    La La Land

It's not easy to label the kind of music Plants and Animals make, but it's easy for it to feel instantly familiar. Maybe that's because they record to tape, and their records sound like they could have been made in 1972. But for all their analog warmth, it's also impossible to deny how raw and recent the songs sound. Their latest offering La La Land is louder and tougher than their debut Parc Avenue, but it also showcases the band at their smoothest and most cohesive.

Co-founded ten years ago by percussionist Bruce Cawdron (Godspeed You! Black Emperor) and cellist Rebecca Foon (Thee Silver Mt. Zion), Esmerine enters its second decade with the new album, La Lechuza and an expanded line-up which includes harp-player Sarah Page and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Barr.

La Lechuza documents the evolution of Esmerine under the influence of this expanded membership, and is dedicated to beloved and internationally-renowned Montreal-based singer Lhasa de Sela, who died on New Year's Day 2010 at the age of 37. The album includes the posthumous track Fish On Land, an alternate version of the song that she recorded with Emserine and on which she sings.

While primarily tracked in Patrick Watson's loft in Montreal, La Lechuza was mixed by Mark Lawson (Arcade Fire, The Unicorns, Islands) with the exception of three tracks. La Lechuza also features guest appearances by Sarah Neufeld (Arcade Fire) and Colin Stetson.

Latin GRAMMY nominees Kinky's new album 'Sueño de la Maquina' was produced and mixed by legendary Dust Brother, John King, who has produced Beck, Rolling Stones and Beastie Boys. The album was mastered by Howie Weinberg, whose credits include iconic albums like Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Nirvana's Nevermind and U2's Pop.

More than 10 years ago, Kinky submitted a demo to the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC), where they ended up winning the conference's prestigious LAMC Discovery Contest. At LAMC, Kinky first connected with British producer Chris Allison (The Beta Band, Coldplay) and recorded their self-titled debut album, which was received with rave reviews from both international and domestic press. The album featured massive hit songs such as "Mas" and "Soun Tha Mi Primer Amor".

Kinky's music has been featured in numerous soundtracks, TV commercials (Motorola, Smirnoff Ice, Nissan, Honda), and video games like EA Sports
'FIFA and Tiger Woods' PGA Tour. The band's popularity is palpable in each of its concerts. Their popular live shows have allowed the band to tour around the world, performing at Coachella, New Orleans' Jazz Fest, Voodoo Fest, Bumbershoot, Outside Lands and many more.

    Promised Land Sound

The self-titled debut by Promised Land Sound (formerly Promised Land) finds the young Nashville band cooking up some serious red dirt/swamp boogie and country-fried choogle à la Jim Ford, Link Wray, and Dennis Linde, with tunes that are singularly propulsive, but reflectively rooted in the finest vernacular Southern songcraft. Co-produced by Jem Cohen, Andrija Tokic, and Merge artist William Tyler, who also guests on guitar, this album follows a live 7 released on Jack White's Third Man Records.

The To Live and Die in L.A. soundtrack is Wang Chung's third album and second on Geffen Records. Instead of
following up on the success that Points on the Curve landed them, the band switched gears to produce an original
motion picture soundtrack. The switch allowed for them to experiment with different styles of music from the
conventional pop music on their previous album. Released in 1985, only the album's title song made it on the US

    The End Of That

The End of That is Plants and Animals' third album, following their breakthrough debut, Parc Avenue, and 2010's La La Land. It showcases the band in an intimate, almost live-off-the-floor setting. While there's no shortage of catchy electric guitar riffs, as evidenced on lead single Lightshow, the album also showcases lead singer Warren C. Spicer on piano, and plenty of acoustic guitar, an early touchstone of the band that had been given a break on the last record.

Fans of Plants and Animals' early acoustic work will feel right at home with songs like Before, Song for Love and the title track while lovers of the band's multi-part excursions won't be disappointed either. Side A and B of the album end and begin with their own respective anthemic monsters in Crisis! and 2010. The End of That was engineered by Lionel Darrenne (Feist).

    Bootstraps

Bootstraps is a singer/songwriter/alt-rock band formed in LA, fronted by Jordan Beckett.

