    Kenya (Pure Pleasure)

This outstanding album, recorded in 1957, in honor of the then recently formed republic of Kenya, highlights the wonderful Afro-American and Afro-Cuban musical language Machito spoke so well.

In this album, Machito has combined all the elements needed in bringing the true meaning of Afro-Cuban jazz music to the listener. Machito, his musical director Mario Bauza, Rene Hernandez and A. K. Salim who along with Mr Bauza composed and arranged this music, define it this way: Afro-Cuban rhythm differs from other rhythms in that instead of the usual drums carrying the rhythmic beat, it is carried by Cuban percussion instruments such as the bongos, congas, timbales, guiros and maracas. Also, and even more elemental, is that although there are four beats to the bar as in all jazz, in Afro-Cuban jazz the beat is not played by any instrunments as such. It is felt, rather than actually heard. Afro-Cuban jazz is, in it's performance, the marriage of Afro-Cuban rhythm and soloists.

    Musicians:

    • Machito (vocal, conductor)

    • Mario Bauza, Doc Cheatham, Joe Newman (trumpet)

    • Cannonball Adderley (as)

    • Ray Santos (ts)

    • Santo Russo, Eddie Bert (trombone)

    • Rene Hernandez (piano)

    • Roberto Rodriguez (bass)

    • Jose Mangual, Uba Nieto, Candido Camero (percussion)

Recording: December 1957 at Metropolitan Studios, New York City

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Cal Tjader's Latin Concert

As Cal Tjader's reputation and popularity grew as one of the major forces in Afro-Cuban jazz, he was able to hire some of the music's most able artists. On this 1958 album, recorded at San Francisco's famous Black Hawk, his band included percussionists Mongo Santamaria and Willie Bobo, pianist Vince Guaraldi, and bassist Al McKibbon, a veteran of the Dizzy Gillespie band that opened American ears to the charms and urgencies of Afro-Cuban rhythms. Having Al in the band, Tjader once said, is an impossible dream come true. Among the pieces here are several by Tjader and one that was destined to become a classic in the literature of Latin jazz, Ray Bryant's Cubano Chant.

    Elegant Gypsy

Al DiMeola's second album Elegant Gypsy proved to become one of the defining albums in fusion. While being still a member of Return To Forever, DiMeola delivered his sophomore solo record after Land Of The Midnight Sun by collaborating with jazz rock giants Steve Gadd, Jan Hammer and Anthony Jackson. He even enlists Flamenco superstar Paco De Lucia on "Mediterranean Sundance", a song which predicts the style DiMeola would eventually evolve into: Latin tinged acoustic wizardry. Studio Rio Presents: The Brazil Connection

Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release Studio Rio Presents: The Brazil Connection, an innovative new collection of 12 beloved vocal recordings re-experienced through new samba and bossa nova arrangements created by iconic Brazilian musicians and The Berman Brothers.

Embracing the All In One Rhythm™ Theme of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Studio Rio Presents: The Brazil Connection blends 12 iconic performances--from Bill Withers, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Billie Holiday, Sly & The Family Stone, The Isley Brothers, Mel TormÉ, Nina Simone, Johnny Nash, Dave Brubeck with Carmen McRae, Andy Williams and Sarah Vaughan--with new, samba and bossa nova arrangements and production inspired by the spirit of Brazilian music.

Working on Studio Rio Presents: The Brazil Connection project, the Berman Brothers sought out the original multi-track masters and utilized an all-new, state-of-the-art separation technology from Science of Sounds to extract exquisitely pristine and detailed vocals. The newly isolated vocals were then melded with brand-new, authentic backing arrangements played by Studio Rio, an all-star cast of Brazilian musical pioneers from the bossa nova and samba genres, including Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner Roberto Menescal and Brazilian musical legend Marcos Valle.

