Kris Kristofferson had a belated start of a great recording career when he was in his mid thirties, releasing Kristofferson in 1970. The Nashville star distinguished himself from other Country acts, taking on a political stance lyrically that exceeded Nashville standards. Songs on Kristofferson were picked up by fellow artists Johnny Cash ("Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down") and Janis Joplin ("Me And Bobby McGee") recognizing his stature as a songwriter instantly. The Austin Sessions (Remastered)In the summer of 1997, Kris Kristofferson spent a few days in Texas recording stripped-down versions of his best-known songs. Released by Atlantic Records in 1999, The Austin Sessions pairs the acclaimed outlaw country songwriter with a band of studio aces and guest harmony vocalists for intimate versions of classics like Me and Bobby McGee, Why Me? and Sunday Morning Coming Down.
Rhino Records celebrates these powerful recordings with a remastered vinyl version of The Austin Sessions.
Kristofferson recorded The Austin Sessions at Arlyn Studios in Texas with a group of session veterans from Los Angeles and Nashville who were hand-picked by Mollin, who also plays acoustic guitar on the album. Kristofferson's longtime touring guitarist Stephen Bruton appears on several songs as well.
Mollin recalls: I knew in my heart that I could pull off a great under-produced production and give Kris the album he always wanted to make: one that felt like it had the uniqueness and rootsy feeling that Dylan accomplished on his early electric albums.
Several guests join Kristofferson on the album, including Jackson Browne (Me And Bobby McGee), Steve Earle (Sunday Morning Coming Down), Vince Gill (Help Me Make It Through The Night), Catie Curtis (Nobody Wins), and Mark Knopfler (Please Don't Tell Me How The Story Ends).1. ADAD-OMN-6143xHarry Dean Stanton
Partly FictionNo doubt, you've seen Harry Dean Stanton in at least one of his 250 films. But have you heard him sing?
The many facets of Harry Dean Stanton are explored
in Harry Dean Stanton: Partly Fiction, a documentary
directed by Sophie Huber, that has been screened at
over 50 festivals, both internationally and in the US
(including its stateside premiere at SXSW in 2013.) It
documents the iconic actor in his intimate moments and
features film clips, as well as Stanton performing his
own heart-breaking renditions of American folk songs.
The film explores Stanton's enigmatic outlook on his
life, his unexploited talents as a musician, and includes
scenes with David Lynch, Wim Wenders, Sam Shepard,
Deborah Harry, Kris Kristofferson, and others.
Omnivore Recordings is pleased to bring Stanton's
musical talents to light with the soundtrack to this
This release contains the two tracks from Omnivore's
Record Store Day 7 picture disc, "Tennessee Whiskey," a
cover of the 1983 George Jones hit, and a new version of
"Canción Mixteca," the Mexican folk song Stanton originally
recorded with Ry Cooder for 1984's Paris, Texas (winner
of the Palme d'Or at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival and
directed by Wenders). This full-length soundtrack features
other classic covers, like "Blue Bayou," "Danny Boy," and
"Help Me Make It Through The Night," written by Stanton
friend (and contributor to the film) Kris Kristofferson.
Just as Harry Dean Stanton marries images and music,
Partly Fiction will appeal to fans of not only Stanton,
but all film and music. This release is a representative
portrait of one of the world's greatest artists, a familiar
face and a distinctive voice.1. Blue Bayou

Live From Austin, TX (Kris Kristofferson)Kris Kristofferson has an unusual resumÉ. Brownsville, Texas-born, football star and Golden Gloves boxer in college, Rhodes scholar at Oxford, Army captain and chopper pilot, studio janitor, part-time bartender, leading man opposite Barbra Streisand and Jane Fonda. But on his passport, under occupation, it reads songwriter. And that more than anything sums up the essence of Kris Kristofferson. His songs have been recorded by at least 500 other artists, from Willie and Johnny (Cash) to Janis Joplin and Ray Charles, but only that gravelly baritone of his can truly render those songs the way they were meant to be heard, from somewhere deep down in the heart of the man himself. This performance from September 1981 captures Kris in his prime. As he put it at the time, the music's a little closer to the soul because I'm creating and controlling the whole show. Classics like Me and Bobby McGee, Loving Her Was Easier, Why Me?, and Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down take on a whole new meaning coming from the man who wrote and lived the words.