Liza Richardson award winning music supervisor and KCRW DJ, calls Bootstraps her, Secret weapon that no one else really knows about. It's true,
Bootstraps are relatively unknown to the public, however they've racked up a string of high profile TV and film placements, landed on elite top-10 Best
Album of the Year lists, garnered awards and won over the industry's most selective audience. Their debut has built momentum from what Liza calls an
instantly likable, intelligent and signature sound that the Examiner labeled as Americana-laced gorgeousness and Paste Magazine paralleled to Ray
La Montayne, with hints of Bon Iver and Band of Horses .

After being named Hydrogen Magazine's "Band to Watch" singer Jordan Beckett spoke about their unique recording process. We tracked the album live,
the old fashioned way with help from Richard Dodd (Civil Wars, Kings of Leon) who enhanced this vision in the studio.

The singer concluded, Live recording as a full band is just that, it's alive, making it possible to capture moments and the feeling that makes music music.
That feeling has translated on ABC, NBC and CBS shows and at the Nashville Film Festival where the band took home the prestigious 'Best Music in a
Film award. These accolades have merely set the stage for their debut album to break out beyond music industry insiders.

    Timez Are Weird These Days

Following a series of wildly popular independent mixtapes and the Lovers Holiday EP that landed him a performance on The Late Show with David Letterman earlier this year, Timez Are Weird These Days arrives as Theophilus London's most fully realized work to date: a wide-open album of original music, genre bending sound, mesmerizing storytelling and inspired, honest emotion.

Recorded in NYC, LA and Stockholm, Timez Are Weird These Days showcases Theophilus as a rapper and a songwriter working with a small clique of producers. With John Hill, Dave Sitek, Jokke and Ariel Rechstshaid at the controls Theophilus kicks off the album with rap credentials intact on Last Name London before moving through a surprising range of emotion, from party starting dance floor defiance to moments of quiet intimacy and introspection.

Timez Are Weird These Days exclusively features two guest vocalists: indie star Holly Miranda on Love Is Real and Sara Quin of Tegan and Sara on Why Even Try.

    Elwan (Awaiting Repress)

For the last five years, Tinariwen have been busy criss-crossing the globe bringing their
triumpant tours to all five continents and expanding their audience. During this time their
beloved homeland in the Adrar des Ifoghas, a Saharan mountain range that straddles the
border between north-eastern Mali and southern Algeria has, in effect, been transformed
into a conflict zone, a place where nobody can venture without putting themselves in danger.
These conflicts have forced the band into exile to record their 8th album, Elwan.

Elwan means 'the elephants ' - an animal metaphor to describe those 'beasts', whether
militias or multinational consortiums, who have trampled everything in their path: in the
desert, where both the human and ecological equilibriums are extremely fragile.
Tinariwen chose to record this album is several locations around the world, including for 4
days at the desert hideaway of Rancho De La Luna studio in Joshua Tree, CA, the studio
known as a favored refuge for many an eclectic artist from Queens of the Stone Age to
Daniel Lanios to Arctic Monkeys to Iggy Pop and more. For Tinariwen, the geographical
location of the studio proved to be particularly propitious in terms of creativity. And the
human climate was just as favorable.

A few friends dropped in during the sessions to add some magic to a few tracks including,
Kurt Vile (electric guitar), Mark Lanegan ( Vocals on 'Nànnuflày'), Matt Sweeney (electric
guitar) and producer/guitarist, Alain Johannes (Cigarbox guitar). Sessions were also
recorded in Morocco, where the band were accompanied by local musicians, in a land
where they are considered musical legends.

Lovers of those sensual yet abrasive riffs that are Tinariwen's signature won't be disappointed.
But neither will those who love their funky, danceable side, which comes through
loud and clear. All that potential has been wonderfully honed by the album's mixing engineer
Andrew Schepps, known well for his work with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Johnny
    Cash, and Jay Z.

to show how dark the world can be.
    -PITCHFORK

Based in Nashville, but raised in a coal miner's company house on the banks of
Buffalo Creek, WV, Stone Jack Jones is the descendant of four generations of
coal miners. After being rejected from military service in Vietnam due to
epilepsy, and discouraged from pursuing the coal mining business, Jack decided
to start wandering. By the time he landed in Nashville, where he met Roger
Moutenot, Patty Griffin, and Kurt Wagner, Jack had worked as a carny, an escape
artist, a ballet dancer, a professional lute player, and even owned a strip club.

