Ashes of the Wake (Awaiting Repress)

Violence begins to mend what was broken, is not only a lyric taken from Lamb of God's song Omerta, it's a theme that's emblazoned throughout Ashes of the Wake both in message and music, inspired as much by personal trial as by world politics. Lamb of God showcases their 80's thrash roots on Ashes of the Wake by featuring solos from both Testament and Megadeth. At the same time the band plows forward here sampling from the new, the old and adding their own menacing footprint.

    L'Enfant Sauvage

    Orange Colored Vinyl

On its fifth album and first for Roadrunner Records, L'Enfant Sauvage, French heavy metal goliaths Gojira certainly ask their fair share of questions. The title, which literally means The wild child, connotes a big question for singer, songwriter, and guitarist Joe Duplantier.

When you become a musician, you don't have a boss telling you what to do so you have to be very responsible, he affirms. With freedom comes responsibility so I'm asking myself, 'What is freedom? What does it mean to me?' L'Enfant Sauvage reflects on that. There's no answer though. There's just life and questions.

The french quartet have created their most anticipated release - already being heralded from Revolver to Pitchfork to Alternative Press. The album is produced by Josh Silver (Lamb Of God).

    Wall Of Sound (Awaiting Repress)

I thought WALL OF SOUND would be the toughest album I would ever make. I was so satisfied with my previous album, INFERNO, more than I have ever been in my whole career. Musically, sonically, and most importantly, I was satisfied with the melodies and soundscapes on a personal level. It was as if I finally found the key to something.

Even as I was still working on INFERNO, I was thinking, how the hell am I ever going to top this next time? I was doomed.

I started WALL OF SOUND with a daunting blank slate and somehow, ideas came out. Refined ideas, complex ideas, small and large scale ideas and plenty of them.

It was as if the exhaustive process of putting INFERNO together strengthened a new creative muscle that I had never zoned in on before, so the first steps of writing WALL OF SOUND felt like a runner who runs a marathon after over-training for a long time. I was well warmed up.

The guitar playing on the album also came quite easy, despite it being without question the most evolved guitar playing of my career. It's a challenge to evolve on one's instrument album after album, especially on your 13th solo album. Luckily this is a challenge that I love. You will find this hard to believe when you hear the density and sheer amount of guitar coming at you from all directions, but in fact, all of the final guitar tracks on WALL OF SOUND were done in 9 days.

This furious and productive pace was made possible by over a year of making demo after demo and spending more time listening and living with the music rather than playing it. I had lived with the songs and edited them so incredibly many times, that by the time I got to the actual recording studio, it was like I had been playing the whole album on tour for a year already. I learned to do this from making INFERNO. This is why a lot of artists` debut albums are so strong - because they have had so much time to reflect on and fix the music, and also, more importantly, attach real life experiences to the songs. I feel like I have a debut album here.

    Guests:

Jinxx from Black Veil Brides and I wanted to do something that would shock his fans and my fans. I arranged a monster of a tune called Sorrow & Madness based on a melody that Jinxx wrote on the violin. I took his sweet melody and added so many twists and turns that it became a mammoth of Martyisms in tandem with a large side of Jinxx that has yet to be heard by his fans. We are both very proud of what happened.

I think Deafheaven is the one heavy band that comes to mind when people ask me to recommend something that`s not Japanese!, I was super excited to work with Shiv from Deafheaven. We wrote Pussy Ghost together and it is one of the most aggressive songs I have ever played, while at the same time evoking grotesquely beautiful moods that I have never felt before. One thing I learned from making INFERNO is that when you have a guest, let them come up with music first. Let it be their baby, so they are personally invested in the song. Then arrange it and do it my way, then add more things together. This gives you a final song that really sounds like both of the people put their heart and souls into the music, as opposed to one guy doing everything and the guest just blasting out a solo somewhere.

Jorgen from Shining also guested on INFERNO and when we finished that song we immediately started talking about what we would do next. For those who don`t know Shining, they are like a steroided out and genius level musicianed out version of Nine Inch Nails for the 21st century, with a charismatic singer/composer (Jorgen) and a wicked sense of melody, that hits me in the gut on every song. (Just Gimme) Something To Fight is the one vocal track on the record and it kills. Even after finishing this song we have started working on more new things for who know what

Having super engineer Paul Fig (Ghost, Alice in Chains, Rush), mixer Jens Bogren (Opeth, Lamb of God) and even the producer responsible for many of Queen's biggest hits and my idol Brian May's guitar sounds, Mack do the mixing on 2 of the songs on the album, is an honor for me for sure.