Studio Rio Presents: The Brazil Connection is the latest innovative musical project from the Berman Brothers (Frank and Christian), a production team whose previous work includes Rhythms Del Mundo (2006), a cross-cultural album summit which which fused an all-star cast of Cuban musicians including Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Portuondo of the Buena Vista Social Club with US and UK artists and superstars such as U2, Coldplay, Sting, Jack Johnson, Maroon5, Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs and others. Rhythms del Mundo was released in more than 61 countries and received multiple sales awards worldwide.

During the past 20 years, the Berman Brothers have received more than 90 gold and platinum awards, two BMI Awards, a Golden Globe nomination, a Grammy nomination (for Love One Another, recorded by Cher) and a place in history for their production and remix of the Baha Men's colossal hit, Who Let the Dogs Out. As producers, writers and publishers, the Bermans have worked with an array of international superstars including Coldplay, Sting, Cher, Real McCoy, Dido, Maroon5, Sophie B Hawkins, Reamonn and members of the legendary Buena Vista Social Club.

Music is the heart and soul of Brazil, celebrating with syncopated beats and beautifully expressive melodies. It's the life force of the entire culture, wrote the Berman Brothers in their notes for Studio Rio Presents: The Brazil Connection. We have always had a huge appreciation of Brazilian music. Between us, we have a massive collection of bossa nova and samba recordings, new and old, a lot which we found in flea markets in Amsterdam, Paris, and London.... Once you get into this music, there really is no way to stop. It was this joyful and timeless music that inspired the idea for this collection. Our goal was to bring the Brazilian joie de vivre to iconic performances by well-known American artists like Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, The Isley Brothers, and many others. What would these classic songs sound like had they been recorded in the studios of Rio De Janeiro in the first place, with the best Brazilian musicians and arrangers?"

"It was an amazing journey-bringing together these American classics and the vibrancy of Brazilian music with the help of so many talented musicians, arrangers and a dedicated production team. We learned many things putting together this music including what was the most important, and least surprising lesson of all: Brazil is the most musical place we have ever been in our lives.

    Let 'Em Roll

During the Blue Note 75th anniversary celebration the label released 100 essential Blue Note LPs and asked New York Times readers what titles they'd like to see make the list. This album is one of five new reissues that were hand-selected by Blue Note President, Don Was, based on New York Times reader recommendations.

In an unusual setting for a groove/soul jazz setting, B3 organist extraordinaire big John Patton creates a band around himself that includes Grant Green, drummer Otis Finch, and vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson. It's truly weird to think of vibes on a groove date, but the way Patton's understated playing works, and the way Green is literally all things to all players, Hutcherson's role is not only a clearly defined one, but adds immeasurably to both depth and texture on this date.

What also makes this possible is the symbiotic relationship between Patton and Green. There is a double groove conscious swing happening on every track here, from the bluesed-out slip and slide of the title track which opens the record to a killer version of Hank Mobley's The Turnaround, which expands the blues vibe into solid soul territory because of Hutcherson's ability to play pianistically and slip into the funk groove whenever necessary. Green's deadly in his solo on the track, shimmering arpeggios through Patton's big fat chords and chunky hammering runs.

Also notable are Patton's own tunes, the most beautiful of which is Latona, a floating Latin number with a killer salsa rhythm in 6/8. As Patton vamps through the chorus, Green slips in one of his gnarliest solos ever. It begins with a groove like run in the hard bop blues and then shoves itself into overdrive, capturing the cold sweat of a Bola Sete or Wes Montgomery in his groove years. But when Green goes for the harmonic edges, all bets are off: Hutcherson lays out, and he and Patton go running to the bridge and bring the melody back just in time to take it out.

This is one of the least appreciated of Patton's records, and there's no reason for it; it is great.