Ancestor was produced in collaboration with Roger Moutenot (known for his
work with Yo La Tengo, Sleater Kinney, and many others), and features contributions by Patty Griffin, and Lambchop members Ryan Norris, Scott Martin, and
Kurt Wagner. Intensely meditative, the album patiently explores the hardness of
the coal mines, the mystery of suicide, the comfort of a dog's acceptance, the
idea that forgetting all you know can be the first step towards hearing and
reconnecting with your muse, and one man's gratitude for the love he's been
given and the life he's had the chance to live.

LOW IN HIGH SCHOOL will be Morrissey's first studio album since
2014 and his debut for BMG. The album will see BMG partnering
with Morrissey on the new release and on the launch of his new
label, Etienne Records. LOW IN HIGH SCHOOL was recorded at
La Fabrique Studios in France and in Rome at Ennio Morricone's
Forum Studios. The record is produced by Joe Chiccarelli (who
has worked with The Strokes, Beck and The White Stripes to
    name a few).

Morrissey's talent for combining political statements and beautiful
melodies is more prevalent than ever on LOW IN HIGH SCHOOL,
capturing the zeitgeist of an ever-changing world.

Rising to prominence as frontman of The Smiths, Morrissey went
on to forge an even more successful career as a solo artist, with
all ten of his solo efforts landing in the Top 10 on the UK album
charts, including 3 entries at the #1 position. Releasing his debut
solo album Viva Hate back in 1988, he has since released a
number of critically acclaimed follow-ups including Kill Uncle and
Your Arsenal, and hugely successful comeback album You Are the

    Ology

The push-and-pull that drives Gallant's music is like a pendulum swinging back and forth between genres and influences. His combination of muscular vocal acrobatics and sonic unpredictability has attracted universal tastemaker praise and a growing fan base. Complex championed the Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter as The R&B game changer, LA Times claimed, Precise writing of Frank Ocean, big vocal runs of Sam Smith, and NME predicted, the voice that will redefine R&B, while Entertainment Weekly, The Fader, Billboard, and more have shown support. Sir Elton John summed it up best saying, Gallant is gonna be huge.

Gallant has been on this pursuit since junior high. Growing up in Columbia, MD, he began tinkering on his computer and making songs after school inspired by everything from nineties R&B to classic jazz and blues. Rather than write in a journal, the music collated his feelings and emotions. He'd rarely share it with friends though. While attending NYU, he enrolled in summer school, so he could graduate early. Post-graduation and countless hours of meticulous practice later, he was finally ready to share his songs to the world at large.

His first online release If It Hurts would establish him in the blogosphere, while 2014's Zebra EP landed him on Spotify's viral charts and at the top of HypeM. Signing to Mind of a Genius in 2015 and relocating to L.A., he dove into creating what would become Ology with co-producers such as Stint. The first single Weight In Gold enjoyed its world premiere on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 Radio show as the introductory entry in the coveted World's First segment. In less than six months, it accumulated over 6.5 million Spotify streams.
As Gallant continues on his search, he leaves a message on the path. If people can hear I'm not doing this to feed any ego or serve someone else, that's all I want, he leaves off. I'm trying to create a photo album I can look back on to see where I've overcome challenges. I'm using music as a means of self-discovery. If my songs help somebody do the same thing or realize art can help us improve ourselves, I'd be honored.

    Primitive And Deadly

Contains Vinyl Only Exclusive Track: Badgers Bane

This deluxe vinyl version of the new Earth studio opus comes in a thick Stoughton old style tip-on jacket with a soft-touch UV varnish.

