, Richard Swift returned to project B., an electronic endeavor titled Instruments of Science & Technology. Swift's second release under this moniker is a part of Asthmatic Kitty's Library Catalog Music series, and like the other volumes (which include contributions by Roberto Carlos Lange and James McAlister) it is comprised of meditative background instrumentals. Following format, Volume 7: Music for a Paradise Armor is a throwback to the spaced-out electronica and analog synthesizer sounds of the `70s. It's an unintrusive type of soundtrack that never demands attention, but washes by in a quick rush. Recorded using entirely analog equipment and tape machines (with some Mac Book assistance) the songs are filled with thumping ping-pong beats and synthesized textures that bear a resemblance to the deceptively complex soundscapes of Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk, or the Moog-style blips of circuit wizards Bruce Haack and Hot Butter. Comparatively, this outing is a little more ambient and sparse than the Music from the Films of R/Swift was, with an otherworldly German flavor. It's also other-timely; evoking a time when video games were played with paddles, presumably in a room with shag carpeting. ~ Jason Lymangrover

First Authorized Vinyl Edition Of 1983 Debut Studio Album In 25 Years

    Re-Mastered With Original Cover Art

"This is all slabs of sound, rhythm and screaming/testifying. What more do you need? In a way, it was a reaction against Punk (and just about any other music you can think of), and the conservative notion that 3 chords were somehow necessary. I used to deny it vehemently at the time, but No Wave (I "hated" that scene too, for some reason I can't remember now) played a big role as the germ from which this music grew, along with The Stooges and Throbbing Gristle, of course. I wanted Swans to be "heavier" though - I wanted the music to obliterate - why, I don't remember! I think it just felt good. Live, we used two basses (playing utterly unmusical chords that were stabbed and left to sustain or sometimes hit in staccato or opposing rhythms), drums, a "percussionist" that slammed down on a metal table with a metal strap, crude cassette loops of various sounds/noises (usually some kind of undefined ROAR), and Norman Westberg's glorious sustained and screaming guitar chords. It was pretty elating to play live - for us. If 100 people showed up (which would have been a huge audience at the time - 20 was more the average), 80 were guaranteed to leave by the second song. Somehow that tension - contempt or indifference from the audience - was nourishing, so we kept going.

Here's some music I was listening to at the time: Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV, The Stooges, Brian Eno, Teenage Jesus And The Jerks, DNA, The Contortions, Glenn Branca, Black Flag, early Pink Floyd, This Heat, Kraftwerk, The Germs, Cabaret Voltaire, Can, Public Image LTD., SPK "