Over the course of his impressive artistic career, Tito Puente was a perennial and prolific innovator of Latin tropical music and Latin jazz of the highest caliber. Now thanks to Sony Music Latin, we all get to enjoy the four signature and landmark albums (artwork - front & back- as it originally appeared), along with a fifth bonus album, that truly defined the "American Icon" and his golden era:

"Cuban Carnival" (1956) is included with the original artwork. "Dance Mania" (1958) is the best-selling album of Tito's career. Stone Soul (Speakers Corner)

With all the exultation about the reconciliation between the capitalistic USA and the socialistic island state of Cuba, it is easy to oversee that the musical fusion between the two countries took place decades ago. Afro Cuban jazz, in which the interpretation and rhythms of swing and bebop are united with all imaginable rhythms from Brazil and the Caribbean, was label enough to describe a peaceful yet exciting and revolutionary music.

At first glance it appears that in his album Stone Soul the Cuban percussionist Mongo Santamaria just took a handful of popular songs from pop and soul and 'translated' them into his own musical language. So far so good: but the enthusiasm and joy with which the band performs is anything but ordinary. Once the threshold for a potent Latin combo has been overcome with meaty winds (See Saw), Sonny Fortune on the alto sax storms ahead along rhythm & blues tracks and breaks out with hectic cleft licks on his own headstrong path. Incited by crisp percussion, one can experience how traditional music is combined with a musician's own ideas to create completely new music.

    Musicians:

    • Mongo Santamaria (conga,bongo)
    • Sonny Fortune (alto saxophone)
    • Hadley Caliman, Hubert Laws (tenor saxophone)
    • Art Kaplan (bassoon)
    • Louis Gasca (trumpet)
    • Rodgers Grant (piano)
    • William Allen (bass)
    • Steve Berrios (timpani)
    • Bernard Purdie (drums)

    Deodato 2 (Speakers Corner)

In his early years, Deodato, 'the gift of God', cultivated a highly original art of give and take in his music. His score for Stanley Kubrick's science fiction film A Space Odyssey 2001 - a funky, jazzed-up adaptation of Richard Strauss's bombastic orchestral work Also sprach Zarathustra - opened the ears of innumerable cinema-goers to classical music. On the present album Deodato again rocks and grooves with works from past eras: Gershwin's Rhapsody In Blue is reworked rhythmically and enriched, while Ravel's Pavane unfolds hesitatingly over a velvety carpet of sound. And why not win new fans for major musical works? Deodato, the master, and his complex musical apparatus impart a true Latin feeling to these covered works.

The 'new' classic Nights In White Satin too, one of the most congenial gigantic hits from the 60s, is staged by Deodato as a miniature slow rock drama just as perfectly as he cultivates his own very pure funky style (Super Strut). In Deodato's arrangements, the powerful instrumental forces open out almost effortlessly and evolve into a gentle flow of sheer pleasure. Everything appears to be simple, although nothing is simple! And therein lies the uniqueness of 'the gift of God'.

    • Joe Temperley (bassoon)

    • Hubert Laws (flute)

    • John Tropea (guitar)

    • Stanley Clarke (bass)

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Drum Suite

    Strictly Limited To 2,500

    All-Analog Mastering By Kevin Gray

    Pressed At RTI

"Recorded in 1956, Art Blakey's Drum Suite is a wonderful hybrid of African, Latin, and hard bop rhythms that prefigures the concept of Afro-beat by at least a decade, and the sheer energy, not to mention its very special and fresh-sounding intimacy, make it especially astounding. Even more amazing is that the three parts of the suite -- Blakey's The Sacrifice, Ray Bryant's Cubano Chant, and Oscar Pettiford's Oscalypso -- were recorded straight through live, and were only intended to be a pre-take run-through, but as is obvious here, Blakey and company nailed the whole thing right out of the box. The original LP was issued by Columbia with the drum suite on one side, and three tracks recorded by a 1956 version of the Jazz Messengers (Bill Hardman, Jackie McLean, Sam Dockery, and Spanky DeBrest) for Blakey's first Columbia album, Hard Bop, on the other side. Groundbreaking for its time, and still sounding vital, powerful, and visionary, the Drum Suite album is somewhat of a lost masterpiece that deserves a fresh audience.