Primitive And Deadly, is EARTH's tenth studio collection. Dylan Carlson and long term cohort, drummer Adrienne Davies, manage to pull off the trick of completing an Ouroborean creative cycle, twenty-five years in the making, whilst exploring new directions in their music. For the first time in their diverse second act, they allow themselves to be a rock band, freed of adornment and embellishment. As much as Carlson's guitar has always been the focal point of EARTH's music, it's been surrounded by consistently diverse instrumentation. Here the dialog between Carlson and Davies drumming remains pivotal, underpinned by the sympathetic bass of Bill Herzog (Sunn O))), Joel RL Phelps, Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter) and thickened by additional layers of guitar from Brett Netson (Built To Spill, Caustic Resin) and Jodie Cox (Narrows). Perhaps the largest left turn on Primitive And Deadly, though, is prominence of guest vocalists Mark Lanegan and Rabia Shaheen Qazi (Rose Windows) who transform the traditionally free ranging meditations of EARTH into something approaching traditional pop structures.

On Rooks Across the Gates, a song stylistically the closest to the folk inspired modality of Angels Of Darkness, Carlson stretches out into some of his most lyrical playing to date, creating an almost symbiotic relationship between his performance and the vocals of old friend Mark Lanegan. From the Zodiacal Light, meanwhile, takes the late 60s San Franciscan/freaked-out jazz-rock transcendence of The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull and quickly re-appropriates that sound into a musky torch song for the witching hour.

This contradictive tension between a band pushing itself ever-forward whilst surveying their history is reflected in the albums twin recording locales. The foundation of the record was laid in the mystic desert high lands of Joshua Tree, California where EARTH recorded hour after hour of meditations on each tracks central theme at Rancho de la Luna. Upon returning to Seattle these were edited, arranged and expanded upon at Avast with the help of long-term collaborator Randall Dunn (who was previously at the helm for the Hex, The Bees Made Honey In The Lions Skull and Hibernaculum sessions).

Thick, dense and overdriven, melodically rich and enveloping, Primitive And Deadly is EARTH reaffirming their position as a singular point in the history of rock.

"Madi Diaz Writes The Most Danceable Break Up Record Ever" - LA Weekly

"We have to say, this change does her good" - Refinery29

"With infectious structure and an addicting nature, Phantom should quickly find
its way into an already powerfully, lady-driven indie pop movement, ready to kick
down the doors of every local scene" - High Voltage

Indie-pop siren, Madi Diaz's new album Phantom is an open-faced and undeniably honest chronicle of falling
down, getting back up, and heading to the horizon.

Phantom was recorded in Madi's newly adopted home of Los Angeles, produced by Nick Ruth (Mikky Ekko,
Active Child) and mixed by John O'Mahony (Coldplay, Metric, Oh Land) at NYC's famed Electric Lady Studios.
The album's 11 tracks expand upon Madi's brand of sophisticated indie pop songs, providing a soundtrack
for adventurous escapades on sweaty dance floors with old friends or late night introspective drives under a
canopy of stars. Underneath the effervescent pop, her lyrics reveal an emotional through line.

    Zip-A-Dee Doo Dah

One of the most talented acts in Phil Spector's stellar recording stable, Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans featured the great Darlene Love, one of Spector's favorite vocal muses; Fanita James, who also sang alongside Love in the ubiquitous studio vocal group the Blossoms; and Bob B. Soxx himself, aka renowned singer Bobby Sheen, a legend in West Coast R&B circles. The trio's uncanny abilities provided Spector with an ideal vehicle to perfect his musical formula, making the trio's 1963 album Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah one of the most enchanting items in the Philles label catalog.

Recorded in the hallowed environs of L.A.'s Gold Star Studios with backup from the legendary Wrecking Crew, Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah finds the trio cutting loose on a high-energy set that includes the Disney-inspired title hit and the infectious Why Do Lovers Break Each Other's Heart? Love's powerful vocals are also featured on "My Heart Beat a Little Faster and the Jackie DeShannon-penned Jimmy Baby, while the ever-soulful Sheen is showcased on such tunes as Dear (Here Comes My Baby) and Everything's Gonna Be All Right. Meanwhile, a left-field reading of Woody Guthrie's This Land Is Your Land and the album-closing instrumental Dr. Kaplan's Office demonstrate Spector's quirkier side.

    Tactile Galactics

Delivered from its celestial womb to the human world for inevitable elevation, Tactile
Galactics is the new album by Secret Circuit and first full length release from Beats In Space
    Records.