RIAA-certified, Billboard chart-topping, Richmond, VA band LAMB OF GOD may be one of the biggest bands in modern metal, but they will never forget where they came from. Mark Morton (guitar), John Campbell (bass), and Chris Adler (drums) formed the first incarnation of the band, BURN THE PRIEST, in the winter of 1994 after meeting four years earlier as students at Virginia Commonwealth University. Less than a year later, in the summer of 1995, they met vocalist Randy Blythe before adding Chris Adler's brother, Willie Adler (guitar), prior to transitioning to LAMB OF GOD - and the rest is global metal history.

Guitarist Mark Morton says, "To truly understand the essence of the band BURN THE PRIEST, one must first consider the landscape in which it began: the mid-90s. Grunge and alternative music ruled the airwaves. Social media and the internet had yet to assume their role as our collective sources for entertainment and cultural exchange. It was a time when DIY 'zines turned us onto new bands and regional scenes, and 'copy and paste' still implied a print shop and a glue stick."

BURN THE PRIEST's self-titled debut album, released via Philadelphia-based Legion Records, documented what was, in essence, a primal punk band performing metal. Ultimately, as they grew in local popularity, the five-piece chose to stray away from their name to avoid being associated with satanic metal, choosing the name LAMB OF GOD.

Morton continues, "As our sound and songs developed, so did our goals we began playing basement parties and warehouse shows and in doing so, we realized that the energy we were creating was transferable. The shows we played in those squats and warehouses [in Philadelphia] and the people we met there are forever embedded in our collective consciousness and the DNA of our band."

As they enter their 20th year since releasing their first self-titled album as BURN THE PRIEST, the band will release a full-length covers album that reflects on the greatness of classic punk, hardcore, crossover and noise - rock subgenres that contributed to what LAMB OF GOD - and indeed, the world - now view as modern heavy metal.

As BURN THE PRIEST, the band presents Legion: XX - featuring tracks originally performed by CRO-MAGS, AGNOSTIC FRONT, QUICKSAND, MINISTRY, BAD BRAINS, MELVINS, S.O.D., THE ACCUSED, BIG BLACK and Richmond punk band SLIANG LAOS. The tracks are performed with the unmistakable precision that has kept the band vital for two decades, but ultimately harks back to the raw, punk-driven sound first explored by four unsuspecting college students and a line cook-turned-vocalist in their formative years. Produced with Josh Wilbur at the helm, Legion: XX exhibits BURN THE PRIEST in their true element.

"Our inauspicious beginnings somehow grew into something none of us had ever even imagined possible, let alone aspired to, however, this is the story of BURN THE PRIEST," adds Morton. "The songs we chose to cover on this album reflect that story. They are touchstones from that point in time. The inspiration we gleaned from these bands and these songs carries through our work and our creative pursuits, even to this day. Many thanks to these bands for lighting our fire and endless gratitude to our fans around the world for keeping it lit."

"I've been an ACCUSED fan since I was 14 when they were on the »Thrasher Skate Rock Volume 3« compilation with C.O.C. and all these amazing crossover bands," says frontman Randy Blythe. "Their singer Blaine Cook was a huge influence on me, vocally."

Drummer Chris Adler recalls, "'Inherit The Earth' hit me in the face soon after I managed to get my grubby mitts on the album sometime around '88. I got the ACCUSED record at a "Yellow Banana" record store on Route 1 south of DC while in route back from my "counselor" to my home in Woodbridge, Virginia. I got home and grabbed my board and I rocked it on my Discman. At about 2:12 into the tune the clouds parted above me and on a loudspeaker, God bellowed down to me, 'RECEIVE YOUR PURPOSE.' That was the moment I knew that if I tried hard enough, I could convey myself and how I felt - with music. It will never be "ours," and we know that about all the tunes we've covered, but hopefully one of them hit you in the face as I had been, and God will part the clouds for you, too."

Blythe adds, "I have a radio show on Gimmie Radio, and [the station] is all metal shows except for mine. I do the punk rock show because I want to show the direct correlation between my band, and the punk scene going back to THE MC5 and THE STOOGES. There is a direct link - look at old pictures of METALLICA, SLAYER and ANTHRAX, and they're wearing MISFITS, D.R.I., and C.O.C. t-shirts. They fused the technicality of metal with the intensity of punk rock. Before them, metal was like in slow motion. Speed metal bands were listening to DISCHARGE. I beat that drum all the time when I talk to kids."