Latin In A Satin Mood (45 RPM)

Mastered By Kevin Gray At Cohearent Audio From The Original Analog Tapes

200-Gram Gatefold LP, Cut At 45 RPM

Plated And Pressed At Quality Record Pressings!

She was the sultry film starlet-turned-torch singer-come-TV actress whose dusky alto captivated a generation. Julie London was discovered while running a department store elevator in Hollywood.

Just three years earlier the bountiful 15-year-old, born Julie Peck to her parents, a song-and-dance duo of the vaudeville era, was singing on her parents' radio show. When she started working in the movies in the 1940s, she changed her name to London. During the course of a celebrated career in acting and music, she made more than 30 albums.

The sultry-voiced actress, who was once married to Dragnet producer-star Jack Webb, had a hit record with the 1950s single Cry Me a River. The single debuted in 1955, sold three million copies and remained in demand into the 1960s.

Analogue Productions has brought back Julie London sings Latin In A Satin Mood in dramatic, deserving fashion. Remastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, and plated and pressed on 200-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, the crispness and vibrancy of this recording is spectacular. And we've cut this version at 45 RPM, meaning the 12 tracks are spread over two LPs for even better cartridge tracking for superior sound quality!

Exotic and Latin albums were big deals in the 1950s and early '60s, and singers as diverse as Dean Martin, Lena Horne, and Peggy Lee were recording with castanets and bongo drums. Like Peggy Lee, London combines a restrained vocal approach with jazz phrasing and a cool attitude with icy sex appeal on this album of relaxing Latin standards. Julie does look beautiful on the cover, and the backup male mariachi-esque serenade ads to the romantic ambiance.

Speaking of the cover, expect only top-notch reproduction for our Analogue Productions reissue. Originally a single LP jacket, we've upgraded to a gatefold incorporating more original photographs provided by Universal.

London appeared in nearly two dozen motion pictures during the 1940s and '50s; she was best known to TV audiences as nurse Dixie McCall on the 1970s hospital drama Emergency! She was hired on Emergency! by Webb, her then-former spouse, to co-star with her second husband, jazz musician Bobby Troup. Troup, who composed the iconic musical hit Route 66 played a doctor on the show and it was he who helped sign Julie to the Liberty record label.

Describing her smoky vocal style, London once said, It's only a thimbleful of a voice, and I have to use it close to a microphone. But it is a kind of over-smoked voice, and it automatically sounds intimate. A style inimitable, in our estimation.

This Newly Reissued Vinyl Addition Is A 'Must Have' Title For For Both Getz And Tjader Fans.

In the vein of many a smooth West Coast jazz outing, this 1958 disc finds original cool stylist Getz paired with vibraphonist Cal Tjader on a very enjoyable
selection of jazz standards and Tjader originals. The lineup includes pianist Vince Guaraldi, guitarist Eddie Duran, bassist Scott La Faro, and drummer
Billy Higgins (this was one of the earliest record dates for either La Faro or Higgins, both of whom were playing with Getz at San Francisco's Black Hawk
in between recording sessions). Guaraldi's spry Ginza Samba kicks thing off with nimble and imaginative statements by all the soloists. Tjader's
swinging originals Crow's Nest and Big Bear provide prime solo vehicles as well, while his lovely waltz number Liz-Anne adds some nice contrast to
the set, eliciting one of Getz's best solos in the process. The group rounds things out with fine ballad readings of I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face
    and For All We Know.

Stan Getz: one of the all-time great tenor saxophonists

Cal Tjader: The legendary percussionist who is often linked to the development of Latin rock and acid jazz. Although fusing jazz with Latin music is often
categorized as Latin jazz (or, earlier, Afro-Cuban jazz), Tjader's output swung freely between both styles.