This is the show that almost wasn't. As I was about to introduce Kris, the studio descended into total darkness. Apparently an errant rodent chewed through a major power line and the result was a black-out that lasted all night. The audience was led out by flashlight singing the ACL theme and Kris hung out on the roof with the crew. Fortunately, he came back the next night, and the resulting magic is here to enjoy.

American RecordingsIn 1994 Cash stunned the music world with this commanding collection of 13 solo acoustic performances that roll from gospel to cowboy to sarcastic folk.
Minimalism had long been Cash's meal ticket, but this time around, producer Rick Rubin stripped it all away, recording the bulk of the record in Cash's
cabin or his own living room (two cuts were captured live at the Viper Room in front of an emphatic audience). Cash offers five typically direct and vivid
originals, but he also seizes control of songs by Kris Kristofferson, Nick Lowe, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, and Loudon Wainwright. Forty years after Hey
Porter, Cash delivers a pure, naked, and incredibly moving record that, dare we say, rivals the impact of his greatest achievements. --Marc Greilsamer
Johnny Cash had already recorded some of the most important Country albums in the history of the genre, yet, although he was still making quality music
throughout the '80s, record sales and label support were the lowest he'd ever experienced in his entire career. By the early '90s, he was without a label for
the first time in four decades. Longtime fan, label owner and producer Rick Rubin stepped in, asked Johnny to return to his roots and together, they recreated
the legend of the Man In Black. Features Cash performing his own compositions as well as songs from Loudon Wainwright, Leonard Cohen, Nick
Lowe, Tom Waits and Glenn Danzig. American Recordings earned Johnny a 1995 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. A stunning return

Four Legendary Country Artists In One Super-group: Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings And Kris Kristofferson
Featuring The Hit-Singles Highwayman And Desperados Waiting For A Train
The Highwaymen were a country music super-group composed of four of the biggest outlaw country artists: Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson. The band was active as a group between 1985 and 1995.
In 1984, Glen Campbell first played the song Highwayman for Johnny Cash. The four were all together in Switzerland doing a television special and decided that they should do a project together. While the four were recording their first album, Marty Stuart again played the song for Cash, saying it would be perfect for them-four verses, four souls, and four of them.
Campbell then played the song and the quartet had the name for their new super-group The Highwaymen, the name of their first album, Highwayman, and the name of their first single. The four thought it was a perfect name for them because they were always on the road and all four had the image of being outlaws in country music.
Both the album and the single eventually reached the top spot on the country music charts.
Their remake of Guy Clark's Desperados Waiting for a Train reached the Top 20. (Clark is frequently referred to as The Fifth Highwayman.)

If You Could Read My MindLimited Edition 180 Gram Vinyl
Canadian singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot emerged from the 1960s folk world, and had as much in common with Ian & Sylvia, Eric Andersen, and Bob Dylan as he did with any '70s AM wonder. Though the title track of IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND was indeed his first massive pop hit, the album proves that Lightfoot was a serious, substantive song craftsman. Minstrel of the Dawn is a Mr. Tambourine Man-like affair that closes on a surprisingly sarcastic note. Sit Down Young Stranger and Cobwebs & Dust are the folkiest cuts, and each bears an incisive, poetic lyricism. The bluesy Baby It's Alright and a cover of Kris Kristofferson's Me and Bobby McGee showcase Lightfoot's rootsier tendencies, while Saturday Clothes stands out by virtue of it's Bacharach-like melody and dinner-jacket chord progression. While he wasn't as edgy as fellow Canuck Leonard Cohen, Lightfoot was clearly a formidable song-poet.1. Minstrel Of The Dawn

Live At The Isle Of Wight 1970Import
Over 40 summers ago on August 31, 1970, 35-year-old Leonard Cohen was awakened at 2 a.m. from a nap in his trailer and brought onstage to perform with his band at the 3rd annual Isle Of Wight music festival.