Legion: XX is a sonic tribute to metal's dark, dirty secret - the punk inspiration of all future heavy music to come.

Internationally-renowned heavy rock band LAMB OF GOD will release a brand new EP, entitled The Duke via Epic Records. The EP is titled after the new track 'The Duke,' written in honor of the band's late friend and fan, Wayne Ford, who was named after The Duke John Wayne.

A little while ago I became friends with a fan named Wayne Ford - he was terminal - leukemia. I talked with him often, even video chatted him into the studio. He was very calm about his impending death, and we discussed it very openly. I learned a lot from him. This song is for him, dedicates vocalist Randy Blythe.

    Blood For Blood

Hellyeah's fourth studio album, Blood for Blood, will be released via Eleven Seven Music.

The album was helmed by producer Kevin Churko (Ozzy Osbourne, Five Finger Death Punch, In This Moment) at his the Hideout Recording Studio in Las Vegas, Nevada. On the cover artwork for Blood for Blood, Hellyeah vocalist Chad Gray collaborated with renowned tattoo artist Paul Booth, who has been tattooing for over twenty years, and in that time he has worked on many celebrities and rock bands, including Slayer, Slipknot, Sepultura, Soulfly and Lamb of God.

The last project that Chad and I worked on together was the Mudvayne blacklight design, says Paul. I had such a great time working on that art, when Chad called on me to design Hellyeah's 'Blood for Blood,' I jumped right into it as I knew it, too, would likely be a fun one. Chad always gives me the freedom to explore and interpret his ideas. It always makes for great collaboration. I look forward to seeing it all in print!

It's a defining record for Hellyeah and for anyone on the fence, the band founding drummer Vinnie Paul declared, describing the record as focused and with a clear direction.

    Animal Mother

Visionary metal cult known as TODAY IS THE DAY prepares to assault the masses with their tenth full-length album, Animal Mother.

As always, the dejected and vengeful hymns TODAY IS THE DAY delivers with their latest opus are among the most scathing passages of audio one will experience, as Animal Mother unloads just short of a solid hour of pure anguish. The band's lineup features the rhythm section of bassist Sean Conkling (Regression, Burn Your Halo, Sprawl) and drummer Jeff Lohrber (Enabler, ex-Harlots), fronted by cult leader, founding guitarist/vocalist Steve Austin. Through fifteen diversified attacks, Animal Mother's wrath recalls elements of several seminal TITD albums, merging the dementia of Temple Of The Morning Star with the blazing delivery of In The Eyes Of God, yet several acoustic and more melodic angles elevate the LP's material to entirely different dimensions. Pain and hate are blatantly abundant in Austin's seething and venomous lyrical tirades and emotional outcries. The Animal Mother recordingsessions took place at the notorious architect's own Austin Enterprises in the deeply wooded Maine wilderness this brutal past Winter, the material fully produced and mastered by Austin. The cover art for Animal Mother was created by Samantha Muljat.

For two and-a-half decades, TODAY IS THE DAY has woven Steve Austin's prophetic observations and noise-soaked chaos through a psychedelic, unique and unmatched battery of heavy styles. The outfit has spawned an incredible discography, forging their way to the forefront of Amphetamine Reptile, Relapse, Blackmarket Activities and many others. The band has toured with countless acts including Motörhead, Morbid Angel, Helmet, Neurosis, The Melvins, Napalm Death, Coalesce, Unsane and Eyehategod. Going against the grain comes naturally for DevilDriver. The globally-renowned California Groove Machine have been a constant and effective force in the heavy metal world for the best part of two decades now. Thanks to widely lauded albums like 2005's epoch-shredding The Fury Of Our Maker's Hand, 2011's ante-raising, ultra-brutal Beast and 2016's acclaimed career peak Trust No One, the band led by vocalist Dez Fafara (ex-Coal Chamber) are firmly established as one of the most consistent and best-loved bands in modern metal. But in 2018, expectations are about to be torched in the mother of all campfires!

A monstrous collection of savage and slamming metal interpretations of Dez and his comrades' favorite outlaw country songs, Outlaws 'Til The End is both a startling curveball and a ferocious statement of individuality from a band with cojones to spare. "The blues and outlaw country are what made rock'n'roll. They were around before rock'n'roll...and in my head, I've always heard these songs heavy", explains Dez.