    La Cuna (Speakers Corner)

Ray Barretto disliked his music being labelled 'Latin Jazz' - yet the album La Cuna is one of the most memorable of this genre, since it amalgamates the diverse moods of both Americas. In this album, the expertise of the legendary producer Creed Taylor is combined with an all-star ensemble and the supreme musicality of the skilful jazz percussionist Barretto to create a tightly-knit performance. The title-giving opening number sails along merrily with a salsa swing, but then the soaring flute melodies and the powerful piano improvisations cool down the Caribbean rhythms. How the players mingle driving patterns with delicate melodies to form beautiful song is demonstrated best in Doloroso and also in Mambotango, whereby the latter exudes controlled coolness in the somewhat electric mood.

John Tropea leans seemingly intentionally towards Santana and his art of guitar-playing, and this is further enhanced by the late Joe Farrell's phenomenal performance.
A further tribute is paid to one of the greatest musicians ever to combine various styles and trends with a speeded-up version of Stevie Wonder's Pastime Paradise.

To conclude: if not Latin Jazz, then definitely Latin AND Jazz.

    Musicians:

    • Ray Barretto (conga, percussion)

    • Joe Farrell (tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, flute)

    • John Tropea (guitar)

Includes The Hit This Is Not America By David Bowie/Pat Metheny Group

The Falcon and the Snowman is based on the true story of military contractor employee and his drug pusher childhood friend who became spies for the Soviet Union. Actors Timothy Hutton and Sean Penn star together with Christopher Walken, and director John Schlesinger.

The music is composed and performed by the Pat Metheny Group with occasional orchestrations for strings. The exceptions are a male chorus featuring a young alto which bookends the album and This Is Not America, a collaboration with David Bowie, credited as producer and co-composer, who as well performs lyrics for an arrangement of the theme heard in the track Chris.

Pat Metheny is also involved in duets, solo works and other side projects. His style incorporates elements of progressive and contemporary jazz, post-bop, Latin jazz and jazz fusion. Metheny has three gold albums and 20 Grammy Awards.

The single from the album This Is Not America, written and performed by David Bowie, reached the hit charts all over the world. The song appeared on several other compilation albums and as b-side on 7.

    Expectations

Expectations (1972) is an essential Free Jazz album by the pianist, saxophonist, and composer Keith Jarrett. The album shows that Keith Jarrett was an ambitious, multi-talented threat to be reckoned with.

Jarrett again turns his early eclecticism loose - from Gospel-tinged Soul-Jazz to atonal Avant-Garde -yet this time he does it with an exuberance and expansiveness that puts his previous solo work in the shade.

Common Mama, Take Me Back, and Nomads are the most invigorating tracks, containing Latin, Jazz and Electric Jazz-Rock influences.

In addition to Jarrett, musicians on the recording include Dewey Redman (tenor saxophone), Charlie Haden (bass), Paul Motian (drums), Sam Brown (guitar), and Airto Moreira (percussion). It was produced by George Avakian.

    Boss Guitar

Before he moved away from straight-ahead jazz and starting playing what is now known as smooth jazz, Wes Montgomery was one of bop's finest guitarists. Montgomery's bop period ended much too soon, but thankfully, he recorded his share of rewarding bop albums when he was still bop-oriented -- and one of them is Boss Guitar, which Orrin Keepnews produced in 1963. It's a trio recording, employing Mel Rhyne on organ and Jimmy Cobb on performances that have held up well over time; Montgomery shows how expressive a ballad player he could be on the standards For Heaven's Sake and Days of Wine and Roses, but the fast tempo exuberance of The Trick Bag (a Montgomery original) serves him equally well. Montgomery swings the blues with pleasing results on Fried Pies (another Montgomery original), while Consuelo Velázquez's Besame Mucho (which is usually played at a slow ballad tempo) is successfully transformed into medium-tempo Latin jazz. Boss Guitar is among the bop-oriented Montgomery albums that should continue to be savored after all these years.