Secret circuit is the guise of Eddie Ruscha Jr., a sometimes sage known and beloved
throughout the Los Angeles creative community. Amongst his earliest musical endeavors,
ruscha co-founded Medicine, an overlooked four piece whose sinister, snarling take on
shoegaze landed them as the first American signing to Creation Records.
After leaving Medicine without a bad taste in his mouth, ruscha's focus shifted from his
shoes to the endless array of LA music stores housing analog synthesizers, drum machines
and effect units forsaken at the advent of digital technology. While establishing his Secret
circuit identity through various self-releases, ruscha was a wingman in notable projects with
Thomas Bullock (Rub 'N' Tug) as Laughing Light of Plenty and with DJ Harvey as Food For Gods.
ruscha likens his studio obsession to "striving for alien sound or rhythm that feels natural."
Between 2011 and 2012, ruscha released no less than four albums, a 12" for Prins Thomas'
Internasjonal Spesial label, a handful of blazing mixes on the Cosmic Papers cassette tape
series, and his debut for Beats in Space records, the Nebula Sphynx / Parascopic Rope 12".

Ever the unsettled settler, ruscha consciously crafted the bulk of Tactile Galactics' tracks at
120 beats per minute. ruscha played with the equalizing value of this boilerplate dance
music BPM in much the same way a DJ might - to set a clear course for transcendence.
Tactile Galactics is derived from a dance lineage promoting feel over form; rhythmically
explored without abandon - or audience - in mind by the krautrock fringe, put to the
slow motion disco test at Daniele Baldelli's cosmic club, jacked into a House format via the
chicago imprint TRAX and honored today via peer psychonauts like Hieroglyphic Being and
    Lindstrøm.

Tactile Galactics unleashes the lysergic choir of voices in ruscha's head against a dance
grid, but makes sure it stays in soulful step. For the first time on a Secret circuit recording,
these voices are quite literally present via ruscha's own vocals, added when "the song
called for them." it's by this same regard of the powerful unknown that makes Tactile
Galactics Secret circuit's most incomprehensibly detailed and stunning release to date.

    The Second Album

Back in 1995, Bay Area rap was at the big-ballin' peak of the mobb music craze, LA was chronically gripped in a G-funk indo smoke haze, Atlanta was
enjoying its Southernplayalistic days, and NYC was entering a shiny-suit phase. There was no frame of reference for two lyrical emcees experimenting
with the tonality and resonance of rhyme patterns. This was uncharted territory. The pairing of Lyrics Born and Lateef the Truthspeaker into Latyrx was an accident, LB recalls. Both emcees were solo artists, but when LB heard the pre-Endtroducing DJ Shadow beat which would become Latyrx' eponymous debut single, his reaction was, Oh my God, I gotta get on this.

Latyrx was a syllabic tour de force which began with two dissonant voices -- one gruff and bassy, the other higher-pitched and trebly, both hella fluid -- it
transmogrified into a harmonic convergence of doubled verses simultaneously assaulting eardrums. Undeniably, it was great... but weird. It was ill,
Lateef recalls. We really felt like we had something unlike anyone else had done, he adds. Latyrx' first and thusfar, only, full-length, 1997's Latyrx: the Album, set the tone for what Solesides and Quannum would do, LB recalls, while 1998's Muzappers Re-Mixes EP spawned one of the only feminist-affirming club bangers in hip-hop history, Lady Don't Tek No.

Though Latyrx never officially broke up, after Muzappers, both members followed their chosen paths to considerable solo success. Yet no matter how
much acclaim each attained individually, the notion of someday making another Latyrx record was always present. It's probably the number one thing I
got asked about in my career, LB says. 16 years (!) after the release of Latyrx: the Album, LB and Lateef have finally answered the prayers of long-starved fans who have begged, pleaded and, by now, tweeted about the possibilities of a reunion. An impromptu Latyrx set at a 2010 Jazz Mafia concert at San Francisco's Mezzanine led to an
appearance at 2011's Outside Lands festival, Google's Summer Concert Series (they were the first ever hip-hop act to perform) and a last minute
appearance as part of HITRECORD At The Movies -- a unique film and music traveling showcase curated and hosted by actor and artist Joseph Gordon-
    Levitt.

Most recently the duo have performed at the Wintersalt Festival in San Francisco last December and toured the United States with super funk group,
Galactic. Having just released a brand new EP titled 'DISCONNECTION' late last year, LB & Lateef are hard at work on the proper follow up to their debut album, a
new record aptly titled, 'THE SECOND ALBUM'.