The audience of 600,000 was in a fiery and frenzied mood, after turning the festival into a political arena, trampling the fences, setting fire to structures and equipment and stoked by the most incendiary performance of Jimi Hendrix's career, less than three weeks before his death.
As Cohen followed Hendrix's set, onlookers (and fellow festival headliners) Joan Baez, Kris Kristofferson, Judy Collins and others stood sidestage in awe as the Canadian folksinger-songwriter-poet-novelist quietly tamed the crowd. Take a listen and be amazed by this live recording.LP1

The 'road-dog' troubadour is still going strong at 78!His new album 'Heroes' is a testament to his status: a beautiful collection of popular pop-country songs, covers of classic songs from the 30's & 40's and new songs. It features guest appearances from amongst others: Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard, Snoop Dogg & Sheryl Crow. Brandi describes this project as ...a David and Goliath story. Since becoming a mother, the reality of a child s beautiful little life being torn apart by war felt like too big of a problem for me. My greatest hope is that it ends up becoming the soundtrack to some perfect romance, or at the very least a great cocktail party," says Jill Barber of her new album, 'Fool's Gold. Jill - aka "Canada's sweetheart" - is a two-time Juno Award nominee and Montreal Jazz Fest headliner whose last album hit #1 on the iTunes Jazz charts, and landed her a national segment with NPR. She has collaborated with Josh Ritter, Ron Sexsmith, and Kris Kristofferson has called her a "damn good songwriter." She also published a children's book, entitled 'Music is for Everyone,' this May. 'Fool's Gold' explores every nook of Jill's musical history: sultry torch songs, Hank Williams-inspired ballads, an homage to the golden era of the Brill Building, Motown and beyond. Lead single "Broken For Good" ventures into the early days of Motown with its strong backbeat, horns, a driving bass line and immediate pop appeal. She channels Patsy Cline on "The Careless One," a bittersweet Western, full of resignation and sorrow. As Jill puts it, "It hurts me to sing it, just a little. But that's how I know it is a keeper." Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real (Awaiting Repress)Since their formation as teenagers 10 years ago, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real have quietly developed into one of America's most dazzling new live acts, playing hundreds of shows and major festivals all over the world, attracting a deeply devoted underground following.
Still, with a bounty of invaluable experience under their belts, nothing foretold the artistic leap of Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real their new, self-titled album, a mesmerizing, emotionally genuine, endlessly rewarding work of cosmic country soul set for release via Fantasy Records.
Recorded at The Village Studios in West Los Angeles Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real was produced by John Alagia (Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer) and features the band's new six-piece line-up: Lukas Nelson (guitar, vocals), Tato Melgar (percussion), Anthony LoGerfo (drums), Corey McCormick (bass, vocals) along with new members Jesse Siebenberg (steel guitars, Farfisa organ, vocals) and Alberto Bof (piano, Wurlitzer, B3). Jess Wolfe and Holly Lessig of the indie-pop group Lucius contribute background vocals on five tracks evoking Exile on Main St.'s ecstatic, gospel-rooted harmonies, and Lady Gaga added stirring background vocals to Carolina and Find Yourself. Elsewhere, the lilting, Glen Campbell inspired gem, Just Outside of Austin features a guitar solo from Lukas' dad, country music icon Willie Nelson, and piano from his 86-year-old Aunt Bobbi.
The new album includes 12 Lukas Nelson originals that draw on his country and rock lineage including literate Texas songsmiths like his father and 'uncles' Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings, along with the enduring influence of J.J. Cale, The Band, Clapton-era Delaney & Bonnie and of course, his mentor Neil Young.
Young, an essential member of the POTR family, met the band after he caught them at Farm Aid several years back. Neil got in touch after that, and we started talking by email, Lukas recounts. Eventually, he asked us to record with him. We fell in love with each other musically, one thing led to another and we became Neil's band.