From the opening seconds of DevilDriver's face-flaying version of Hank III's 'Country Heroes' (featuring the man himself on guest vocals) onwards, Outlaws 'Til The End is simply one of the most vicious records the band have made yet. More importantly, these evocative, irresistible songs have all been wholly rebuilt from the ground up, powered by the classic DevilDriver sound and embellished with Dez's unmistakable feral roar.

Completing this unprecedented project is a host of metal and country luminaries providing unforgettable cameos: Wednesday 13, Brock Lindow (36 Crazyfists) Burton C. Bell (Fear Factory), Lee Ving (Fear), Randy Blythe and Mark Morton (Lamb Of God) and none other than John Cash Jr, son of Johnny Cash. The perfect marriage of badass country grit and neck-wrecking groove metal supremacy, it's a pistol-packing game-changer delivered by true heavy metal outlaws.

Deafheaven was formed in 2010 by vocalist George Clarke and guitarist Kerry McCoy. They released their debut studio album Roads To Judah in 2011 . They added
drummer Daniel Tracy to the group and released their breakthrough album Sunbather in 2013. After rounding out their line up with guitarist Shiv Mehra and bassist
Stephen Clark-each subsequent live set felt like a religious experience for the bigger (and bigger) shows that followed. Their third album, and first for ANTI-, 2015's
New Bermuda, was heavier, sturdier, and more grounded in the dirt than Sunbather. They toured extensively to support New Bermuda playing tours and festivals with
Lamb Of God, Anthrax, Danzig, and Gojira.

Deafheaven's new album, Ordinary Corrupt Human Love, finds them working with old friends again. The Jack Shirley-produced and Nick Steinhardt-art directed (of
TouchÉ AmorÉ) collection gets its title from Graham Greene's novel The End of the Affair, referencing a moment when someone is looking for love, in all of its imper¬-
fection and simple beauty. This sentiment is carried throughout the hazy, yearning romanticism of the record with song titles and words as sumptuous as the sounds
around them. Clarke describes the composition of Ordinary Corrupt Human Love beginning with "small seeds of healing, repair, and rebirth," and like each subsequent
Deafheaven album, this record is, in fact, a revelation.

Defeat has inspired some of our best art. If you survive something terrible, you surface on the other side, walk toward the light, and come back to life. If you're an
artist, this kind of new self-knowledge can lead to creating something universal and remembered, something that can live longer than you do. While Deafheaven have
managed to cross over this road in the past, they've nailed the feeling wholly with Ordinary Corrupt Human Love, a feeling that comes with experience and wisdom. Yes,
everybody deals with hurt, everybody's been the cause of their own implosions, and everybody has the capacity to overcome and love again. Deafheaven have found a
way to externalize all of this, and in making their most complete record to date, they turn it into a balm and a cathartic exorcism.

    The Concrete Confessional

An institution can be relied on forever. Its foundations don't shake due to the winds of change or tides of trends-no matter how volatile, omnipresent, or tenuous.

With steadfast determination, drive, and dedication, Hatebreed cement themselves as one of heavy music's strongest institutions on their seventh full-length offering and very first for Nuclear Blast worldwide, 2016's The Concrete Confessional. Since 1994, the Connecticut quintet-Jamey Jasta [vocals], Chris Beattie [bass], Wayne Lozinak [guitar], Frank Novinec [guitar], and Matthew Byrne [drums]-has risen to the ranks of hardcore and heavy metal elite with a GRAMMY® Award nomination, main stage slots on festivals, and countless fans worldwide. 2013's The Divinity Of Purpose earned their highest entry on the Billboard Top 200, bowing at #17 with impressive first-week sales in excess of 17,000. When it came time to return to the studio after two years on the road, Jasta and his cohorts clung to the bedrock on which their legacy stands firm.

"There's nothing better than loud amps, riffs that hit you right in the chest, and lyrics that spark a new thought and give you a charge," he declares. "That's our musical DNA. We could just be who we are. We don't need to incorporate whatever the trend is. We can just be Hatebreed. There are some new highlights to the game, but you know it's us."

The Divinity Of Purpose saw them become a headliner in locations such as Slovenia, Slovakia, Russia, Japan, and beyond. They would perform at Poland's Woodstock in front of 400,000 people. Stateside, the band supported longtime friends Slipknot on an extensive 2015 run in between festival appearances at Rock On The Range, Welcome To Rockville, and more as well as Motörhead's Motörboat with Slayer and Motörhead.