Featuring a long list of producers and special guests, the album credits read like a music festival with artists from Tune Yards and Forrest Day to
Blackalicious and The Decemberists stepping in to help create one of the most highly anticipated records of all time. What Latyrx brings to the table is a technical difficulty level rare these days in hip-hop and matched only by a few groups in the genre's entire history: Run -DMC, Jurassic 5, Blackstar, Freestyle Fellowship. Their challenging, intricate back-and forth arrangements evoke a lyrical version of bebop, with layer
upon layer of rhythmic syncopation and vocal patterning constantly pushing the envelope.

We have a good chemistry and it's kind of unique, Lateef says. We step up each others' game content, and both of us push each other in the originality
department. What we've talked about is very simply, picking up where we left off, LB explains. The return of Latyrx stands as Very Good News for true hip-hop fans,
lyrical aficionados, boom-bap beatniks, urban bohemians, wee tots in Reeboks, and Muzappers of all shapes, sizes, colors, and ages.

    Until In Excess, Imperceptible UFO

The Besnard Lakes' Until in Excess, Imperceptible UFO had its humble beginnings in mid-2011 and was completed over the course of a year. Ever mindful and attentive to the most subtle and nuanced details, founding band members Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas produced, recorded and mixed at the stalwart Breakglass Studios in Montreal with long time band mates Kevin Laing and Richard White. Eventually mastered by the renowned Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound, this fourth album by The Besnard Lakes' features heavyweight additions by Moonface's Spencer Krug and Mike Bigelow, The Barr Brothers' Sarah Page, the always-enchanting Monica Guenter and the return of Fifth String Liberation Singers' Choir.

The story of the album unfolds its introspection on the endurance of the human spirit during prophetic times as told by a spy or two, maybe more. Each of the eight tracks on the album takes off, coasts, and lands smoothly, with a jubilant slowburn of its own momentum for the benefit of the larger picture. The Besnard Lakes create a distinct and dreamy headspace, an enigmatic and somehow familiar placelessness. It happens in such a way that both the close and casual listener find themselves immersed in the generous sonic vision, one moment as timeless as the next.

    Dreamland

Natalie Bergman has had her picture taken on countless occasions -- hundreds of studio portraits and live shots and backstage festival snaps. But the simple, gorgeous black & white photo of Bergman on the cover of Wild Belle's Dreamland that she describes as just me and this sort of abyss That one was lensed by the person who best knows how to capture her essence on celluloid: Her older brother and bandmate, Elliot Bergman. Besides being Wild Belle's multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire, Elliot has an equally impressive flair for visual arts, from painting and sculpture to bronzemaking and photography. An avid collector of vintage cameras, Elliot brought along a recently acquired Polaroid Land Camera to a show Wild Belle played in Denver this summer: The duo grabbed a quick moment at their hotel to take the portraits of each other that grace the front and back of their new record. The pictures Elliot takes of me are always really beautiful and it's because he knows me better than anyone else on this Earth, says Natalie. Adds Elliot: I like that it's a photo of Natalie just being Natalie. And the stark contrast of her in the foreground with the dark background really fit with these collages she has been doing. Natalie is in the light but the shadows are pretty heavy and you can't really tell where she is or what's back there.

Recorded at studios in their native Chicago, Natalie's new home of Los Angeles, Nashville and Toronto, Dreamland -- Wild Belle's bold, evolutionary new album -- derives from an era in the singer's life when she was struggling to get control of what she describes as the anger and deep sorrow that plagued her at the end of her most recent romantic relationship. For a woman whose music has always been inspired by her desire to translate her complicated feelings into immediately relatable songs, there was certainly plenty of grist for the mill. Dreamland tracks such as Losing You and It Was You (Baby Come Back) offer glimpses of the darkness that Natalie battled during the early months writing for the duo's sophomore full-length. But there are also genuine moments of lightness and ecstatic triumph, like Giving Up On You -- an irresistibly kinetic, punk number Wild Belle recorded with TV On The Radio's Dave Sitek producing.