I knew I had a lot of good songs that transcended the cultural boundaries between rock & roll and country, Lukas says of his vision for the album. We owe a lot to Neil; we made this record after coming off the road with him for two years. Neil's been mentoring us, and we've been absorbing that energy, and I think it shows. We got acclimated to a different level of artistic expression. I wanted to get the songs as pure as they could be. We've grown.
Set Me Down on a Cloud, the soulful, country-rock epic that opens the album features Lucious' angelic background vocals and Lukas' lovely, lyrical guitar solo as the band stretches out behind him. Forget About Georgia unfolds to a Layla-like outpouring of yearning, as it vividly retraces the turbulent, bittersweet final stages of a doomed love affair. Lukas delivers a full-throttle vocal on the closing track, If I Started Over, a Roy Orbison-inspired rumination of tender devotion. The R&B grind of Find Yourself is a particular triumph as Lukas and Lady Gaga weave an impassioned, romantic ultimatum.1. Set Me Down On A Cloud

1971's Pearl Showcases Janis Joplin at Her Peak: Chart-Topping Record Includes Hits Me and Bobby McGee, Mercedes Benz, and Get It While You Can
Mastered From the Original Master Tapes: Mobile Fidelity 45RPM Pressing is Definitive-Sounding Analog Version of Masterpiece Ranked #135 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time
Joplin Displays Balance of Impeccable Timing, Devastating Vulnerability, and Raw Emotion: Full Tilt Boogie Band, Producer Paul Rothchild Complete Album Steeped in Soul and Loaded With Spirit
Janis Joplin wouldn't be denied on Pearl. The powerhouse vocalist had kicked her addictions, teamed with a stupendous band, and partnered with a producer that knew how to best showcase her voice on record. She came to the sessions with an armload of astonishing songs, and a burst of creative energy that mirrored her rejuvenated emotional state and undeniable spirit. You can hear it on every note of the 1971 record. Ranked #135 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list, Pearl sold more than four million copies and stands as the first female rock superstar's definitive studio work. Mobile Fidelity's 180g 45RPM 2LP presents the lasting artwork like never before.
Mastered from the original master tapes, cut at 45RPM, and pressed on dead-quiet vinyl at RTI, the iconic audiophile label's analog reissue takes Joplin and Co.'s stupendous performances to newly transcendent levels. Boasting a fidelity that further magnifies the singer's passion and producer Paul A. Rothchild's clear production, this pressing benefits from increased spaciousness, dynamics, and openness afforded by the wider grooves. Joplin's husky, strong, and penetrating singing has never sounded so vibrant or made deeper connections. Warm, organic, and free of any artificial ceilings, this version lets you step into Sunset Sound Recorders with the performers, such is the degree of realism and authenticity. Indeed, few, if any words, describe Joplin better than authentic, and her spirit comes to life on this 2LP set in positively transcendent fashion. Like its headliner, this pressing leaves it all on the floor.
While Joplin's electrifying vocal prowess is universally lauded - she's recognized as the greatest white female blues singer the world has ever seen - her mix of compassion, confidence, and charm play as large a role in attracting listeners and keeping them ensnared more than four decades after her tragic death. And on Pearl, she burrows into deeper stylistic veins, teasing out sides of her persona and craft she'd never previously displayed. Her signature desperation, sadness, and vulnerability remain - the harrowing, lonely wail that begins her soul-ravishing take on Jerry Ragovoy's Cry Baby, underlined with a Wall of Sound-like piano accompaniment, could only come from a person severely scarred by loss and disappointment - yet Joplin also reveals a sense of humor and beatnik innocence that helped propel the album to the top of the charts for nine straight weeks.