"Riding into this album, I realized we could play with bands of every genre nearly anywhere without deviating from who we are," continues Jasta. "The Motörboat was really a highlight of our career. We played this exclusive event with some of our chief influences. We got to literally chart new territory."

Returning home in the Fall of 2015, they entered the studio with longtime producer Zeuss [Rob Zombie, Soulfly]. Immediately, they channeled the spirit that's long defined their signature sound. By January, the record was mixed by Josh Wilbur [Megadeth, Lamb Of God] and primed for ignition.

"We had a really good vibe in the studio," he says. "The record is a snapshot of this time for us."

It also reflects what's going on outside. The opening track and first single "A.D." fuses together torrential thrashed-out guitars, double bass drums, and Jasta's immortal growl before an incendiary lead. The singer dissects what the American Dream means in a climate of upheaval. "Fight fire with fire, you'll see everyone's burning," he screams. Think of it as "Vote With A Bullet" or "Holy Wars The Punishment Due" for the Instagram age.

"It's a mirror of both sides of the story whether it's what you believe in the media or what you actually see," he explains. "Musically, it came together quickly. It's about all of the frustrated feelings that come out when I turn on the news. So much of our attention is focused on the wrong areas. People want to one-up each other with better clothes and cars, and it's all bullshit. Nobody goes to the grave with any of that stuff. It's not all instant gratification. What exists on the phone and computer isn't what exists in real life. What is the American Dream anymore?"

The machine gun chug of "Looking Down The Barrel Of Today" proves equally uplifting and undeniable. "I wanted something to get crowds pumped up," he admits. "So many fans will tell us, 'Your records help me get through my life.' I needed to encourage this cyclical power to get up and face the day. You either make the best of today, or you're done in by it."

"Something's Off" carries an ominously lyrical bass line into a guttural chant, showcasing Jasta's chilling vocal dynamics in the process. "I've written songs about depression, alcoholism, and falling back into destructive patterns," he says. "However, I never felt like I could really put my finger on what anxiety is. It's not just social anxiety but this unexplained feeling of unease. I've felt it since I was in kindergarten. You can't control when it happens. Heavy music has kept that beast at bay-in addition to exercise and experiences with my family. I had to confront it directly in the lyrics here."

Elsewhere, "Remember When" and "Slaughtered In Their Dreams" juxtapose visceral lyricism with a searing sonic backdrop as chaotic as it is catchy. Through and through, The Concrete Confessional is classic Hatebreed.

In order to transfer this message to the masses, the band inked a global deal with Nuclear Blast. "They're world-renowned mainstays in the metal community," he smiles. "We get to be in the company of career bands we look up to." These musicians have come a long way from the East Coast's storied nineties underground scene. Their journey has seen them achieve a 2005 GRAMMY® Award nod in the category of "Best Metal Performance" for "Live For This," sell over 1.2 million records, and land a #1 debut on Billboard's DVD Chart with 2009's Live Dominance. Moreover, they've annihilated audiences from OZZfest Japan and Download Festival to Wacken, Hellfest, and beyond.

Now, The Concrete Confessional fits right into the bold, bloody, and beating heart of the Hatebreed institution.

"The title had to be something that was heavy and hard, but also vulnerable and honest," Jasta leaves off. "Heavy music is this cleansing, therapeutic, and cathartic experience. You're on that concrete floor, the guitars are crushing you, and someone's screaming their head off-sharing their pain and aspects of their life through words, poetry, or songs. There's nothing like it. You confess you have negative thoughts, and you purge them. For however long you're at the show, there are no bills to pay, issues to deal with, or problems holding you back. You can be free."

Led by visionary frontman Steve Austin, Today Is The Day reigns as one of the most unique and influential underground metal bands of the past two decades. The band's violent and anthemic style, which blends metal, noise, psychedelia, and rock, has won worldwide acclaim ever since the debut album, Supernova, first hit in the early 90s. Nine studio albums have been released on such labels as Amphetamine Reptile and Relapse -- including modern-day classics like Willpower, Temple of the Morning Star, and In the Eyes of God -- and the band's changing lineup has included such musicians as Brann Dailor and Bill Kelliher, who would later go on to form Mastodon. Today Is The Day has toured the world with Motorhead, Helmet, The Melvins, Morbid Angel, Converge, Napalm Death, Neurosis, Eyehategod, Unsane, Coalesce, and many more. Steve Austin has also made a name as a producer, helping create seminal albums for Lamb Of God, Converge, Deadguy, and more.