I was very heated when we were making this record. My body, my heart and my soul were filled with a flame, which sounds very dramatic but it's the truth, says Natalie. I had a healing moment when I moved to LA earlier this year, because I was far away from my ex and I felt like I was getting rid of a lot of baggage. That was the redemptive, triumphant time for my lyrics. On 'Giving Up On You,' I sing: 'Now I smile so bright, you can see me from outer space, look at me shine. Baby it's about time, I was so miserable and now I feel so alive.' All the songs I wrote near the end of making the album have that sentiment: 'Now look at where I am, after all the turmoil that was inside of me, I'm here and I'm happy and I'm ready for whatever comes my way.'

The follow-up to 2013's Isles, Dreamland expands the band's ambitions in every way. It's deeper, it's more fun, it's more haunting, it's got more grooves, Elliot says. There's sorrow and pain but there's also hope and joy -- all those things can coexist in the songs because they coexist in life. He continues: Dreamland, that's not some kind of idealized notion of where we live and I hope people hear that as a question: What is the Dreamland What is our dream here The album doesn't get overtly political, but we're dealing with a lot of the things that are dark about what's happening now. 'Throw Down Your Guns' is about a relationship but is also kind of about the messed up situation that we're in right now. The chorus, 'Throw down your guns / In the name of love, I put my hands up,' to me can be heard in a number of ways, including as a prayer for peace or a cry out against violence.

Importantly, the album also shares its name with one of the first songs Natalie remembers Elliot introducing her to: Bunny Wailer's 1970 reggae classic, Dreamland. One year for Christmas, he gave her a compilation of female artists who recorded at Jamaica's legendary Studio One, and it included Della Humphrey's version of the song. Natalie listened to it over and over and over again. I was so in love with it, she says. From there, I started my exploration of rocksteady and ska and lovers rock and anything that had to do with Jamaican music from the Fifties onward.

The duo started writing music together several years ago, after Elliot took a sixteen year-old Natalie on tour to play percussion with his acclaimed Afrobeat ensemble, NOMO. I can present a song to Elliot and he has this foresight -- he can see things further than I see them, and he helps me realize things, she says. I'd been writing very simple melodic love songs since I was fifteen years old. I definitely have a pop sensibility in my style, and that's a great platform for Elliot to work from, because it's fun for him to have a cool little pop song and combine it with more eccentric sounds and make it into a weird, unique percussive jam. Sometimes he'll bring the jam to me and because we've got this routine together, we can write a song together wherever we are.

Work on the album began in early 2014, in Chicago. The song that opens Dreamland -- Mississippi River -- was also the first one to come together in the studio. It was sparked by a moment of musical serendipity: The record starts with this pulsing ARP drone, says Elliot, which is a very expensive esoteric nerdy synthesizer that's complicated to program. Natalie and I had this weird, symbiotic thing where I was playing three chords off the ARP and she started playing different three chords on this out-of-tune autoharp she brought over. They were both completely in the wrong key, and yet perfectly in tune with each other. That was like the new bar for the record. It was like, 'Yeah, we're going to put synthesizers and saxophone and kalimbas on these songs, and we're going to have lavish string arrangements if we want to. We were getting comfortable with all of the materials that we love, and being like, 'I love this, so let's do it.

They tracked several songs at home in Chicago last year, and then at the start of 2015, Natalie packed all of her belongings into the Wild Belle van and drove from Chicago to Venice, California. She rented a house where Elliot joined her a couple weeks later. When I had my place in Venice, Elliot would wake up earlier than I would and start making dope beats, says Natalie. One day he made this ridiculous song, 'The One That Got Away,' and the beat and underlying track were so exciting that it didn't take very long to write. Our friends came over and were jumping on the tabletops, dancing, getting naked because they loved the song so much.

Playing the new songs at Lollapalooza for the first time with an eight-piece band, says Elliot, I had a feeling onstage that I'd never had before with Wild Belle, where you're part of a sound that's much bigger than you could make on your own. It's this charged-up badass feeling. It's about a groove and rhythmic energy and force and momentum and making a big, dark, deep sound -- something that moves people and makes you want to dance and makes you want to shout. It's tapping into a deeper musicality that I've always been looking for.

Japanese Version - Pressed On Yellow Colored Vinyl