Playfully introduced as a song of great social and political import, the acapella Mercedes Benz reflects Joplin's throaty timbre as well as her enhanced, sunnier mood. Similarly, her definitive read of Kris Kristofferson's Me and Bobby McGee signals a laidback demeanor and a move into country strains, with the delivery as natural, carefree, and loving as any in the rock canon. As she does throughout the record, Joplin invests her all in the narrative so that there's no line between the performer and the song. She makes everything on Pearl feel autobiographical, and by extension, gut-wrenchingly honest, and devastatingly intimate. Joplin achieved these feats often during her brief career, yet there are differences on Pearl, chiefly among them her balance of impeccable timing and raw emotion. Heart-aching anthems such as A Woman Left Lonely offer both grit and control, subtlety and attack, resulting in cathartic releases distinguished with originality, personality, and instinctual passion.
Pearl remains Joplin's finest hour, with credit also owed to the Full Tilt Boogie Band - the only group she ever considered to be her own - as well as the Doors alum that sat behind the boards. Joplin and Rothchild both admitted to sharing a common bond and understanding, with the latter inheriting the role of teacher and Joplin, a willing student ready to discover how she could use her voice in new, more expressive ways. The fruits of the pair's labors fill Pearl, be it the guardedly optimistic Get It While You Can or assertive, fleet-footed Move Over.
Experienced in the new light brought to fore by this definitive Mobile Fidelity analog edition, Joplin's swan song is no longer about a masterpiece that its creator never lived to see finished. Rather, it's about a once-in-a-lifetime vocalist realizing mammoth potential and wringing passion out of every note. It's not a tragedy, but a triumph. Get it while you can.

Johnny Cash was born during the great depression into a poor family in Arkansas. At a very young age, he worked on the family farm and experienced many of life's struggles. This is also the time he would develop his love for music, family and the Bible, which followed him closely throughout his long career.
In the early fifties after spending time in the Air Force, he moved to Memphis, became friends with folks like Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis, and ultimately cut some sides at Sun Studios which became the catalyst that would kick-start the beginnings of a soon to be worldwide superstar, troubadour and humanitarian unlike the world has ever known.
The folks at Columbia Records knew that this young fellow named Johnny Cash was destined for super stardom. They quickly signed the legend to a long-term deal, and his first singles like his Guess Things Happen That Way & Hey Porter etched The Man In Black trademark to his name.
In 1971 after many chart-topping country and pop albums and a bevy of hit singles and Grammy Awards, more fame followed as the brass at Columbia Records honored their journeyman Johnny Cash with his 2nd greatest hits collection, the gold and platinum smash Johnny Cash's Greatest Hits Volume II.
The album was a blockbuster as it hit the Top 5 in the charts, making this a crossover hit with both country and pop audiences, proving once again that his career was of historic merit. Filled with more hits than a roadside jukebox, the amazing album features his biggest hits like the groundbreaking Folsom Prison Blues and his Shel Silverstein classic A Boy Named Sue. The classic top charter duet with June Carter Cash If I Were A Carpenter is also included, followed up by one of his finest interpretations of his dear friend Kris Kristofferson's Sunday Mornin' Comin'Down.
More treasures follow with the country belter Big River and Cash's gospel smash of Daddy Sang Bass, which truly continues the treasure trove of hits contained in this masterwork.
In total, the album showcases eleven important Johnny Cash recordings which have truly gone on to become international classics for all time.

Let Them Fall In LoveThe best-selling and most-awarded female gospel artist of all time, CeCe Winans has long since cemented her status as one of the most accomplished and celebrated women in modern music history. It'd be easy to look back and rest on such illustrious laurels, but Winans has always had her eyes fixed firmly on the future, so it should come as little surprise that she jumped at the opportunity when her son, Alvin Love III, proposed she record the generation-bridging new album 'Let Them Fall In Love.' Her first in nearly a decade, the record finds Winans returning to the studio with gusto, working for roughly three years to craft her most confident, adventurous collection yet.
Recording and performing as both a solo artist and as a duo with her brother BeBe, CeCe has influenced a generation of gospel and secular vocalists over the course of her astonishing career. Her mantel today holds a staggering 10 GRAMMY Awards, 20 Dove Awards, and 7 Stellar Awards. She's been inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the Nashville Music City Walk of Fame, in addition to being named a Trailblazer of Soul by BMI and garnering multiple NAACP Image Awards, Soul Train Awards, Essence Awards, and more. She's sold in excess of 5 million albums in the US, topping the Gospel charts repeatedly while crossing over with smashes like "Count On Me," her stunning duet with Whitney Houston from the multi-platinum 'Waiting To Exhale' soundtrack, which sold 2 million copies and cracked the Top 10 on the Pop, R&B, and Adult Contemporary charts. She touched millions more with inspirational performances everywhere from Oprah to The White House, and even showed off her acting chops on television series like '7th Heaven' and 'Doc.'
While collaborating with family is nothing new for Winans, the recording sessions for 'Let Them Fall In Love" found the Detroit native working for the very first time with her son in the producer's chair.
"Alvin shared with me a vision that he had of a record that was bold and a little different than anything I'd ever done before," remembers Winans. "When I heard the songs he'd been writing, I got so excited. He has great ears and great style and a unique way of writing and thinking things through. It made it extra special that two generations of family were able to come together on this record."
Bringing together generations is Winans' specialty, and she drew inspiration for the album from her extensive work with the young men and women who attend the church she and her husband founded in Nashville.
"It's really important to me to share where I've been and to encourage young people to understand that they can go even further," reflects Winans. "I wanted to make an album that ties us together, something that young people would be able to learn from and be inspired by."
Written primarily by Alvin and co-produced by Alvin along with Winans' long-time collaborator Tommy Sims (Garth Brooks, Michael McDonald, Bonnie Raitt), 'Let Them Fall In Love' was mixed by Dae Bennett (Tony Bennett, Amy Whinehouse, Olivia Newton John) and Jimmy Douglass (Pharrell Williams, Micheal Buble). The album, recorded both in Nashville and New York City, finds Winans more confident than ever before, merging eras and genres in a glorious blend of past and present that simultaneously recalls the heyday of Motown and still sounds undeniably modern. Big band horns meet strings from the Nashville String Machine as Winans' soaring voice hits new heights, fueled in part by the encouragement and motivation of her son.
"Alvin was hard on me in the studio," remembers Winans. "He'd really work me during the songs, and I knew that was a good thing because it meant he was pressing me to get the best performances possible. Now I listen back and I know he was right. It was so important to get the right interpretation of each song."
Winans is able to inhabit each song on the record so fully in part because she's lived their stories. She describes album opener "He's Never Failed Me Yet" as "my personal testimony," "Run To Him" as her frequent act of refuge, and "Marvelous" as a musical embodiment of the black church. On "Hey Devil!," she's joined by fellow gospel powerhouses The Clark Sisters for a playful rebuke of temptation, while "Peace From God" is a prayer for light in an increasingly dark world, and "Lowly" is a lesson about pride and humility aimed at the young men who might need it most. Winans' eclectic ability shines through on the pedal steel country waltz of "Why Me," a song she discovered when she was invited to perform it live with its writer, Kris Kristofferson.
"I ended up getting sick and I couldn't perform it with him at the show, but my son heard it and knew it would be perfect for the album," explains Winans. "It's so different for me in this whole new field of country music, but it spoke to my heart and I felt like it was written just for me."
On the album's other cover, "Dancing in The Spirit," Winans is joined by Hezekiah Walker and his choir for a jubilant celebration, while "Never Have To Be Alone" finds her taking a far more somber approach, singing to the young members of her congregation. It's the album's closer and title track, though, that seems to light Winans up more than any other.
"That was the first song for this album and I knew right away that I wanted the record to be named 'Let Them Fall In Love,'" she explains. "I told my son that it had to be the heartbeat of the album. There's a lot of different styles and a lot of strong messages on there, but all of them are to bring us to this point. It's why I came back and recorded another album, to express my heart and my desire that people young and old can listen and fall in love with the higher power, fall in love with love, and fall in love with faith and joy and peace."1.
